Chapter | Forty-five
"What?!" Becks asks, pulling herself away and staring into my eyes, searching for the truth of the words I've spoken.
Well, I must look genuine because her lips stretch in a beaming smile, covering her mouth with one hand while I take the other one and place a kiss on her knuckles.
"She's the one," I say, shrugging my shoulders.
"Who is the one?" Feli asks oblivious to our topic, closing in with two coffees in her hands, handing one to me. "You really need one," she winks.
Becks keeps staring at me, totally stunned by the news, unable to wipe off the smirk she has plastered on her face.
Feli still looks dumbfounded, shifting her eyes from me to Becks, raising her eyebrows, and becoming impatient.
"What is it with you two? Is la mia nipote awake?" she asks, eyes widening and a beaming smile completing the confusion mixed with curiosity plastered on her face. (My niece).
Becks keeps chuckling, rolling her wedding ring on her finger, sending my sister messages that haven't passed unnoticed.
"No!" she mumbles. "Mio Dio, Santa Maria, la Madre de Dio!" she whispers in excitement while I shyly rub the back of my neck. "Enzo, caro mio," she keeps bubbling, coming closer to me and throwing her arms around my neck. "Sono tanto felice per voi due," she declares, and now she's literally crying her eyes out. (My God, Santa Maria, Mother of God) (Enzo, my darling) (I am so happy for the two of you).
"Grazie, Feli," I reply and give her a warm hug, burying my nose in the crook of her neck, glaring at Becks as she stares at us, fat tears rolling down her cheeks, stumbling in her plump lips stretched in a smile. (Thank you).
"Did you ask her?" Feli wants to know.
"I have a harder task before that," I reply.
"Lucas?" she guesses, raising her eyebrows.
Massimo follows, bringing coffees as well, while I take a seat to distance myself from the emotions floating around, keeping myself silent.
From the joy of having almost all the family on my side... yeah, almost, I shift to feeling heartbroken for not knowing anything about Eve yet, but with my mind in peace, since Lucas seems to have finally understood that Eve and I are a reality he can't object to anymore, no matter what. It's a milestone, I'll give you that, but one that I'm adamant to cross.
"What about me?" Lucas shows up out of nowhere, closing in the getting his wife in his arms.
"Um... nothing... nothing, just thinking you might want a coffee," Feli quickly replies to Lucas, fishing the cup of coffee from the table and handing it to him, smiling a wide, nervous smile.
"Eveline Tate?" a doctor comes in followed by some nurses and we all jump on our feet, circling him, eyes glued to his face, jaws clenched, breaths stuck.
"Who is the father?" he asks.
"That would be," Lucas says.
"That's me," I speak at the same time with Lucas and our stares meet menacingly.
"I'm sorry, it's my fault. Who is the father of Miss Tate's child?" he clarifies it with a small smile and my heart swells with joy at being called the father of Eve's child, stepping one foot in front.
"Sono io, dottore," I reply. (That's me, doctor).
I feel sweat forming at my temples, my hands tremble and I pin my legs stronger onto the floor.
"Well, sir, the young lady is a fighter. We've stopped the bleeding and now she's stable, but still under plenty of medicines. She is awake but I must insist she takes plenty of rest in an hour or so. The baby is fine as well," he tells me, and his words sound like huge bells coming through a tunnel, hitting my eardrums.
I clench my fists tight, swallowing the enormous lump formed in my throat while Becks escapes a loud sob releasing a considerable amount of air, standing somewhere behind me and grabbing my upper arm in a grip.
My head falls in front with my chin pinned to my chest, squeezing my eyes strongly and sighing in relief.
"May I see her?" I ask in a deep tone.
"Of course. Follow me," he replies, and we all start walking behind him towards Eve's room.
We take left, and then we take the right. Cazzo! Why the fuck is he walking so slowly? (Fuck).
He stops in front of a door, showing me with a motion of his hand that I can enter.
I look to the door through the wide window and I see Eve laying on the hospital bed. She seems to be sleeping already and a nurse next to her bed fixes the last details of her being connected to some device.
My face hardens and I frown my eyes while I notice something weird with the view that I have in front of my eyes.
"That's just a device to keep the track of her heartbeats. Nothing serious. Just a procedure, sir," the doctor clarifies, most probably worried about my deadly stare, but before he finishes his words, I push the door open and walk some huge steps to Eve's bed.
"What the fuck are you doing?" I growl at the nurse who snaps her head back at me, alerted by my entrance and trying to hide something at her back with her left hand.
Her eyes widen to the stage of almost gauging out of her head when Lucas' fingers curl around her neck, mobilizing her and bringing out the syringe she has been hiding behind.
"What are you doing? Who are you?" the doctor asks her, totally unaware of who she is and completely baffled by the event.
His reaction confirms my suspicions. She's not a nurse and now I know something is definitely wrong.
Massimo comes in as well and grabs the arms of the so-called nurse, helping Lucas to take her out while the woman jerks and squirms her body to release herself.
"I'm really sorry, sir. I have no idea who she is. She's not working here," the doctor rushes to say, turning towards the door and showing me to follow him outside.
"We talk in here," I spit.
Something shitty is going on and I'll not leave the room till I have proper security at the doors.
I turn to Eve where Becks is already crouched over, brushing her knuckles on her daughter's white cheeks, sobbing words I can't understand.
"Alright," he finally says and walks to the two-seat sofa in the room, asking me to join him. "Sir, do you know any reason for which Miss Tate would induce herself a miscarriage?" the motherfucker has the audacity to ask.
I snap my hand in his neck with a hasty move, squeezing my fingers around it and stopping the air from getting in his lungs exactly when Feli grabs my hand.
"Enzo! Enzo, come down," she tells me, and I unclench my hand while the doctor coughs, sucking air into his lungs.
"Talk!" I order.
He coughs a few more times, obviously shattered by my grip, and rubs his hand on his neck.
"I believe that the almost miscarriage of Miss Tate has been induced," he confesses, stepping a few inches away from me, concerned about what I'm going to do after the news he has given me.
"What?" Feli asks. "What do you mean, induced? She would never..."
"Of course, she would never, Feli!" I shout at her.
Is she fucking insane? Eve would never do that to herself or our baby.
"We found a considerable amount of ethylene oxide in her system. It's a chemical used in dental clinics, but the lever we've found is unusual," he answers Feli's question. "She is stable, and we've managed to save both her and the baby, but I believe this should be taken to authorities because someone did it, and... considering what happened here earlier... sir..."
"You keep your fucking mouth shut, you hear me?" I growl at him, with venom and threat in my tone. "I need Lucas," I say, walking away towards Eve's bed, curling a hand around Becks' shoulders who is sitting next, holding her daughter's hand.
She is sobbing lightly, eyes glued to Eve's face, and she escapes a deep moan of pain when I engulf her to my chest, pulling my phone out and dialing Lucas' number.
"I have security on the way to you. Four guys. They know what to do. I'll be back as soon as I secure this piece of shit in the basement at Massimo's," he says in a breath before I even had the chance to say anything.
"Good. I'll wait for you here," I reply in a whisper and hung up, still holding Becks tight with my other arm.
"I'll skin him off," she mumbles.
Now, if you think Becks is always an angel, you have another thing coming. She can be the worst donna when it comes to the ones she loves. And Eve... let's just say that Becks would shoot both me and Lucas for her daughter without blinking twice and never regret it. (Lady).
"I'll take care of it, Becks," I tell her, peppering kisses on her head.
Feli comes closer to us, laying a hand on my shoulder.
"I need fresh clothes, Feli. And my gun," I tell her, still holding Becks and rocking her body lightly. "And take Becks home to rest."
"No!" Becks shouts, shifting her glare to me. "I'm not going home!"
"Becks, I'll be right here. I'm not going anywhere. Do you trust me?" I ask her while her eyes throw fire at me.
"But..." she tries to convince me.
"Please, Becks. I'm not moving from here. I'll have four men with me, and I'll bring Eve home to you as soon as they dismiss her from the hospital."
"Becca, come on, sweetheart. Let us deal with this," I hear Lucas saying, suddenly coming in and Becks unwraps herself from me just to sink into her husband's arms. "You'll come back in the evening, okay?" he says, brushing his palms on her face and caressing her hair while his eyes wrap her in the most caring glare.
She shifts her tearing eyes from Lucas to me and then back to her husband, still trying to make us change our minds, but Feli grabs her arm and walks with her towards the door.
"Lucas..." she says, turning around to us while he lifts his eyes at her in a glare filled with love, pain, and sorrow. "I love you," she whispers, making Lucas pull himself from the spot he's standing and run to his wife, grabbing her head in his hands and pressing a deep, painful kiss on her lips, crouching over her petite frame.
Becks moans in pain but holds herself strong, wrapping her arms around his torso.
"I love you, too," he whispers back, pressing his forehead on hers, hard and filled with anger. "I'm going to find the ones that have done this and skin them off. They're dead already. I promise, Becca," he speaks to her softly but firmly while she cups his face in one palm and stares deeply into his eyes.
"You do that!" she replies determined as Queen ordering her army and surely expecting results, Then turns around, leaving the room together with my sister while Lucas sighs and runs a hand through his hair.
I sit on the chair next to Eve, covering her hand with my own and isolating myself from everybody around.
It's such a relief to feel Eve's skin warm again and her face calm, sleeping, although she still looks pale.
I keep thinking about what the doctor has said and I wonder who the hell knew. There is only one person to have known about Eve being pregnant, and that is Jason.
Jason, the guy that everybody trusts, even I do... to some extent.
"Does anyone know where Jason is?" I ask Lucas who walks closer to me, standing and constantly running his hands through his hair, rubbing the back of his neck, looking perfectly like a lion in a cage.
"No, and I know what you mean. Nobody is known she's pregnant but the ladies and of course, Jason.
"And the bitch?" I ask.
"She's at Massimo's, in the basement. They are dealing with her."
"I want her alive," I speak, my eyes still glued to Eve's face. "I want to get the truth out of her myself."
"Sure, Enzo. Consider it done," he replies. "Listen, I'm going to get some coffee. Do you want one?" Lucas asks and I know he's beyond nervous.
He can't stay still. I know his palms are itching to kill someone, just as much as I want to. We have been hit in our most sensitive point, our Achille's heel, and our both minds knit only plans of finding the one responsible.
I nod. Just finished three coffees, but why the fuck not? I need to keep myself alert.
Connections in my brain link and uplink together. I know I've had an issue with the Valentinis, something I should have dealt with a long time ago, but they are wiped from the earth. Nothing was left of them after the raid. It can't be them. There is nobody left. They were all murdered, men, women, children... nobody was left.
Then I have the issue with the diamonds, but Alex and Mario have their hands on them. Could this have come from my partners on this diamond shipment?
I pull my phone out and dial Alex's number while walking away from Eve's bed.
"Enzo, how are you?" he says cheerfully.
"Are you with Mario?" I ask with no other introduction.
"Si. Perche?" he becomes serious at the harsh tone of my voice.
He knows me well.
"I'm going to send you a picture and I need you to tell me if you know who she is or to find whatever you can about her," I speak in a low voice, peeking at Eve every ten seconds.
"Alight. I guess it's top urgent," he replies.
"Let's say... I can easily burn down Palermo to find out," I clarify it for him, and he hums.
"Send me the picture, Enzo and I'll talk to you later," he replies, and I hang up, calling Massimo next, and asking him for a picture of the bitch he has in his basement.
"We need to find Jason," I tell Lucas, walking back to Eve and taking my seat again next to her bed, grabbing her hand.
"Do you think he has something to do with this?"
"I don't know, but it's at least strange how he has disappeared right now," I reply and no, I don't think so.
Lucas would never have such scums working for him.
Let me rephrase that. No scum would dare to work and play with Lucas.
A knock at the door makes both of us snap our heads and stare at the door. One of the security guys watching the door comes in with a bag. The clothes I've asked for.
"Lascialo!" I order and he leaves the room once he drops the bag on the two-seat sofa. (Leave it).
I feel Eve's hand moving in mine and I jump on my feet, hovering over her face, impossibly close, while she opens her green orbs.
She rolls her eyes through the room before meeting mine, while I caress her forehead, waiting for her to come around.
"Hey, amore..." I greet her warmly. (Love).
