Scene 4

Scene 4

Inside the Mazin's home. Nala is sweeping. Envy is stacking sleeping mats.

Envy: (throws her hair in a messy ponytail as she rushes towards the door) I'm off to tend the sheep Nala!

Nala: (stopping her) Layla was up with the chickens. She already took out the sheep early this morning. She said you could use your beauty rest.

Envy: (gritting her teeth) Oh, she did, did she?  (under her breath) She's such a stinker!

Nala: Don't worry she promised to mix the dough as soon as she gets back.

Envy: I'll go make sure she doesn't lose any more sheep (under her breath) or her dignity.

Nala: (confused) Huh??

As Envy exits quickly Papa enters.

Papa: Hello!

Envy: Goodbye!

Papa: (over his shoulder) What's the hurry?

Nala: Something about Layla losing a sheep, I dunno...

Papa: Again?

Nala: I don't think so... but Envy sure is interested in tending sheep all of a sudden.

Papa: I don't like the sound of that. She could care less about those sheep. There's a new Peshmerga Training camp nearby. I have a feeling our eldest daughter might have ulterior motives.

Nala: (hopeful) You mean you think there's a boy Envy likes?

Papa: I wish! More like Envy wants to act like a man! (growls) The Peshmerga is no place for a girl! From now on Envy stays at home, she learns to sew and cook and helps with our bakery business—no more of this Peshmerga nonsense! I'm finding her a proper match. She'll be married before the year is done!

Nala: (worried) But Fadhil, she has no desire to marry.

Papa: (yelling) And I have no desire for my daughter to disgrace this family!  She's to obey her father and that's that!

Nala: Before you head out, can you try and get the oven to obey you?  It's acting up again! (She holds up a burnt circle of naan.)

Papa growls at her and heads out the door.

Song: Talk to Me Fadhil (Track 05)

Nala sings:
You never used to growl, you spoke sweetly to me
You never were so foul. You couldn't wait to be near me
Was it the war that made you a hard man?
Talk to me Fadhil, I promise to understand
Fadhil you're the man of my dreams
When you're around, I still get weak in the knees
Don't you know how I love you so?
Talk to me Fadhil, I want you to know.
When we were younger you'd hold me by the hand,
You'd whisper in my ear, you were such a sweet man,
What is that has changed you so?
Talk to me Fadhil, I want to know.
Fadhil you're the man of my dreams
When you're around me I still get weak in the knees
Don't you know how I love you so?
Talk to me Fadhil, I want you to know.
Don't you know I can't live without you?
I cannot lie, except next to you...
End of Song
