Act 1/Scene 1

Yazidi girls enter wearing traditional Kurdish dress. They are stunning in their costumes and parade the stage as if in a beauty pageant.

Song: "Don't Envy Me" (Track 1A)

Envy sings:
You think I'm something special? You wish you could be me?
Can you see inside my soul? Unlock my heart with a key?
Unlock my heart with a key?...
Don't envy me; don't envy me,
Beauty is the curse of my family tree.

Layla sings:
I'm more than just the shell, you undress me with your eyes.
This body is a vessel and you can't have what's inside,
No, you can't have what's inside.
Don't envy me; don't envy me,
Beauty is the curse of my family tree.

Nala sings:
As a people, we've been hunted, surrounded by our enemies,
We fled into the mountains, our sanctuary, our sanctuary...

Envy, Layla and Nala sing:
Don't envy me, don't envy me,
Beauty is the curse of our family tree.

All Yazidi women sing:
Don't' envy me; don't envy me,
Beauty is the curse of our family tree.

Selwah sings:
For centuries Yazidi's have been hated.
We've gone from 80 million to less than one.
Why can't we be left alone, in the land of the setting sun,
In the land of the setting sun?

All Yazidi women sing:
Don't envy me; don't envy me,
Beauty is the curse of our family tree.

Namoon sings:
The monsters come with the dust, wearing masks to hide their face,
Claiming they want to save us, but they only take us away,
They only take us away.

All Yazidi women sing:
What you see isn't what you get; I'm full of pain and regret...
Don't envy us; don't envy us,
Beauty is the curse of what's left of us...

The mood changes quickly to a bustling outside scene in Sinjar Village as men enter to join the women. They are milling about doing chores, socializing, girls are playing a traditional Yazidi game of "tag." They introduce the audience to the fun, superstitious side of the Yazidi people through, "Yazidi Life!"

Song: "Yazidi Life!" (Track 01)

Papa: Have you ever heard of Yazidi's? Let's teach you a thing or two...
First of all, we never... Wear the color blue!

(chorus):
The Yazidi life is a special life. We're not so different from you
Some say we're superstitious, but that's your point of view.

Nala: Yazidi's are a social bunch, we love to sing and dance!
But never serve us cabbage, or you won't stand a chance!
(All villagers repeat the chorus)

Villager #1: We drink lots of scalding tea served in tiny glass cups.
If the cups aren't full of sugar, it's not sweet enough!

Villager #2: If your teacup is half empty, you've stayed way too long,
And if you're not offered any, you'd better move along!
(All villagers repeat the chorus)

Villager #4: Our collars must be round, our religion dictates this,
But don't say we worship...(whispers) Satan!
(All villagers gasp and cover their ears then shout) We don't put up with this!

Villager #5: Yazidi's do love peacocks. Yes, we know they're blue,
And the "all seeing eye" Is always watching you!
(All villagers repeat the chorus 2x)

All villagers (shout): Yazidi Life!
End of song

Lights out.
