Chapter 3

3rd Person P.O.V

The weekend came pretty quickly, and Saturday evening saw Veronica entering the 7-Eleven to buy BQ corn nuts for Chandler before they went on to the party Ram Sweeney was hosting at his house. She quickly headed to where the corn nuts were located, and grabbed a couple of packs of the BQ flavour. Veronica was about to head over to pay, when she heard a familiar voice.

"Greetings and salutations. You want a slurpee with that?" Veronica looked over to see Calliope leaning against the counter nearby, holding a slurpee cup in her hand.

"No. But if you're nice, I'll let you buy me a Big Gulp." Veronica answered. Honestly, she had been genuinely curious about Calliope ever since their interaction in the cafeteria earlier in the week. Although part of her didn't want to get too close, thanks to the name on her wrist. She knew Chandler, Duke and Mac also had names on their right wrists, but none of them had been able to figure out what it meant.

"That's like going to Mickey D's and ordering a salad. The slurpee is the signature dish of the house. Now, did you say cherry or lime?" Calliope asked, hopping up to sit on the counter, and maybe she was flirting slightly, but it was amusing for her.

"I said Big Gulp. I'm Veronica, by the way. Veronica Sawyer. Are you ever going to tell me your name?" Veronica asked. Calliope laughed a little, deciding to take pity on the blue-clad girl and end the game she'd been playing. Besides, she was bound to find out about the whole soulmate thing sooner or later.

"Alright, Veronica Sawyer. I suppose I can end the suspense. Calliope Sanderson. My friends call me Callie. At least, they would if I had any friends. Just kidding, it's a nickname my sister and cousin sometimes call me." Calliope introduced herself. Veronica's eyes widened when she heard the name, as it was the exact same name as the one on her wrist. She was brought back to reality when she felt a hand on her shoulder.

"Are you alright? You kind of zoned out after you heard my name." Calliope said, a look of concern on her face.

"I'm fine. Just a little shocked, I guess, because of this. I've never really figured out what it meant." Veronica told her, pulling up the sleeve of her blazer to reveal the name on her wrist.

"Well, there's really no way to be subtle about it, but it's the mark of a soulmate bond." Calliope said, pulling up the sleeve of her leather jacket to reveal Veronica's name on her wrist, much to the shock of the brunette.

"You seem rather familiar with the concept." Veronica noted.

"Let's just say my family were really into magic and spells and that type of thing, and I don't mean that cheap parlour trick stuff that most magicians use." Calliope said.

"That's pretty cool. So, the two people you're always with, who are they?" Veronica asked.

"That would be my twin sister, Nessarose Sanderson, and my cousin, Jason Sanderson. They're back home, but they can wait a bit longer. So, care for a hit?" Calliope questioned, offering the cup to Veronica.

"Does your mother know you eat all that crap?" Veronica asked, although she immediately regretted it when she saw the look of pain flash in Calliope's eyes.

"My mother and my two aunts died last year. They were murdered shortly after Nessa, Jason and I turned seventeen. It's just been the three of us ever since." Calliope told her, telling a half-truth about the situation, since she was not about to reveal to someone she had just met that she was over three hundred years old, even if that said someone was her soulmate.

"I'm so sorry, I shouldn't have brought it up." Veronica said.

"It's alright, don't worry. You wouldn't have known if you hadn't asked." Calliope said. Then, it occurred to Veronica that she recognised the other two names.

"Wait, so if this whole name on the wrist situation is a soulmate thing, does that mean that your sister is Heather Chandler's soulmate, and your cousin is Heather McNamara's soulmate?" Veronica questioned.

"Yes, and yes." Calliope answered.

"Wow. That's going to be quite a shock for them, although I have a feeling Mac is going to be more accepting of the situation than Chandler is." Veronica remarked.

"Seems likely, except Nessa, Jason and I have never really been the type to directly tell people. We like to play games and leave people guessing. Something you might have noticed from our interaction in the cafeteria earlier this week." Calliope told her, getting down from the counter.

"Yeah, I definitely noticed that." Veronica said, before she went to pay for the corn nuts, although she did notice Calliope following her.

"So, where are you off to tonight?" Calliope asked.

"Homecoming party at Ram Sweeney's house." Veronica answered after she'd paid for the corn nuts.

"Ram Sweeney? That wouldn't happen to be one of the jocks I humiliated in the cafeteria the other day, would it?" Calliope questioned, tossing away her empty slushie cup.

"Yep. Kurt Kelly and Ram Sweeney. I would say you definitely bruised their egos that day, them getting their asses kicked by a girl. But I think they deserved it. They're always bullying other students, so about time they got a good dose of humility knocked into them." Veronica told her.

"Sounds fair. Also, I was being serious about buying you a slushie. So, cherry or lime?" Calliope questioned.

"Alright, cherry." Veronica answered. Calliope gave a smile before going to buy some more slushie cups, since Nessarose and Jason had wanted slushies as well. After paying for the cups, she went to fill them up, getting cherry for Veronica; strawberry for herself; watermelon for Nessarose; and kiwi for Jason. She handed Veronica her slushie, before placing the other three in a drinks carrier. The two then walked out together, and stopped by Calliope's motorbike, which was a two-seater and also had a storage box at the back for carrying bags, although this was now being used to transport the slushies, as Calliope placed the drinks into the box and closed and secured it.

"So, what will you be doing for the rest of the evening?" Veronica asked.

"Not an awful lot. Probably just sitting in my room and reading. Although, if you get tired of the party, you could always sneak out and drop by my place. It would be nice to get to know my soulmate a little better." Calliope said, handing Veronica a piece of paper with her address written on it, which the brunette slipped into her pocket.

"I'll definitely keep that in mind." Veronica said, trying and failing to fight the blush appearing on her face. She was quite glad that Calliope was her soulmate, even if they currently barely knew each other, as it was hard for her not to be attracted to the blonde. The loud honk of a car horn broke her out of her train of thought, and she turned to see the Heathers waiting for her.

"I'd better go." Veronica said, even though she really wanted to stay with Calliope longer.

"So I see. Have fun at the party tonight. My offer still stands, so just remember that." Calliope said. Had she moved closer without Veronica noticing? Although she did notice that Calliope wore red lipstick that was a few shades darker than the one Chandler wore. To Veronica, this added to Calliope's already stunning appearance, and also brought about the rising temptation to kiss her.

"I'll remember." Veronica told her, giving a smile.

"That's good. At least I won't have to...." Calliope was cut off from whatever she had been about to say by Veronica kissing her, the brunette having failed to continue to resist the temptation to do so. The blonde didn't object to this, instead kissing Veronica back, not even caring they were in a public parking lot and the Heathers were only a few metres away. Once they pulled away, Calliope gave a slight chuckle.

"Damn, talk about impulse action. And are you sure you have to attend this party? Because now I really want to spend some more time with you." Calliope said.

"Well, I suppose I could always leave the party early. The idea of being surrounded by drunk teenagers for hours does not sound appealing to me. So I'll spend a little bit of time there, just to say that I went, and then I'll sneak out and come and see you." Veronica suggested.

"Sounds like a good plan to me." Calliope said.

"In that case, I will see you later." Veronica said, before she headed back over to Chandler's Porsche and got in. Calliope watched the vehicle drive out of the parking lot, before she got onto her bike and quickly rode back to the house. She was honestly quite surprised at how easily Veronica had accepted the whole soulmate concept, and was even more surprised that she seemed willing to establish a relationship so quickly, although Calliope knew that rushing in too fast often didn't end well, but she knew that it was something she could discuss with Veronica at a later point. Not to mention, there was also the matter of her sister and cousin starting relationships with their respective soulmates.

A few hours later, Calliope was sat in her room, reading over some of her notes on a new potion she, Nessarose and Jason were working on. However, she frowned when she felt a breeze hit her, since she was sure she'd left her window shut. She glanced over and jumped in shock at the sight of Veronica climbing in through said window, so she quickly shoved the notes she was holding into a nearby drawer and closed it.

"Jeez, Veronica. When you said you'd come and see me, this was not what I expected." Calliope remarked.

"Sorry, but it seemed like a good idea when I first thought of it." Veronica said, and Calliope could easily tell that the brunette was somewhat hungover from drinking.

"Alright, you wait here. I'll be right back." Calliope said, going downstairs to retrieve a vial of hangover relief potion, as well as a vial of chamomile tea, before taking both back up to Veronica, who was sat on the bed.

"Here, drink this. It will taste awful, but it will help with your headache and stop you having a hangover tomorrow." Calliope said, handing over the first vial. Veronica downed the potion and immediately made a face.

"Ugh, that was horrible." Veronica said.

"This one will help get rid of the bad taste." Calliope said, handing over the second vial, which Veronica drank.

"What were those? They worked so quickly." Veronica asked.

"The first one was a herbal remedy to help with hangovers, and the second was some homemade chamomile tea." Calliope answered.

"I guess that goes well with your family's interest in magic and stuff. Anyone who didn't know better might think you guys also had an interest in witchcraft." Veronica said.

"Interestingly enough, my family actually dates back to the Salem Witch Trials. Unfortunately though, we haven't been able to discover much. Seems they were quite secretive and private about their lives." Calliope told her.

"That's really cool." Veronica said, giving a smile.

"Anyway, back to the matter at hand. Care to tell me what caused you to decide to climb in through my bedroom window?" Calliope asked.

"Oh, um, so I may or may not have humiliated Chandler at the party, and she's going to destroy my social reputation at school on Monday for it, so I figured I'd better make these next thirty hours worthwhile, so I came to see you. Admittedly, climbing in through the window was not my best idea, but it still worked." Veronica answered, blushing in embarrassment.

"I see. Well, the Chandler situation is something we can deal with in the morning. In the meantime, it looks like you're staying the night. So here, you can borrow these." Calliope said, handing Veronica a spare set of pyjamas, before turning around to give the brunette some privacy to change. Once she had, the two lay down on the bed.

"So, I know you explained the whole soulmate concept to me earlier today, but what does it mean for us? And I know I acted pretty impulsively outside the 7-Eleven, but it was very hard for me to resist." Veronica said.

"I suppose the traditional thing to do would be for me to ask you out, but I guess that would be a bit pointless considering I'm about to do this." Calliope answered, before kissing Veronica, who was more than happy to reciprocate.

"I guess it falls to me then, even though traditional can be kinda boring sometimes. Calliope Sanderson, will you be my girlfriend?" Veronica asked once she had pulled away.

"Veronica Sawyer, I would love to be your girlfriend." Calliope answered, earning a happy smile from Veronica. The two fell asleep not long after, with Calliope holding Veronica in her arms, and the thought of the inevitable confrontation with Chandler put to the back of their minds, as that was something they could deal with when the time came.
