Chapter 1
3rd Person P.O.V
In the town of Salem, on October 31st 1693, a shadowy cloaked figure could be seen flying through the sky, causing the animals outside to go into a state of panic. A boy sleeping in bed was woken up at a sudden noise. He looked at the bed next to his, only to see that it was empty.
"Emily?" The boy, Thackery Binx, questioned, but received no response. He got up and quickly left his house, hearing the faint sound of a woman singing, but he did not pay much attention to this as he continued to look for his sister. He then spotted his friend, and rushed over to him.
"Elijah! Elijah, have you seen my sister?" Thackery asked.
"Nay. But look, they conjure." Elijah answered, pointing toward the distant woods, where pink smoke could be seen rising above the trees from deep within the woods.
"Oh, god. The woods." Thackery said, before the two ran to the edge of the village. There, Thackery spotted Emily following a cloaked woman across the clearing and towards the woods.
"Emily!" Thackery called out, but Emily did not take any notice of him.
"She's done for." Elijah said.
"Not yet! Wake my father! Summon the elders! Go!" Thackery said, and Elijah rushed to comply, while Thackery raced across the field in order to try and catch up with his sister. He ran as fast as he could through the woods, though this resulted in him tripping and falling down a hill. When he looked up, he saw a cottage a distance in front of him, and saw the cloaked woman lead Emily inside. He approached the house and carefully peeked in through the window, seeing three old women crowded round his sister, who was sat calmly in a chair, as if she was in some sort of trance. He did have to duck down when the women turned to look in his direction, and quickly went to find a way to get into the cottage. He used the water wheel at the side to climb up and through an open window, which allowed him to watch from the rafters above. He knew his task was a dangerous one, as the whole town knew the story of Winifred, Mary and Sarah Sanderson, but he wasn't going to let that stop him from trying to save Emily. However, a new voice made him freeze in his tracks.
"Mother, I don't understand why this batch of the potion is necessary. You know my cousins and I are only a couple of weeks away from completing our task." A boy's voice spoke.
"Jason is right. We only need a week or two at most." A girl's voice spoke.
"Before we can finalise the crucial last details and then our spell will be complete." A second girl's voice spoke.
"And then you won't need to keep using the potion." Both girls spoke in unison. Thackery carefully peered out from his hiding place and saw three teenagers that seemed to be around the same age as him. He knew who they were also: Jason Sanderson, son of Winifred Sanderson; and Calliope and Nessarose Sanderson, fraternal twin daughters of Sarah Sanderson and Billy Butcherson. Jason had dark hair, but he had Winifred's green eyes. He was dressed in a dark green waistcoat over a long-sleeved white shirt, dark brown trousers with black boots, and a black belt with a gold buckle around his waist. Something Thackery found curious was the fact Jason wore an emerald pendant around his neck, a silver ring on his left middle finger, and an emerald ring on his right ring finger.
Calliope and Nessarose were Sarah's clones, as both had blonde hair and blue eyes like their mother. Both girls wore purple dresses, although Calliope seemed to favour a darker shade of purple to her twin. Both girls wore identical jewellery to their cousin, with the only difference being the gems in theirs were amethysts instead of emeralds. Thackery watched as Sarah walked over to her daughters.
"My dearests, we know how hard the three of you have worked. But this is just a precaution in case you find you need more time to complete your task." Sarah said.
"We understand, Mother." Calliope and Nessarose spoke in unison, hugging their mother. Meanwhile, Jason had been helping Mary to keep an eye on the potion.
"Mother, the potion is ready for the final ingredient." Jason said, earning a proud smile from Winifred. The Sanderson Sisters gathered around the cauldron, while the three teens stood back, allowing the final ingredient to be added before the potion was ready. When the sisters approached Emily with the potion, Thackery finally moved.
"No!" Thackery exclaimed, jumping down from the rafters, which gained the attention of the three sisters. He evaded Sarah and Mary by staying on the opposite side of the cauldron they were on, before pushing the cauldron and using it to knock them over, and then proceeding to spill the entire potion out. Thackery then made an attempt to go over to his sister, only to be electrocuted by Winifred. Mary sat up, and then glanced over at Emily, who had a glowing aura around her.
"Winnie. Look." Mary said.
"Ah, it is her life force. The potion worked." Winifred said, before she and her sisters walked over to Emily. Jason quickly shielded his cousins, as well as averting his own gaze, as the three of them could never bring themselves to watch innocent children being drained of their life force. They only looked over once more when they heard their family celebrating the restoration of their youth, so they went over to join them. Calliope glanced over and noticed Thackery slowly getting to his feet, though using the ladder for support. The cousins did make faces when they heard Winifred suggest making another batch of potion, but they couldn't really argue against it.
"You hag! There aren't enough children in the world to make you young and beautiful!" Thackery said.
"Uh oh. You shouldn't have said that." Nessarose said. However, she, Calliope and Jason decided to slowly back away as their family discussed what to do with Thackery as punishment for insulting them, with Winifred consulting her spell book.
"Ah, yes. Perfect. Jason, Calliope, Nessarose! Here, please." Winifred called, making the three freeze in their tracks, but they did not dare disobey.
"Yes, Aunt Winnie?" Calliope asked.
"You three shall be the ones to issue his punishment. He shall live forever with his guilt." Winifred said, passing the open spell book to Jason, who exchanged momentary looks of panic with his cousins before looking back at the spell. They didn't like cursing innocent people, but they also did not want to disappoint their family.
"Alright then." Nessarose said, taking the now closed spell book from Jason and carefully setting it on the table. The three cousins reluctantly stepped forward so they were stood next to Winifred, Mary and Sarah, but they did give Thackery apologetic looks for what they were about to do.
"Twist the bones and bend the back." Jason began the spell.
"Itcheta copeta maleka mystica." Calliope and Nessarose chanted the required background casting.
"Trim him of his baby fat." Jason continued.
"Itcheta copeta maleka mystica." Calliope and Nessarose repeated the background chant.
"Give him fur black as black. Just." Jason pointed a hand at Thackery.
"Like." Calliope copied Jason's action.
"This." Nessarose did the same. All three had to hide their winces as Thackery groaned in pain before he was transformed into a black cat by the spell. Moments later, a loud banging could be heard coming from the front door.
"Witches! Daughters of darkness! Open this door!" A man's voice shouted from outside. At this, the sisters looked panicked. Mary quickly threw a blanket over Emily's body to hide her.
"Winnie, they will try to kill Jason, Calliope and Nessarose along with us." Mary said.
"Nay. We shall protect them." Winifred said.
"How?" Jason, Calliope and Nessarose asked in unison.
"Should we die, you three shall not age nor shall you die. You will only resume your ageing should you meet your soulmates." Winifred answered, before she, Mary and Sarah cast the spell on the three teens, all of whom winced when they felt a burning sensation on their right arms. But they had no time to question it as the door was forced open. Within minutes, the Sanderson sisters were stood on barrels outside the cottage with nooses around their necks, while Jason, Calliope and Nessarose were each restrained by two villagers.
"Winifred Sanderson, I shall ask one final time. What hast thou done with Thackery Binx?" The town reverend questioned.
"Well, I don't know. Cat's got my tongue." Winifred answered, earning laughter from Sarah and Mary.
"This is terribly uncomfortable." Sarah remarked, referring to the rope around her neck. She was trying to hide her worry over the fact her daughters and her nephew were about to be forced to watch her and her sisters die. After all, Calliope and Nessarose had only lost their father a few months ago. The sisters tried to bewitch the townsfolk by song, but sadly the townsfolk were smart enough to cover their ears. However, Elijah had been holding the spell book, so he had been forced to throw it down in order to block out the singing. The book landed in front of Jason, and flipped open to reveal one of the spells within, allowing the dark-haired teen to take the opportunity he saw.
"Fools! All of you! My mother's ungodly book speaks to you! On All Hallow's Eve when the moon is round, a virgin shall summon our family from under the ground. They will be back! And all of Salem should fear the day they return!" Jason shouted. Calliope and Nessarose felt the curse take effect, thanks to their own magic, and knew that they would one day see their mother and aunts again. Winifred, Mary and Sarah couldn't help but laugh at the looks of fear on the faces of the townsfolk, but they were also proud of Jason for coming up with such a quick solution. Sadly, it didn't last as the barrels were knocked from under the sisters, causing the nooses to tighten and end the sisters' lives. The three cousins slumped down as all their fight left them and they were released. They could only be thankful that death had taken their family quickly, so they hadn't had to watch them suffer. Jason put his arms around his cousins, pulling them close to him. He couldn't help but feel sorry for them, as only yesterday they had celebrated their seventeenth birthday. The trio barely noticed as the townsfolk left, until for a reason unknown, only Thackery's parents remained.
"Spare us thy pity, Mr Binx. We knew this loss was inevitable as soon as the town came knocking at the door." Calliope spoke without looking at the man.
"And I suppose thou cannot tell me what became of my son?" Mr Binx asked.
"Only that we cannot undo what was done to him. Aunt Winifred's magic is far too powerful." Nessarose answered. She knew that admitting that they were the ones to curse Thackery would most likely lead to their own deaths, except for the minor fact her mother and aunts had spelled the three of them to stay alive for who knows how long.
"If the three of you need a place to stay, you are welcome to stay with us." Mrs Binx told them.
"Thank you for the kind offer, but we must decline. The Salem townsfolk fear us just as much as they did our family. It would be all too easy for them to turn on us and condemn us to the same fate as our family. We have suffered enough by being made to watch them die and are now forced to live with the knowledge we will never see them again." Jason said. The two adults nodded in understanding, before they too left the scene. When it was clear the Binx parents were gone, the cousins used their magic to take down the bodies of the Sanderson Sisters. They then proceeded to create a large enough hole in the ground, followed by three coffins, in which they laid the bodies, allowing themselves one last look before closing and sealing the coffins. Then they used their magic to lower the coffins into the ground and cover them with earth. Once they were done, the three cousins went back into the cottage, though Jason made sure to retrieve his mother's spell book from where it lay on the ground. Once inside, they stood gathered around the cauldron.
"So, we're essentially immortal now, and we won't start ageing again until we meet our soulmates. How are we even meant to know when we have met our soulmates?" Jason questioned.
"Well, when our family cast that spell, I felt a burning sensation on my right arm. Maybe that has something to do with it." Nessarose suggested. The three immediately pulled their right sleeves up, and discovered each of them had a name written in cursive on their right wrists. On Calliope's wrist was the name Veronica Sawyer; on Nessarose's wrist was the name Heather Chandler; and on Jason's wrist was the name Heather McNamara.
"I'm guessing these are meant to be our soulmates' names. But I have no idea what they look like, nor when we will meet them." Calliope said.
"We could try our spell we created that lets us glimpse the future. I don't think it would be too dangerous, because all we would be doing is putting faces to names." Jason said. Calliope and Nessarose considered it for a few moments, before they nodded to show their agreement. The cousins combined their magic to cast the required spell, causing a viewing portal to appear. Within the portal was an image of three girls, with names below the images.
"Their clothing doesn't look anything like ours, nor anywhere else in the world that we've seen." Jason noted.
"Which means our soulmates have not even be born yet, and quite frankly may not be for quite some time." Nessarose said.
"Then perhaps we might keep each other company in our apparently eternal lives." A new voice spoke, earning confused looks from the three until a black cat jumped up onto the table next to them, and they recognised it to be Thackery.
"But why would you want to stay with us? We're the ones who cursed you." Calliope said.
"I know, but even I could see how reluctant you were to cast the spell. You didn't want to disappoint your family. That is something I can understand. And you might have noticed that I cannot show myself to my parents in my current form." Thackery told them.
"I suppose that's true. And since we've got who knows how long until we meet our soulmates and resume ageing, I guess we can continue working on creating new spells and improving all our old ones." Jason said. All four of them knew that while they were going to be around for a very long time, at least they did have each other for company so that they didn't have to face the coming years alone.
