Chapter 13

When Sanvika arrived at the construction site, Vivaan was instructing some workers. He appeared busy, so Sanvika watched him for a while. Actually, the image of Vivaan working was quite an amusing thing for Sanvika. She knew him since he was a kid and he had never been so keen on business or work. He did not even want to inherit the business. But now he is working as if he is a professional and had been doing it for quite a while.

Vivaan was wearing a pair of jeans, a t-shirt and a jacket. There was a yellow safety helmet on his head. It was quite hot that day and his forehead sprouted sweat. His complexion had got darker in constant exposure to the sun. As she watched him, Sanvika began to feel weird inside as she felt that he was looking insanely hot. She bit her lips. She hesitated to approach him.

She almost turned around to come another time when Vivaan turned around and saw her. He looked troubled. Sanvika just waited. Even when she was angry when she had come there, she had lost her resolve when she saw Vivaan and felt like she did.

Vivaan sprinted to her and came to a stop in front of her. "Hey..." he said.

"Hey?" She asked.

"Em..." He was hesitating and trying to figure out what to say. "I figured you will come eventually." He said finally.

Now the anger was coming back to Sanvika. Vivaan could see it in her eyes. "Look, I am not here because I want to be, okay... I did not even come to see you. So you cannot be mad at me that I came here."

"I am not mad at you for coming here." She said. She got confused, "Wait. Did you think I don't want you here?"

"Eh...." Now Vivaan was confused, "You want me here?"

"I don't mind you are here."

"Wait. Really? But last time...."

"Last time," She stopped... She did not know what to say. She opened and closed her mouth a few times. "Well, things are different from last time?"

"How? You still don't want to be with me. Or... Do you want to be with me?"

"Eh..."

"What is 'Eh'. Did you change your mind?" Hope twinkled in Vivaan's eyes.

"No."

"Then?"

"It's complicated."

"Explain to me then."

"Listen..." she stepped closer... "I am right now angry with you okay."

"You said you were not angry with me."

"I am not angry with you for being here. I am angry with you because you are here and you did not come see me."

"Oh..." He came to a realisation only then.

"Yeah..."

They stood in silence for a while. It was an awkward silence. What will they say to each other after what happened in Mumbai last time?

"Hm... Do you... Do you want to get something to drink?" Vivaan said at last.

"Okay..."

They sat on the beach, with cans of beer in hand. Both were silent. Sanvika looked at Vivaan, but Vivaan was just looking at the sea. Vivaan was always the talkative one of the two. And Sanvika was the more composed, silent one.

"How have you been?" Sanvika asked at last.

Vivaan stayed silent, almost as if thinking.

"Vivaan..."

"I don't know exactly," He said finally. "How I am." He wiped the sweat from his forehead. "So don't ask me. How are you?"

Sanvika shrugged. "Vivaan..."

"By the way," he cut in, "The resort project that is your mother's idea. Not my parents. She plotted with my parents. She really wants you to come back."

Sanvika's face darkened. She looked down in dismay. "She..." She started in anger. She bit her lip to prevent herself from cursing at her own mother. Her face flared up red. Vivaan noticed. "You have to understand. She is your mother."

She looked up at Vivaan.

"You don't understand," She said.

"What do I not understand, Vicky?" He asked. "You just left one day. Suddenly. I know that you had been sad for a while before you left. But still, it was too sudden. And that day in the hotel, what was that? You told aunty something like she knows why you left... What was that about?"

Sanvika pulled her leg up and put her hand around it. She looked ahead at the sea. "I don't want to talk about it."

"With me? You don't want to talk about that with me?" He asked. "I am your best friend. Your... I don't know, what am I to you?"

She just looked at him. Her hair flew in wind. "I will tell you someday, Vivaan," She said, "Just not today."

"Why?"

"Just...." She waded away her hair. "I have to go back to the restaurant. It's soon lunchtime. Since the Film festival is going on, the crowd is double. I could come because Mr Flower is helping out. But he won't be able to manage alone at lunchtime."

"So Mr Flower is still around, huh?" There was dismay in Vivaan's voice.

"Of course. Why?" She did not register it for a second. "Wait. Are you getting jealous?" Sanvika could not believe it. Even Vivaan was embarrassed about that, so he looked away. "Who was it who told me to give Mr Flower a chance?" Sanvika asked mocking.

"So, are you?" Vivaan looked back at her with intense eyes. Sanvika was taken aback for a second by those eyes.

"Are you what?" She asked, distracted by his eyes.

"Giving Mr Flower a chance?" He asked.

Sanvika came back to her conciance. "Hm... Well, you wanted me to give him a chance before."

"Well, things are not like before now." He snapped.

"Exactly..." She said.

"What 'exactly'...?"

"You...changed so suddenly." She whispered. "Why did you suddenly start to like me?"

Vivaan opened his mouth to explain, but it seemed like he was struggling to put his emotions and thoughts into words. Sanvika just smiled and got up. "Drop by the restaurant. Everybody is eager to meet you." She patted his shoulder and turned around to walk

But Vivaan caught her hand. She looked back at him.

"It's not suddenly," He said.

"Huh?"

"Liking you. I did not 'suddenly' start to like you. I just realised it suddenly. Maybe I have liked you since always. I grew up believing that you are my girl. Subconsciously you were mine. Always." Sanvika's heart skipped a beat. There was so much warmth and sincerity in his voice.

"I did not think that was a big deal," Vivaan continued. "We will get married anyway. The marriage was a default in my mind. And so... you will end up with me, anyway. But whenever you cried, my heart ached. And I smiled at your smile. You remember right, you were really sad after the breakup with Kyle, and I planned the Grece trip. I planned it only for you. Because I could not stand that you are sad. Even if I was with Jaime at that time; when you got sad, all my attention was on how to make you happy again... I thought that was just friendship. But when you were ignoring me and being mean the last time I came to Goa, things somehow..." he did not continue.

"Somehow what?" She asked.

"Never mind... I will drop by the restaurant later tonight if that is okay."

Sanvika nodded. She pretty much could guess what he had felt when she did ignore him and was mean to him. She bit her lips and suppressed the questions she had left to ask. It was getting late to return to the restaurant. She really could not spare any more time.

"See you then," She said. Vivaan nodded. She walked off.
