Swara's Pov
"How should I fix it?" sitting at the edge of my queen sized bed, I thought to myself while seeing my broken white coloured Dreamcatcher. This dreamcatcher has been with me eversince I had my own room after my 12th birthday. People believe that dreamcatchers are sacred things. They filter our dreams and tend to show us good dreams.
Well, I don't know whether I believe it or not but definitely I love my dreamcatcher a lot! I am emotionally attached to it. Its beautiful soft white feathers which run down the willow hoop having a woven flower in it, and to emphasize its charm, there are some small silver beads which are more than enough to make me go fancy over it on the first look itself.
But now seeing its middle flower broken, it tears my heart. I decide to ask my mom to fix it, the first thing in morning.
Then my mind starts wandering to different things when a soft voice coming from outside breaks my reverie. I was confused as to who it can be so late at night. I go to my balcony taking my sweater, just to see that it's rather a boy, maybe a year or so elder to me, mumbling to himself.
Now I see him clearly even under the flickering on the street bulb. It's HIM. My first crush ever. HE was wearing a red hoodie and was probably fixing his bicycle's chain. Ohhh!!! He have such a melodious voice! And do he have any idea about how adorable he looks!!
I suddenly wanted to shout a 'Hi' to him but stopped seeing a beautiful smile on his face whilst he continues to sing.
I just started to memorize the tune of the song when he sits on his bicycle and starts cycling till he is far from my sight. But I just stand there stunned! What just happened?!! He saw me? Did he really 'WINKED' at ME??! My eyes bulging out of my sockets are a proof of my freezed condition. Ohhh My gosh! I am going insane!!! I just continue to stare at an unknown point to understand the turmoil inside my body.
Wink??? Like really a wink, that too at me!?
"Oh dear, stop freaking that was just a wink and not a kiss.!" , my mind snap at me.
Whhaaaattt?? What am I thinking? Arghhhh!!!
God help me!!!
I descend the stairs, putting a halt to my unknown over-whelming emotions, and head to kitchen to have water. Just in time I see my dad leaving the hall, to enter his bedroom, but not before passing me a warm smile.
A smile that indicates that he is so proud on me. A smile that shows his unwavering trust on me. A smile that make my heart warm and I smile back in return wishing him a good night sleep.
I am Swara Kapoor. I would turn 16 next month. I live in Williston, Canada, with my parents and my sister Suhani. My dad, Sanjeev Kapoor owns S&SK garments store. S&S standing for Swara and Suhani. He is the best dad ever. He knows his duty as the head of the family as well as a Ceo. There would be hardly anyone who wouldn't get influenced by my dad. He is a true gem. My mom, Avantika Kapoor is very supportive, kind hearted, and a gorgeous looking lady who made my dad fall in love with her madly on her first sight in Goa beach. Mom and dad are the support system of each other and I really look forward to be like them.
My parents are so proud on me and I really wish that I won't ever let them down.
I feel as the most luckiest girl alive.
Suddenly I hear my inner voice snap at me," Don't say loud. People believe that it won't last longer if we did".
Gulping hard my fear, I have water and turn to switch off the light when I hear some footsteps on our lobby. On reaching there I am shocked out of wits as I see two maskmen, looking like robbers. I scream as soon as I see them. My parents reach the scene just in time to get in the fiery fight with the thieves.
Minutes later, I hear a sound of a gun shot, followed by a scream and then everything fell silent as if nothing happened. I carefully but with sudden fear scanned everyone to check any signs of injury but no. There weren't any. Then looking down, I see bleeding from my stomach. Isn't it supposed to pain? Why there is no feeling of pain but just terror and fear clenching my heart as tightly as possible.
The thieves run away as soon as my parents hurry forward to catch me in their arms to hold me from falling on the floor.
I wanted to shout for my parents who were crying but not a word is getting out from my choked throat. With great difficulty, I manage to whisper," Maa... Maaa... Daa...dd daa...dd maaa..."
"Ting ting... Ting ting...
Ting ting... Ting ting..."
I jerk and analyse my surrounding. Oh God! I am in my room?!! Was I dreaming? How I slept? Probably I slept when I was in deep thoughts as I had a tiring day yesterday! I close my alarm which is showing me time 4:05am. I sit with the support of the headboard with my hands tightly clasped on my folded knees and my eyes shut tightly with fear. There is no motion in my room except for the tick-tock of the clock, the rising of my chest up and down, pointing out that I am alive and the continuous tears that are falling even from my closed eyes. My dream still crystal clear, was revolving in my head making me want to cry out loud.
I, knowing very well that it was just a bad dream and my parents are in their good health, sleeping rather peacefully, still can't help to fight the urge to see them myself as well as Suhani, who is now 5 yrs old and sleeps with them.
I stand with the support of my bed as my wobbly legs betray to support me. I take my clutch which helps me in standing and slowly makes my way to my parents room to reassure myself.
After reassuring myself, I felt some relief in me but still something was disturbing me. I see the time and it's quarter to five. Yeah, I am a early riser and I always walk around our garden to see many beautiful flowers blooming but the dream has taken a great toll in my mind that I am now a bit afraid to step out. And did I tell you that I am handicapped? No?? Okay, so let me now tell you that my left leg do not respond to me and I walk using clutches but I am not sad or gloomy about it.
To pass my time I start reading my favourite book but neither my mind nor my heart is in the book.
I go to kitchen and help myself with the breakfast.
My mom joined me early in the hall sofa than I expected. I laid my head on her lap and she asked while stroking my hairs softly,"Shona dear... Is something wrong? You look all sad and gloomy? I even saw you entering our room then leaving quietly. Is there something you like to share?"
I looked up to see her concerned filled eyes but I can't let her stress. So I just smiled a bit, and said, " It is nothing Maa. My dreamcatcher broke and I saw a bad dream so I just freaked out a little. But believe me, now I am okay."
She playfully hits my forehead and murders stupid. Then she smiles a bit and says," Shona, you didn't had a dream just because your dreamcatcher broke but you had a dream because of the fear and insecurity inside your heart. Let your heart free and do whatever you wish for, you will feel a great change in yourself. "
I nod, trying to understand the depth of her words. "Remember Shona, we will always support you and show you the correct path but only YOU can fight for yourself. Only you can help yourself by overcoming all your fears" she added. She knows me so much!.Her words definitely made my heart swell with pride for her.
Later that evening, she fixes the broken dreamcatcher and that makes me forget the bad experience but not the lesson it taught me.
A few days after that fearful dream, I notice that I am keenly looking forward to meet that boy and I always hum that tune which I heard in my dream. Hey, let me tell you one thing that I met that boy for the first time in Davidson park where he came as my saviour and my prince charming. From that time he always come to meet me but unfortunately, in my dreams.
END OF SWARA'S POV
___________
Flashback
Williston is fully covered with snow even though it's just the onset of winter season. Davidson park in Williston, becomes the centre of attraction, especially in this season for all the natives as well as tourists in the country, due to large number of games conducted here by the famous TRIFFIN COMPANY, the shopping markets around having the best festive clothes, and the skating ground having the most beautiful skating dances performed by all age groups just to get the title of 'Dancing star of the year.'
As every year, this year too, the ground is highlighted by many glittering lights, heaven like decorated Christmas trees stand tall, all around the ground like the soldiers at the border, and in the centre, standing with pride, is the huge Christmas Tree embedded with different decorative materials and on top, lies the biggest star ever with 'MERRY CHRISTMAS' written beautifully on it. Below it is written "WELCOME 2013".
Swara, with her parents who held 1 and a half year cute doll like girl, roamed around the shops for her and her sister's favourite toys and candies. The sweet aroma of the candies, cakes, jellies and the dishes filled the air which just increased the number of items in the 11 year old Swara's list.
The children were having chocolate muffins lost in their own world while their parents were busy in looking around the ground.
Few minutes later, Swara hear the gasps of her parents. She looks up only to find her mother faking a angry pout and looking at Suhani, who in return is looking at her mother innocently. Looking at this, both Swara and Sanjeev break into fits of laughter.
Afterall it was a memory to behold that their dear Suhani is wholly covered with chocolate and still looking so adorable asking her Mom to have some.
After a good hardwork of Avantika, to make Suhani look pretty decent and after spending a good family time, they again start to walk where Swara was taking them. The colgate smile and extreme happiness on their daughter's face was quite a indication to her parents that she almost wanted to grab everything and anything in her way. But they knew that Swara is a goal oriented child and knows what is she doing and what she wants to do.
Swara did try different flavours and dishes but ate less as much as possible as she had a skating competition. It was not just a skating competition for her, but her life. She has enjoyed skating ever since the age of 4 and her mentor and ideal was her mother who had won many awards in it.
They were heading towards the skating area when a fair looking boy with a few locks of his dark brown hair peeping out of his furry cap, approached them, panting heavily as he just won a running race. He forwarded his hand towards Sanjeev which held a black purse. Then, taking a long breath, he says, "Excuse me sir. I think that you just left your wallet on the counter of one of the toy shop there. I saw that it had photos of your daughters, so I came to return it to you."
Sanjeev was surprised but then smiles widely at the honesty of the young boy who is almost looking of the same age as of Swara. He bends to the level of the boy and says, "That's so sweet of you my child. Thank you so much."
"It's alright Sir. It was my responsibility. "
"Ohh so mature talks... Hmm Okay then... You got a right point there child. So now it's my turn to do my part of job. To fulfill my responsibility towards you for your honesty right?"
The boy looked confused but when he saw that the man has started opening his wallet, he immediately hold his hands to stop his actions and nods a no saying, "Please sir. Don't do that. I don't want anything. I just came to return your wallet."
But Sanjeev tried his luck for the next time," Child, atleast take this as a Christmas present. I know your parents won't mind that."
The boy stood firm in his decision. "Sir that is so kind of you but believe me it's not needed. But if you insist so much then I will take it from you next time. Thank you sir. Wish you and your family Merry Christmas and a great new year ahead." Bowing a little, the boy left and disappeared among the crowd. Sanjeev was amazed to see a small boy talking with so maturity that he wondered how would he be after some couple of years. He even thought himself foolish for not even asking the boy, his name. Coming back from all the thoughts, he joins his family to resume the walk towards the skating area.
On the other hand, the same boy ran and stood beside an elderly man who was biding bye to his colleagues. The man turns his head, looks down and raises his eyebrows in question. In reply to which, the boy just smiles and nods. The man smiles wide and pats the boy's back and says, "Sanskar, I am proud of you my son. You are such a humble man. Sanskar, your Mom called twice. I think we should get going home."
He is Abhishek Malhotra, the most trusted and loyal manager of the Triffin company which is headed by Steve Rocher. Inspite of having a high post, he is down to earth and respects everyone's views. Abhishek Malhotra lives in Sidney but never misses to visit Davidson Ground every year, saying that he is responsible for the proper functioning of the staffs working here, just an excuse to show his son round the stalls and games to celebrate a great Christmas Eve.
"Dad before we go, I wanted to see Cassie's skating. She personally requested me. Please dad."
"Sure son. Infact I will be accompanying you. I almost forgot that I needed to check out the security measures pulled there in case of any emergency."
A wide smile takes it's place on Sanskar's face expressing his gratitude to his dad. "Thank you so much Dad. I am sure Cassie would be suprised to see me", he adds with a giggle.
Both turns to go to the skating court when Abhishek continues, "Obvious thing Sanskar. Afterall, you are the only one who irritates her like hell and now I even have lost the count of the times she has complained about YOU saying 'Uncle see what your devil son is upto'. Who will say that she is 6 years older to you and it's not the other way round." Saying this both laugh out loud.
Abhishek leaves his son to enjoy by himself and goes to have a bit of talk on security measures with the authorities, responsible for the precautions. Sanskar, not so fond of crowds and noise, goes and stands at a lone corner.
He looks around to analyse his surroundings, perks of being a son of a manager, when his eyes fall on a figure. A figure of a cute girl who is smiling and clapping in excitement but is a bit nervous from inside. Her big doe like eyes are a mirror image to all the ragging emotions inside her.
He instantly recognises her, to be the daughter of the man, whom he returned the wallet. Sanskar tries to remove his eyes from her but her cute antics make sure that his eyes stay glued to her. Scrunching her eyebrows, joining her hands, murmuring a prayer, then biting her nails, but then candidly smiling and clapping once the performance is over.
"Hey Sanskar. Suprised to see you here man. Came to watch Cassie's performance?" Says Ken, Cassie's brother, joining Sanskar and distracting him.
"Hi Ken. Merry Christmas! Yep, actually to watch the stunned look on her face on seeing me here. I hope she doesn't faint," saying this they both laugh out loud.
"Then you need to wait for few more minutes as she is now second to perform."
Turning to the court area, and resting his hands on the railing, Sanskar says,"Ohh. Who's next then?"
"The girl in the grey jacket there. Believe me, she is so good at skating at this age that many adults have lost from her." Saying this Ken raises his hand and points it to someone.
Following the direction, Sanskar's eyes settle on the same girl who is now standing and about to enter the court for her performance.
As if on cue, she turns her head and looks at their direction.
Sanskar sees the sparkle in her eyes and a wide smile appearing on her lips when she waves at their direction.
