Chapter 40 || Bitter

"there's a what?!" namjoon half yells, staring at the equally frustrated younger male, as he groans in his palms, running out of everything in the world to curse at now. "are you fucking crazy, park jimin?! leave that girl alone, come on!"

"it's not my fault!" jimin retorts, then forced himself to pause and take a deep breath, before focusing back on the problem. "i know it's messed up, but hyung, please i really didn't know about this. dad just called me and somehow he knew about me not working and— and apparently 'losing my mind after a girl' to exactly quote his words."

"is it on the news?" namjoon massages his temples, "i haven't seen anything like that before this."

"no, it's not. but i don't know how long it'll be that way. people know me and taehyung, him especially, and there have been rumours about him being involved with a girl. jiah's face and name is not out yet, although i'm pretty sure it won't take too much time for her to be the biggest headline."

"taehyung is careless." namjoon mutters, picking up his phone and dials to his friend, who works as taehyung's manager. the line is answered, making him smile for a second at the cheerful voice as usual. "ah, hello hoseok-ah."

"hey, namjoon. long time, man! how's life?"

"bad," namjoon groans.

"oh— why? what happened?"

"okay, so you already might know this— i mean, about jiah and taehyung?"

"ah yeah. taehyung's crazy after her. i've tried to talking to him so many times but he just doesn't listen. he has stopped responding to me whenever i bring her up now. he's so annoying."

"i can understand, i have a similar guy." namjoon says, clearing his throat when jimin narrows his eyes at him. "anyway, i didn't notice it sooner, but jimin just told me about the rumours going on about taehyung and jiah. is the media after them?"

"i know what you're worried about, and trust me taehyung has got it all dealt with. if he didn't step in in the beginning, this would be all over the news by now. the media will keep their mouths and cameras shut, except for some really rebellious ones. but don't worry aout them either, i'm looking into it. jiah's name and face will not be out, i promise you that."

"great," namjoon sighs in relief, "thank you, hoseok. she's been through a lot, and even right now, jungkook has been so caught up with everything. he didn't even return home since yesterday."

"what?" jimin speaks up, frowning at the information and stands up, "what the fuck? why?"

"who's there with you?"

"jimin." namjoon replies to hoseok, while glancing at the said male, "jungkook is with yoongi ever since he came back from daegu. he called me to fill in. they were at yoongi's place this afternoon with jiah."

"with jiah?" jimin gasps, "how is she? she is okay? why didn't he call me?"

"i don't know? are you guys even friends?" namjoon arches up a brow, making jimin mutters another few curses before looking away. he picks up his keys and motions his hand for namjoon to know that he's leaving. "hey! don't go there right now!" namjoon stands up, only to be interrupted by jimin stopping near the door, as though he saw a ghost entering.

a few seconds later, jungkook comes in with jiah, who doesn't spare anyone a glance but jungkook does make a weird face at the sight of jimin. "yo, what the fuck are you doing at our house?" jungkook hisses.

"i—" jimin gulps, his eyes fixed on jiah and moves closer gradually, "jiah... i— are you okay?" he asks softly, scanning her from head to toe, but never dares to touch her for the fear that she might flinch, considering that she looks so fragile.

he didn't even expect a reply until she noded her head, keeping her eyes low. namjoon approaches them after keeping his phone aside, quickly standing in front of the girl and cups her face, looking at her with concerned eyes, "stupid girl, do you have any idea how worried we were?" he scolds her lightly and pulls her into a hug, "did you talk to yoongi?"

"yeah," she hums, "he was worried too."

"of course he was. he wasn't here, or else he wouldn't even have let this get so bad for you." namjoon says, patting her head and smiles at her, "anyway, where's our little buddy?"

"he's with yoongi hyung," jungkook says, "he said jiah should relax for a bit and not be worried about him."

"that's good." namjoon nods, "take her inside and tell the staff to cook something for both of you."

"yeah," jungkook smiles, draping his arm around jiah and says, "let's go, the punching bag missed you."

jiah looks up at him, then at jimin and namjoon, not saying anything in front of them and just nods, walking to the basement with him. "where are they going?" jimin asks namjoon, getting a smile in return.

"gym. last time she had a bad day, jungkook brought her here and helped her take out pent up anger and tension. and i guess it helped her."

"she's been here before?" jimin says with more surprised and namjoon looks at him, nodding his head. "damn,"

"they're friends, jimin. if jiah has one friend who she messes with and can also complain to, it's jungkook. when you were blind in love, blind to even see that you were hurting her, jungkook was trying to be her friend and do something that she actually enjoys. yes she has me and yoongi too, but we're quite older than her and i just know she's not as free with us as she is with jungkook." namjoon says with a faint smile.

jimin just stares at the door behind which jiah disappeared with jungkook, sighing at himself and his fate. shaking his head, he tears his eyes off the doorway to the basement, and turns to the elder, "uh what about my problem? dad wants to see me."

"go and meet him, and try to tell them that you're not 'losing your mind after a girl'."

"yeah, i'm scared about their reaction. more about mom's reaction. she's really into the 'daughter-in-law' thing."

"oh yeah, right. isn't that why yoy haven't visited them in months?" namjoon nibbles on his lip, getting a nod from jimin. "god, okay, listen. if they do take it in that direction, just be clear to them. communication is the key, remember that. tell them you're not interested in getting married right now."

"can you go with me?" jimin asks, scrunching his face, "y'know i can't say anything against my mom. she's... scary."

"what are you? five? just go and deal with it." namjoon scolds, "and please try to keep jiah away from all this, yeah?"

"i'll try." jimin nods, "i'm going then, and i'll come back to the company tomorrow. no more stupid moves."

"that's better," namjoon smiles, patting jimin's shoulder, "don't stress out too much. love makes us do crazy things. it's a good thing that you're back to thinking straight."

jimin shrugs it off, giving a smile to the elder before heading out, busy thinking about what he's going to tell his parents and most importantly about his return back to taking his company in his hands and compensate all the losses he might have faced by now. although, he trusts namjoon beyond words, it's still a matter of concern because afterall namjoon is not the ceo. it's jimin and therefore he is the one who should be responsible for anything that goes on in the company.

namjoon, on the other hand, glances at the basement doorway, following his thoughts and decides to check up on jungkook and jiah, just in case they needed someone wiser to talk to. heading down the stairs, he opens the door just a little to peek inside, finding jiah sitting on the floor like an annoyed child, who is not interested in whatever her adults are making her do. jungkook tells her something and she just huffs, looking away. the boxing glove is one in her hand and the other lying next to her feet.

jungkook crouches down, visibly calm and gentle as he sits down with his legs crossed, removing the glove from her hand and tosses the pair aside. namjoon smiles at him, feeling like a father watching his son trying to cheer up his sad friend. shaking his head, he closes the door and leaves, not wanting to disturb the two. his phone rings this time, showing yoongi's name and he answers quickly.

"hello," namjoon says.

"namjoon-ah, are jungkook and jiah there?"

"yeah, they arrived a few minutes ago." he hums, "is everything okay?"

"uh kind of, i mean yes for now." he sighs on the line, making namjoon frown in confusion, "actually i wanted to talk to you about it. there are chances that taehyung will take the matter to court, and for that we need to be prepared."

"what? why would he do that?"

"because apparantly he really loves his son and doesn't want to let go of him." yoongi says.

"but— what about jiah then? she loves jihun too! she loves him more than taehyung."

"she does. and that's why we need a lawyer."

"okay, i get it. do you want me to get one? i know a friend who is a lawyer. i think he can help us if i ask him."

"sure, if you can do that. i'm sorry to bother you, joon. but jiah's really not in the position to fight that man. he has messed her up pretty bad. i don't get why he's even alive."

namjoon sighs at that, smiling sincerely at the words, "it's alright, hyung. jiah's like my sister too. i'll be more than happy to help her when she needs it. please don't apologise."

"thank you, namjoon. you have no idea how much it means for us. and about the fees and all, just let me know an—"

"it's fine, don't worry. i'll manage that." namjoon chuckles, "really hyung, it's the least i could do."

"she wouldn't let you pay for her." yoongi says.

"we can deal with that. she's much younger than us, and when we say something, she'll have to listen." namjoon says, huffing fakely which earns him a soft chuckle from yoongi.

"thanks a lot. i'll come over in a while, drop jihun to jiah, and then we can talk about the legal proceedings."

"sure, that's sounds good." namjoon hums. "and hyung, one more thing. i know you must be worried about her the most, so just relax, she'll be okay. jungkook's helping her too, thanks for trusting him."

"oh yeah, jungkook. i'm surprised he's done so much for her. you raised a nice kid, joon." yoongi says with a smile evident in his voice, that makes namjoon swell with pride. "alright, that was weird. i'll hang up now." with that yoongi ends the call, leaving namjoon to sigh, shaking his head as he stares at the ceiling for a moment, thinking about his old friend who left the country to become a lawyer. it's been years since they last talked, but for jiah, namjoon might just do it.

•••

"it's not like that," jiah sighs, leaning back against the ring that easily bears her weight and keeps her body steady even though she's not using any strength to keep herself straight. jungkook's eyes never leave her face, trying his best read her through and understand the things she can't openly say. "i'm okay."

he heaves out a deep breath, raking a hand through his hair and clears his throat, "look, first of all, let's not lie to each other, alright? it's okay if you don't wanna talk about it—"

"i don't wanna talk about it." she says, head low with her eyes fixed on her lap, "i wanna go home, jungkook. and no, not yoongi oppa's house... my place. my apartment."

"oh... you don't wanna talk to me? not about this, but like anything?" jungkook asks softly, tilting his head at an angle, staring at jiah with a delicate gaze, "it's been a while since we hung out."

"i'm tired today." she mumbles.

"look at me," so she does, gradually lifting her eyes up from her lap to jungkook's face, meeting his dark pupils, staring at her soul. she nibbles on her lip, about to look away, when jungkook shifts closer and cups her face, smiling a little, "why are you scared, jiah? why are you scared of me? you know, it's— it's me, jungkook. please don't force yourself to be a certain way around me. didn't you say that we're friends?"

yes, she did. it was just a few weeks back, making her realise how fast eveything happened. one day she was telling jaesung about jungkook's caring yet dorky nature, and the next day she was crying over taehyung. it's been a roller coaster of all sorts of negative emotions, driving her numb to the triggers anything other than taehyung himself. his face, his voice, his touch, simply all of him is what jiah feels like she's about. the way he called her name, the way he held her so possessively, when he kissed her like he meant it, when he slept in the same bed as her, holding her through the night as though he didn't make her bawl her eyes out during the day.

it was crazy. jiah's surprised how she even got out of that apartment when taehyung was still there. what if she goes back and taehyung's still there? he's going to be so angry. furious to say the least. midst all the thoughts, jiah feels the hand on her cheek moving down. she freezes for it all feels too familiar, suddenly taehyung's all over her again and there's an urgent need to stay still and not be a bad girl. fuck. she shuts her eyes close, a tear dropping from her eyes, taehyung's name slipping out of her lips, getting jungkook confused for he watches her stiffening in her place all tensed up.

"jiah," he calls out in a whisper, "it's me, jungkook. taehyung's not here, baby." he assures, pulling her to his chest and rubs her back, "he's gone, okay? it's just me and you here."

"please don't touch me..." she hushes out, pulling herself back, "i'm— i'm sorry, jungkook. just please i—i—i— i need a minute..." she breathes heavily, clenching and unclenching her hnds and looks around the place. one of her tremblings hands move up to remove the hair from her face as she squints her eyes to focus better on the things around her.

spot five things you can see.

jiah nibbles on her lips, rubbing the tears off her face despite the new ones running down instantly as she looks around in search of random objects that her eyes catch first. gloves. boxing gloves, punching bag, dumbbells... it's too hasty and blurry for jiah to focus and lost the count of the things she easily spotted. the trick doesn't always work alone? the restlessness grows, making her unknowingly clutch onto jungkook's hand tighter, needing to just disappear or hide herself away from the thing called life.

she wants the constant buzzing to stop, for the lights to be dim, and the pain in her head to just reside away. for a moment she didn't want to feel at all, just black out and sleep until everything was actually fine. maybe that day will never come, and then jiah wouldn't have to wake up at all.

"jiah," jungkook rubs her hands, leaning closer and makes her looks at him, "shh, calm down." he whispers softly, caressing her neck while gently pushing her hair back, "can you hear me, baby?"

"don't..." jiah mumbles.

"i'm not doing anything, okay? you can relax. open your eyes." he says, holding her hand throughout the process until she opens her eyes and looks at jungkook, "good job. now i need you to be very attentive, alright? are you listening?"

jiah stares at him, tears streaming down her face, but she's held still in his arms and under his eyes. jungkook moves his hand slowly, wiping off the tears from her cheeks, never breaking the eye contact, feeling bad on seeing the pain her innocent eyes hold, screaming for help and someone to take her out of all the mess taehyung got her tangled in.

"why do you cry with such pretty eyes?" he whispers, then glances down to her lips, "you lie with these beautiful lips. and your hands, princess," he brings up the hand that she's been holding on to, showing it to her, "why do they shake when asking for help?"

jiah stays quiet, listening to every word that leaves his mouth, for it sounds like something has never heard before. it's something new and she might want to hear it. "it's hard to believe someone can hurt a girl like you, so pretty, so carefree, so lively, and break you until you're not yourself anymore. isn't it crazy, baby, that i felt for your charm, for your personality before anything else? i fell for the jiah that kim taehyung damaged... and what's left now is—"

"stop..." jiah whispers, gulping down a sob and places her index finger on jungkook's lips, "please stop."

"why? how long are you going to ignore the truth?" he sits down next to her, "you have to see it for yourself, admit that what taehyung did to you was wrong, and it was all his fault."

"i wanna die, jungkook..." she hushes out, staring at her shoes as she fondles with the laces, before lifting up her head and rubs her eyes, "can i hug you? i'm sorry i just— i didn't want to push you away."

"i know," he hums, opening his arm and nods for her to scoot closer. she moves directly beside him, leaning in his embrace comfortably and sniffles. "you can tell me anything, jiah."

she sighs and looks up at him, her one hand resting on his chest and the other holding her own top, "taehyung will take this to court. i can't win against him even if i give up my whole for this... he'll take my jihun away... i— i didn't listen to him. i wasn't his good girl. he's gonna be mad, jungkook. it's so bad when he's angry... he's— like, i can't tell you..."

"did he ever try to hurt you?" jungkook's hand keeps rubbing on her side in a soothing manner, letting her know that it's all okay and he's in it with her.

jiah thinks for a moment before frowning in confusion as she shakes her head as a 'no', "not physically." she says, "he would get aggressive and then it was scary. he didn't hit me yet... he promised me that he would never hurt me. physically. he used to hold me like— like, my neck," she says, clearing her throat, bringing up her hand to her neck, wrapping it placing lightly over her throat, "he would hold me like that and then just do whatever he wanted. he knows that i cannot do anything against him out of all the people... i really loved him the first time, jungkook."

jungkook's jaw clenches on hearing how taehyung treated jiah, but keeps it cool and strokes her hair assuringly, "did he ever touch you without your permission? uhm it's okay if you—"

"uh, i— i don't think so?" she nibbles on her lip.

"are you not sure of that?" jungkook frowns.

"i told you, jungkook, i couldn't say no to him. i didn't want him mad or— or for him to take jihun away from me. so, whenever he kissed me, i just quietly kissed him back. he didn't force me to have sex or like touch me in that way, but he did sleep with me and held me so tight. so safe, that i almost believed him when he said he loved me. he would sleep with me, wake me up with a kiss, hug me when i wasn't talking to him. he'd make me sit on his lap and talk so sweetly that it always had me crying in his arms. it was so... strange. eveything. i didn't know how to feel. he wasn't bad all the time, actually he was sweet. he was— i can't explain it..."

jungkook leans down, takung jiah by surprise when she feels his lips pressing to the side of her head, leaving a delicate peck before humming softly, holding her hand in his, "it's alright. i get it. and honestly, you should stop worrying about him now. i don't think he'd enjoy seeing me again."

"what did you do?" jiah asks.

"nothing that you should worry about."

jiah sighs, shaking her head, "you're underestimating him, jungkook, if you think he'll just leave me alone like this. he loves jihun and... and he won't give up. i know him that much."

"well, then let him come. we'll deal with his stubborn ass." jungkook scoffs. "don't be scared of him. jihun is your son and will stay with you."

jiah nods gradually, still uncertain of his words, but doesn't voice it out for the door of the gym is opened, drawing attention both of them as it reveals namjoon and yoongi with jihun. the boy squeals at the sight of his mother, wriggling in yoongi's arms to get down and run to her, making her smile softly.

"diah!"

yoongi chuckles at the toddler, smacking his diaper clad bottom lightly over his shorts, "she's your mamma." he says, before leaving him on the floor and watches how fast the little boy runs towards the boxing ring where jiah is sitting with jungkook. she doesn't move from her place as jungkook is the one towards the edge, leaning down just enough to have his arm stretched out for the baby.

"hey, buddy. we couldn't meet nicely before." he says with a smile, lifting the two-year-old off the floor and makes him stand on his lap. the toddler however, doesn't mind him and climbs over straight to his mother, giggling once he situates himself on her lap, standing facing her and wraps his arm around her neck for a hug.

"sit here," jiah hums, making him face jungkook before sitting him down on her lap.

"hi jihun," jungkook holds his hand out which jihun shakes weakly, staring at his face. "what happened? not recognising me anymore?"

"he's—"

"koo!" jihun chirps, pointing at jungkook and looks up at jiah, "koo, mamma! koo an' ji fw'end."

"yeah, true." jungkook grins and bumps his fist with jihun's tiny one, making the two elder males smile. "we're best friends, aren't we?"

"bes'fwend!" jihun jumps with excitement, giggling with his little teeth on display. he shifts to the space in front of him, sitting near jungkook's feet and observes the big shoes on his feet, touching the laces and tries to pull it.

"do you like my shoes, jihun?" jungkook asks.

"shoe..." the baby mumbles, but lets go of the laces instantly, finding something else more interesting. jungkook's hand. there are tattoos and some rings on his fingers, just like what jihun has seen on his daddy's hands. the shiny rings that always looked so attractive to the toddler has him moving to jungkook's lap, holding the large hand in his small one, playing with the rings.

"daddy!" the boy voices out, looking at jungkook and stands up with the support of his hand, "koo, daddy?"

"no, baby. daddy's not here." jiah says, patting jihun's back, making the boy pout for he understands what she just said. he whines in protest, looking around and calls out for taehyung, growing more upset with each second that taehyung doesn't come and take him in his arms.

"hey, what's wrong?" jungkook asks, lifting jihun up and stands on the floor, rubbing the toddler's back, getting his teary eyes to look at him. "why's ji crying? mamma's right here, see?" he says, nodding towards jiah, who forces up a smile, but fails to hide the disappointment on her face with what jihun just did. he has grown closer to his dad and it's obvious to the point where jiah can't even ignore it.

"daddy..." jihun mumbles.

"why do you want daddy when your mom is here? see, she looks upset. don't you wanna give her a hug?"

"hug?" jihun tilts his head.

"yeah, go and give mamma a hug." jungkook smiles, but jihun whines again, not even ready to get down.

"daddy!" he cries in his high pitched voice, not listening to jungkook who tries calm him down. jihun's little arms move in the air frantically, legs kicking jungkook's stomach once in a while and tears run down his chubby cheeks, wailing out for his dad.

"hey, jihun." yoongi steps forward, taking the toddler from jungkook and pats his back, making him rest his head on his shoulder. "don't be a bad boy. do you want mamma to be mad at ji?" he whispers, rubbing the baby's back, who's now sobbing more or less quietly.

"shh," namjoon tries as well, patting jihun's head, while jungkook sighs deeply, glancing back at jiah, who looks lost in thoughts.

"jiah," jungkook calls softly, going next to her and strokes her hair, "let's go, i'll cook something for you. you must be hungry."

"i'm fine," she shakes her head, taking a deep breath and turns to her son, who keeps crying for his father. she stands up to take jihun in ber arms, closing her eyes as the toddler hugs her tightly, but his pleadings to call his daddy never dies down. "we'll go to daddy..." she gives in, "don't cry."

"ji mish daddy, mamma..."

"i know," she hushes out and wipes off the tears from her son's cheeks. "don't cry, okay? or else— or else daddy's gonna be sad. he doesn't like jihun crying, right?"

jihun hums, nodding his head once and quickly quiets down, sitting silently like a good boy in jiah's making arms, making her eyes well with tears for an unknown yet familiar reason. she sniffles softly, smiling a little for jihun and pulls out her phone, giving it to him, "do you wanna watch something?"

"daddy," jihun gasps, tapping on the screen and jiah knows exactly what that means. she gulps nervously, regretting bringing her phone out in the first place, and now jihun is telling her to call taehyung.

"he must be busy. we'll talk to him later, okay?"

"daddy..." jihun pouts, stating at the screen, trying to figure out what to do so that he could talk to his dad. jiah takes the phone back, making the toddler whine again, hitting her in the process, eliciting a wince from her and the men step forward instantly. yoongi takes the toddler away, giving him a strict look while jungkook hugs jiah, stroking the back of her head.

she doesn't protest and hides herself further in his embrace, crying silently, "what do i do..." she whispers with a strained voice, tired of fighting down her sobs. "he's... he wants taehyung now. he wants his dad. what do i do?"

"he's just a child, jiah. he doesn't know what he's asking for. it's not his fault." jungkook assures her, "and it's okay, you said taehyung loved him right? isn't it normal for any child to grow close with someone who loves them and pampers them?"

"but now he won't shut up about his dad! everytime he's asking me about him! he doesn't need me anymore, jungkook... he just wants his dad." jiah mumbles, glancing at jihun, who's crying for another reason now as yoongi scolded him.

"it's not like that. he needs you, jiah. you're his mother. every child needs their mother." jungkook emphasizes.

ignoring jungkook's words, jiah just quietly stares at her son and her phone that is still in his hands. the toddler is looking down at the screen, sobbing, while his tiny hands are trying to do something to contact taehyung. wiping off her own tears, jiah approaches yoongi and her son, taking her phone and opens the contacts, taking the men by surprise when she actually dials taehyung's number.

"are you crazy?!" yoongi snaps at her, handing jihun over to namjoon and takes the phone from her, ending the call right away. "don't you want him to leave you alone after that he's done?! you don't even love him that you keep going back to that asshole!"

"what do i do?!" jiah yells back, "my son is crying for his father and i can't do anything! believe it or not, oppa, but tae did really love him. he did everything ji asked him to. no matter what time or where, if ji said something tae would do it for him... when— when i couldn't even take care of myself, tae was taking care of both of us. he made sure that our son didn't face a problem. i can't do that, oppa... just look at me right now. everything around me makes me wanna die. i can't look after my son like this, and i don't want him to cry either..."

"so you'll let taehyung take him?" yoongi asks, making her go silent, "answer me. will you let that man, who hurt you, who left all of his responsibilities of your son the first time even before he was born— take your son away from you forever?"

jiah looks down, contemplating his words and it makes her want to throw up the way her insides churn at the mere thought of letting her baby go. yet she remains quiet, not having the courage to even deny, for she's not sure if she can actually deal with all this anymore. taehyung was right, she does need him and jihun too.

"i— i wanna rest for a while." she hushes out, massaging her temples, gulping down the lump in the back of her throat, and looks at jungkook, "please take me home."

"yeah, go on. keep running away from the truth an—"

"jungkook, please. take me home. i wanna go home." jiah raises her voice, cutting yoongi off in the middle. she takes jihun in her arms and holds jungkook's hand, pleading him with her eyes to take her from here. jungkook sighs, nodding his head subtly and glances at the elder males, giving them an assuring look, promising them, yoongi specifically that he will keep her safe.

jiah heaves out a breath, once she can't feel yoongi's eyes digging holes on her back, which is when her phone buzzes in jihun's grip. it's taehyung calling her back. her throat gets dry, staring at the screen and doesn't even realise when she stops walking, making jungkook look back with a questioning frown. he follows her gaze down, realising it's the call and takes it from jihun, declining it without a second thought and keeps the phone in his pocket, wrapping his arm around jiah.

"let's go. i'll take you home." he says with a soft smile, cupping her face, "oh and we'll see a doctor first. your fever hasn't gone down even a bit since morning. i'm sorry i forgot eaelier.

jiah hums weakly, now noticing that he was right. no wonder her body felt like giving up and head kept hurting. she clears her throat, tugging on jungkook's sleeve gently when he's about to start walking again, earning a look, waiting for her to say whatever she had in mind. "can you hold, jihun, please?" she asks slowly, glancing at the toddler who looks sleepy now, resting his head on her shoulder and yawns.

"sure," jungkook nods with a smile, taking the toddler and pats his back when he lifts his head to look up what was going on. "are you tired, baby?" he asks, brushing his hand down jiah's back in a soothing manner, as he leads her outside towards his car.

"yes," jiah looks down.
