ㅤㅤㅤBehind him, he could hear Solamon placing a pile of books on top of a chair to be able to reach for the sulfur powder ━turns out Merlin did not have any gunpowder, but he did have the ingredients to make it━ on the top shelf━ the very one that was specifically prohibited from everyone but Merlin by the man himself.
ㅤㅤㅤ"This is a terrible idea. Terrible, horrible, crazy idea. Why did I agree with this again?" Hisirdoux placed his hand on his own forehead, sighing in distress.
ㅤㅤㅤ"Now you know how I feel with you and your stupid ideas." Archie rolled his eyes by his side, jumping on Merlin's table to lay down on top of his scrolls. Hisirdoux sent him a glare before glancing at Sol, who was standing on the tip of her toes to get the jar she was eyeing since they got in the workshop.
ㅤㅤㅤ"Solamon, do you have it already?"
ㅤㅤㅤ"Almost..."
ㅤㅤㅤ"You're taking way too long!"
ㅤㅤㅤ"Do you want to come here and take it yourself?!" she turned to him harshly while frowning. The pile of books she was standing on leaned to the side, making Sol look down wide-eyed and Hisirdoux move quickly to hold the pile in place. Sol tried to balance herself by holding onto the chair underneath all the books with one hand and Hisirdoux's shoulder with the other. She sighed in distress. This would've been much easier if she could use her wings. After a quick second, the pile stopped moving, and she carefully stood up again to reach for the jar again.
ㅤㅤㅤ"Just be careful..." Hisirdoux winced at the sight of Solamon stepping on one of Merlin's favorite books, he'd have to clean it before putting it back in place.
ㅤㅤㅤ"Okay." she nodded, too focused to give him another witty response. "Got it!"
ㅤㅤㅤSolamon pulled the jar with the tips of her fingers and hugged it close when it fell from the shelf.
ㅤㅤㅤ"What now?" the boy asks her as she opens the jar and takes some of the powder in her hands, looking around for a smaller container to put it in. In the end, Solamon simply puts the powder in the front pocket of her dress.
ㅤㅤㅤAt least human clothes are practical, she thought.
ㅤㅤㅤ"I need saltpeter and charcoal." she quickly places the jar back in place and pushes it back with both hands.
ㅤㅤㅤ"Oh, that's easy, then." Hisirdoux nods and goes to get the charcoal from a big barrel in the corner of the room. "How much?"
ㅤㅤㅤ"Only a few pieces should be enough." Sol jumps down the book pile, letting it fall behind her with the impulse she took. Hisirdoux grimaced at the sound, then glared at Solamon, who rolled her eyes.
ㅤㅤㅤ"How much is a few, exactly?" he asks, uncertain.
ㅤㅤㅤSolamon simply groans and turns to him, crossing her arms as she does so.
ㅤㅤㅤ"Just take a handful! Must I instruct you with everything? Are you an infant?" she scoffs when he mocks her in return. "That answers it."
ㅤㅤㅤ"Won't you two hurry up? Merlin should be coming back at any minute now." Archie gets up from the table and jumps down to squeeze in a shelf under it in the form of a kitten, coming out right after while pulling a small jar with saltpeter inside.
ㅤㅤㅤ"Thank you, Archie." Solamon nods gratefully and smiles proudly at the familiar. "It's good to have at least one helpful someone on this team, especially with a hard character like that one."
ㅤㅤㅤAs the girl points towards Hisirdoux with her head while his back is turned to them, she fails to see him roll his eyes.
ㅤㅤㅤ"Don't call this a team. That implies we are friends." the realization that she had indeed called them a team made Solamon blush in embarrassment. This time, she could think of no smart words to use as witty remarks, and Hisirdoux took that win with a confident smirk.
ㅤㅤㅤ
ㅤㅤㅤ"𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐑𝐔𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐈𝐓! You are ruining my recipe! How are you this bad at mixing? It is the easiest task in existence." Solamon pulls the bowl away from Hisirdoux as he mixed the dough so poorly that many clumps of flour would stick to the corners of the bowl "You were not supposed to add the water until after you mix the other ingredients together, now look at this consistency!"
ㅤㅤㅤ"It's really not that serious!" the boy frowned as he cleaned his hands in the apron he got from the corner of the royal kitchen. "Why won't you stop being so cruel? I wasn't this rude to you when you were demolishing those poor instruments!"
ㅤㅤㅤ"This is different. You can not afford to be this careless with cooking. It will ruin the entire thing!" she flicks his forehead, leaving behind a flour mark, and turns to Archie, who laid in an empty table before the one the two apprentices were working on. "Archie, please help your familiar. He needs to do it right."
ㅤㅤㅤ"I'm afraid I can not help with cooking, Solamon. The lack of thumbs doesn't do me any favors, see?" and to show her, he stretched out his front paws with a loud yawn and went back to laying down, this time with his back turned to them. "Besides, haven't I done enough by emptying the kitchen for you to use?"
ㅤㅤㅤ"I don't understand how it was difficult to scare those women away." the girl sighs and goes back to kneading the dough, giving up on Archie even with her reasonable argument.
ㅤㅤㅤ"By the way, I think I should ask," Hisirdoux poured the dough on the flour-covered table and started to help Solamon separate the kneaded dough into small spheres. "Where did you learn to do this? Explosive bread doesn't seem like something you would just casually know."
ㅤㅤㅤ"I like to bake, and my siblings love my baking, but sometimes I just want to do food for myself and not have to share. It's hard to do so when your family is as big as mine, so, to stop them from eating my bread, I started placing a few explosive ones randomly in the trays." she giggles at the memory. "They get too scared to try their luck."
ㅤㅤㅤ"I assume your family has magical abilities as well, then?" he looks over at her, surprisingly interested in her words. "Since they treat it so normally."
ㅤㅤㅤ"Yes, all of us do." she shrugs, now a bit tense. Solamon was a terrible liar, and to reveal the simplest of facts from her true roots was of high risk considering her current situation.
ㅤㅤㅤ"That's amazing." he smiles and goes back to separating the dough.
ㅤㅤㅤSolamon catches herself staring. She shakes her head and looks away with a second to spare as Archie looks up to watch the two apprentices, who were now in silence.
ㅤㅤㅤ
ㅤㅤㅤ𝐀𝐅𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐘 𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐒𝐇𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃, it was time to switch the ones being served with their own explosives, and the two teens had their hearts palpitating; Hisirdoux out of anxiety, Solamon out of excitement.
ㅤㅤㅤ"If we get caught I swear I━" Hisirdoux started for the fifth time since they finished the bread, now whispering since they were by the door to another one of the royal kitchens, this time the one closest to where the knights were to be served their lunch.
ㅤㅤㅤ"If you say that one more time, I will shove an explosive on your mouth and feed you to the knights instead." Solamon whispers back to him with such fury that a vain popped in her forehead. The sight made Hisirdoux hold in a giggle.
ㅤㅤㅤHe opened his mouth to repeat his words one more time, just to make her mad, but before he could, one of the servants left the kitchen and made both Hisirdoux and Solamon jump in surprise.
ㅤㅤㅤThey tried to be casual by leaning on the wall behind them, with Sol holding her tray in one hand and using her free one to pretend to fix her hair. The tray trembled in her shaky hands, something that Douxie found so funny it was hard not to smile.
ㅤㅤㅤHe put one of his hands under the tray to help her hold it up, his hand brushing against hers.
ㅤㅤㅤAs the teens tried their best to mask their nervousness, the servant glanced at the tray they were holding and frowned.
ㅤㅤㅤ"Give me that!" she pulls the tray to herself aggressively. "That is not for you to eat!"
ㅤㅤㅤAs she walks back to the kitchen while grumbling to herself, Solamon contains herself from jumping in excitement by hitting Hisirdoux in the chest multiple times, which he apparently didn't mind as he smiled through his anxiety.
ㅤㅤㅤThey both ran quickly to the room next to the kitchen and hid behind the doorway to watch from far as the knights received the trays with bread.
ㅤㅤㅤThe apprentices watched carefully as they cut a piece out of the first bread. Nothing happened.
ㅤㅤㅤ"This is so intense!" Douxie whispered, a little too close to Sol's ear for her comfort. "The anticipation is killing me!"
ㅤㅤㅤ"Shush!" she uses one hand to cover his mouth.
ㅤㅤㅤThey go back to snooping just as a knight ━blonde with badly grown facial hair, Solamon was pretty sure that was the knight that brought her here in the first place, and that thought made her stomach churn (not in fear, obviously, Solamon never felt scared)━ cut a piece of another bread.
ㅤㅤㅤThe loud explosion covered up the sound of Hisirdoux's and Solamon's laughter as the knights blinked in surprise after being drenched in dough, that had strangely turned into a liquid goo━ maybe Hisirdoux's sloppy dough had more of an effect to the magic than Sol had expected.
ㅤㅤㅤDouxie pulls Solamon away from the doorway as one of the knights looks in their direction and they both start to sneak away while giggling just in time to meet an angered Merlin by the spiral stairs on the way to the workshop.
ㅤㅤㅤ"You." his voice dripped venom. The apprentices' faces paled up.
ㅤㅤㅤ"Fuzzbuckets."
