[Chapter 4]: Maybe we are
Dear mom,
Classes have been going pretty well for me! I made a new friend beside Tsuyu, Izuku, and Ochaco. Well, at least I think we're friends... But we've been eating lunch every day together so that's a good sign! His name is Shouto Todoroki. He's pretty quiet but I think that's one of the things I enjoy about him. It's like everything he says is important. Does that make sense? Probably not... Anyways, next week we have rescue training at the USJ facility. It's gonna be nuts, I'll let you know how it goes. Miss you tons. Let me know when you're coming back to Japan!

"OCHACO! THERE'S A GIANT SALE AT THE GROCERY STORE AROUND THE CORNER. WE GOTTA GO AFTER SCHOOL!"
"WHAT? A SALE?! WE'RE DEFINITELY GOING!" She huffed in response, holding her fist up in a determined manner.
"What are you two so excited about?" Tsuyu questioned from her seat. "Aizawa's gonna get upset if you two are yelling when he comes in."
"I'M SORR- oops... I'm sorry." You dropped your tone down to a whisper. "We're gonna go to the market around the corner after school. They're having a ton of sales!"
"Really? Well, maybe I'll have to tag along if you don't mind. We're running low on rice at home." Tsuyu smiled.
"The more the merrier!" Ochaco cheered. "Anyone else we should invite (y/n)?"
"Hmmm..." You glanced around the classroom before your eyes landed on the blond sitting alone in his seat. "Hey Bakugou-"
"NO."
"Well, I tried." You chuckled. "Ochaco, why don't you ask Iida and Deku when they get here? I'll talk to Todoroki!"
"Todoroki? Are you sure he would want to go with us? Sometimes I think he doesn't like anyone besides you (y/n)..." She muttered.
"That's alright! Sometimes I think he doesn't like me either." You chuckled. "He has a bit of a hard time talking to people is all."
You glanced over to the door, noticing your half and half friend entering.
There he is!
"Good morning Todoroki!" You trotted up to him waving your hand.
"Good morning." He quietly answered.
It was a little routine the two of you had. You always exchanged good mornings, chatted a bit during your breaks maybe, and then ate lunch together. Nothing more, nothing less. You could call it a symbiotic relationship even. But you had grown to notice that Todoroki had days where it all just disappeared. He would sit in his seat and not utter a word to you at all. Not only that, but he wouldn't show up in the lunch room to meet you before heading to the roof. It was days like that that bothered you and made you question your relationship.
Were you friends?
You typically called your close friends like Tsuyu, Izuku, and Ochaco by their first names. And you tried the same once with Todoroki a few days ago, but he had shut you down and asked you to call him by his last name politely. At the time it hadn't bothered you that much, but you couldn't help but think about why his name carried so much weight to him. You wanted to know without pushing him. So, for now, you were content with just coexisting with him, even if just as acquaintances to him.

"You know you can take a break. You don't need to keep up with me (y/n)..." Todoroki causally commented, noticing your profuse panting as you attempted to run next to him.
"NO I'M FINE! BESIDES, I LIKE A CHALLENGE!" You answered through staggered huffs. "BUT I ALSO LIKE SNACKS."
It was gym class and the entirety of 1-a had to run laps around the track to warm up. You, of course, were pushing yourself too hard as always and Todoroki saw it. Without even realizing it, the boy slowed his pace a bit.
Eventually, you finished your final lap ahead of a majority of the rest of the class, besides Ashido, Bakugou, and Iida. You were exhausted to the point of hyperventilating.
Ahh geez... I should have really eaten lunch today...
"(Y/n) are you alright? You don't look too well." Todoroki looked over.
"Yeah..." You huffed, attempting to stand up tall. "I'm fine-" Not a second later you toppled over and face planted in the dirt.

"Ughhhh... What happened..." You grumbled, finally coming to your senses.
"(Y/n)! Thank god!" Ochaco cried out. She, Midoriya, and Todoroki were hovering above you. "You passed out on the track. We've been worried about you."
"Is that so. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to cause so much trouble." You sighed, sitting up on the infirmary bed. "I'm really fine though, so you guys can get back to class!" Ochaco and Izuku sighed at each other and got up from their seats.
"Call us if you need anything (y/n)!" Izuku called over cheerfully with a thumbs up. You nodded in response as they left.
"Aren't you heading back too Todoroki?" You questioned towards the boy sweetly. He didn't answer right away, glaring at you with an icy stare instead. "Uhhh did I do something to upset you?"
"You didn't eat lunch today did you?" He scoffed, crossing his arms. "Or any other day of this week now that I think about it."
"Oh yeah, that..." Truth be told, you had some pipes that had to be replaced in your apartment so you could have running water. Of course, those things costed money. But you didn't want the people you cared about to worry about you. "It's just some fad "no lunch" diet thing I'm trying this week, nothing else!"
"You're lying," Todoroki claimed. "Because when we had lunch together for the first time and you bought my meal, you also didn't eat lunch that day. Any other day and you scarf down your food like a rabid animal."
A-Animal?! I mean he's not wrong...
You looked away from him and sighed a bit. Todoroki was both smart and perceptive. You should have known better than to try and fool him.
"Yeah... You're right, I was lying." You replied quietly. "Truth be told I don't have a lot of extra money to throw around for food, and today was kinda a strenuous week in terms of funds..."
"Honestly... You're dumb (y/n). Of all things to save money on, it shouldn't be food."
"I know. You're right Todoroki." You chuckled, raising your hand to rub the lump on your forehead. The boy's eyes followed.
"Does your head hurt?"
"Oh yeah, it's just a lump tho-" He moved your hand, replacing it with his own. A gentle cooling sensation quickly flooded the area.
"I'll be your ice pack so you don't have to buy one." He said causally. You peered at him and smiled brightly, taking comfort in his presence, relishing in the fact that he cared.
Maybe we are friends.
