[Chapter 3]: He was smiling

Dear mom,

My first day at UA was absolutely insane! You wouldn't believe all the amazing quirks the other students have here! Sometimes I feel like I fall a little short of them... But despite that, I'm gonna keep working hard to become a hero! I love you and miss you tons. Mail me back when you can!

-(Y/n)

"There we go!" You grinned, licking the envelope and pressing it closed with your fingers. "Kuro, you're gonna have to get off me so I can bring this to the mailbox." You chuckled, trying your best to pull the small kitten from your lap. He meowed in protest, gripping your pants with his claws as you attempted to remove him.

When you finally managed to fend off Kuro's adorable begging face, you jumped up from your place on the floor and slipped on your shoes. After unlocking your apartment door, you took off down the stairs and to the mailbox.

"A little late for you to come outside." A voice called over from the apartment complex. "Sending another letter to your mom?" When you turned, your eyes fell upon your neighbor and close friend.

"Evening Grandpa Satou!" You gleefully responded. "I am! What are you doing out here so late?"

"I'm an adult, I can do what I want." The old man retorted with crossed arms. "You, on the other hand, are a young lady. You do remember the neighborhood you live in right?"

"I know, I know. I'm coming back now!"

"Honestly... Kyoko didn't go to work in America so that you could get kidnapped while she was away..." Satou huffed.

-A Week Later-

"Good morning Tsu!" You giggled upon entering class 1-A. "What'd you get for #7 on the homework last night? It was so hard, it took me forever and I still didn't get an answer that makes sense." You groaned dramatically.

"#7 was tough, I had to ask Momo for help with it last night." Tsuyu responded.

"IS SHE HERE YET? I really wanna get full points on this assignment if possible..."

"I don't think so, but I'm sure you could ask Bakugou or Todoroki for help though." She said, pointing over at the two minding their own business in their respective seats.

Your eyes fell on the blond who had chased you around the hall last week.

Does his face always look like that?! He must have some kind chronic anger condition...

You shifted your gaze to Todoroki. He seemed to be in some kind of a daze, expression heavy and solemn. It wasn't a good look.

"Good morning Todoroki!" You called over brightly, approaching his desk. He snapped up a bit and glanced over at you.

"Good morning..." His response was quiet but attentive nonetheless. "Did you need something?"

"Wha-? No no not at all! Just wanted to say good morning!" You smiled warmly at him.

"I heard you and Asui talking about #7 from the homework. You're not exactly quiet." Todoroki plainly retorted."Did you need help with it?"

"Well yeah... But it doesn't matter anymore really."

"Why's that?"

"Well... it's just you..." You took a deep breath before finishing. "You seemed really sad Todoroki..." His eyes widened slightly at your words, but he quickly turned away.

"Did you want help or not?"

"If you're offering, absolutely!" You chuckled, scratching the back of your head. "Although I kinda feel bad since you keep doing favors for me and I haven't been able to pay you back."

"It's fine, don't worry about it..." He responded, pulling his homework out of his bag.

-Lunch Time-

"I thought I told you not to worry about it." Todoroki complained as you forcibly paid for his meal.

"Sorry sorry, I just don't like being in debt is all." You grinned. "You wanna sit next to me? Or do you have other friends to sit by?"

"... I have other friends to sit by."

"That was a trick question Todoroki. I know you sit on the roof alone during lunch."

"... You're very blunt aren't you."

"Yup! Got it from my mom!" You replied excitedly with your arms stretched out above your head. "So do you like the roof?"

"I guess..."

You stood there for a moment before your brows furrowed. Todoroki was a little hard to read sometimes, but you felt as though you may have been annoying him.

"Am I bothering you?" Your question came out softly yet still surprised Todoroki. He paused briefly and looked at you with questioning eyes."Because you can just tell me if I am. I mean I can't read your mind." He sighed and turned towards the cafeteria exit.

"Not really."

"Great! Mind if I come sit with you today then?"

"Do what you want." He stoically huffed as he headed out of the lunchroom. You skipped along after him happily.

"(Y/n)?"

"Hmmm?" You glanced over at Todoroki.

"Are you not gonna eat lunch today?" He asked.

"Yep! I'm just not really that hungry!" You grinned before averting your gaze back towards the sky.

The breeze was light and warm, filling you with a sense of ease. You closed your eyes and leaned your head back against the cement wall you and Todoroki were sitting in front of.

"So this is why you like to eat up here huh?" You breathed, lips curling up slightly. Todoroki glanced over at you. He couldn't help but feel perplexed by your soft expression.

"Why are you smiling like that?" He questioned out of the blue.

"Like what?"

"I mean is there a reason you're smiling?"

"Hmmm... A lot of reasons I guess. I made amazing miso last night, I got full credit on my homework, the air is warm, I have good company."

"That's it?"

"Huh? What do you mean 'that's it'?" You chuckled lightly at him. "Didn't know you were the smile police Todoroki."

"What? I'm not a police officer." He nonchalantly retorted.

Did he just?

"PFFFFFTTTTT HAHAHAHAHA!" You burst out, gripping your stomach as your body jerked from your own laughter. "YOU'RE HILARIOUS TODOROKI HAHAHAHAA. I DIDN'T MEAN IT LITERALLY YA BIG DORK." He could only respond with his adorable confused expression.

You both sat there for a while longer as Todoroki ate and you enjoyed the warm air. It was a simple thing; effortless almost. You two didn't even talk much. But despite how trivial just sitting there next to him seemed, Todoroki felt some of the tension leave his body.

When the lunch period ended, you both walked back to class 1-A silently. But something was different. Upon sneaking a peek at the typically stoic boy, you noticed the corners of his lips curled up gently.

He was smiling.
