[Chapter 13]: How I am

"All... Might..." You muttered in disbelief upon seeing the sight splayed out before you.

The number one hero was trapped, his body held firmly still by the monstrous Nomu that had emerged earlier. Todoroki came up next to you. His eyes quickly widened as well.

"What the hell..." He gasped. "You've got to be kidding me right now..."

"We have to go to him! He needs our help-"

"No, I will go to him." Todoroki shrewdly cut you off before glancing towards you. "You go back to Thirteen and the others."

"What?! He needs all the help he can get. You can't honestly ask me to-"

"(Y/n)." Once again your words were halted. Todoroki turned to face you. His expression was the same as usual for the most part, although his eyes were a bit soft. "Listen to me. Your quirk is extremely effective in certain situations. However this is not one of those situations. This foe is too powerful." His voice dropped down even lower. "Please, just listen to me and go meet up with Thirteen."

Part of you knew he was right. Against an enemy like that, there really wasn't anything you could do with how you were now. You swallowed your pride and gave into reason.

"Okay, I understand." You huffed. "Just... Please be careful."

There was a glint of worry in your eyes, and he could tell. You understood he was strong, maybe even stronger than Bakugou.

But he was your best friend. You just cared about him a lot.

Maybe even too much.

In that moment you wanted to say more. However, time was of the essence.

Todoroki was gone, heading towards the action like the hero he was. You wanted to be like that too. You wanted to be a hero.

"You just wait..." You whispered quietly, fist clenching to the point where your fingernails dug into your palms. "I'm gonna get stronger..."

You headed in the opposite direction.

A million thoughts raced through your head at once.

Is All Might going to be okay?

Can Todoroki really help somehow? Will he be okay?

Why am I not strong enough?

"THERE ONE IS!" A voice shrewdly called out from behind you. It sent a chill racing through your body, instantly putting you into fight or flight mode.

Fight or flight, what was the right choice?

Naturally, one's body screams flight. One, two, no... There were three of them, three grown, male, villains against one high school girl.

Run.

"HEH, YOU'RE NOT GONNA GET FAR!" One of the villains snarled, gaining on you.

Run.

Over the years, you had learned how to use your quirk finely within your own body. You could adapt. It was almost instinct to cut off pain receptors when faced with a task of extreme exertion, or stop the flow of stress hormones while being emotionally taxed. In all honesty, you couldn't remember how and when you learned how to do it.

Fight.

The feelings were gone, dissipated out of seemingly nowhere.

Taking a sharp left, you headed into a small grouping of trees, disappearing among the brush quickly.

"NOT SO FAST!" The group followed after you. "Split up and search for her!" They nodded and separated. You remained silent behind a tree, carefully calculating your next move.

Truth be told you didn't enjoy being like this; unfeeling, unaware of the terror you were suppose to be feeling. But as you were now the mechanism was necessary to act. And then after you came out of the delusional state, you couldn't help but feel pathetic.

My best bet is to touch them, there's not much I can do to stop them externally.

One of the villains appeared a few feet away from you.

Honestly, they were idiots to have separated...

You slipped out quickly, closing the distance between him.

"HEY-" Before he had a chance to lash out, your hands were around his neck.

"Sleep." You calmly commanded, halting the blood flow within his jugular for simply a few seconds. The strength fled from his body as he slipped out of consciousness. He fell before you, smacking the ground with an audible thud.

Then once again, nothing.

"THERE YOU ARE!" Another man appeared from the brush, his arm swinging forward. Shards of bone sprayed out towards you. Perhaps he intended for you to dodge or run, but why would you do such a thing when you could feel nothing?

You launched forward despite the shards digging into your skin.

He was shocked for a moment, but recovered quickly. He swung at you, missing your head by only a hair as you ducked beneath it. You gripped his arm and pressed your free hand into his chest, forcing him onto the ground.

"LET GO-" He trashed in your grip, beginning to panic as we suddenly realized he wasn't able to inhale.

"Do you know how oxygen exchange works in your body?" You calmly explained. "The alveoli within you lungs are surrounded by capillaries. There, oxygen is absorbed into the blood." He gasped for air, unable to feel the relief he craved. "Guess what happens when you prevent that exchange from happening? Can you guess?" No answer. You peered down emptily towards him. "Oh, he passed out."

You released the man, leaving him still against the earth. Blood dribbled down your chest and arms where the shards had punctured your suit. It wasn't anything severe.

"M-Monster..."

You turned towards the faint whimper, eyes falling upon the remaining villain. Your eyes locked with his. He was the one afraid now.

And so he ran.

You didn't care enough to follow him, he wouldn't escape from the facility anyways.

I guess I won.

Your quirks hold on your body released. Pain and remorse flooded in. You huffed and pulled the shards from your skin, wincing at the sting. But what hurt worst of all was the fact that you had become so unmerciful.

How can I become a kind and compassionate hero if I have to rely on being emotionless to win?

The thought made your throat tighten and the ground seemingly tremble.

Oh wait, it was trembling.

Massive blasts and vibrations radiated out from the center of the facility suddenly.

"What on earth?!" You cried out before a giant gust of wind blasted past you, knocking you onto your knees. "That must be All Might..."

Todoroki, please be okay.

Your mind once again shifted to your close friend. The thought of his smile brought you comfort, and the thought of him getting hurt made your stomach twist. It was a feeling that brought you back to reality.

"I gotta move..." You whispered, gripping the ground as to not tumble over from the impacts. You pulled yourself to your feel and slowly began making your way to the main gate.

I have to stay back.

Because with how I am now, this is the most I can do.
