Chapter 3
*5 year's later*
Skylor's POV
"Rotate," Mother commands, and all four of us shift which station we are at. Standing in front of each of us, there are four robots. Each robot mimics an elemental master we're going to face. Mother holds the remotes that control them in her hands.
In front of me, I have the fire robot. Using Seliel's powers, I smoke over to Nya before touching the skin on her hand in order to copy her powers. A wave of power flows through me. It's smooth. Quickly, I go back to my station.
"Begin," Mother instructs, and I do so. A fire ball comes hurling towards me, and I dodge out of the way before spraying the robot. The robot throws another one, followed by another one, then another one. They pick up speed, but I hit them with water, turning them into steam.
"Ouch!" Nya squeals. My head immediately moves to look at her. She is holding her arm, and the lightning robot is continuously zapping her, making her squirm. She tries to spray the robot, but it does nothing to deter it.
Within seconds of looking at Nya, a warmth hits my hand. It immediately becomes way too hot, and my hand starts to burn. A sharpness floods through me. I yelp in pain before sending a powerful jet of water towards the robot. It falls over, but the pain in my hand stays. The tears prickle in my eyes, but I hold them back so Mother won't be mad at me.
"Avoid fire. All it causes is pain," she says calmly, her hands folded in front of her. She sees me holding back tears and rolls her eyes. "It's just a burn. Keep training. Rotate everyone!"
I move onto the ice robot, but all I can focus on is the overwhelming pain. My vision gets foggy from the tears, and my lip starts to quiver. I look down and my hand is bright red, some blisters starting to form.
Soon, I can't be tough anymore. With fear, I start crying, waiting for Mother to get mad. "Are you seriously crying?" She stops my robot, walking towards me. She stops in front of me, looking down at me with her jaw tight.
"It h-hurts," I cry, looking down at my hand.
She rolls her eyes, letting out a sound of disappointment. "A little burn hurts you? You're weak."
"I should go clean it up," Auntie suggests, stepping forward to deal with me. She turned off all of my sisters' robots, so now they're all looking at me.
"No, let me. Girls, your training is temporarily dismissed," she grabs the collar of my shirt, lifting me into the air. I don't struggle. Mother drags me into our common room and sits me down on the couch.
"I'm s-sorry, Mother," I try to hold back the rest of my tears, but my hand feels as if it's about to fall off. She walks away, ignoring me, before coming back with some cream and a bucket of water.
"This is your punishment for losing focus. In battle, you won't be lucky enough to get away with a mere burn. Fire masters are arrogant, and inflicting pain on their enemies makes them look stronger," she informs me. I nod.
"Yes Mother."
"Now, let me see your hand," she demands. I stick out my burnt hand. She takes it. Once her hand touches my skin, I fell power rush through me, but it's unlike when I copy any of my sisters' powers. This runs deeper, and it makes me feel disgusting inside. It makes me feel sick to my stomach. A dull pain fills my entire body, and it's overwhelming. I pull away from her, and the power continues to amplify.
Suddenly, I feel a sharp pain on my cheek. Mother glares at me, anger clear on her face. Her hand is still in the air from slapping me. "How dare you you steal my powers!"
"I'm sorry," I apologize as the power feels like it's growing stronger. It's overwhelming, feeling like it's going to consume me.
Suddenly, all the darkness goes away, but it's replaced by even more pain on my wrist where the burn partially went up to. I look at it, and there's now a vengestone cuff on my wrist, pressing against the burn.
"Go to your room. No dinner for you tonight," Mother points down the hallway in the monastery we live in.
"B-but my burn," I whimper, wincing as my skin presses up against the cuff.
"You should've thought about that before you tried to copy my powers," she crosses her arms.
"I can't help it. It just happens," I try to explain, but I stop when she glares at me.
"Is that an excuse I hear?"
"No Mother," I sigh. I stand up, wiping the tears away with my not burnt hand, and walk down the hall into my room. I close the door quietly, so I won't be accused of slamming it, before lying down on my bed and crying.

*the next day*
I walk out to the courtyard as soon as the sun rises. After being trapped in my room since 3 yesterday with nothing to do, I need to get out. I walk out to the center, sitting down, taking a deep breath in, and closing my eyes. I wince when the cuff rubs against the burn, which still hurts like crazy.
My eyes fly open when I hear shuffling to my right. My head quickly turns in that direction, and I see Nya standing in front of the fire robot. Her eyes are focused on it, and she reaches out to hold its hand.
"Nya? Is everything alright?" I ask her. She jumps slightly, obviously startled by me.
"Yes?" she gazes at the robot in front of her before daintily responding,"No."
"What's wrong little sis?" I walk towards her, sitting down once I'm close.
"I'm evil," she sighs.
"No you aren't. Why would you ever say that?" I ask her softly, grabbing onto her hand with my good one.
"I like the fire," she looks down as she says that.
"What?"
"It makes me feel safe. It's warmth makes me feel at home. I like looking at it," she sighs. "Fire is evil, so I'm evil since I like it."
"That's not true, Nya," I shake my head. "You're the opposite of evil. You're so smart for your age, and you're super nice. You would never hurt anyone unless they were evil."
"But the fire."
"We all have our weird little things, but that's what makes us special," I tell her. She looks down at my hand that's covered in blisters from the burn. I've been trying hard not to move it, so the blisters won't pop. The blisters that were under the cuff already popped, making it hurt even more when the cuff rubs against it.
"Didn't Mother say she was going to fix it?" she points to my hand.
"She said she wouldn't once I accidentally absorbed some of her powers," I look down at the ground.
"That's mean. You didn't mean to," Nya sits down next to me, still looking at my hand.
"Girls, what are you going?" both of our heads dart up when we hear Auntie's voice. "You know you're not supposed to be near the robots when you're not training," she puts her hand on her hips. Both of us are frozen. Neither of us want to say why we're actually over here.
"Nya was curious by how it worked. I tried to explain it to her, but I couldn't figure it out," I lie. Auntie looks skeptical for a few seconds before her face lightens up.
"You like machines? I do too. You can help me with some later, and I'll show you how they work," she offers. Nya nods, playing along with my lie.
"Yay!" Nya cheers.
"How's your burn doing, Skylor?" Auntie asks. I lift up my hand, wincing when the cuff shifts. When she sees it, her eyes widen. "Why would she put one of those on the wrist with the burn?" She grabs my arm above the burn. She takes a key out of her pocket, sticking it in the hole of the cuff and twisting it. The cuff pops off, pulling some skin off with it since it got put on when my skin was still hot. I let out a yelp.
"It hurts."
"I'm sorry sweetie. Let's get this cleaned up."

Kai's POV
"The key to being a good blacksmith is patience," my dad tells me, holding a sword in a bucket of water. He decided to give me a demonstration after I made a completely curved sword.
"But what if there's a better way, a quicker way?" I wonder, watching him work. "Then, we could make more money."
"This is the best way. I believed, just like you do, that I could enhance it to make it better, but metal work is an art. It takes focus and precision," he sets the sword down.
"Was mom good at being a blacksmith?" I ask. My dad gets a little smile on his face.
"She was amazing. I taught her once we got together, and she actually helped me become a better blacksmith. She helped me with the patience I hadn't learnt yet, and I saw how much better everything turned out. She made my work so much better," he sighs, looking at a framed picture of the two of them on the wall.
"What was the coolest weapon you guys ever made?" I ask him. My dad thinks deeply for several seconds before speaking up.
"I'm not sure. We made a lot of cool weapons. I have a collection of some of my favorites. I'll show you the next Mom and Nya Day," he tells me before going back to make the blade for an axe.
"Dad, what actually happened to Nya?" I ask, confused.
"She got lost. We're trying to find her," he tells me the same answer as always.
"I'm not dumb, Dad. A newborn baby doesn't just get lost on the same day mom died," I place my hands on my hips.
When I realized that my mom had actually died, I was heartbroken. I didn't understand it when I was as young, but now I do. When I brought it up to my dad, he was shocked that I put it together. Now, I've finally realized that Nya didn't 'get lost' because there's no way she could. I just had to find a good time to bring it up with my dad.
"I don't want to burden you with unnecessary heartache. I'm doing you a favor. I'll explain it to you when you get older. Then, we can work on finding her together," he tells me softly, a sad smile on his face.
"I want to help her. She's my sister, dad," I tell him, crossing my arms.
"She's my daughter, but I don't know how to get to her. I'm trying to find a way. While I can't though, I'm going to enjoy life with my son," he looks for the positive, going back to working on the axe blade.
"I love you, Dad."
"I love you too, Kai."
