Chapter 20
A/N Double update warning! If you haven't read the previous chapter, please do so
Nya's POV
Jay and I are led to a dark room. Walls of boxes and files line the walls, along with some bookshelves in the middle with them. The commissioner walks inside. He walks down the third isle, grabbing a box and taking it out.
"I'll bring you two to a room with a tv in case you two want to watch those clips. Just be careful, okay? Make sure you actually want to see it. You can't unsee those type of things," the commissioner warns us, going to hand the box to Jay before realizing Jay is in a sling.
"I can hold it," I tell him. Skeptically, he hands over the box. He then walks us two doors down and into a generic room. The walls are a dull grey. In the center of the room, there's a table with a chair on each side. In the corner, there is a tv on a cart.
"I'll come back to check on you two in a little bit," he tells us before closing the door behind him, leaving the two of us alone. I walk over to the table, setting the box down. I pull one of the chairs to the same side as the other while Jay wheels the tv over. Once everything is set up, he takes a seat next to me.
"From what the commissioner said, what's in this box sounds really bad, so if you ever want to stop..." Jay starts, his own voice slightly shaking.
"I'll tell you. Same goes for you," I give him a small smile before opening the box. Inside the box, there are several labeled files. "Which files should I pull out?"
"Maya and Ray Smith," he tells me. When I don't hear his mom's name, I turn to look at him.
"You don't want your mom's?" I ask, remembering when he told me that my aunt killed his mom. He shakes his head.
"I...I can't. My dad, my biological one, has told me so many good stories about her. I can't corrupt my thoughts of her like that," he explains, his voice quiet. I nod understandingly, pulling out the files he said.
"So these people are my mom and...dad? What's a dad?" I ask, looking at their names messily scribbled on the front of the files.
"It's like a mom, but a boy," he answers vaguely. I nod.
With shaky hands, I open the file with my mom's name on it. Inside, there's several papers, pictures of the scene, and a video. Quickly browsing through the papers, there is no evidence that it was my aunt that did it, just references back to seeing her in the video.
"Jay, put in the video, please," I ask. He looks at me, unsure.
"You're sure you want this?" he double checks. "I mean, it says right here in this paper that her daughter Nya was stolen and..."
"I need to see it. These could be fake, but the video won't lie," I explain my reasoning.
"Alright, just...please tell me if you want me to stop it," he tells me softly, looking into my eyes.
I give him a kind but small smile,"of course."
He sticks the video tape in, and clicks some buttons on the tv so it turns on. He fast forwards through some things until he reaches a little boy walking into the room.
"That's my mom? I...I look so much like her," I say in shock. When I continue to watch the video, my heart drops.

Jay's POV
"That's my mom? I...I look so much like her," Nya says, shock and sadness in her voice. Her eyes are already glued to the screen.
"Kai. Your sister is here," the man, Kai and Nya's dad, tells the small Kai. His little eyes widen, and a huge smile appears on his face before he wobbly runs over to the bedside, facing his back to the camera.
"Nya?" he asks, standing on his tip toes. Maya turns the small Nya, so Kai can see her. "She little." At the sound of her name, the current Nya slightly gasps.
"She is little," their dad agrees. "She's going to grow up to be big and strong, just like you."
"I hold her?" Kai sticks out his small arms.
"What's the magic word?" their mom asks him, adjusting Nya in her arms.
"Pleeeeaaaaase," he draws it out. She places Nya in Kai's arms, but is still mostly holding onto her. When I turn to look at the Nya sitting next to me, her eyes are glued to the screen, and she's clenching and unclenching her fists.
"Can you give her a kiss?" their dad asks. Kai nods before giving her a big kiss on her forehead. "Look at what a good brother you are."
"Kai honey, can you do something for Mommy?" their mom asks him. He happily nods. "Can you go out to the forge with Daddy and grab the box of toys we got for Nya?"
"Course Mommy," he nods again. "We take Nya?"
"No, Nya is tired. She can rest here," their mom takes Nya back in her arms and close to her chest.
"Let's go Daddy," Kai grabs their dad's hand.
"Wait Kai. Can you give Mommy a kiss?"
"Course Mommy," she leans over, and Kai gives her a small kiss.
"I love you, Kai."
"Love you Mommy," he starts to walk out of the room.
"I'll be back quickly, Nya," their dad gives Nya a kiss on her forehead. "Which box is it?"
"It's the one with little waves on it."
"Alright. We'll be back soon."
"Thank you. I love you, Ray."
"I love you too, Maya," he gives his wife a kiss before jogging out of the room.
"We were supposed to be so happy," I hear Nya murmur from next to me. Turning my head to look at her, I see the sadness on her face. Her eyes are watery, looking like she's about to cry. It's clear she's holding it back. "Me, Kai, our parents, we were supposed to be happy."
I reach out, grabbing Nya's hand comfortingly. She smiles lightly at me before turning back to the screen.
A significant amount of time passes before their mom speaks again, "Boys? Kai? Ray?"
"I was waiting until you noticed," Ciara walks out from the other room, a smirk on her face. "I'm offended. How could you not tell your aunt that you're going to have a child?"
"You're not my aunt. Go away," their mom glares, but she's obviously fatigued.
"Don't even pretend you could face me right now. You're too weak," Ciara takes another step closer.
"You don't have powers anyways," their mom says. Ciara shrugs.
"Neither do you right now," she counters. Their mom looks down at her hands. "Don't even try. I've already seen five failed attempts."
"Five?"
"You didn't think you were special, did you?" she laughs cruelty to herself, walking closer. "First, I visited Lilly. It was a shame; she gave birth to a boy. You know your mother and I love the girls. Next, I went and saw Amber. She really married down. He's rich, but he sure is a lunatic. Anyways, she had a beautiful baby girl. Her name is Skylor. She's so driven, just like her mother. Your mother and I love her." At the mention of Skylor, Nya lightly gasps, her eyes getting even more watery.
"H-how has Mara seen her?" their mom, Maya, asks, pulling Nya closer to her.
"Shhh, don't interrupt. I thought I taught you better. Anyways, next was Sarah. Like Amber, she gave birth to a fierce little girl whose name is Seliel. She absolutely loves us. After that, I gave Libber a visit. She also had a boy, which was rather maddening. I also stopped to give the master of form a visit. I heard rumors that his wife had a daughter, and I couldn't miss the chance to see another elemental child. Now, it's your turn for a visit." At the mention of two more of her teammates, Nya tightens her grip on my hand.
"Get away from me," Maya warns.
"Funny, that's what all of your sisters told me too. It's a shame that they couldn't be here right now," Ciara moves to sit in a chair.
"Ciara, what did you do to them?"
"Using my name now. Maya, I thought we were past this," Ciara places a hand over own heart.
"Answer my question. What did you do to my team?"
"What's your daughter's name?" she ignores the question.
"Nya."
"What a beautiful name. Let me hold her," Ciara stands up. Maya tries to keep her hold on Nya, but she's tired, quickly getting her daughter stolen from her. "Oh, she's so precious." The Nya next to me now is glaring at the screen, her grip feeling like it's about to break my hand, with teary eyes.
"Give her back," Maya reaches out for her, but Ciara pulls her back. "What did you do to Kai and Ray?"
"Let's just say they might be trapped in a burning forge," she shrugs.
"You trapped a two year old in a burning building!" Maya attempts to get up, but is too tired.
"Relax. He's undoubtedly a master of fire, meaning he's invincible to fire," she rocks Nya in her arms.
"And if he's not?"
"Oh well. I won't lose any sleep over it," Ciara smirks. "Why are you doing this?"
"Easy. My sister has been trapped for over one hundred years. We were mere moments from allowing her into this world, but you had to go and mess it up, and for what? Love? Anyways, my sister and I made a mistake when recruiting you guys to help us. We took you guys in when you were too old. You had attachments to this world. Now these little girls," Ciara boops Nya's nose,"will know nothing of it."
"You took their babies." Maya realizes with a quivering voice.
"Not all of them. Mara has no intent of raising little boys."
"What did you do with the boys?"
"Well, you know as well as I do that cutting off an elemental bloodline completely creates an imbalance of grand proportions, so I of course couldn't kill them. I was simply going to relocate them into households where they would be neglected and hopefully turn to the darkness.
However, I underestimated Lou. Lilly was my first stop, and he was able to temporarily stun me, so he took his son and disappeared. He warned Libber and as soon as her son was born, Cliff relocated him to a different family. I was too lazy to find either of them," Ciara explains, and I feel my breath leave my lungs. My dad never explained to me why he gave me to my other mom and dad, but it all makes sense now. He was doing it to protect me from that monster. Tears prickle in my eyes. "I also came for something else besides your daughter though."
"What?"
Slowly, she pulls a knife out of her belt "Revenge. It's your fault that Mara isn't out. You and your sisters failed us. Hopefully your daughters won't."
"You don't have to do this," Maya pleads.
"Oh I do," she holds Nya in her left arm, using her right hand to hover the knife over Maya's chest. I turn my head away, so I'm not looking when it happens. "Oh and by the way, I know why your sisters never responded to you. It's because I killed them." I hear a scream from the television, and Nya's squeezes my hand tighter, color draining from her face. "Bye Maya. I really hope Nya doesn't fail us like you did."
Nya reaches out to turn off the tv, still keeping her other hand in mine. She fights to hold the tears back. "She's a monster. We were so happy, if only even for a little bit. She...she ruined it. I hate her." Nya turns her whole body, so it's facing me. I can tell she's using all of her energy, maybe even her elemental powers, to keep her tears from coming out.
"I'm so, so sorry that all of that happened to you," I tell her softly, intertwining our fingers. Seeing her struggle, I speak up, "You can cry, Nya. I'm not going to judge you."
"Crying shows weakness. True warriors don't cry," she says some conditioned response, sniffling.
"That's not true. Crying shows that you're strong enough to accept your emotions," I tell her. I wrap my one good arm around her. When she wraps her arms around me, she starts sobbing. My heart aches, but all I can do is comfort her.
"She's evil! She killed my mom, and your mom, and Skylor's mom, and Seliel's mom, and...!" she starts to rant before bursting back into more tears. "My entire life was a lie! I endured so much pain from the woman who claimed to be my mother! She yelled at us, belittled us, gave us nothing!"
"I can't imagine what at was like, but don't worry, we're going to make sure you never go back to her again," I say quietly, rubbing circles on her back. We stay like that for at least ten minutes, her sobbing into my chest. Eventually, she looks up at me. I wipe a stray tear away.
"I want both of them to suffer. Mothe...Mara should have to rot in that realm, alone, forever," she tells me.
"I have an idea on how we can accomplish that, or at least delay her arrival," I let her know. She sniffles, looking hopefully at me.
"What is it?" she asks.
"Well, I need you to take me captive again..." I start, and Nya already looks hesitant.
"Ciara isn't going to enjoy that. I don't want her to hurt you again," she tells me, the end making my heart slightly fuzzy.
"You need to sneak me in. Tell the other girls that you thought it was a good idea since the only gemstone left is that of my element. Then, you sneak me one or two gemstones before I 'escape'. Then, the guys and I are going to split up and travel to different realms. She won't know which realm has the gemstones in them, and we'll be able to last the duration of the alignment. That will give us 30 years to trap Ciara until the next alignment," I explain the plan to her. She seems to think about it.
"Are the other guys already in on this?" Nya asks me. I nod.
"I brought it up to them at our little meeting. I was decently sure I could convince you that Ciara is evil."
"Jay?"
"Yeah?"
"I'm in."

Kai's POV
When I get the confirmation text from Jay, I feel a lightness flood over me. Even though I'm still furious about the deal, it's reassuring that my little sister is officially on our side now. She understands how evil Ciara is.
At first, I felt like I should have been the one to try to convince Nya that Ciara is evil. I am her brother, her only living relative, and I still haven't talked to her. However, she doesn't trust me yet. She trusts Jay, for some reason, so I realized that he would be the best one for the job.
I see Skylor leaning against the wall, a glass of sparkling water in her hand. She frowns at it, swirling it in circles. Seeing her simultaneously causes a wave of rage to reappear and causes my heart to beat rapidly. When she sees me walking up to her, she lowers her glass.
"I was thinking you'd never come back," she tells me, her voice monotone.
"Well, it took a while cause some of us actually make decisions with input from the rest our our team," I snap, letting the anger come forward.
"Kai...," she starts.
"We're taking you up on your offer, but next time, it'll be nowhere near as easy," I inform her, paining me, but it's the only way to keep people safe. "Enjoy your Obsidian of Earth."
With that, I walk off, leaving a stunned Skylor behind me yet again.
A/N yaaaay, Nya switched sides! It's been obvious for a while that it'd be her, but it's still exciting nonetheless
I got out another double update. I didn't realize it was this long but oh well. I'm just on the writing grind. To be honest this book needed more chapters anyways
Thoughts on the chapter(s)?
Well, I'm up later than I should be but I hope you guys enjoyed these chapters!
