Chapter 19
A/N Did I heart part one of another double update?
Nya's POV
Jay and I stand on the roof of the museum. From here, we can see a large group of people standing by the entrance of the museum, cameras in their hands. I turn back to Jay, and he's looking at the distance between buildings.
"We're jumping from roof to roof?" I ask, walking to stand beside him.
"I thought we could, but the gap is too big... Wait, I just thought of something."
"What is it?" I ask, curious.
"Okay, so if this were to not work, would you be able to catch yourself?" he asks, concerning me.
"Jay..."
"Would you?"
"Probably," I answer, still unsure of what we're doing.
"Great. Can you...um...hop on my back?" he asks. I raise an eyebrow at him.
"Jay, your arm is pretty screwed up. I don't know if this is a smart idea," I admit, looking between him and the potential fall.
"We can practice on the roof first to make sure I can clear it. It'll be fun," he reassures me, a playful look on his face. I sigh, caving in.
"You're positive this is fine for your arm?" I double check, moving so I'm behind him.
"Well, it might hurt a bit, but nothing too bad," he answers honestly, squatting down so I can get on. Knowing he won't give up, I climb onto his back, wrapping my legs around his torso and wrapping my arms around him so I'm holding onto his chest. The closeness makes my chest tight.
When he starts to run forward for his trial run, I make sure to keep my eyes open. Once we reach a crack at the top of the roof, Jay jumps. In the air, we start spinning really fast, caught inside what looks like a tornado of lightning, before landing. I immediately get down, dizzy.
"What was that?" I ask. I hold my head, trying to steady myself.
"Spinjitzu," he says as if it's obvious, not fazed by the spinning at all. "I think that worked well enough. Come on, let's go again, this time for real."
"How are you not dizzy?" I ask, feeling like I'm about to throw up.
"I'm used to it, I guess," he says, shrugging with only one shoulder. "We'll only use this way to get down this street. Once we're far enough away from the paparazzi, we can walk the rest of the way."
I hesitate, considering I still feel sick, but seeing the look on his face causes me to give in. "Alright, but we should do it quick, so it's over quicker."
---
"Even though I've spent nearly a week here, I still feel like I've barely seen Ninjago. Auntie has kept us stuck in our ship the entire time," I admit as Jay and I walk down the street. After we got far enough away, we got down to the street and started walking. Now, we leisurely walk over to the "police station", whatever that is. The streets are empty, but Jay said that it's most likely because of the party.
"Ninjago has so many cool places. There's the spirit coves that the dragons migrate to, there's the Lost City of Ouroboros which is now a tourist attraction, oh, and there's also Mega Monster Amusement Park!" he says the last part extra excitedly.
"What's an amusement park?"
"It's a place with little mechanical rides that you can go on. I'll pull up a picture," as we walk, he takes a little rectangular device out of his pocket. After he clicks a button, it lights up, revealing a picture of him and the rest of the ninja. He presses something, revealing a screen of numbers. He clicks six different numbers, and the device switches to yet another screen.
"What's that?" I ask, gesturing to the device in his hand.
"It's a BorgPhone. It's a device where you can talk to people from far away, or play games, or search for information, or take pictures," he informs me.
"There's a camera in there?" I ask, my eyes wide. Jay smiles.
"Yeah, it's here," he points to a small circle on the back of it, "and here."
"There's no way the camera is high quality," I say, disbelievingly.
"Oh, but it is," he tells me. He presses a little square in the top right corner. Suddenly, our faces pop up on the screen in high quality. My eyes widen, and the me on the screen's eyes widen too.
"So it's like a little mirror?" I clarify, amused.
"Yes, but also no. Watch," he smiles at the screen before pressing a button. The screen flashes. Right after, he presses a little box. Suddenly, a still picture of us from when he pressed the button is on the screen.
"How long does that last?" I ask.
"However long I want it to. If I wanted to get rid of it, I'd press that little trash can. Since I want to favorite it, I'm going to press the little heart," he explains, pressing the small heart on the bottom of the screen. It turns from a silhouette to a pink, filled in heart.
"Do you have any photos of the amusement park?" I ask. He shakes his head.
"Nope, however, I can exit here," he leaves the picture of us, "and click here," he presses another square, and a white screen with a little bar up top appears. "This is a search bar. You type something in, and it will bring up articles, images, and videos about it." He presses the bar, and a ton of letters pop up. Quickly, he types something in and presses a button. Suddenly, the page is filled.
"Does the BorgPhone have everything stored in it?" I ask. With a smile on his face, he shakes his head.
"I wish. It's connected to something called the internet that has all of the information," he answers.
When I see a little red mark at the top of his screen, I tilt my head,"What's that?"
"Shoot. That's my battery. It's almost dead," he tells me. Closing his eyes, he zaps his phone for several seconds. The little red mark grows until it's no longer red, now black, and is now significantly larger. When he opens his eyes, he sighs. "Thank gosh I didn't fry it again. You don't know how many phones I've destroyed trying to do that. It always sounds like a good idea, but if I lose focus, I send too much in at once and it short circuits. Then, bam, no more phone."
"Is it powered by your elemental powers specifically, or regular electricity?" I ask, curious.
"Regular electricity. I'm just a portable charger for everything, which isn't a bad thing until I overdo it, which is usually the case," he admits as he clicks a little button on his BorgPhone, making several photos of a place pop up. "Here, you can hold it. Swipe your finger left to see a new picture," he tells me, handing his BorgPhone over after making one of the pictures bigger.
It's of a colorful place, filled with monster looking things. Everything seems themed like monsters. There's one picture of swings, all with colorful seats that look like monsters. Another has what looks like people sitting inside of a plastic monster, laughing, with their hands in the air.
The next picture, however, is a lot less joyous. The girl from earlier, Miriam I think, is tied up with ropes, a terrified expression on her face. She's sitting inside a plastic monster, going down a track that has a hole in it. In front of her, an electrified figure is floating in the air, pushing back on the monster. The monster is covered in lightning bolts. The caption underneath reads "lightning ninja saves his girlfriend from falling to her death".
"Jay?" I get his attention. He zoned off while we were walking, but once he realizes what picture I'm looking at, his eyes widen. "This is you, right?" I clarify.
He nods, swallowing in the process. "Yeah, but it was from a long, long, long time ago," he clarifies.
"What's a 'girlfriend?'" I ask, rereading the caption.
He awkwardly scratches the back of his neck,"Well, you see, when you're attracted to someone in a certain way, and they're attracted to you the same way, people usually form a certain type of relationship..."
"Like sisters?" I ask.
His eyes widen, and he quickly shakes his head,"No, no, no, not like sisters. You don't feel the type of attraction towards your family members, but other people. It's a different type of attraction. You want to be near them. They don't leave your thoughts, no matter how hard you try. No matter how bad for you they are, you can't help but want to be near them," he explains awkwardly, but he gets more comfortable the more he starts talking.
"It feels different than anything else you've felt," I say. He nods, a little smile on his face.
"Exactly. When they touch you, it's like you're only with them, and nothing else matters. You do special things with only them and no one else," he elaborates, looking over at me. The look he gives me is unlike any look I've ever gotten before, but it makes my heart race.
"How long does it usually take for it to happen, for the attraction to happen?" I ask him, trying to see something.
"It all depends. Sometimes, you see someone and it just happens. It's as if you already know that something's there. Other times, it has to build up over time. Either way, it usually gets stronger the more you're around that person," he explains. Instead of continuing to walk, he stops.
"Are boys also called girlfriends, or are they boyfriends?" I ask. The smile on his face grows. I stop in front of him.
"They're boyfriends," he answers. Suddenly, a realization comes over me.
"You felt that way about her, Miriam? How you just described?" I ask him, a pang in my chest.
"Well, I thought I did, but I become less and less sure every day. Besides, as I said, that was a long, long, long time ago," he sighs.
"What happened to make those feelings about her go away?" I ask softly, placing my hand on one of his shoulders. The same electrical current, the calming yet alluring feeling, fills me again.
"She didn't want to be in a relationship with me, but with Kai. She would constantly try to get with him instead. I was too blind to see, but when I caught her saying that she only wanted to be with Kai the whole time, it hurt. I cut things off," he explains, looking down.
"That's her loss. If she did that, she didn't deserve you. From what I've seen, you're an amazing person. You deserve to have a girlfriend who treats you like it," I tell him, gently reaching up and moving his chin up, so we're now making eye contact. Looking into his eyes, mixed with how close we are, makes my knees go weak.
"Th-thank you, Nya," he stutters, flustered. We stand like that for a while, not moving, just looking at each other. I feel an urge to get closer to him, but I stay where I am.
"Jay? Aren't you supposed to be at the banquet?" at the sound of another voice, both of us step apart. When I turn to look at the owner of the voice, I see a man with a grey mustache. He has on a black uniform with a hat on.
"Oh, hi Commissioner. We actually came to see you," Jay says awkwardly. "Can we come in?" Looking up at the sign above us, I realize we've been standing in front of the police station.
"Sure, come in. It is a bit chilly outside, after all," he says, opening the door for us. The two of us walk through the door into the much warmer room. "What do you need?"
"You know how I was asking you about those files the other day?" Jay starts. The commissioner sighs, looking at Jay disappointedly.
"I already told you that I'm not going to show you the file on Ciara, especially not with someone else here," he says, quickly glancing over at me.
"This is important, like really, really important. Please, Commissioner," Jay pleads.
"Look, you're only what, seventeen? I don't have any idea how old your friend over here is..."
"Sixteen," I answer.
"...but you definitely should not be looking at the files of a murderer," he finishes, putting his hands on his hips.
"But this is important! Ninjago depends on it!" Jay tells him.
"It's against the law for me to show it to you, especially since you're a minor," he explains. "Look, since you saved Ninjago, I'll help you. If each of you get a parent or legal guardian in here to say that it's okay, I'll show you the file."
"Yeah, that's not going to work..." Jay drifts off.
"Why not?" the commissioner asks, confused.
"Ciara killed both of her parents," Jay gestures towards me. "I'm just trying to give her evidence."
When Jay says that, the commissioner gasps, looking at my face again,"Oh my, this is Kai's sister, isn't it?" Jay nods. "I'm really not supposed to do this..."
"Please."
"Alright, follow me."
