vingt trois

"You knew Allison?"

"Knew her?" Elaine eyes fluttered behind Scott's shoulder, watching Allison play with her hair. "She was my best friend."

"Lanie." Lydia whispered in realization, letting her head fall into her hands. She took a deep breath and let them fall into her lap, looking up at her. "You're Lanie."

"Yeah." Underneath her nail was a harsh white as Elaine pressed her thumb hard against the thin piece of metal in her hands. "And Lydia, Isaac talked to Deaton and what happened isn't really your fault."

"Apparently, Banshees only get along with a few harbingers of death." Isaac explained, noticing Lydia's confusion. "For someone like Elaine, your connection to the dead is like a weapon, and it's in your nature to use it."

"Someone like Elaine?" Scott asked, Elaine and Isaac sharing a look.

"I can see ghosts." Elaine said bluntly, a sharp silence filling the room. "When I touch people, I can see, hear, and feel the spirits connected to them. Allison is connected to me, so I see her all the time."

"You can see Allison?" Stiles leaned forward, his voice lowering to a whisper as his eyes darted around. "Is she here right now?"

"Tell him yes, and that I've tip-toeing around like a coyote watching him." Allison leaned forward, wiggling her fingers above his head with a grin.

"She said she's been tip-toeing around like a coyote and watching you." Elaine had to hold back a laugh as Stiles's eyes widened.

Her urge to chuckle faded as soon as she saw the look on Scott's face, practically all the color washed out of his tan skin. Without saying a word he got up and walked downstairs, Isaac beginning to stand up.

"I think I've got this one." Elaine shook her head at him, standing up from the recliner and following Scott up the stairs. She listened carefully, as she walked down the hall, stopping at a room where she could hear sniffling. "Scott?"

She slowly pushed open the door, Scott wiping at his cheeks and turning around to give her a weak smile. He cleared his throat, shaking his head. "Sorry."

"What do you have to be sorry about?" Elaine asked softly, her eyebrows furrowing together in confusion.

"I guess the one thing that has comforted me the past few months was the thought that she had moved on," Scott took a choked up breath, looking up at the ceiling. "That she wasn't in pain anymore."

"Scott, she's not in pain." Elaine comforted, her eyes glancing over at Allison, who was watching them with a heartbroken expression. "I can promise you that."

"How do you know that?" Scott's eyes became tearful again, biting down on his tongue as he stared at Elaine. "Why hasn't she moved on?"

"I like to believe that they don't move on because they have unfinished business, even if they don't know what it is." She said, wetting her lips nervously. "Allison has spend this whole time watching over you, making sure that you're happy."

"Why would she do that?" Scott's voice was hoarse, his hand wiping away a stray tear roughly.

"Because I love you." Allison whispered, making Elaine look up.

"Because she loves you." Elaine repeated Allison's words, Scott's breath catching in his chest. The words struck a chord in his heart, his tears spilling over before he could stop them.

"Tell him that he needs to stop feeling guilty for moving on." Allison was behind Elaine now, Elaine nodding just the slightest. "That the only thing I care about is all of them being happy."

"Allison says that you need to stop feeling guilty for moving on." Scott looked up at her, the look on his face breaking her own heart. "That she just wants all of you to be happy."

"I love her." Scott whispered, Elaine hearing Allison let out a shaky breath. "I don't think I'll ever stop."

"She knows."
