The Shadow That Snuck Up Too Close

Three Days Later

'Could she have checked my call history without asking!?'

'Damn it. We lost the alien's location......Wait! There it is, standing in front of the spacecraft!'

'This is trouble! Your mom got a call from someone claiming she was your fiancé!'

'No, it can't be! And the alien's been taken out.'

'She contacted me too. "Everyone in my way has been eliminated. I can't wait for our date tomorrow."'

'I never agreed to any dates! The woman's more dangerous than the aliens!'

"What are we watching?" You questioned incredulously at the TV screen.

You and Saitama were lying on his futon watching the events in the movie play out. At first, you understood what was going on but the next there was aliens and everything threw you off.

"I don't know, I thought it looked good," Saitama replied.

You sighed tiredly and sunk farther into the bed sheets. You propped a pillow under your chin and hugged it tightly as you continued to pay attention to the men shooting the aliens.

By the time it was midnight, the main characters figured out that the crazy stalker was actually and alien and worked together to take her out. Saitama then grabbed the remote and turned off the TV. He got up and took out the DVD so he could return it tomorrow and switched on the light from the living room.

"Man....stalkers are creepy...." Saitama muttered as he inserted the disc into its case. "Hey (y/n), you wanna separate the sheets and get to bed now?" He turned to you but you had the covers over your head.

He crawled over to you and removed the fabric. He was surprised to find your sleeping features still and calm as the silence in the room. "Hm, fine sleep there if you want," Saitama mumbled. At the sound of his words, your form shuddered and snuggled closer into the futon. Saitama smiled softly, enjoying seeing this quiet, sensitive side of you. He brushed some hair out of your face gently then recovered you with the sheets.

Saitama looked curiously out the open patio window, an uneasy feeling settling over him. But he shook his head went out to check if the clothes he had hung out were dry now.

As he was rummaging through the rack, the same sensation crawled up his spine again. He scratched the back of his neck to shake it off. What the hell is this? Ever since (y/n) came back, I've been getting this weird vibe that there are eyes following us around.

Out in the distance, Saitama saw a small flicker of light that quickly died out. He raised an eyebrow in question but shook his head and passed it off as nothing.

I've defeated a lot of bad guys in the past, and I'm sure (y/n) has too.... but maybe someone has a grudge against one of us? If it's true, then it wouldn't be a problem. However, if this grudge or anger developed into some kind of warped love, like that movie....how should I handle it?

Saitama had to admit, ever since you walked back into his life nothing had been the same. He didn't mind it of course, he was happy to have you for company. But it was strange, so sudden. He started feeling the need to take care of you. And if some stalker or old villain set out for revenge came to attack you, he was more determined than ever to keep you under his wing. He couldn't explain it, you just had this weird effect on him.

Saitama turned around to glance at your sleeping figure only to be scared half to death by you sneaking up right behind him. "JESUS, WOMAN! You scared the shit out of me!" Saitama yelled.

You scrunched your nose in disapproval. "Shut up, not so loud...." You yawned, rubbing your eyes drowsily.

All of sudden, you saw a shadow run past the light that was pooling outside, making you squeak in surprise. Saitama automatically threw you behind him and shoved the curtains out of the way. He held a firm stance in defense as he waited for the attacker's first blow.

But there was nothing inside the silent apartment. You sighed, tiredly resting your head on Saitama's shoulder. "Man....I think that movie freaked us out pretty badly...."

"Yeah..." He responded, his eyes lingering on the contents of his home. "This place is getting pretty messy."

"If you want I can clean up," You offered. "I don't go to work till 10."

"Work? You have a job?"

"Yup, I'll be able to start paying rent soon," You looked up at him proudly. "What did you think I did when you're not here?"

"I don't know, I just didn't think you worked," Saitama said.

"Hey, I'm useful!" You smacked his arm with a pout. "But anyway, let's go to sleep." You went over to the futon and separated some sheets to make your own bed. Not long after, you and Saitama were cocooned in your own blankets fast asleep.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's been three days since I started investigating the secret to Saitama Sensei and (y/n) Sensei's power. I have yet to gain any information and time is ticking away...
Genos withdrew his golden iris from the huge telescope to jot down the small details of his findings. "Are they purposefully being cautious so no one can find out? I hope I can come up with something soon." He said closing the notebook shut.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The next morning you woke up and found that Saitama had left early. You had 2 hours until you had to leave for work so as promised you tidied up the apartment. In the midst of your cleaning, you remembered the dilemma you still had at hand. Your clothes.

You still had Genos's spare clothes but you still didn't have your own set and had to borrow some of Saitama's. You were hoping to go shopping today after work with your new earnings. You made a mental note to grab some extra cash from your savings before heading out.

Once you were done with the apartment, your next task was to head down to the Jonasama restaurant that wasn't too far from home. On your walk, you had a creeping sensation that wouldn't stop bugging you. Every now and then you would glance around to see if someone was following you but noting seemed out of place. The sidewalk was full of normal passerbys.

'As I suspected, she's on her guard,' Genos thought to himself. 'She's very perceptive....but maybe a little too much? Could this mean something?'

Genos's eyes widened as he saw Saitama entering the restaurant before you without him noticing. You commenced back on your stroll after holding a questioning gaze at the streets and went inside the establishment.

'This is the first time Saitama Sensei's eating out....I see.... Perhaps he and (y/n) Sensei have some kind of pact and strengthen themselves with the food they eat here....It could also be why (y/n) was so persistent on working here.'

Genos quickly wrote down his hypothesis in his notebook before following you two inside.

As soon as you got in, you headed off to the locker room and changed into your uniform. The uniform was a short black maid outfit with slightly puffed up sleeves. It had a white apron that tied up in the back with a bow that matched the choker at the base of your neck. In addition to that, you had a frilly white bandana that also matched the black cuffs on your wrists. The last thing was a pair of black, fishnet stocking and some black and white heels.

You sighed as you grabbed a small pad and a pen from your locker and headed out to your assigned tables. The good thing was only one person was occupying one of yours. You wandered over to them and opened up to your first available page in your memo book.

As you got closer, you realized you knew this bald man. "Saitama?" You asked.

He glanced at you in confusion, but he froze when he saw who it was. "(y-y/n)? You work here!?"

"Yeah, what are you doing here?"

"I'm here to eat, obviously. But what are you wearing!?" Saitama inquired as he stared at the uniform, with a slight blush creeping up on his face.

"Shut up!" You yelled in embarrassment. Your face began to heat up as you stood there fidgeting. It was humiliating enough to have to wear the stupid thing and serve people, but now someone you knew was seeing you in it. "Would you just hurry up and leave?"

"(y/n)!" Your manager shouted at you. "Do NOT speak our customers that way!"

"Oh I'm sorry," You rolled your eyes then gave Saitama your helpless, tip-reeling innocent look. "Master~~, please order your shit and leave."

"(Y/N)!!"

"I'm kidding, I'm kidding!"

When you looked back at Saitama he had the biggest blush on his face. The expression was so adorably sexy and the threatening words sped up his heart beat. It was strange but the whole scene was an incredible turn on for him.

"You okay, dude?" You said, poking his side. He tried to recover quickly but he still looked slightly nervous. "Uh, yeah, I'm fine."

"So what'll it be?" You asked, tapping the menu in his grasp. "We have specials on steak right now."

"Um...." Saitama hummed as he took out his small money pouch and inspected its contents. "Just give me whatever's cheapest."

"150 gram steak?" You looked at him for confirmation.

"Uh, no..." He replied, flipping through the laminated booklet and pointing to a side order of fries. "This."

You raised an eyebrow. "That's all?"

"Yup."

"What!? No way! You have to eat something that'll actually fill you up!"

"(y/n), this is all I can afford," Saitama chuckled. "Looks like it's time to job hunt again."

"Well, in the meantime, let me pay for this meal," You offered.

"What? I can't let you do that."

"Why not?" You countered. "I owe it to you. You let me have a place to stay, lent me clothes to sleep in, you even make me food. Come on, this one will be on me."

"No, I can't accept that," Saitama shook his head. "I'm glad to help you out but I'm not taking advantage of your state."

"I feel like I'm taking advantage of your kindness, Saitama," You admitted. "Please, let me make it up to you."

"No way," He waved you off. "Just get me some fries."

"Saitama...."

"(y/n), just please?"

"(y/n)!" Your manager yelled at you. "Don't just stand there idly chatting! Get back to work!"

You growled in annoyance. "Uggghh, you win this round, you ass." You huffed and rounded back to the front to drop off the order. On your walk, Saitama involuntarily noticed how nice your legs looked in those stockings.

"Table 7 is being occupied," Another waitress told you. You sighed, knowing that was one of yours.

As you made your way to the table, you saw that it was a single person waiting there. Huh, this might be easy....

"Welcome Master~~, what would you like this evening?" You only stuck to the script because it sometimes got you more tips. You looked up from your pen and paper and realized that you knew this person too. "What the hell is up with today? First, Saitama, now you?"

Genos's eyes went wide as if he were caught doing something he shouldn't be. Then he looked you and up and down causing you to smack him with the pad. "Oi, my face's up here!" You scowled.

"(y/n) Sensei....? What are you—I didn't anticipate that this was your—"

"What are you doing here?" You asked. "Spying on me?"

Genos's face went bleak. "What...!?"

You laughed. "Just joking, but seriously what is today, 'Coincidence Day'? I keep having these strange occurrences...."

"N-no, I'm just eating here, nothing else...."

"Hm, okay," You said, "So what would you like?"

"Just coffee, please."

"Really?" You commented. "You're not going to eat anything? Wait, can you eat anything?"

"Yes I can," Genos replied. "But I'm not hungry."

You shrugged. "Okay, black coffee or....?"

"Black, please."

You gave him a curt nod. "Okie dokie, sir, comin' right up."

You went to the kitchen and poured the coffee into and mug. At the same time, Saitama's fries had been given to you. You dropped off his food first then went back to Genos.

"Here yu go," You said, placing the cup in front of him. As you turned to leave, his metal hand grabbed your wrist. "Wait!"

You gazed at him in confusion. "Hm? What's up? You finally want something?"

"No, but what did Saitama order?"

"Some fries, why?"

"That's it?" He questioned incredulously, "And uh no reason, just curious."

You looked at Genos strangely but decided not to linger much on the subject. You were busy after all. "Alright, well I'll see you later."

A few minutes later, more of your tables started to fill up and you were once again killing yourself walking in heels. You were bustling from one end of the restaurant to the other when you suddenly passed by Saitama again.

"Hey, (y/n)!"

"Hm? What can I help you with?" You asked.

"I'm missing a fry."

You peered at him, questioning if he was serious. "What?"

"My long fry went missing when I got back from the bathroom," Saitama looked at you quizzically. "Did you eat it?"

"Excuse me?" You glared at him. "Does it look like I have time to eat anything?" You gestured to the heavy plates on your tray.

"I mean, did you see anyone eat it?"

"No, Saitama, maybe you ate it. It is your food," You said as you walked away from the weirdo. The stress of the day was getting to you and you were just hoping to be able to make it out alive from this place. You thought this place would be a good job what with its ordinary aura and unknown chain link, but it was getting on your nerves to be on everybody's beck and call.

'He makes a trip to a family restaurant and orders only French fries. No normal person would dream of such behavior. There might be a strong possibility that this is the special food that holds the key to Saitama and (y/n) Sensei's power,' Genos mused to himself as you came back around.

"Hey, how yu holding up there?" You greeted with a hand on your hip.

"I'm fine," Genos responded. "I'd like the check please."

"Sure," You said pulling out the note pad from the pocket of your apron. You tried to balance the dishes in your hand but you accidently leaned too far to the right and were about to fall on Genos. However, he easily caught the plates and grabbed your arm to keep you up.

"Ah, sorry," You apologized, taking the dishes from him. You set them down on the table to avoid another incident like that. "Alright, well here you go. And just a little reminder, you should totally tell my boss I'm doing great and get me promoted."

Genos's mouth curled up into a small smirk. "Of course, being served by my Sensei in a maid outfit is entirely appropriate for me to brag about you to your employer."

"Don't call me that," You spoke. "And thanks for being such a perve about it."

His eyes slightly widened. "Oh, no, I didn't mean it like that—"

"Yeah, yeah, whatever," You rolled your eyes and took his empty mug. "Thanks for stopping by." You were about to turn and leave when you felt something heavy drop into your apron pocket. You reached into and pulled out a thick roll of bills. "W-wha....?"

"You did serve me well, I believe I'm entitled to compensate right?" Genos said.

"B-but...holy shit...this much? I feel like a prostitute for some reason."

"You are no such thing," Genos scolded. "I am glad to repay you for your hospitality."

"Holy fuck...." You kept saying as you stared at the cash.

"Besides, I find that you wearing that outfit made my stay more enjoyable."

"Oh fuck you!" You pouted.

Genos smiled softly. "Well, it was nice speaking to you again. Thank you for everything."

"Sure thing," You waved goodbye as he went to the front desk to pay.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After work you went down to the shops and bought heaps of clothes. Genos's tip really did pull you through with most of the sales so you really needed to thank him for it. You also got some other essentials you'd need that Saitama couldn't provide. Once all that was settled, you noticed the sun was starting to go down. You had to get home soon before it got dark. You didn't want to be out alone in the streets no matter how powerful you were.
You sighed, remembering what your life was before all this. You were a homeless child with nothing but the torn up clothes on your back. You recalled the many time you had to go hungry because you couldn't find any food to eat. The longest you had gone without food was a whole month. Of course this would be impossible for any other human but you were different.
You were made different.
Ever since you could remember, you were brought up in the medical labs being prodded and jabbed with syringed and needles. Your mother was there though. She would hold your hand and help you through the painful insertions of drugs. Then, one day, you didn't see her. More specifically, it was after your transformation.
Every time you tried to remember this part your mind would get fuzzy and you'd start to get a pounding headache. You were being led through a pair of white double doors and your mother was running up to you. Then she was suddenly taken away. You could see figure in the white suit and accents of red from the cuffs and tie so you could guess that that person was most likely Arco. Your mother was crying, begging for your safety, but Arco only roughly pushed her to the ground.
She was lying unconscious on the floor and the next second her body was gone and you were staring up into a big bright light. A blink and you were looking at Arco's proud face. You tried to open your mouth and ask where your mother was but the darkness suddenly consumed you.
Just reminiscing about this vision made your head buzz with an oncoming headache. You rubbed your temples tiredly as you kept walking down the sidewalk.
After that day, thing's became different for you. You were stronger, faster, smarter....it was incredible. At first. Then, came the 'missions'.
Arco had you train hard after that day. When you were finally seen fit enough, he began sending you on assignments that you regret doing now. You were cold hearted, you were ruthless, you showed no one no mercy.
You eventually became aware that this was wrong and cruel with the loss of someone who meant a lot to you. It still hurt you to think that your acknowledgement created his demise.
Once that occurred, you began to hate Arco and everything he did to achieve what he had. It sickened you that you had helped this man in getting exactly what he wanted. You revolted. You fought back, refused to go on missions, attacked various of his elite soldiers and took them out with a single strike.
Needless to say, this angered the tyrant. He caught you and locked you up until you complied to his demands. When you didn't there was hell to pay.
You shivered at the thought of those horrible, torturous days you had to awake to. They did unspeakable atrocities to break your pride down and destroy that seed of rebellion grew deep in your heart. After years of agony and distraught, you thought to escape. The first attempt was when you met Saitama.
You didn't mean to get so involved but you couldn't help it. Your heart still had that kindness hidden within you. Your plan was to kill Crablante and ditch the gear so you could run away. Unfortunately, they found you before you could. Your body was already frail so it wasn't hard for them to capture you. After that, you had to endure another year of torture to have another chance of escape.
Two years ago, that's when you snapped. You couldn't take it anymore. You broke, and you broke to pieces. And all that shattered glass was enough to obliterate the whole north side of their facility containment where they kept you. Your rampage is a hazy memory but you're just glad you had enough energy to pull that off.
Then you were on the run. You were going to make sure you were never going back there. You would rather die than go back to that horrific place.
But you were happy now. You had a home, you had a friend to talk to....you couldn't ask for anything better.
"Hey."
You were suddenly sprung out of your thoughts by the voice. You yelped in alarm and whipped around toward the sound. "Who's there?" You demanded.
You heard a light chuckled and turned in its direction. You saw the smile before you heard the rest of the laugh. "It's certainly been sometime, hasn't it Shini?"
You felt your heart stop beating in your chest as you saw the mop of white hair that gazed down at the pavement in amusement. You unconsciously stepped backwards into the street. "Y-y-you...."
The young man looked up at you with his piercing eyes. "I've missed you, (y/n)."
"Kura...." You trembled in fear. "W-wha..."
"Is this any way to greet an old friend?" He smiled broadly and opened his arms as if expecting you to hug him.
"What do you want?" You backed further away from him.
He dropped his hands, the smile vanishing from his lips. "I see....you didn't miss? You only care about what's going on with them."
"Who sent you? Was it Arco?" You asked.
"I'm only here to tell you Arco's getting antsy, he really misses his precious—"
"Shut up!" You snapped. "I'm never going back there! You'll have to drag me back there kicking and screaming if you ever dream of getting me back there!"
"Calm down (y/n)-chan!" Kura motioned with his hands. "I'm not here to collect you. I'm only here to warn you."
"Warn me of what?" You inquired. He sauntered forward and leaned into your ear. "He's watching your every move (y/n). You should really be careful of what you're doing," Kura snickered.
You again stepped away from him and tried to keep a brave face on. "Is that all?"
"For now," Kura hummed. "But I think I'll have my fun as well."
Your eyes went wide. "What do you mean by that?"
"You'll just have to wait and see, (y/n)-chan," He tapped your lips and laughed. "Besides, there are some unwanted ears among us." You saw his gaze look toward the corner of your vision and you automatically snapped your attention over there. But it was just the empty roadside.
"What are you talking about?" You turned back to Kura, but he had disappeared. "Kura? Kura! Where the hell did you go!?" You hissed.
You didn't find him anywhere after that. You gave up your search and decided to take a longer way to get home to make sure Kura or anybody else didn't follow you on the way.
Why? Why now? Of all times, why did they have to reappear now!? Everything was calm for a few days, you thought you could actually start a life without fear of them, but they had to come back and haunt you at the worst times.
You stormed inside the apartment and slammed the door shut behind you before you slumped to the floor. You hid your head in arms and tried to contain the urge to cry. Not long after, Saitama heard your entrance and came over to see what was going on.
"(y/n)? Oh you're back," Saitama said, then looked at the position and cocked his head to the side. "Whoa are you okay?"
You sniffed. "Yeah, yeah, of course."
"Are you sure? You look a little—"
"I'm fine!" You abruptly stated. You looked up and saw Saitama's slightly shocked expression and sighed. "I-I'm sorry, I just....nevermind, how was your day?"
"It was okay," He answered unsurely. " Are you sure you're going to be alright?"
"'Course," You gave him a half hearted smile. "So why was it just okay?"
"Well, someone stole my fry, and that was enough to piss me off. At least I found out who it was..."
"You did?"
"Yup," Saitama nodded. "It was some old villain I defeated."
"Do you think more of these villains will come after you?" You asked metaphorically for yourself too.
"It probably won't be the last time," Saitama shrugged. "But well it can't be helped, it's a hero's fate I guess."
"But think about all the people you've helped along the way," You said, trying to comfort Saitama's glum mood. "You gotta think positive and remember those who support you every step of the way."
He put a hand to his chin in thought. "Think positively, huh?"
"You have to believe that there will be people in this world who appreciate all the things that you do," You smiled softly. "And if you're looking for proof, then consider me your number one fan!"
Saitama raised an eyebrow and chuckled with a head shake. "It's been three years since I became a hero, and I'm not saying I need fans, but it would've been nice if you had come earlier into my life so you could see what I've been doing."
"Well I'm here now, so it's better late than never," You grinned.
Saitama couldn't help but smile at how hopeful and cheery you were. You helped his shitty day become a bit brighter with the motivational words that you gave him. It made him sad to think that something was bothering you and you wouldn't tell him about it. He knew that if he asked you wouldn't let him console you when you obviously looked distraught about something.
Goddamn this one was long.....15 mother effin' pages, holy shit. Well it was fun to write :) Hope you guys liked the chappie!
