Author's Note (Explanation)

DON'T READ UNLESS YOU HAVE READ THE WHOLE BOOK (OR UNLESS YOU DO NOT MIND THE MAJOR TWIST BEING SPOILED)

Okay, so I'm willing to bet that most, if not all of you, hated the ending. That's okay, I myself sometimes felt that I shouldn't have ended it this way, but I feel it was a necessity.

First, let's start off with the nature of a dystopia. It is a corrupt utopia. Many aspects of the world are falling apart, society has corrupt ideals. People shouldn't have happy endings in this kind of society, or at least the happy endings that you would expect.

Surprisingly, all of the characters ended up having happy endings (albeit twisted in some ways) except one. That one is Trace. I really feel bad for him. He got put through a ton of shit and didn't gain much. Sure he got the girl for a little while, but then she was taken away from him and returned to her old life. His fate is the only one that I'm not satisfied with. I feel that he is the only character with noble intentions throughout the whole book and he ended up in the worst situation, but that's life sometimes, unfortunately.

Many of you may be wondering why I say only one person didn't get a "happy" ending because the thing that Nyx feared the most happened to her. You have to look at it from afterwards, though. She is back in her seemingly perfect society and finally she can see no fault in it. Her and Soren will also finally be happy again. Although this is what she originally dreaded, it is the best scenario for her and her soon-to-be daughter to be in. There is no risk for them on the Inside, nobody will randomly come up to them and kidnap them or even kill them. Nyx will have security.

Now I'm sure that most of you liked Nyx, and I do too for the most part. I have one question for you about her. When she ran away, do you think that she acted selflessly out of pure concern for her daughter's life or do you think that she acted because she was selfish and didn't want to change? I know that Nyx tries to play it off as concern for her daughter, but she is a genuinely selfish person, especially as seen when she wants to abandon Cyrus after he is kidnapped. She likes to try to make herself seem innocent in this world when nobody really is.

Now on to Cyrus. I'm not sure how many of you were expecting that twist, I hope none of you! While that may seem like a total random thing that came out of nowhere I feel that I left some big clues. One such clue is when Nyx and Cyrus get into their big argument after Trace spends some time alone when he learns of Xander's execution. Cyrus is jealous of Nyx and how she didn't get exiled from the Inside. Cyrus doesn't understand why Nyx would leave something that he considered to be so wonderful and that is why he questioned her so much. Another clue I left was when Cyrus was talking about how he was exiled from his old home and he would do anything to get back there. He was talking about the Inside. When he is having that conversation with Nyx, he truly means everything that he says. He does really care about Trace, but once he learned that he could be made Enhanced again, he was desperate to find a way back to his old life.

Now on to Soren. I'm pretty sure that from what I've seen in the comments you all for the most part hate him. I actually feel a ton of sympathy for him because this is not how he truly is. Is he just now doing what he was "programmed", so to speak, what to do. He truly cares about Nyx, and you can see that through some of his actions. He is not necessarily the "bad guy" in this story. I don't really think that there is one single antagonist, rather the society is more of the antagonizing force.

The final chapter is where I really show you how terrible this society is through the eyes of a changed Nyx. What Nyx learns is actually the opposite of what I'm trying to tell you, my readers. I'm trying to show you that beauty is not everything. It doesn't guarantee that you will live a happy life, so don't focus on that. (I'm not saying that intelligence isn't everything either, though). This story was kind of my way of portrayal of an extreme case of what I think may result from society's perception of beauty and expectation for others to conform to their ideals.

This is all that I can think of writing for now, but if you have any questions, especially regarding my reasoning for things, feel free to ask!

Oh, by the way, I will be rewriting Enhanced since this is just a first draft. I will be doing it as another book, because I feel that it will be easier for me since I will likely be changing many things and adding chapters and I want to keep my original framework as a guide. If you would like to make a cover for my second draft I would appreciate it and just let me know! I will be updating the new and improved Enhanced infrequently as I will be working on other things (The Watty Games, You're Not the Same, and another unknown story).

Also, I am working on Clarity, the sequel to Enhanced. This story will be told from the perspective of Aphrodite (Nyx's daughter). This one may or may not be more satisfying than Enhanced ended up being, but nothing is quite certain yet!

Thank you for spending your time on this book!
