present

Hello everybody. I am Minh Thảo and I am going to continue the topic today with section number xxx : Three-word verbs and the general exercises which help you review all information we present today.

First of all, I am going to talk about three-word verbs.

What does "three-word verbs" mean? This name is taken to distinguish from two-word verbs such as wake up, come up, get up like you knew from the previous section.

Some transitive phrasal verbs are used in combination with certain prepositions. You can see the formula on the screen.

Remember that these phrasal verbs are transitive. It means they take an object.

For example, "come up with" is a three-word verb which means invent, and come up is the transitive phrasal verb.

Besides, these combinations just go with certain prepositions. For instance, all of you know look forward to means await eagerly but look forward with does not exsist.

There are some important things that help you use three-word verbs more effectively.

The first thing is three-word verbs are usually inseparable. I think you can understand it through the example. "Come up with" is like one word which you cannot separate into 2 or 3 parts. Take a look at example:

We need to come up with a solution soon. This is the right sentence.

We need to come up a solution with soon. This is the wrong one.

Second, Two-word verbs and three-word verbs have the same meaning.

As you can see, drop out and drop out of have the same meaning which is he quits his school or his job to do something else.

Third, Two-word verbs and three-word verbs have very different meanings.

For example, come up means happen or arise but come up with means invent.

This sentence means the boy found the way to deal with his plan when the sun was rising. Come up and come up with have very different meanings.

Here I show you some familiar three-word verbs. Because there are a lot of phrasal verbs in the world which we cannot remember, the best way to learn phrasal verbs is you need to do homework a lot. If you get used to them, you can remember the meaning naturally. And another method I learn on the internet is that when you see a new phrasal verb which you haven't seen it before or you don't remember the meaning exactly, don't look it up on the dictionary immediately, let's try to guess. Maybe the situation or circumstance of the sentence is useful for you to choose the correct answer. After that, check your choice on dictionary. I think more than 70% you have a right answer.

Ok. That's all I have to say about three-word verbs. Now I would like to move on exercises.

Exercise 1: choose the relevant phrasal verb in the box to put in every space. You have 4 minutes to finish 8 sentences. Let's begin.

Time is over. We have 8 sentences for 8 students. Who will do this?

Look at the screen and you can see the answers.

I am going to explain the meaning of these phrasal verbs.

Turn on means start a machine or a light. Turn off means stop a machine or a light. Turn up means make louder a TV or radio. Another meaning is appear. Turn down means lower the volume. Another meaning is reject. Turn in means give work to a boss or teacher, submit. And turn into means change from one form to another.

We complete exercise 1. Let's go with exercise 2. Connect these phrasal verbs with their meanings. You have 2 minutes to do this.

Who volunteer to do this exercise? I need one person.

Does anyone have any other opinions?

Look at the screen and you can see the answers.

That brings me to the end of my presentation. So I hope that you're a little clearer on phrasal verbs as well as the important points you have to pay attention to. Native speakers use phrasal verbs a lot when they are speaking English therefore understanding deeply about this topic is very necessary for you to use and speak English more fluently. Thank you.
