9 - The Call
Come on, Lix! Put your phone down and focus on the here and now!" Han called out, annoyed, as Felix once again stared at his phone.
"But—" Felix tried to protest, but his best friend immediately interrupted him.
"I get it. He hasn't written in a week. But there must be a damn good reason for it!" Han tried to reassure Felix.
But Felix was too depressed to listen to Han. Hyunjin had promised to call him on Monday. Today was Sunday, and since then, silence. Not a single word, not even a message. It was eating Felix up inside. It wasn't easy for him to admit that the handsome Hyunjin had really gotten under his skin, even though they had only recently met. Why had he gotten so worked up over this? Why had he let his feelings escalate, only to end up like a wounded animal wallowing in his own misery?
Felix felt terrible. And then a thought suddenly struck him like lightning.
Minho!
"Han!" Felix suddenly shouted, nearly scaring Jisung, who was in the middle of painting his nails.
"Great, Felix! Now I have to start over!" Han grumbled, but Felix was unstoppable.
"Forget your nails! Han! Your boyfriend!"
"My boyfriend?" Jisung asked, confused, clearly not understanding what Felix was getting at.
"Yeah, Minho!" Felix almost squeaked in excitement.
"Ah, that guy! What about him?" Han asked, still clueless.
"Han!!! Can you ask him why Hyunjin isn't writing? That would be a great idea! Please call him!"
"Well, I don't know..." Han hesitated, and Felix could feel his impatience growing.
"Come on! Don't leave your best friend hanging! Please!" Felix begged, practically pleading with him.
Han reluctantly grabbed his phone and looked at Felix, whose eyes were filled with hope. He didn't want to let his friend down, so maybe trying wouldn't hurt. He dialed Minho's number, and after two rings, Minho picked up.
"I-I... well... w-we..." Han stammered, completely unprepared for what was about to happen.
"We?!" Minho's voice came through, a mix of interest and skepticism.
"A-ah, I mean, me and Felix... we, um, Felix wanted to know if you've heard anything from Hyunjin?" Han asked nervously. At that moment, he almost regretted calling. Minho could really be intimidating.
"Aha. You're calling me to ask about another guy?" Minho's serious tone made Felix furrow his brow, and Han froze.
Before Han could reply, Minho snorted through the phone.
"His phone got stolen. That's why he couldn't get in touch. What's going on?"
Felix immediately shook his head to signal Han to stop asking questions. But Minho was quicker.
"Are you asking for your friend? Tell him, Hyunjin will get in touch soon. He just had other things to deal with," Minho said flatly and hung up.
Felix wasn't exactly sure what it was about Minho that he found so attractive, but he kept his thoughts to himself. After all, Minho had helped. Slightly irritated, Han continued with his nail routine, while Felix got lost in his thoughts. He didn't want to stress over it anymore. If Hyunjin hadn't reached out, then there had to be a good reason for it.
...
Later that evening, Felix was lying on the couch, casually watching another episode of his show when suddenly his phone rang.
"Unknown" appeared on the screen. Felix hesitated. He didn't want to answer, especially since he didn't recognize the number. But something inside him made him press the green button.
Silence. Then, after a moment, a familiar voice.
"Felix?"
Felix's heart skipped a beat. It was Hyunjin's voice. That pleasant tingling sensation spread through his stomach, and his heart started racing.
"Heyy," Felix replied, instantly feeling how awkward his "heyy" sounded.
"Thank god! I'm so sorry, Felix! Please forgive me for not calling that night and for not reaching out sooner! Oh my god, you must think I'm such an idiot! How could I let my phone get stolen? I'm so sorry! I didn't even know what happened at first, and then it was just gone! Then the whole police report thing, and everything took so long..."
"Stop, Hyunjin! Take a breath and don't apologize a thousand times!" Felix interrupted, laughing as he ran a hand through his hair, cutting off Hyunjin's apology spree.
"Really. Hyunjin. It's okay! You're calling me now. It's all good. Tell me the whole story, take your time."
And so, Hyunjin explained everything that had happened. Felix listened attentively, asked a few questions, and the more they talked, the more relaxed he became. It was as if all the tension of the last few days slowly faded away. They talked about everything—Hyunjin's mom, the things they had done, and of course, when he would be back.
"So, what are you doing next Sunday?" Hyunjin surprised Felix with the question.
"Uh, nothing, why?" Felix replied, confused by the question.
"How about we do something together?"
Felix's heart skipped a beat. Hyunjin had actually asked him if they could do something together. Completely stunned, Felix could only say "Yes!"
The next day, Felix lay in his bed, staring at Hyunjin's latest painting on Instagram. Not long ago, Felix thought Hyunjin might have ghosted him. But now? Now they were planning to hang out on Sunday.
He had a date with Hyunjin.
