3 - Give me a Smile
Felix moved to the beat and toasted to Jisung. He had been persuaded to go to a club with him. Dark club music was playing, but it didn't bother the blonde. He could move to any kind of music. Jisung was also a good dancer and matched the beats well.
Felix studied his best friend. Somehow, he looked different. His hair was still black, slightly wavy, and rather short. The slightly longer strands fell into his face as he danced to the music. His face was almost oval, but whenever he shoved food into his mouth, he always looked like a squirrel gathering supplies for winter. The thought made Felix smile.
He couldn't pinpoint what was suddenly different about Jisung, so he turned his attention back to the music and the people in the club. They were rarely guests here. Since they were on a raised platform, Felix could look over the crowd. His gaze wandered over the faces of the dancers until he noticed a figure way in the back.
Was that the stranger from the train? Felix thought to himself, becoming immediately more alert. He stretched his neck and was about to walk toward that direction, but when he looked again, the figure was gone. Great. Now he was imagining things, and it was all that handsome guy's fault. Of course, he had been impossible to find all week, so Felix suspected that the stranger only took the train at the same time as Felix on Mondays.
"What are you looking at?" Han asked, blocking Felix's view.
"I thought I saw—"
"WHAT?!" Jisung screamed, as the music drowned out Felix's words. Felix leaned forward and told him he thought he had seen the stranger from the train in the club. Jisung screamed loudly in his ear:
"Then what are you still doing here?" which made Felix flinch.
"Sorry," Jisung muttered and followed Felix through the crowd. It was so packed that Han grabbed Felix's hand to make sure he wouldn't get lost.
The blonde headed in the direction he thought he had seen the stranger, but they only moved slowly. Finally, he felt they were in the right area and looked around. But there was no familiar face to be seen. Disappointed, Felix turned to Jisung and shook his head. He would have to wait until Monday, assuming his theory was right.
...
With a loud beep, the alarm clock announced Monday morning. Felix had a restless night, unsure whether he would see the handsome guy today or not. But he decided that his theory must be correct, and he would definitely see him again.
Groaning, he got up and shuffled to the bathroom. Cursing, he inspected the dark shadows under his eyes. Sighing, he peeled off his pajamas and jumped into the shower. The warmth felt good. He got out, grabbed a towel, and dried off. Then he went back to his bedroom's wardrobe. Another sigh escaped him as he thought, What should I wear? He decided on a white hoodie, black jeans, and later he would put on his beige trench coat.
Felix left the house. Of course, he had also put on some makeup and used his favorite perfume. He tried not to get his hopes up too much. Who knows, maybe the stranger wasn't always on the train on Mondays. Anyway, Felix was ready if he saw him, and that calmed him a bit. Last week, he had looked terrible in his worn-out jeans. Today, it was raining, so he waited for the train with an umbrella. Rain meant more people would be traveling by train, and that was confirmed when he boarded the train. Some seats were still available, and a little disappointed, Felix sat on the aisle seat, facing the opposite direction of the train.
He plugged his headphones into his ears and waited. He didn't want to close his eyes for fear of nodding off and missing the moment. And then, finally, the train arrived at the station where the stranger had boarded the last two times, and Felix looked at the people outside.
His heart skipped a beat when he saw a familiar face. Would he board here? Would he get to see him? Questions after questions rushed through Felix's mind, but his excitement was slightly dampened when he remembered that there were no more free seats in his compartment. But in the compartment across from his, there was still an aisle seat, and it was directly in Felix's line of sight. He wanted to turn his head to see if the stranger would get on their train car, but he thought it would be too obvious, so he waited with his heart pounding.
"Is this seat taken?" came the familiar voice, the one Felix would recognize anywhere after just hearing it once, and the blonde couldn't stop the excited tingling in his stomach. Felix studied his back as the stranger opened his coat. Suddenly, he turned around and looked directly into Felix's eyes, sending another wave of endorphins rushing through his stomach. When the handsome guy smiled and nodded slightly, Felix was done for. With flushed cheeks, he turned his head away. He couldn't handle that gaze anymore. But no more than a minute later, his eyes were back on the stranger, who had already pulled out his sketchbook and started drawing. Totally fascinated, Felix switched his gaze from the sketchbook to the pencil, to the stranger's concentrated face, and back again.
Felix's gaze fell on the handsome guy's face once more, only to be startled when he realized that the brown eyes were now directly on him. Felix felt his face flush, but somehow, he couldn't look away from the intense gaze. He noticed how the stranger's brown eyes studied him, moving from his eyes, then his face, his body, and Felix felt himself turn even redder. Embarrassed, Felix turned his gaze away again, but he had the feeling that he was still being watched. Just like the stranger's eyes kept finding Felix, the same happened on Felix's side.
The blonde was so distracted that he almost missed his stop and only realized he had to get off when everyone in the aisle was standing and blocking his view of the handsome guy. Looking outside, Felix realized it was his stop and jumped up in a panic. One last look confirmed to him that the stranger was looking after him, and for one last time, their gazes met. This time, Felix gave the stranger a smile, which made him look a little shy as he returned it.
Felix savored his little triumph and made his way to the university in a good mood.
