Chapter 2 - Liza
Adrenaline was wearing off enough that I was finally beginning to feel drained. I was shocked the moment I saw my face on TV. Even more so when I checked my video an hour after it was made public and found it was still up. Why hadn't they taken it down yet? Surely they knew about it.
"You're gonna get frown lines," Trina told me from the other couch.
I touched my face instinctively. "I'm too young for that. Besides, I wasn't frowning that hard."
She rolled her eyes. "Today is tomorrow's history, which means you'll have them when you're older if you don't stop."
I pressed my lips together, fighting the urge to roll my eyes back at her. "Do you want me to tell you why I was frowning or not?"
"Of course I do."
"Don't you think something should have happened by now?"
Her brow furrowed. "You're all over TV."
I shook my head and turned my laptop towards her. "My video has been live for over two hours. Shouldn't they have taken it down by now? Shouldn't this be on TV, too? It's a big deal."
She sat up. "I hadn't thought about that."
I turned my laptop back to myself. "I keep refreshing, and searching, and it's going up on several accounts. This is my only video to go viral in a big way, but it's almost like they haven't noticed it or something."
She moved to the couch I was sitting on and looked at my screen. "Give it some more time. If it's all still up and untouched tomorrow morning, something's going on. For now, just leave it. When the others get in you'll have a distraction. Until then, let's play a card game, okay?"
I sighed and nodded. This was a situation I never thought I'd ever be in: on the run from a huge company and hiding in a house full of programmers and hackers that have mastered the art of dropping off the face of the earth. So far, I'd only met Ade aka Poke and Trevor, but there were at least one girl and one guy I hadn't seen. Trina keeps assuring me that it's fine, that they'll be nice and that I'll like them.
Since I didn't really know much about what was going on anymore, I knew I was going to have to trust Trina, and I was fine with that. She hadn't let me down so far. So I followed her into the kitchen and sat with her at the table as she began shuffling cards.
Once she'd dealt our hands, I tried to focus on the game but quickly found my mind wandering. Fiona and Kyle had no idea where I was and Shawn was likely very mad at the both of us. My parents had probably seen me all over the news by now and knew their daughter was hiding from a corrupt corporation. I could feel my face heat up at the thought.
"Liz," Trina said sharply, drawing my attention back to the cards I was holding. She sighed. "If you really can't focus on the game, why don't we just go watch a movie." She put her cards on the table face-down as she stood. "Well come back to it later."
---
Night had well and truly set in by the time we heard the others come back. I was obsessively checking the video, but still nothing had been done about it. The news had nothing, but it was popping up all over the internet. It was my first and only video to go viral in such a short time. I was impressed by the community I'd built, but also by everyone else.
"Hey," Ade said as he walked into the living room. Behind him was Trevor and a guy and a girl I didn't recognize. "This is Adam and Sheila." He pointed with his thumb at the two holding hands behind him. "They just got married."
They shyly gave each other cute little glances, which made me smile. Trina jumped up and gave them both huge hugs. "Congratulations!" she practically squealed. "I had no idea that was today!"
I felt awkward, sitting on the sofa, while everyone else was talking. Like I generally end up doing, I tried to stay quiet, hoping they forgot I was there. I always wanted to shy away when it came to new people, even after having millions watch me and one of my best friends, Kyle, have live debates in my bedroom twice a week.
After a couple of minutes, Trina pointed at me. "This is Liza," she said.
The girl, Sheila, smiled at me. "I recognize you! I love your videos, actually. It's sad you're not going to be doing more any time soon."
I smiled back, but mine was tinged with a little bit of sadness. I couldn't help it - I felt sad every time I thought about not doing any more videos. "Well, at least not for a while. It's nice to meet you."
She nodded, and I felt awkward again. I wasn't sure what else to say. Trina seemed to notice, and she quickly began talking to them again. I took a deep breath and grabbed my laptop from the table I'd abandoned it on. A quick check on my video showed me it had well over 8 million hits, and was actually trending, but it was still up.
I felt the cushion next to me dip. I looked up to see Ade had sat next to me. "What's up?"
"My video," I answered. "It should have been taken down a long time ago, and now I've made it onto the trending page. I think it's the second or third time that's ever happened to me, so I guess there's that." I shrugged. "But still. I hate not knowing anything."
He raised an eyebrow as he looked at me. "The only way you can know anything is if you turn on the news. That's as much as we're gonna get."
I ran my fingers through my hair. We didn't know each other, so I didn't tell him what was really bothering me. "I guess," I said. He pat me on the back and stood up. "Oh, could you bring me my bag, please?" I gestured at the messenger bag hanging from a hook in the foyer. He nodded and did as I'd asked. "Thanks," I said as I opened it, and then felt my heart drop. Inside, next to my phone, sat two cards that I absolutely couldn't be caught with.
"You okay?" I heard Trina ask. "You look pale."
I took the two cards out and held them up. "I forgot about these."
Her eyebrows shot up. "Okay, that's fine. I was hoping you still had them, anyway."
I raised an eyebrow at her, surprised. "Why?"
"I was wanting to try out something. Gimme." She held out her hand and I gave her the cards. "I hope you still have that thing," she said to Trevor.
He gave her a toothy grin and jerked his head at the stairs. "Follow me."
As she happy trailed him, I pulled out my phone. Since it could be traced if I turned it on, I knew I couldn't call Kyle or Fiona or even my parents. I couldn't do it with anything else, either, since I didn't know any of their numbers. It was all in my phone. I sighed heavily and rubbed my face.
"You know, you should probably do something about your hair," Sheila said. "Most if not all of the people who have seen any of your videos would recognize it."
I ran my fingers through it again. It was red, and kind of long. "What should I do to it, do you think?"
"I actually have a friend who's a hairdresser, and she knows how to keep things quiet. I could ask her to come over tonight and see what she thinks."
I frowned for a moment. The last thing I wanted to do was get rid of my hair, but I supposed it did make me a whole lot more recognizable. "Okay."
