The gardens of the Kim Mansion were
decorated with fairy lights, giving the whole ground an enchanting look. Lavish vehicle after vehicle pulled up to the front yard, dropping off extravagantly dressed men and women. Taehyung watched silently from his bedroom window, distaste scrunching up his perfect features as he identified each and every person who stepped off their vehicles.
Everyone was dressed as if attending some royal wedding. Though there wouldn't be any fault in considering Kim Taehyung's engagement party a royal occasion. The men's and women's make-up covered faces and expensive material covered bodies did a fine job in hiding their true identities and intentions. But Taehyung's eagle eyes were capable of seeing right through their
painted facades and see the jealousy and abhor.
Bitterness and emptiness had made Taehyung's stomach hurt slightly. He was regretting having a few sips of whisky earlier in the evening. He hadn't exactly been much healthy after what happened with Jeongguk. He'd been skipping meals and been getting barely any sleep. His doctor had given him medicine to improve his condition. But the last thing he wanted to do was artificially erase his sadness. He deserved the suffering.
Taehyung's bedroom door opened and in walked Jennie. The tight red dress clung to her slim figure making her look sexy. The six inch heels tapped against Taehyung's bedroom floor as she walked over to Taehyung, a smile playing at her red-painted lips.
"Taehyung" She said, touching Taehyung's arm. "Most of the guests have arrived"
Taehyung nodded, flashing her a small smile. "You look pretty" She really did. But Jeongguk was a million times prettier and more handsome than her. He missed being able to admire that beauty.
Jennie's smile widened at the compliment. Probably because this was the first time Taehyung had complimented her. Besides, he had to put up this little act, show Jennie and everyone else that he was affectionate towards her fiancee.
"Thank you. You look really handsome"
Taehyung wore a tuxedo and pants. He had hardly cared for what he wore. While on other occasions, he'd be choosing his outfits himself. This time, he let his designers do it for him. And approved of whatever they thought looked good on him.
He was basically feeling dead. He wondered if Jeongguk would attend. Taehyung didn't know how he'd feel if he saw Jeongguk at the party. He wanted to see Jeongguk. But at the same time...he'd only be hurt by doing so.
Exhaustion weighed down Taehyung's whole body, despite not doing anything tiring that day. There were bags under his eyes but those were hidden with the layers of makeup that were applied not too long ago.
"Shall we go now?"Jennie said.
Taehyung nodded and offered her his arm. Together they walked out of his bedroom and descended down the stairs, to meet and greet the guests. Taehyung couldn't wait until this was over, so he could be by himself again.
-
The moment Jeongguk entered the Kim Masion with Yoongi by his side, several people shot him looks. They were obviously not expecting Jeon Jeongguk to attend his enemy's engagement party. Some people came over to talk to them. When they said they didn't expect him to be there, he said that Taehyung himself invited him.
After the companionship we've buily over the project we worked together, we had gotten closer. The practised words left Jeongguk's mouth every time a question was shot in his way.
Before even two minutes passed since he came inside, he saw Taehyung and Jennie approaching them.
"Jeongguk! You made it! I'm really happy. Thank you" Jennie said, slightly jumping on the balls of her feet. A crowd of people had gathered around them. They silently watched the most powerful businessmen of Korea, who were said to be enemies, interact.
"Of course I had to come"Jeongguk said as she shook hands with Jennie, and then smiled at Taehyung as he shook his hand. His hands were as soft as Jeongguk remembered. His breath hitched in his throat as Taehyung squeezed his hand a little. But Jeongguk soon recovered from his surprise and million emotions on fire. "I wouldn't miss one of my closest friend's engagement party" He told Jennie.
"I'm glad you could make it, Jeon. Didn't think you'd have the guts to come here" Taehyung said, making Jeongguk shocked for a brief second.
"It was a challenge when you invited me, Kim. How could I turn you down?" Sarcasm dripped off his voice.
Taehyung smirked. Jeongguk swore his heart did a backflip at that. "Have fun, Jeon"
Then they walked away. The crowd around them too, slowly cleared.
After what felt like thirty minutes past Jeongguk's arrival at the party, he found himself sipping from a champagne flute offered as he sat at a table. Min Yoongi, Park Jimin, Jung Hoseok, Kim Namjoon and Kim Seokjin sat at the same table. Slow and friendly conversation exchanged amidst the group of friends.
Jeongguk looked around him in awe. He took in the extravagantly decorated interior of the Kim Mansion. The large living room, which was technically the size of a ballroom, was cleared of all furniture. There were tables and chairs instead and in the middle, people waltzed to the music provided by the small band of musicians.
Jeongguk was hardly paying attention to his friends' conversation. Instead he tried to catch a glimpse of Taehyung. He did, sometimes. He saw him and Jennie talk to other guests. Not once did Taehyung look his way though. It left a heavy feeling in Jeongguk's heart.
"I tried to stop her but she insisted on filing a lawsuit. She didn't even tell me about it. She had told her manager and filed a police complaint. I fired the manager. I mean neither of them have any right to file a complain without my notice or approval! I wish I could fire Rose too but I really can't. She had already taken up a role in this upcoming drama" Jin was saying.
Jeongguk turned his head to his frineds to finally pay attention to the conversation. The name of the actress who not onl ruined Taehyung's happiness but also Jeongguk's made Jeongguk cringe and anger serge through his body.
"She had said she'd remove the police complaint if Taehyung starts dating her" Jeongguk found himself saying, before he could think twice.
Everyone looked at him with wide eyes. "What? How do you know that?"Jin was aghast.
"Taehyung told me"
"How dare she!?" Jin said angrily.
"He said no because of you and him?"Hoseok asked.
"I guess"Jeongguk shrugged. "And it's just so petty"
"I low-key wish Taehyung had agreed to dating her. They could've broken up later and he wouldn't have ended up in this situation if he had" Jimin said, a scowl scrunching up his face.
Jeongguk nodded. It truly would have been better than this.
"Taehyung doesn't like Jennie at all?" Namjoon whispered.
"No, you idiot" Hoseok said, punching Namjoon's arm. "He was in love with Jeongguk"
"I know that! Jennie is my sister. I don't like this marriage at all. Jennie is in love with Taehyung and I had no choice when my father took this decision and Jennie just agreed immediately" Namjoon said.
The other men nodded, sighing to themselves.
"I guess there was really no way to prevent this. It's either this or Taehyung would have to build his way back to the top. Which is a lot difficult in this economy. This method is just so beneficial to both your companies" Yoongi said.
Jeongguk stayed silent. He watched the dancefloor as he sippped on his champagne. Only if he could drink away his problems.
"Hello, Mr. Jeon" a feminine voice made Jeongguk turn his head. Standing beside him was Im Nayeon, daughter of the CEO of Twice Corporation.
Jeongguk stood up as he saw her. "Miss. Im"Jeongguk smiled. "Hello"
She flashed him a shy smile. "Fancy seeing you here"
"Yeah. Couldn't say no to Jennie" Jeongguk said.
"Is that so?" She giggled. "Would you like to dance?"
Jeongguk was quite taken aback. He really wasn't in the mood to dance. At all. But he really couldn't say no to the next heir to Twice Corporation. He took a quick look at the dance floor. The crowd was thinning, as it was almost midnight. He saw Taehyung on the dance floor, his hand around Jennie's thin waist. A wave of jealousy surged through his body. He tore his eyes from his previous lover to the girl standing before him.
"Sure"
-
Taehyung wanted to punch Jennie when she dragged him to the dance floor. But he couldn't even snap at her because of all the people around them. So he didn't argue when Jennie forcefully led Taehyung's arm around her waist and they started moving.
Jennie looked really happy. All Taehyung wanted to do was kick all these people out of his house lock himself in his room and sulk like he did every time he was alone. But his plans were crushed as his engagement was hurried, so they could start their work. Taehyung was in no position to say no. Even if it was his own engagement they were talking about.
His parents had left a few hours after the party started, since his father had to stay at the hospital for some medical tests, leaving Taehyung to manage everything on his own. He'd been doing well so far. Jennie had been a lot of help. She seemed to be really enthusiastic about this whole thing. Of course she would, she'd wanted to date Taehyung for the last 8 or something years.
Taehyung looked around him as he danced to the slow music. There were only about twenty people left. Taehyung was glad that this would be over soon.
What made Taehyung almost stop in his tracks was the pair dancing a few feet away from him. It was Jeongguk and Nayeon. He stared at the couple who were talking as they danced. Taehyung narrowed his eyes at them.
"Taehyung" Jennie's voice made Taehyung look at his dancing partner.
"Today was really fun wasn't it?" She said, looking at Taehyung.
"Mmhm" He nodded, quite distracted.
They danced a little more, Taehyung lost in thought.
"Taehyung!" Jennie whisper-shouted.
"Huh?"
"Don't look but Jeongguk is watching us. He's probably jelous of you since he wanted to marry me too" Jennie whispered.
"He wanted to marry you?" Taehyung asked. No, he wanted to marry me.
"Yes! He's still looking. Kiss me!"
"What?!" Taehyung was flabbergasted by the sudden request. "No"
"Quick! He's looking!" Before Taehyung could say no, Jennie was already kissing him. His eyes widened. It took every ounce of self control to not push her away. All the guests were probably watching them.
Taehyung closed his eyes for a brief secon. When he opened his eyes, he saw Jeongguk staring at him. At them. His eyes were wide as saucers. Hurt was written all over his face. He had his hands wrapped around Nayeon but he wasn't paying attention to her. He was staring at Taehyung.
Both men continued to stare at each other; Taehyung while kissing Jennie and Jeongguk while holding Nayeon. A look of longing and sadness mirrored eachother's faces.
Their staring session was broken off as the song ended and Taehyung could no longer bear to stay. He didn't know when he'd break down crying. The fact that Jeongguk was there made it worse. So he turned on heel and walked out of the room, leaving Jennie confused and shouting after him.
-
"Jeongguk I'm leaving with Hobi and Jimin. How will you get back?" Yoongi told Jeongguk as he approached the younger male who was sitting with Nayeon.
"Oh I'll call my driver. You leave" He told Yoongi. The shorter male bid the couple goodbye and left. The crowd had cleared up and only Jennie and a few other guests, who were also talking to Jennie bidding goodbye, were left. Taehyung was nowhere to be seen.
Jeongguk had been talking with Nayeon that he hadn't even felt the time pass. She was a nice person to talk with. Besides she wasn't purposefully flirting with Jeongguk.
"I should get going now. My father wouldn't like it if I was late" Nayeon said as she got up. Jeongguk followed her action.
"Do you have a chauffeur?"
"Yeah. I'm sure he's outside. It's been nice knowing you, Jeongguk. I didn't know The Jeon Jeongguk is this cool" She chuckled.
Jeongguk chuckled. "I had a good time too. Goodbye, then. I should get going now too"
"Goodbye, Jeongguk"
Jeongguk watched her leave. He saw Jennie and him were the only people left.
"Jeongguk!" Jennie called him as she saw him standing alone.
"Jennie. Hey"
"I can't find Taehyung. My parents already left and I really should be going by now. It's really late"
"Oh you're not staying the night?" Jeongguk asked, surprised.
"I don't think Taehyung would like that" Jennie said in a small voice. "I should get going now. Are you leaving now?"
"Yeah. I was about to. I need to use the bathroom"
"Oh, alright. It's upstairs"
Jeongguk knew. He knew the house like the back of his hand. There was hardly no place he and Taehyung hadn't fucked in.
"If you meet Taehyung, tell him I left" Jennie said before she bid Jeongguk goodbye and rushed off.
Jeongguk watched her leave and shrugged before he started his way up the stairs. He found the bathroom, that was at the end of the hallway of rooms. After finishing up his business, he slowly made his way down the hall. At one corner of the hallway was Taehyung's bedroom.
A wave of nostalgia burned through his lungs as he watched the familiar white double doors of Taehyung's bedroom. He saw that one of them were slightly ajar. Curiosity got the best of him and he took careful footstept towards the double doors.
He peeked in, upon reaching the entrance. The insides of the large room was drowned in darkness; not a single light bulb lit up to enlighten the room. There seemed to be no one there. It wouldn't hurt for Jeongguk to walk around there, right? Besides he doubted if anyone except Taehyung and the staff were in the house. The sudden urge to take one last look at the place that made him feel safer than the shelter of his own house took over his whole body and he found himself walking inside the dark room.
The subtle moonlight that floated through the divided curtains of the french windows leading to the balcony lit up the room. But only slightly. Jeongguk took in everything around him. It had been so long since he had been there. But nothing has changed. A wave of nostalgia hit him hard as he saw the bed, neatly made, as a series of events that took place in that very bed crossed him mind. His heart felt heavy by the minute.
He found himself walking towards the balcony. He didn't try to open the window. Instead he stared at the sky that was a dark shade of blue. The moon smiled down at him from one side. There were hardly any clouds that summer night, making many stars gleam down at him.
He sighed, feeling sadness take over his heart. Everytime he looked at the night sky, he was reminded of Taehyung. For he was as gorgeous as the stars and the moon. Taehyung was a beautiful creature carved by the heavens themselves. He was beautiful inside out. How could Jeongguk ever get over the most perfect person he'd met in his whole 23 years of living?
"Jeongguk?"
A deep voice said behind Jeongguk, which made him turn around in an instant.
He couldn't see where the voice had come from as the room was painted pitch black in some places. But Jeongguk knew that voice. That deep, velvety voice that flowed like honey. Ever so mellow, compulsive and seductive. He'd heard it so many times. That voice had whispered sweet nothings to him and also had called him many unholy names. He'd know that voice anywhere. How could he not? This was the person who'd become the closest to him. He'd know him from touch alone, from smell. He'd know him blind, by the way his breaths came and his feet stuck the earth.
A figure stepped off the shadows. Jeongguk's breath hitched in his throat as he took in Taehyung's physique. His marble skin glowed silver in the moonlight. His silk shirt shone like metal. The shadows cast on him only made his sharp edges look sharper. Jeongguk felt as if the moonlight had brightened the moment Taehyung came into view.
He simply looked breathtaking. Enchanting. Ethereal.
Jeongguk was at a loss of words.
"What are you doing here?" the voice came again. As deep as Jeongguk's love for Taehyung. His need and want for him.
He was at a loss of words.
"I just...um...the door was open..." Jeongguk found himself stuttering. "I'm sorry"
Taehyung stepped closer to Jeongguk. He looked more perfecct upclose.
"Why are you apologising, angel? We had had so many beautiful moments here, have we not?" Taehyung smiled.
"We won't be making such moments anymore, I guess"Jeongguk found himself saying.
Taehyung's smile was slapped off his face. His mouth turned slightly downward with sadness. Jeongguk's heart only grew heavier at the scene.
"I wish we could make more such moments" Taehyung said. "For the rest of my life" A dry chuckle.
They were standing so close. so close that if Jeongguk extended his hand, he'd be touching Taehyung's face. It took all his sanity to not do that and fist his hands by his side.
"Me too"
"But I still love you" A low whisper that made Jeongguk raise his eyes to look at Taehyung's chocolate orbs.
His eyes shone in the moonlight. Glassy and tear-filled. His perfect cupid's brow of his mouth was a sad curve. Jeongguk wanted nothing more than to kiss away that sad curve out of his mouth at that moment.
Sadness didn't look good on him.
Taehyung was a happy man. Or he used to be. It sucked to see him like this. This weak, this frail, this vulnerable.
Jeongguk didn't know what else he could do. He loved him. He always will. This was what he was born to do. There's nothing more he could do at that moment. It was his second nature. What his heart, mind, body and soul told him to do. So he did it.
He kissed Taehyung.
