The small boy hopped around happily on the meadow. He was humming a tune as he looked around, taking in the beautiful scenery that stretched far from him. The meadow was a glorious expanse of grass and meadow flowers, grass rustling gently in the breeze. The petite fragrant daisies with their sunshiny centers grinned at him while a soft breeze ruffled the white petals. The earthy smell of grass and spring filled his nostrils. The pollen rich smell of flowers made his nose tingle. He took a deep breath, and giggled, never having smelled anything so intoxicating. The sky was a dome of cocktail blue, stretching as far as to the forest in the distance, as the young boy could see. Every once a cloud would bounce across the heavens, like a flock of sheep. The boy looked up wistfully and closed his eyes, basking in the glorious rays of sunshine.
The birds sang in their sopranos, creating a symphony, which was a masterpiece in the boy's ears. Along with the chirring grasshoppers, squeaking swallows, whirring dragonflies and murmuring winds, it was an orchestra, a masterpiece composed by Mother Nature herself. The small boy's senses were in a euphoric state, almost unable to contain his happiness. So a bunny-like grin was plastered across his face.
In the distance he could hear the chatter of people. Under a tent was a set up buffet and tables and chairs where older people were chatting happily. There gathered the richest business men and women from all over Seoul. It was a small outdoor party where the owners of companies and their families gathered at the beginning of the year to talk business and gossip. He could see his parents, talking to someone. All the men and women looked so serious in there, it scared the small boy. Almost all of them had a glass in their hands, and they took a sip out of the red or yellow liquid every once in a while, amidst their conversations. Everyone was clad in expensive suits and dresses, belonging to brands he couldn't pronounce. He, himself was wearing a black suit, white shirt, and a black bow tie, his feet clad in heavy shoes. He wanted to take them off, but his parents wouldn't let him.
He turned away and he spotted a butterfly lazily flying from one flower to the other. The boy's onyx orbs grew wide in awe and he started to make his way towards the butterfly. Upon sensing a threat, the butterfly flew away, but that didn't stop the boy from chasing it.
He followed the creature but as soon as he came to the small fountain that was in the middle of the grassy field, he stopped, something else gaining his attention. It was another boy, who seemed older than him and was trying to get something off of the surface of water. The younger boy's eyes lit up with curiosity and he made his way to the other boy. He was dressed in a blue suit and a light pink shirt, with a blue bow tie. His hair was a shade of blond, and it reflected the sunlight, almost creating a beautiful aura around him. The younger stepped towards the older boy. He was usually shy but he decided to speak to the boy who was obviously struggling.
"Hi" The younger boy said. This caused the older boy to look away from the fountain, and at the boy with a smaller frame. Confusion was evident in his eyes.
"Hi" The older finally spoke up. He flashed a smile at the younger, who instantly returned it.
"What are you doing?" The younger was curious.
"Oh, there's a caterpillar in the water and it's going to drown! I'm going to save him" The older sounded almost panicked. The younger boy took a few steps towards the fountain and looked into the crystal clear water. In the water, there was, indeed, a black caterpillar. The boy gasped.
"It's ugly" The young boy said.
This time it was the elder's chance to gasp. "No it's not! I should save him. Or he'll die!"
The young boy looked around, thinking, and he ran. The older boy was confused. "Hey!" He called. "Where are you going?"
The younger boy picked up a stick and came running back. He offered the stick to the other boy, who took it, and nodded, finally understanding the meaning of the younger boy's actions.
With much effort he took the caterpillar out of the water and placed the sick on the grass. Both boys kneeled beside it, sternly watching the caterpillar. When it started to crawl along the stick, both boys sighed in relief.
"We saved a life! Now we're super heroes!" The older boy said, excitement lacing every word.
"We are?" the younger boy said.
"Yes!"
"Yay!" The younger boy exclaimed happily.
"I'm Taehyung by the way. Kim Taehyung. And I'm five and a half years old. What's your name?" The older boy said enthusiastically.
"I'm Jeongguk. Jeon Jeongguk. I'm four years old" The younger boy stated happily and stretched out his hand. The older boy, Taehyung, took it and greeted him.
After that their attention was back on the caterpillar. "I didn't know caterpillars had fur" Jeongguk stated.
"Me neither. I think those might be wings. Maybe it can fly" Taehyung said.
"But why didn't it fly from the water then?"
"Because its wings are wet. Even fairies can't fly when their wings are wet" Taehyung said matter-of-factly.
"Oh, you must be right" Jeongguk agreed. They sat on the edge of the fountain.
Jeongguk looked at Taehyung who was looking around the meadow. He had eyes that glowed a beautiful shade of brown and a skin tone that was rare: a natural tan. There was a mole under his nose and his lips were thin and rosy. They formed a rectangular shape whenever he smiled. Jeongguk's breath was taken away by the pretty boy sitting next to him.
"You're pretty" Jeongguk abruptly said, which made the older boy to flick his gaze to Jeongguk .
"Thank you!" He exclaimed. "I think you're p-"His voice was cut off by a feminine voice calling "Taehyung!"
A look of alarm was displayed in Taehyung's features. He stood up and walked towards the source of the voice. Jeongguk followed. Taehyung was met with a woman in her late twenties, who opened her arms for Taehyung to run to. Taehyung did so, with a smile as bright as the sun itself.
"Mom!" He said as she crouched down to embrace the boy.
"Where have you been? I was searching for you" She said, eyes reflecting her concern.
"I was playing with my new friend" Taehyung exclaimed happily.
It was then Mrs. Kim noticed the other boy behind Taehyung. "Oh! Hello! I'm Taehyung's mother" She said, a warm smile tugging at her lips.
Jeongguk was shy but he bowed and said, "Hello Mrs. Kim, I'm Jeon Jeongguk".
Mrs. Kim's face visibly darkened when she heard the name Jeon. But it was soon replaced by a fake smile that she flashed at Jeongguk. Her attention slipped back to her son. "Little tiger, didn't you eat anything? Come with me, there are sweets over there. Let's go" She wanted her child away from the other boy.
"No Mom! I want to stay with Jeongguk. Can you bring us something here? Pretty please?" Mrs. Kim took one last look at her son's eager eyes and gave up. She sighed in defeat and told him to stay there until she brought them something.
The two boys smiled at each other and started hopping around the grass and flowers when they heard someone call Jeongguk. Both boys looked to see who it was. They were met with a tall, unpleasant looking man who seemed to be in his early-thirties. He was handsome, but the scowl shadowed the handsome features. Taehyung's heart started to beat faster in fear after looking at the man.
"Dad?" Jeongguk said and walked to the man.
"Who's this?" The man's voice was deep.
"He's my friend! Dad I finally made a friend!" Jeongguk chirped happily.
"What's your name boy?" Jeongguk's father asked.
"Kim Taehyung, sir"
"KIM TAEHYUNG? You devil spawn! You dare speak to my son?!" The man's voice boomed. He then pushed Taehyung away from Jeongguk and the older boy fell backwards, on his butt. Which immediately resulted a sob to escape the boy's lips.
Upon seeing this the younger boy too started wailing. He tried to make his way to his friend but was pulled back harshly.
"Shut it. Boys don't cry" Jeongguk's father's voice was stern which made the smaller boy cry louder.
"Taehyung-ah!" Jeongguk stammered through sobs.
"Get away from him. His family is a bunch of low lives. He's the one I told you about. The one you should kick on the shin if you ever met. And you've become friends with him! I'm ashamed to call you my offspring." The man said, all the while eying the boy on ground.
"TAEHYUNG?" It was Taehyung's mother, who had two pieces of candy in her hands. She dropped them and ran towards her child. She took him in her arms and glared at the man.
"What have you done to my boy?" She demanded.
"I was showing him where he belonged; on the ground" The man sneered.
"Jeon, stay the hell away from my boy. You bastard. I should've expected less from you. You proved yourself of how much of a low life you are by pushing a helpless boy"
The man chuckled dryly. "It was a Kim. I just showed him he doesn't have the right to even talk to a Jeon. Much less befriend one. Son let's get out of here. I'm starting to feel sick in the stomach after interacting with so much Kims." He said and dragged Jeongguk away with him, who was still bawling his eyes out.
Mrs. Kim crouched down and hugged her beloved son, who was crying and watching his former friend being dragged away from him. She tried to calm him down by whispering sweet nothings in his ears, but all he could think of was of his lost friend.
Jeongguk took one last look at his first ever friend, who he was supposed to consider an enemy from now on, and let his father drag him away. His heart was heavy with sorrow. It was too much for such a pure and little heart to take. So unspeakable words made their way down his cheeks in the form of tears.
The two innocent hearts, pure with happiness and excitement to discover many wonders of this world, knew nothing about the evils that they would have to face. They knew nothing about the sacrifices they had to make for the sake of other people. They were like a lump of clay when they were born and they didn't know of all the ways they would be mauled into an earthen goblet by the society and hatred between families. But for the sake of their families all they could so was endure the pain in the process of being mauled into a goblet, perfect in everyone's eyes.
