CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

A few hours into our endeavour, we arrived at our destination, an ex military base, where we could lie in wait for a few days, unnoticed.  Public access to the area was prohibited so it was an ideal location.

Commander Holland looked around nervously from the back of the truck.  The men in this area were potential chaos assembly sympathisers or would be more than happy to hand over an innocent teenager, in exchange for their own potential gain.

Tom was back in action, gun drawn at a right angle to his body, his scarred and bony fingers hugging the trigger, ready to strike if it came to it.

Briggs lay flat on the cool metal floor of a truck, pistol raised at the open rear of the truck.  Even Jemma was preparing, drawing her high powered pistol from the waistband of her trousers.  Nicolas sill did not draw his revolver.

Then, a truck exploded.   A gang of soldiers, about 30 in total, had advanced on the group, and so the fighting began.  The remaining trucks formed a barricade around the GTR, shielding Nicolas from enemy fire.

I ran towards Tom, i wasn't letting him get involved in this.  I dragged him behind the armoured GTR where Jemma lay, panicked by the sound of ricocheting bullets.  Tom crouched low to the side of the car and pressed the stock of his M-16 to his shoulder, flipping the safety switch off.  Gunfire erupted all around us, the muzzle flashes in the distance contrasting with the greyed tarmac of the roads and military hangers.

I saw a gas mask soldier in an altercation with Holland and was immediately relieved when Holland shot the man, staggering backwards into the dirt, blood oozing from the shot to his stomach.  It was only now that i drew my revolver, and as I did so I saw that Briggs was surrounded by three assembly members.  I looked over at Jemma and we looked over the hood of the car, firing into the bodies of the gas mask men.  The shots sailed through the air and the recoil knocked me backwards.  The sounds of a low male scream, suggested that one of us had succeeded.  Briggs gave us a thumbs up  and returned into battle.  On the horizon i saw countless trucks approaching.  We were surrounded.

Holland POV

This was only the beginning.  I seen the trucks coming.  I pushed forward, emptying my rifle into a group of assembly members converging on our men.  Briggs was outnumbered a few short seconds ago, was she alive?  Of course she was, I told myself,  besides the alternative was too terrible to imagine.  I waved to a group of men to engage and we opened fire upon the enemy.  One of our men broke ranks and started to run towards the Chaos Assembly members in front of us.  I screamed at him to return to his positions, but it was too late, the man was shot in the head.  He fell to the group, blood gushing over the blackened tarmac.

I took cover behind a car and ordered an immediate evacuation.  It would take a while however as the right arm only had around half a dozen aircraft at its disposal.   I broke cover and the remaining men followed suit, firing at the soldiers we were facing.  A few of them fell, but more kept coming.  I then ordered the entire of the remaining forces to meet at our position.  This was going to be a long fight.  The sound of gunfire increased and an engine noise could be heard.

The trucks had arrived.
