Chapter 2 - The Hunt Begin
"Edward, the name also suits your appearance."
Edward smiled and bowed his head after hearing the compliment.
"Thank you."
The pharmacy owner also smiled and replied:
"Upstairs there is a small loft and a single bed that you can use temporarily if you don't mind."
Edward nodded and bowed in thanks.
"That's great, thank you very much."
"If you feel tired, you can rest first. I still have work to do." The pharmacy owner said:
Just as the young man was about to go upstairs, a woman's screams were heard outside, followed by the sound of a crowd screaming something like:
"Kill that beast!"
The screams outside again attracted the attention of Edward and the pharmacy owner, but this time instead of standing and watching, the young man decided to step outside to see the situation. When he was about to open the door, he was shocked. The pharmacy owner stopped him.
"Are you going out?"
"Yeah, I wanted to go out there and see what was going on."
As soon as he opened the door, he was pulled back by the pharmacy owner and asked:
"Are you planning to go out without anything to protect yourself?"
Edward nodded decisively, the pharmacy owner could only sigh and try to advise the young man to think again because the streets of Central Lisbeth at night were really dangerous, but the young man still kept his decision. Seeing that, he immediately said:
"If you're so determined then I won't stop you anymore, but I want to ask you one last time..."
Edward looked at the old man, then he ask Edward:
"Are you sure about your decision?"
Edward still nodded, as if knowing that he could not change the young man's mind. The pharmacy owner asked him to wait. He went to an old table near the corner of the wall, took out a delicately crafted pistol from the drawer. and five silver-plated bullets. He gave them the boy and said:
"I hope they help you out there, Edward. And think carefully when using them."
Edward took the gun and bullets given by the pharmacy owner, looked at the pharmacy owner with a curious expression and asked.
"Why do you have this gun?"
The pharmacy owner just said:
"It's just an old gun, don't bother."
Edward looked at the delicate gun in his hand, thinking why would a pharmacy owner have something like this in his store? And many more questions he wanted to ask, but the screams outside seemed to be urging him to come out. And then, Edward looked towards the pharmacy owner, bowed and said:
"Thank you so much for everything, I hope we can meet again one day soon."
The pharmacy owner also said one last hello before standing and watching Edward open the door and walk out. At this moment, Central Lisbeth was covered by darkness and only the moonlight shined down from above.
Edward followed the sound and returned to the carriage he had seen earlier in the afternoon, with in the distance the torches shining on the dark road leading deep into Central Lisbeth. Edward followed those torches until he saw a large light source in the distance. As he approached that place, his face showed shock, a group of people, some are normal, some have bandages on their bodies standing around a giant funeral pyre in the middle of the street. On that funeral pyre was the body of a giant beast larger than any he had ever seen, with horns growing from its skull and thick fur all over its body.
Now that beast is just a corpse hanging on a cross on a funeral pyre. Edward noticed that there was a gate leading to the central square behind the beast, so Edward sneaked through the crowd of people gently and approached the gate. Once at the gate, Edward realized it could only be opened with the lever on the other side of the gate.
Suddenly, from afar, a man with an ax dragging on the ground walked quickly forward, raised a torch high towards him and shouted loudly:
"Over here!... An foreigner !... Yes, it's you!... Disgusting thing!..."
Immediately after the insults, the man rushed to swing an ax at Edward, but luckily he avoided it. Seeing a foreigner dodge, the other guy attacked even more fiercely and crazily and even attacked with the torch in his hand. The more Edward was attacked by the other man, the more cornered he became, which left him with a choice: kill the other man to live or be killed by him. Edward avoided it and thought:
"Should I shoot him, Is that a wise choice?"
Edward is trying to find a way out of this trouble so as not to harm others. While still trying to dodge the ax blows that kept coming, Edward was accidentally slashed on his left hand, blood gushed out, running down his hand. Edward lost his balance and fell,
The painful fall made him tighten his grip on the gun he was holding. And then instinctively, he pointed the gun at the man and opened fire to save his life. The silver-plated bullet passed through the man's skull, blood splattered on Edward's face and the other man fell on the ground, his body no longer breathing.
He looked blankly at the still warm body in front of him, still muttering:
"I... really killed someone..."
The gunshot had just alerted two other men to rush to Edward's place and scream contemptuous words. Edward tried to get up and run away, but the pain in his left arm was so sharp that Edward gritted his teeth in pain and his legs no longer had the strength to continue. At this point, Edward had no choice but to defeat the other two men to continue living.
So Edward lured the other two guys closer to an alley to avoid the crowd and also to find a way to take down these two guys with the least casualties, but the alley was a dead end, there was no other way, he took a deep breath. Breathe deeply, aim accurately. And after two shots, there were only two lifeless bodies left on the cold ground.
"A doctor and yet...murder...?"
Edward knelt before the two corpses he had killed, his heart stirred because one night he had taken three lives that he did not know. Being a doctor but taking the lives of others is no different from a murderer. killer masquerading as a doctor. But now Edward doesn't have enough time to question himself,
The others started looking for him and the wound on his left arm needed to be treated before things got worse. Edward dragged his body out of the damp alley, his body covered in blood, his glasses were broken from the fall earlier, but due to too much blood loss, Edward could no longer see everything clearly.
Edward walked unsteadily, then fell again, then got up again and continued walking. Edward's eyes could now only see the surrounding things dimly, but then Edward saw that there was a house nearby that still had lights on, so Edward approached and knocked on the door hoping that the people in the house could help him:
"Knock!...Cock!"
After knocking on the door, a woman's sharp voice rang out:
"Who is it?"
"Hello ma'am...can you please...*cough* help me... a little...?"
That sharp voice replied:
"Help you? Are you crazy? Only crazy people would go out at this time... Your voice...A foreigner...Are you a Hunter? Only Hunters dare to go out at this time."
"Hunter?" Edward was asked
"Yes, those who hunt at night, facing beasts and sick people, are stupid people who fear nothing...So.. stupid Hunter...go away for us..."
Then the woman turned off the light without hearing a single explanation, leaving Edward behind in silence, just like what the old man said in the afternoon, "Lisbeth residents don't like people from other places". So he tried to walk away to find help, but it seemed that Edward's body had reached its limit. He collapsed, his eyes darkened and he fainted from blood loss. As he passed out, Edward vaguely heard someone say:
"Oh my my, I finally found you, Lisbeth's lucky guest..."
