25. What are those?
Mary smiled at Evelyn as the two women were looking at the sonogram of the precious baby growing inside of her. They were residing in Mary's room currently, talking over what had been going on and how the ceremony went. The expectant mother was anxious about what her role in the royal staff would bring to Wakanda but she was also excited.
"What do you hope the baby will be?" Evelyn asked as she picked through the baby clothes Shuri had bought for her friend. Mary thought it was too early to shop for the baby, the expecting mother was still in the first six weeks, but Shuri bought the clothes anyways.
Mary chuckled, shaking her head as her hazel eyes were still focused on the sonogram of her baby, "If i'm being honest, i want a boy." She says.
"A little Sergeant Barnes running around? Is that wise?" Evelyn teased, she had heard countless stories of the infamous trio that roamed Brooklyn from not only Mary but her boyfriend, Steve Rogers. It was still new for Mary and Evelyn both to grasp that Steve was dating. If Mary was honest with herself, Evelyn was Steve's first official girlfriend. He had never dated anyone before her, did he love Peggy? Yes, but they never had their chance. It was Evelyn's turn, the apprentice knew that she had some shoes to fill, but Steve never looked at Evelyn as if she was replacing Peggy.
The mentor laughed, nodding, "He'd be trouble but that's what i miss." She explains, "I miss the rambunctious James that Steve and I grew up with. I love my husband and if only increases every time i'm with him, but there was something about the James Barnes i grew up with, the flirt that he was."
"He was a lady's man." Evelyn ciphered, "Steve was never like that, right? I know most things, but some things he hasn't told me yet."
Mary shakes her head, "My brother was always the one that wanted to wait for the one. The woman he'd spend his life with. Back then he thought that was Peggy, we all did honestly. But decades later, it turned out to be you." She explains, standing up and sitting beside her friend, taking her hand into her own, "And i couldn't be happier."
The apprentice beamed, wrapping an arm around her mentor carefully, the wounds of T'Challa's claws hadn't been forgotten by anyone who's seen them on Mary's back, but they were healing with the help of Shuri's doctors. They were a reminder to Mary more than most about the divide her family suffered. "Thank you."
A knock on the bedroom door broke the mentor and apprentice apart. "Yes?" Mary called out.
The door opened to reveal T'Challa smiling at his friend, "Ready for you our first official day?" He asks.
Mary stands, chuckling, "Our?"
"Well it's my first day as King, and technically your first day as Advisor." The new king explains with a smile on his face. "We will be picking Nakia up as well."
Mary crosses her arms with a smirk on her face, "Oh yeah?" She quips and T'Challa turns to look at her, holding his pointer finger at her.
"Not a word. You and my sister both will not drop it, we're friends."
"I don't think friends give longing gazes to each other, Your Majesty." Evelyn points out and Mary laughs at her apprentice's comment.
T'Challa smirks, shaking his head bashfully, "You must be Evelyn Erskine." He quips, "I heard from the Captain that you would be accompanying Mary while she resides here."
The apprentice blushes when T'Challa mentions Steve, her Captain. She nods, standing up and holds out her hand. The king takes hers with his own, shaking it in greeting, "I am, yes. Have you heard from Steve?"
T'Challa nods, "Only a little. Him and his team check in when they reach a new hideout. They're in Thailand currently." Evelyn nods, taking a breath of air to try and calm her nerves, "He'll be alright, he can hold his own, Doctor Erskine." Mary hesitates, the two women exchange glances when T'Challa addresses Evelyn with her great grandfather's title. The king notices the change in their emotions, their heartbeats picking up their pace, "What is wrong?"
Mary shakes her head, "It's silly, but my mentor was Doctor Abraham Erskine, Evelyn's great grandfather." She says, "Hearing you say Doctor Erskine brought back those memories."
Evelyn nods, smiling softly, "I'm happy to pick up his mantel. Steve, Mary and I are his legacy, and i want to preserve that."
T'Challa nods, placing his hand on Mary's shoulder, "Thank you for telling me. And i'll do all that i can to help you achieve that goal." He says to the two women, "But i must take Mary for now."
Evelyn nods, "Then i'll be off too. Princess Shuri wanted to show me where i'd be working in her lab." Mary smiles, grabbing her hat as the three friends part ways.
The newly appointed advisor to the King of Wakanda beamed as she, T'Challa and Nakia strolled the streets of the Golden City. Mary had never seen streets so full of life. She had witnessed Brooklyn and it's bustling streets, Malibu as well. But the capitol of Wakanda was something entirely different. And she was excited.
Mary stayed beside T'Challa as the three moved through the crowds of people, Ayo and another Dora following closely for protection. She was fine just walking among the people she was eager to meet. But she also knew that T'Challa was still fighting for Nakia.
"Come home, Nakia." T'Challa says with a small smile playing on his lips as he watches the woman he holds dear.
Nakia smirks, "I'm right here." She states and Mary chuckles under her breath. The Wakandan spy was good at deflecting the advisor figured out.
"Stay." T'Challa persisted, lightly grabbing Nakia's arm as they stop walking.
"I came to support you and to honor your father, but i can't stay. I found my calling out there." Nakia explains as she begins to walk again. Mary glances over at a booth full of children's toys, a golden wolf catches her eye as T'Challa and Nakia continue to talk. Mary never leaving T'Challa or the Dora's sight as she pays for the golden wolf toy and catches back up. Nakia smiles at Mary briefly before looking back at T'Challa, "I've seen too many in need just to turn a blind eye. I can't be happy here knowing that there's people out there who have nothing."
"I agree with Nakia, T'Challa." Mary inputs, outside Wakanda was her jurisdiction while she was T'Challa's Advisor. She had seen the struggling people of the world, not just the world, but of the people struggling just in Africa. Mary knew Wakanda could aide so many in just by giving a little.
The king looked at the two women around him, "What would you have Wakanda do about it?" He asks them.
Nakia and Mary exchange looks, nodding at each other, "Share what we have." Nakia says.
"We could provide aide and access to technology and refuge to those who need it." Mary adds.
Nakia nods, "Other countries do it, we could do it better." She states passionately.
Mary watches as T'Challa shakes his head in thinking, but she already knows his answer, "We are not like these other countries, Nakia, Mary." He states and the women sigh in frustration, "If the world found out what we truly are, what we possess, we could lose our way of life."
Nakia looks at T'Challa, Mary can see the fire behind her eyes, the passion for helping others. "Wakanda is strong enough to help others and protect ourselves at the same time."
T'Challa sighs, chuckling, "My Advisor already giving me clear advise." He teases Mary, then turns to Nakia, "If you were not so stubborn you would make a great queen." He states.
Mary smirks, "You gave me this job." She teases back.
Nakia chuckles at Mary, then looks at T'Challa, "I would make a great queen because i am so stubborn."
T'Challa grins, "Ah! See, you admit it!"
Nakia shakes her head, holding out her finger to deflect T'Challa, "If that's what i wanted."
T'Challa groans, then lets Nakia take up walking in the front as he side steps over to his advisor, "Was pursuing your husband this difficult?" He asks.
Mary laughs, "T'Challa, i didn't pursue him, that wasn't a thing a woman did in the thirties." She reminds him, "And we fell in love with each other long before we ever dated." She points out, her hands resting on her stomach, "We didn't break up either." She teases and T'Challa's mouth falls agape.
"My sister told you then! Bast help that teenager." The king gripes.
"She's told me lots of things." Mary laughs, "But the stubbornness i see in Nakia is a lot like James's. When he was passionate about something, he didn't drop it."
Later on in the day, Mary meets the Border Tribe with T'Challa. W'Kabi showing the new advisor around and catching up with his close friend. The three were currently standing outside a fenced area watching a Rhinoceros W'Kabi had raised from brith. "Is that him?" T'Challa asks as W'Kabi hands Mary an apple to feed the animal. "Glory to Bast, man. Is he still growing?" The king asks in awe as his advisor tentatively feeds the Rhino.
"He's very sweet." Mary says and W'Kabi gives the woman a small smile. She knew that the Border Tribe had to deal with outsiders more than the other tribes because they were the ones that protected the border of Wakanda.
"Of course." W'Kabi answers his friend, then looks at Mary, "He likes you, he's very picky about who he lets feed him." Mary smiles, patting his horn before he trots off away from the three of them. W'Kabi turns around, leaning his back against the fence, smirking at T'Challa, "I see Nakia is back. You guys going to work it out?" He teases.
T'Challa doesn't speak, Mary and W'Kabi exchange glances at each other before the advisor nods, looking over at her friend, "T'Challa, what's wrong?" She asks.
"Nakia thinks we should be doing more. Mary agreed." T'Challa answers, Mary sighs. It was her job to help T'Challa make the right decisions on how to help the outside world.
"That's Mary's role isn't it?" W'Kabi questions, Mary nods in agreement and the friend watches his king, "But.. More, like what?" He asks.
"Foreign aide, refugee programs." T'Challa lists off.
W'Kabi glances at Mary then turns to his king, "You let the refugees in they bring their problems with them. And then Wakanda is like everywhere else." He states and Mary snaps her head over to the man in shock, but W'Kabi doesn't pay her any mind. "Now if you said you wanted me and my men, to go out there and clean up the world, then i'll be all for it."
Mary looks at T'Challa, her hazel eyes wide and T'Challa notices. He looks at his friend, "But waging war on other countries has never been our way." He reminds his friend. Before either of them can say anything more, all three of their Kimoyo beads begin to ring. They look at each other, "You too, huh?" He asks W'Kabi.
Mary chuckles, "Bast! We're in trouble." W'Kabi says as the three answer their beads, holding their wrists out to make one full picture of Okoye.
"My King, Mary, my love." Okoye greets the three of them, "You will never guess who just popped up on our radar." She says.
When Mary thought her first day would be exciting, she didn't expect her first day to be this enthralling. Her first council meeting on her first day was not something she envisioned. But there she sat beside Ramonda as Okoye spoke in front of the Tribal Elders, W'Kabi, Ramonda and T'Challa.
"A misidentified Wakandan artifact was stolen yesterday from a British museum." Okoye says, her kimoyo beads showng a holographic image of the artifact. Mary listens intently and her eyes are wide in shock when the hologram changes to an image of Klaue. A man she never intended on seeing again in her long lifespan. "We have learned Ulysses Klaue plans to sell the vibrainium to an American buyer in South Korea tomorrow night." She states, then sits down in her seat across from T'Challa.
T'Challa glances at Mary, her whole reason for getting involved with Wakanda in the first place was due to Klaue. His stealing of vibrainium was her reasoning for contacting T'Chaka to make amends. This was personal for her just as it was for the Wakandan people.
"Klaue has escaped our pursuits for almost thirty years. Not capturing him is, perhaps, my father's greatest regret. Mary has joined us here not only because she is my advisor but because he is the reason she contacted my father in the beginning, to amend what Klaue took from us." T'Challa addresses the elders. "I wish to bring Klaue back here to stand trial."
"Wakanda does not need a warrior right now." The Merchant Tribe Elder says, "We need a king."
"My parents were killed when he attacked. Not a day goes by when i do not think about what Klaue took from us. From me." W'Kabi interjects.
Mary hesitates, though she was welcomed by T'Challa and his family into the country. She had not proven herself to be worthy of the title she holds to the Elders and the people of the nation. She knew she needed to say something, but what, that was her biggest question right now.
"It's too great an opportunity to pass." Okoye states.
T'Challa glances at Mary, "Mary?" He asks, "You've personally seen the damage Klaue has caused as well."
Mary nods, "I have, my godson has interacted with Klaue in the past on the black market. My family fought him back when Ultron needed to use vibrainium to lift Sokovia into the sky." She says loud enough for the elders and the others to hear, but she was nervous. "Klaue has taken too much from the people of Wakanda, not just vibrainium, but life, valuable lives were lost." She says, glancing over at W'Kabi, "Okoye is right, you can't pass this up. Not if Klaue can be brought to the justice he so rightly deserves."
T'Challa nods, proud of his friend for speaking her mind in front of the Elders. "Take me with you." W'Kabi says, "We'll take him down together, side by side." W'Kabi states. Mary could understand the want for justice and revenge the Border tribesman desired.
But T'Challa shakes his head, "I need you here protecting the boarder."
"Then i ask, you kill him where he stands, or you bring him back to us." W'Kabi states.
"You have my word. I will bring him back." The king states to his friend, standing up from his throne, "We will proceed with the mission." He tells the council, then looks at Mary. The advisor nods at her king, standing up and following him out.
When T'Challa and Mary enter Shuri's lab, they're greeted by the trains rushing by in the underground mine and blasting music throughout. The king crosses his arms briefly as the Dora stand at their positions, returning the motion. T'Challa and Mary smile when they see Shuri and Evelyn standing beside each other.
Shuri bows teasingly, "My King."
"Stop it." T'Challa teases back, the two exchanging their sibling handshake before Shuri turns to lead the way down through her lab.
Mary smiles at Evelyn as the woman walks beside her mentor, "I've already sent a car ahead to Busan for you." Shuri states as they walk down the spiral ramp, "Who are you taking with you to Korea?"
T'Challa clasps his hands behind his back, "Okoye, Nakia as well, and Mary."
Mary widens her eyes and Shuri looks at her friend, the advisor having no recollection of T'Challa telling her she'd be joining the mission, "You sure it's a good idea to take your ex on a mission? Or a pregnant woman?"
"Yes." T'Challa says nonchalantly, "We'll be fine. Besides, you'll be on call should we need back up."
Shuri grins, "Yes!" She exclaims under her breath as she walks over to the tables lined with gadgets for created. "I have great things to show you, Brother." She states, motioning to one table, "Here are your communication devices for Korea." She says, T'Challa closing the lid and holding them in his hand, "Unlimited range, also equipped with audio surveillance system."
Mary follows the Udaku siblings as she looks around the lab. She had been to Shuri's lab multiple times but never looked around, always wanting to just be with her husband. "Tony would love this." She mumbles under her breath.
"Check these out." Shuri states, drawing Mary's attention back on her. The princess picks up a device on the table beside her, "Remote access Kimoyo Beads. Updated to interface directly with my sand table."
"Ah.. And what are these?" T'Challa asks but Mary can see Shuri is interested in something completely different.
"The real question is, what are those?" She shouts the last bit, motioning to her brother's shoes. T'Challa, Mary and Evelyn laugh at the teenager, "Why do you have your toes out in my lab?" She complains.
T'Challa chuckles, "What, you don't like my royal sandals?" He quips, "I wanted to go old school for my first day."
"I tried to talk him out of them." Mary states, "But what can i do, advise him?" She teases, Evelyn laughs at her mentor's comment.
Shuri rolls her eyes, "I bet the Elders loved that." She teases, then smirks at Mary. She grabs the pair of what look to be insoles and places them in front of T'Challa's feet, "Try these on." She tells her brother. When he steps onto them, shoes appear around his feet. "Fully automated. Like the old American movie Baba used to watch." T'Challa hums in response, "And i made them completely sound absorbent." She states.
Mary laughs, then looks at Evelyn. "Are they referring to Back to the Future?" The apprentice asks.
The mentor nods, "I think so."
T'Challa stomps his foot on the ground but no sound is made from the shoes, "Interesting."
"Guess what i call them. Sneakers." Shuri states with a proud smile on her face, Mary and Evelyn exchange glances at each other as T'Challa stares at his sister, "Because you..." She trails off, "Never mind." She whispers as she walks past her brother. They continue to walk in the lab, coming up on three mannequins. "If you're going to take on Klaue, you'll need the best the design group has to offer." Shuri states, then when they are in front of the mannequins, Mary sees the suit T'Challa wears as Black Panther. Her back aches in the memory of it's claws tearing her back. "Exhibit A."
"My design." T'Challa says.
"Old tech." Shuri quips.
"Old?"
"Functional, but old." Shuri answers, "'Hey people are shooting at me. Wait, let me put on my helmet.'" She teases.
"Enough." T'Challa murmurs, glancing at Mary, his eyes showing remorse as he notices her hazel eyes never leaving the hands of the suit.
"The suit that wounded Mary. A bad reminder, Brother." Shuri points out, then motions to the two necklaces on the other mannequins, "Now, look at these." T'Challa looks over both the silver and golden one, his eyes linger on the golden one,
"Do you like that one?" Mary asks her friend.
"Tempting." He answers his friend, "But the idea is not to be noticed." He says, then moves over to the silver tooth necklace, "This one."
Shuri nods, raising her Kimoyo Beads over her brother's ear, the ringing of the beads causing him to look at her, "Now tell it to go on." She tells her brother. T'Challa looks back at the mannequin and in seconds, a sleek Black Panther suit is encasing the mannequin. "Ooh!" Shuri grins at her and the design team's work. "The entire suit sits within the teeth of the necklace."
"What Tony wouldn't give for one of his suits to do that." Mary says in awe.
"Strike it." Shuri says to her brother, then looks at Mary, smiling at her friend.
"Anywhere?" T'Challa asks.
"Mmm-hmm." The sister mutters, the three women stand next to each other as T'Challa kicks the mannequin across the room, "Not that hard, genius!" Shuri gripes as she jogs over to the mannequin.
"You told me to strike it. You didn't tell me how hard." T'Challa states.
"I invite you into my lab and you just kick things around?" Shuri whines and she drags the mannequin back to where it previously stood.
Mary watches as T'Challa rolls his eyes, "Well, maybe you should make it a little stronger." He says, then looks over the suit, seeing purple in the suit now from where he hit it. "Hey, wait a minute."
"The nanites absorb the kinetic energy and hold it in place for redistribution." Shuri explains with a grin on her face.
"Very nice." T'Challa comments.
Shuri backs up, motioning for Mary and Evelyn to stand behind her, "Now strike it again in the same spot." She tells her brother as she opens up a recording camera on her kimoyo beads.
"You're recording?" T'Challa questions.
Shuri shrugs innocently, "For research purposes." She states. The three women watch as T'Challa hits the mannequin again, only this time he is the one to go flying. He collides with a table behind him and Shuri breaks out into mocking laughter.
T'Challa groans, looking over at his sister from where he lays on the floor, "Delete that footage." He states.
Mary leans over to Shuri, smirking as she continues to laugh, "Send me that footage." The princess nodding and doing just that when the expectant mother's own beads ring around her wrist.
"Come with me, i have something for you as well." Shuri instructs her friend and leads the way to another mannequin in the back.
"For me?" Mary asks.
"You're going on the mission with brother too, you need protection." Shuri states, "You had Stark's tech before, but now you'll have mine."
"Shuri.."
"No talking yourself out of it. This is for you as well as the usana." Baby The princess points out, "If you're to be fighting, you need to keep your baby safe." Mary simply watches as Shuri holds up a tray, golden cuffs that looks like jewelry as well as anklets lay on the tray. "These cuffs will turn into repulsers that you used in the past, and the anklets will give you flight." She explains, then sets the tray down and holds up a necklace, a delicate silver chain with a ruby in the center, "This will send out a force field if you command it, the force field will only stop people from attacking you, not you attacking them." She explains, putting it around Mary's neck.
"Shuri, thank you." Mary says, smiling softly and still in awe.
The princess smiles back at her friend, "I promised you that your usana would scream. This is my way of ensuring that."
