14. It always ends in a fight
Mary sat beside Natasha as they were being assessed by paramedics. She shooed them away, telling them that they were both fine. She knew better than anyone if she or Nat were injured, and they weren't. The doctor looked over, seeing Sharon walking with some of the men investigating.
News had broken out about how Bucky had been the one to set the bomb off. Everything was happening all at once. But Mary knew her husband didn't do this crime. He couldn't have. He wouldn't have.
Mary and Nat both look over to see T'Challa sitting alone. The two women sit on the bend adjacent to where he sits. "I'm very sorry." Natasha says, Mary having already said her own apologies after the explosion.
T'Challa looks over, his eyes cold and empty. The loss of his father hitting him hard. "In my culture, death.. it's not the end. It's more of a stepping off point. You reach out with both hands and Bast and Sekhmet, they lead you into the green veldt where you can run for ever."
Mary smiles softly as Natasha speaks, "That sounds very peaceful."
"My father thought so." T'Challa agrees, sliding on a ring onto his finger, "But i am not my father."
Mary's eyes widen, "T'Challa, you can't."
"The task force will decide who brings in Barnes." Natasha steps in. Mary looks at her friend in disbelief.
"James didn't do this." Mary hisses under her breath to her friend, defending her husband.
"Don't bother Doctor Bryne, Ms Romanoff. I'll kill him myself." T'Challa finishes. Mary gasps quietly as T'Challa walks off. She once saw him as a friend, but he believes that Bucky was responsible for the bombing. Everyone did. She staggered, feeling the color drain from her face as she tried to wrap her mind around possibly losing her husband again. She was dizzy with everything happening all at once. She wouldn't let that happen when she was able to prevent it. She wasn't able to save him from the train. But she would save him from this.
The doctor's phone rings, seeing her brother's caller ID. She stood up and walked away from the commotion, to be able to hear her brother better and not to let anyone overhear her talking to her brother. "Steve?" She whispers.
"Lizzie, are you alright?" He asks, "Is Nat okay?"
"We both are. But where are you?"
"Sam is coming to get you. I have Becca and Sam has a change of clothes for you. Things aren't looking good for us right now."
"I know, they're saying James did this. He wouldn't do this."
"I know. But that's not what everyone is saying. I have to call Natasha now."
"I'll see you in a bit then." Mary finishes, hanging up. Looking over and seeing Sam wearing casual clothes along with a baseball cap and sunglasses. The two meet each other half way. "If you're going for inconspicuous, you failed." She teases in light of the situation.
Sam chuckles softly, handing his friend the backpack with the change of clothes, "Thought you might need this." He says, "Come on, Baby B and your brother are waiting for us." He adds. Mary nodding as she grabs the sunglasses from her backpack, slipping them on as she ties her hair in a pony tail, slipping it through the hole of her own baseball cap.
When the two friends walk into the cafe Sam said they were waiting for, Mary quickly ducked into the women's bathroom to change out of her funeral clothes. When the mother walks out, Sam is sitting by himself at the counter of the cafe. She walks up beside him and sits down, her friend slides her a drink and not long after, Steve casually walks up beside the two with Becca right beside him.
"She tell you to stay out of it?" Sam quips quietly, not wanting people to over hear the conversation. The four of them together was enough to draw attention, but they were focused on other things at the moment. "Might have a point."
Steve doesn't turn to look at any of them as he replies, "He'd do it for me. For Mary. And he would do it in a heartbeat for Becca."
"1945 maybe.-" Sam responds, causing Mary to look him out of the corner of her eyes through her sunglasses, "-I just want to make sure we consider all our options. The people that shoot at you three usually wind up shooting at me."
Mary watches Sharon Carter walk up beside Becca, "Tips have been pouring in since the footage went public. Everyone thinks the Winter Solider goes to their gym.-"
Becca snickers, shaking her head, drawing all eyes on her, "That's funny, Papa doesn't go to the gym." She states quietly, the niece of Peggy looking at the young teenager with wide eyes briefly. "He's already stronger than many men."
"Most of it's noise." Sharon continues, sliding across the counter a file quickly, "Except for this." Steve takes the file into his hands as Sharon continues, "My boss expects a briefing, pretty much now. So that's all the head start you're gonna get."
"Thank you." Steve states cordially.
"You're gonna have to hurry. We have orders to shoot on sight." Sharon finishes as she leaves, causing the wife and daughter to look at her with wide eyes through their sunglasses.
"Shoot on site? He didn't do this, Steve." Mary states as they make their way out of the cafe, "You know he didn't and if he did, it was the Winter Solider, not James.
"Mary, i know you want to defend your husband and Becca's father, but you have to come to terms that it could've been him." Sam states as they walk to the jet that they arrived in.
"It wasn't." The wife snaps, "Because he was never in Vienna."
Steve looks back at his sister as they step onto the jet, looking at her, "How do you know that, Lizzie."
Mary sighs, looking at Becca, then tossing him her burner phone, "I've had minor contact with him since Shield and Hydra fell." She states, she knows Steve is fuming as he takes his hat and sunglasses off. Sam most likely the same reaction. "He only calls when he can, which isn't often."
"And he's met with us just recently, Uncle Steve.. Mama said that he told her he was in Mumbai just last month." Becca says, coming to the defense of her mother, "I was with him for almost a year, we didn't switch locations that quickly."
Sam looks at his friend, then at Mary and Becca in disbelief, "I can't believe this. You let myself and your brother go on a wide goose chase for nearly three years, Mary? How could you."
Mary looks up at Sam as Steve leaves the pilot room to change into his gear. "Because he asked me not to tell anyone, Sam. Trust me, i wanted to so many times. But i wouldn't betray my husband like that. And he's been getting better, remembering things more. He wouldn't have done this."
Steve walks back out from changing, his eyes narrowed at his sister, "You wouldn't betray Buck, but you have no problem betraying me?" He questions.
Mary's eyes go wide, "Steve, no." She states quickly, "That is not what happened. He needed to be on his own. He needed it so badly. To find himself again without anyone around him."
Steve sighs, still angry at his sister, but they could never stay angry at each other for long. That was one thing about them that stayed with them throughout everything they've been through. The Rogers siblings would always rectify the situation, to never let things get between them. That was something they had always done since their first ever fight when Mary was four and Steve was six. They loved each other too much to let fighting break them apart.
"I understand why you did it. But that doesn't make me any less pissed at you for doing it." Steve says as he seats himself in the drivers position of the jet. Sam walking to the back to change into his own gear.
"I know. I never wanted to hide things from you, Steve. You know that." She responds quietly, walking up to his seat at the front of the jet. Sitting beside him in the other pilot seat. "But James.." She trails off.
Steve nods, understanding, "So the night you two made Winnie.."
"He told me not to tell any of you that he was to take Becca and run. It was Becca's idea for the burner phones. He wanted to keep her safe, since she was also a part of Hydra. They would've been after her as well." Mary explains the best that she can as she watches Becca out of the corner of her eye walk into the back of the jet to change into her gear.
The brother sighs, pulling his sister into a hug. Tightly holding onto her. He presses his lips to the side of her head, "I love you, you know that right, Lizzie?"
Mary nods, her own lips pressing to Steve's cheek, "Til my dying breath do i know that." She says quietly, holding her brother tightly, "Always my big brother, always my first protector. I love you too, Stevie."
Sam looks over at the siblings, "We gotta move." He states cautiously as he walks over to them. The siblings break apart and the african american man pulls the mother into his own arms, "That was stupid, i hope you know that."
Mary chuckles, nodding, "I know. But i hope one day you'll understand why i did it. If you ever get married, Sammy."
Becca giggles, braiding her hair from her seat behind her uncle, "That'll be the day." She teases her Uncle Sam.
Falcon groans, turning around to look at his niece, "You're such a punk, little lady." He teases, ruffling her hair with his hand.
Mary laughs, "You expected any less? Her uncle and father were both punks. Still are in my opinion." She teases back. Sam laughs, then hands Mary her combat gear to change.
Bucharest, Romania
Steve and Mary stand side by side in Bucky's little apartment/safe house. Mary never knew the conditions her husband was living in. Becca had lived in these conditions once, it made her heart hurt immensely. She wished she could have stopped them from leaving back in 2014. Convinced Bucky to stay with her. But he had already set his mind to leaving when he visited her that night they made their precious Piglet. Their Winnie.
Steve was walking around the room quietly. His eyes catch a journal, he picks it up gingerly. "Lizzie, this was your journal." He whispers. "How did her get it?"
Mary walks over, nodding, "I gave him mine that i kept over the decades, wrote every important detail in it that happened in my life, and a few blank ones." She explains as he looks through the journal carefully. "I wanted to help him remember."
"Heads up you two. German Special Forces approaching from the south." Sam replays to them.
"Understood." Steve responds for the siblings. He quickly shuts the book and turns around, his eyes widening as he sees his brother and best friend for the first time since 2014.
Mary looks over as well, her eyes lighting up as she smiles softly, "James." She mutters quietly. Bucky glances at his wife briefly, then locks eyes with Steve.
"You know me?" Steve asks.
"You're Steve.-" Bucky starts, his voice gruff and deep, sending chills through Mary's spine. She hadn't heard from her husband since their talk close to three months ago. "-I read about you in a museum." He finishes, causing Mary to question why he was lying to Steve.
"They've set the perimeter." Becca quickly states over her com.
"I know you're nervous." Steve says softly, "And you have plenty of reason to be. But you're lying."
"I wasn't in Vienna. I don't do that anymore." Bucky states, completely ignoring Steve's statement.
Mary turns to her brother, "I told you." She quips, causing Steve to roll his eyes briefly at his sister.
"They're entering the building." Sam states in the com.
"Well, the people who think you did are coming here now." Steve states.
Mary steps towards her husband, but he holds a hand up stopping her. "They don't plan on taking you alive, James."
Bucky watches his wife, the woman he loves. He never wanted her in this fight. She was a healer, not someone who took lives. Not a person who fought. That was him. He was the fighter. Mary had always been the healer. "That's smart. Good strategy." He states as footsteps can be heard from above and below them.
Mary powers up her repulser gloves, Bucky's eyes widen slightly in shock. He knew somewhat that his wife had joined the team of Avengers, but he didn't know that she had been given her godson's repulser gloves to help aide her in combat. "They're on the roof. Becca and I are compromised."
Steve stares down his brother, "This doesn't have to end in a fight, Buck." He states, pleading with him to not fight the special forces.
Bucky looks at his wife and brother, pulling off his glove that is hiding his metal hand, "It always ends in a fight." He grumbles, shattering Mary's heart. Her husband had been through so much, and all he wanted to do was to be with his family. Not have to run anymore. But that wasn't going to happen anytime soon. Someone had framed her husband and wanted him captured. But why. What was the purpose of all of this.
"Five seconds." Becca tells her family quickly.
Steve shakes his head, looking at the windows briefly, "You pulled Becca and I from the river. Why?" He questions with urgency.
"I don't know." Bucky responds as the footsteps and shouting become louder.
"James, stop this." Mary pleads with her husband.
"Three seconds." Becca says with sincere urgency.
"Yes, you do." Steve points out. He knows that Bucky knows. But why he isn't saying that he does confuses both of the siblings.
