13. No, you move
Mary silently drove on her motorcycle through the city of Queens. She was on her way to tell her daughter that Peggy was gone. The mother didn't know how she was to tell Becca the heartbreaking news. But she knew that she had to do it in person.
The mother pulled up on her motorcycle in front of Midtown High School. She parked her cycle and walked inside the school. Trying to find her daughter. It was the middle of the class day so they were maybe at lunch. So Mary check the cafeteria first. And sure enough, she found her daughter sitting with her four closest friends and Peter's arm securely around her shoulders.
It hurt Mary even more knowing she was ruining a good day for her daughter, but she couldn't wait with the information. So she walked up behind her daughter, Peter immediately turning around with his eyes wide. He knew she was coming, he could sense it with his enhanced abilities.
"Doctor Bryne." Peter mutters, remembering the cover name she uses in public. The rest of the table look up with wide eyes.
"Oh my gosh, it's Doctor Bryne." Ned mutters quietly while Harry, MJ and Michelle stare in shock at the famous doctor in front of them.
Becca looks behind her, "M- Ms Liza." The girl mumbles, she and Peter both could sense the immense pain and sadness that Mary was going through, "What is it?" She asks
"I need to speak with you, and Peter can join if he'd like." Mary mumbles, trying to hold in the tears that threatened to fall. The two teenagers in question nod without hesitation.
They turn to their friends, "We'll be back." Peter says to them. The group nods in understanding and the young couple follows Mary out into the hallways.
"Mama.. What's wrong?" Becca asks as Mary breaks down into tears. The daughter gasps and wraps her arms around her mother. Peter stands in shock, not knowing what to do or what's going on.
"Peggy, she passed away a few hours ago." Mary mutters, looking up at her daughter and her boyfriend. "Your uncle and I received a text from the home." She adds. The feeling she gets as her daughter's face crumbles is heart shattering.
"N- No.. I just saw her! Mama, i just saw Aunt Peggy! She can't be gone! She can't be!" Becca screams as Peter grips onto his girlfriend tightly. He falls to the floor with her as she collapses onto the floor. "We just found each other again!" She cries out into Peter's chest as she grips onto him tightly.
Peter feels tears well in his eyes as he thinks about the first and last time he ever saw Peggy. She gave him the advice that helped him admit how he felt to Becca. Without Peggy, he may have never told her. Without her, they may not be together at this very moment. He owes his whole world to Peggy Carter. He holds Becca tightly, "It'll be okay, Fia.." He mumbles, trying to calm her down, "I know it doesn't feel like it will be right now, but it'll get better. Remember when we lost Uncle Ben?" He feels Becca nod on his chest, "We got through that, and we can get through this. Peggy would want you to celebrate her life, right?"
"She wasn't one for mourning." Mary mutters, "She felt that the dead were in a better place so why mourn them." She states, leaning against the wall, her hand resting on her daughter's head. "The funeral is in three days in London." She adds, "I know you want to come."
Becca looks up at her mother, nodding slowly. "I do." She says, looking at Peter, "Are you coming with?"
Peter shakes his head, "As much as i want to be there for you, i should stay. Keep Aunt May company." He says, "I'll be with you in spirit and you can call me after." He adds with a small smile on his face as he pecks her lips with his own to try and cheer her up. "Tell her goodbye for me, okay?"
Becca nods, smiling softly but the sadness she still feels is crushing her as she and Peter stand back up. She still clings to Peter as Mary smoothes her hair down. "How is Uncle Steve taking it?" She asks.
Mary hesitates, "Not well.." She mumbles, "He needs us."
Three days later
London, England
Mary, Becca, and Sam stood in the front pew of the church when the children's choir began to sing as Steve and other men carried Peggy's casket into the church sanctuary. His face is stoic but Mary knows her brother better than that. On the inside she knows he wants to let it out. To scream and to mourn his first love properly. Not to hold it in like he was doing for the sake of the public always watching him. The picture they chose for Peggy was one during her time at Camp Lehigh. The same picture Mary remembered watching them take of her. Best friend
Steve sat down beside his niece and her presence alone made him feel slightly better as the bishop called Mary up to speak. "And now, i'd like to invite up Elizabeth Bryne to come up and say a few words."
Mary walked up to speak in front of the hundreds of people from all over the world that came to say goodbye to Peggy Carter. What Mary had in store for her eulogy was something that she knew Peggy would want her to speak to the world about. Not keep it hidden. So she was going to listen to her best friend and take that leap of faith.
The mother breathed in deeply as she looked around, locking eyes with her family before she began speaking. "Most of you Margaret Carter as a founder of Shield, or one of the greatest spies in the fifties and sixties. But I just knew her as my best friend, and my sister." She starts, "I met her when i started working at Shield when i was much younger than i am now. She took me under her wing, and we grew close quickly. My whole life i had felt alone at times, never having someone who i could call my sister. I have a brother who i love, but nothing can beat talking to your best friend about certain things. And Peggy was that person for me for many, many years.
"She told me that i needed to take the leap of faith when i talked with her about the man who would one day become my husband. And another time, I asked her once how she managed to master diplomacy and espionage in a time when no one wanted to see a woman succeed at either. She said, 'compromise where you can, but where you can't, don't. Even if everyone is telling you that something wrong is something right. Even if the whole world is telling you to move. It is your duty to plant yourself like a tree, to look them in the eye and say, no, you move.'" Mary finishes, looking over at Peggy's casket, "You changed the world for us, now let us be able to continue your legacy and make you proud of us." Mary concludes. Stepping down from the podium to sit beside her brother and Sam. She wasn't able to read her face, but she knew something clicked inside of him.
When the funeral service was over, the only people left in the sanctuary was the Rogers family. Steve, Mary and Becca. All not wanting to leave yet. Becca was still coping with losing Peggy after just finding her. And Mary was coming to terms that the Accords were not something that she should sign. She knew her brother felt the same. The words Peggy had told them through Mary, sealing their fate in all of this madness.
Becca sat in the front pew, texting her friends about how the service went. Mary sat beside her as Steve leaned against the pew, guarding them almost. Footsteps echoed in the sanctuary, causing the two women to look up. Standing beside Steve was Natasha, dressed in black.
Becca grinned, standing up and wrapping her arms around her Aunt Tasha, "Hi Aunt Tasha." Becca greeted the redheaded spy. The woman smiling softly in return, wrapping her own arms around the girl.
"Маленький волк" Little Wolf, Natasha greeted her beloved niece. Her heart ached for the family but she was here for something different.
Steve smiled softly, sighing as he began to speak. "When i came out of the ice. I thought everyone i had known was gone. Then i found out Mary was still alive, i was so happy. But when i found out she was still alive, i was just lucky to have her." He mutters quietly, looking at Peggy's picture as he says this to his friend.
"She had you back, too." Natasha says, her arm wrapped around her niece.
Steve looks up, Mary still reeling over the service, "Who else signed?" The captain asked. His niece looked at him curiously.
"Signed what?" Becca asked cautiously, looking between her aunt and her uncle. Then to her mother for help.
"Secretary Ross paid the Avengers a visit just before Peggy passed. He said that the Avengers were now going to be under the supervision of the governments of the world. No longer independent." Mary explains, "The Sokovia Accords are what everyone is signing today in Vienna."
Natasha nods slowly, squeezing her niece in an attempt to comfort her. She looks back at her friends, "Tony, Rhodey.. Vision." She says, causing the young girl to look up with widened eyes.
"Buddy and Uncle Rhodey?" She mumbles. Natasha nods, "Why would they sign it.."
Mary hesitates, "They see the Accords as a good thing, baby."
"But they're not. You said that the governments want to supervise the Avengers, that's not good. Because what if you guys need to go somewhere to help people and those governments dont let you in? That means people die when you could've stopped it. Why would Buddy support that?" Becca rambles, her mind not gripping with the fact that her brother, the man she looks up to aside from her uncle and father, would support something like this.
Steve nods slowly, "That's why we didn't sign it." He tells her. Then looks back at Natasha, "Clint?" He asks his friend.
"Says he's retired."
"Wanda?" Mary asks.
"TBD." Natasha replies, "I'm off to Vienna for the signing of the Accords. There's plenty of room on the jet." She adds, Mary and Steve glance at each other. "Just because it's the path of least resistance, doesn't mean it's the wrong path. Staying together is more important than how we stay together." Natasha says, pleading with Steve and Mary to not break the family up.
Steve shakes his head, sighing, "What're we giving up to do it?" He asks.
Natasha sighs in defeat, looking at Mary but the mother shakes her head, "I'm sorry, Nat. But we can't sign it. It goes against everything we believe in." Mary states
Natasha nods slowly, "I know."
Steve raises an eyebrow, "Then what're you doing here?" He quips.
Natasha looks at the three of them, holding Becca tightly, "I didn't want you guys to be alone." She says softly, kissing the top of Becca's head.
Mary looks at Natasha before she leaves, "Will King T'Chaka be there?" She asks.
"And his son, why?"
Mary looks at Becca and Steve. Her brother nodding in agreement. Mary turns back to look at Natasha, "I need to speak with him. And Prince T'Challa." She states, "I'm not signing the Accords. But i need to speak with them over what happened in Lagos."
Natasha hesitates, but nods slowly. "Come with me then."
The doctor and the spy step into the room filled with hundreds of people for signing the Accords. Mary disagrees with what they're doing, but the diplomacy she had built between herself and the nation of Wakanda weighed heavily on her heart to try and rectify.
Natasha was called away but Mary spotted T'Challa, smiling softly at him as he to spotted her. The prince made his way over to his American friend. "I suppose neither of us are used to the spotlight." He stated.
Mary shrugs, smiling up at the prince, "You seem to be managing alright with all of this." She points out, "I've been in the spotlight once or twice now."
T'Challa nods, "With you coming out as a new addition to the Avengers, Starlight, yes?"
The doctor nods, "That's right. And also in the past i was a well known doctor. Still am a bit." She says, smiling softly.
The prince chuckles, glancing around, "I'm glad you are here, Ms Bryne."
"Why? Don't you agree with this?"
"The Accords? Yes. The politics, not really." T'Challa answers, "Two people can get more done in a room than a hundred."
Mary hesitates, she knew that King T'Chaka would be for the Accords, but to hear that his son was, made her uneasy.
"Unless you need to move a piano." A new voice comes into the conversation, Mary turns around, bowing her head slightly at King T'Chaka in greeting.
T'Challa smiles, "Baba." He greets his father.
The king turns to look at Mary, "Doctor. Bryne, i had heard that you did not agree with the Accords."
Mary nods slowly, "I don't, but i owe you and your nation a formal apology to what transpired back in Lagos." She states, "I was there when it happened, i did everything i could to save the people in the building where the explosion went off. Everyone on that mission did. We never take lightly those affected by our mistakes." She tries to explain, the King nods in understanding.
"Thank you." He says quietly, "I am saddened that you do not agree with all of this. But you came here to apologize in person for what happened. And i admire that. I hope to continue our diplomacy despite our differences."
Mary smiles softly, nodding, "I hope so too, King T'Chaka. And thank you for understanding." She says.
The king nods, "I am also saddened that Captain Rogers will not be joining us." He points out.
Mary hesitates, sighing, "He's a stubborn man. But i agree with him. I'm sorry we can't agree on this."
The king nods solemnly as the overhead speakers announce to everyone to take their seats. "If everyone can please take their seats. The assembly is now in session."
T'Challa looks at Mary, smiling softly, "That is the future calling." He states.
Mary nods, "I'd like to talk more afterwards, if that is okay with the two of you."
"I'd like that, Doctor Bryne." King T'Chaka says before Mary bows her head again, leaving the two Wakandans to sit beside Natasha.
T'Chaka stands behind the podium to speak as the session begins, "When stolen vibranium was used to make a terrible weapon, we in Wakanda were forced to question our legacy. Those men and women who were killed in Nigeria were part of a goodwill mission from a country too long in the shadows. We will not however let misfortune drive us back. We will fight to improve the world we wish to join. I am grateful to the Avengers for supporting this initiative. Wakanda is proud to extend its hand in peace." King T'Chaka announces to the United Nations, but Mary and Natasha watch T'Challa glance outside the window hesitantly.
"Nat.." Mary mutters cautiously as dogs begin to bark outside the embassy.
"Everybody get down!" T'Challa screams as he dives for his father. But the explosion hits before the son can reach his father. Blasting him away. Natasha grabs Mary and a few others beside them as they duck below the table in front of them. When the explosion stops, Mary stands up as quickly as she can, her ears are ringing but she pushes her own needs aside. Rushing towards the king of Wakanda to attempt to save him.
She rushes to T'Challa who is crawling to his father, "Prince T'Challa!" She exclaims, assessing him. Cuts on his face and hands, most likely some of his other body parts. But he holds his father's body closely.
"Baba!" He screams out in agony. Mary checks the king's pulse, but doesn't find one. Tears well in her eyes as she looks at the prince. He rocks his father in his arms as tears stream down his face. All Mary can do is watch.
The doctor doesn't want to leave the Wakandans, but she knows she should check the others in the room. She rests her hand on T'Challa's shoulder, "I am so sorry." She mumbled to him, "I wish i could do more."
The Prince, now King T'Challa doesn't hear her. His ears ring and his cries drown out anything else he could hear.
Mary looks back at Natasha, seeing soot on her face but other than that she's okay. She walks up to her friend, assessing her as she says, "What the hell just happened?"
Natasha shakes her head, her own self in disbelief, "I don't know."
