10. Avengers...

When the small carrier reached the Helicarrier, Mary had already called ahead to prep an O.R, get a medical team on stand by and everything else she would need for surgery.

The staff lay Pietro's body on the roll away bed, Mary leads them to the O.R. room, she looks Pietro over, seeing the work she had done on the way to the helicarrier, but also noticing that his pulse was still there. Pietro Maximoff was still alive. "Stay with me, Pietro." Mary commands the teenager.

Mary glances back just as the team walks into the room. The mother's eyes connect with Wanda's. The sister's face gripped with fear and heartbreak as the door closes to the O.R. room.

Ten hours. That's how long it took Mary to get each bullet out of Pietro, to sew up each hole in his body. The doctor was exhausted, but satisfied. Almost satisfied anyways. The doctor was still in hew uniform from the battle as she walked out of the O.R for the first time in close to twelve hours. All eyes were on her when she walked into the room where all of the team was. Wanda was gently woken up by Steve as he helped her onto her feet.

Wanda looked up, her eyes widening, "Pietro?" She sputters out, still bleary eyed from just having woken up, but concerned for her only family.

Mary smiles softly, "Will make a full recovery." She says, but the hurt in her eyes tells her brother that there's more.

"But.." Steve says, insisting his sister to continue.

"But he's in a coma. And i don't know when he'll wake up." Mary finishes, looking at Wanda, "I did everything that i could. I promise you that i did."

Wanda's eyes fill with tears as she nods, taking in the information, "You saved him. Without you, he may not be here today."

Mary smiles softly, wrapping her arms tightly around the twin, "Thank you." She whispers, her eyes landing on her brother and son. Both of them waiting for her, but Steve steps aside, letting Tony walk over to them.

"Mind if i steal my Mom?" He asks Wanda, she shakes her head, walking off. Tony turns to his mother, smiling softly. The strange feeling of calling Mary his mother is odd, but it seems right to him. She was the one to raise him, while he'll always love her biological mother, Maria, Mary was the one who made it a point to be at every school function he had, every sick day he had. She was there right beside him, taking care of him. When he lost his parents in 1991, Mary was there beside him at the moment she told him, at the funeral, and at everything afterwards. She helped him when he was adjusting to being the CEO of Stark Industries. Mary was there when he was kidnapped in 2008 and stuck by him during his bad years when he thought that he deserved to be alone.

Mary Elizabeth Rogers-Barnes was Tony's mother. And he knew that in his heart, that that was what she has always been.

Mary looks up at Tony, "Is this going to be a normal thing? No more Mama Ree?" She asks curiously as Tony guides them to a quieter room.

Tony sheepishly smiles, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand, "I think so. You will always be my Mama Ree, but you have always been my Mother. It's only right to call you that. Becca's my sister for all intense and purposes. You deserve it, Mom."

Hazel eyes fill with tears as Mary looks up at her son, "You've always been the son i've never had, that's why Howard made me your godmother." She says, "That and he knew i would do anything and everything for you. The second i held you in my arms, your tiny little hand grabbed my finger, i knew that if there ever came a time where i would have to choose my life or yours. I would choose yours." She tells him.

Tony's heart swells and his eyes fill with tears, "Even after my rebellious phase?" He teases.

Mary nods, chuckling, "Yes, which i still think was to get back at your father."

"Oh, it totally was." Tony quips, "I had to get his attention somehow."

"I need to rest and clean myself after everything, i know you do too." She says, kissing his cheek, "We can talk more later, okay?" She suggests, her son nods in agreement, kissing her dirt covered forehead as he walks off.

Three months after the Battle of Sokovia, Mary sits in the front seat of Tony's Audi, looking out the window as her son drives the car to somewhere unknown. She knows they're upstate, where she used to live with Howard and Jarvis, but why her son was driving them upstate was beyond her.

"T, why are we going upstate?" She asks curiously as she watches the trees and sky out her window. Her phone buzzes with a text, pulling out her phone, a smile etches it place onto her lips as she reads it.

Miss you Mama, Peter and I are headed to class right now but i wanted to text you. ❤️

Tony glances over at his mother's phone screen, seeing Becca, smiling, "How is she?" He asks, completely ignoring his mom's question.

"She's good. Peter and her have gotten closer, she's excited for the field trip to Oscorp coming up. She gets to see Ben in his lab and where he works." Mary replies, quickly typing back a reply to her daughter.

Miss you too baby, Buddy says hi and i'm so proud of you for everything you've been doing.

"Oscorp huh? I've had business deals with them before, their CEO is an ass but the company does good work with biological sciences." Tony states as he pulls up to the New Avengers Facility.

Mary's eyes widen as she takes in the enormous building in front of her, "Tony, what is this?"

"A surprise for you." Tony replies, smiling softly as he climbs out of the car, opening Mary's before she could. "We kept you in the dark about this because we knew you'd want in as much as possible. Which is what we want, but we wanted this to be a surprise for you first."

"We?" The mother asks.

"Who else do you think, Lizzie?" Steve's voice comes into her ears as she turns around to see her brother in his uniform, "Do you like it?"

Mary nods, looking around, taking in her surroundings, "But what is.. it?" She asks as Steve opens the door for her, Tony leading the way as he walks past hundreds of people doing their jobs. Mary gasps when she spots Selvig talking to some people.

"The New Avengers Facility." Steve answers, "Made out of one of Tony's old storage buildings. What Shield was suppose to be from the beginning, Sis." He says, wrapping his arm around her small frame.

"You guys did all of this.. for me?"

Tony shrugs, "For the world.. But secretly for you." He states, "You built Shield with Dad and Aunt Peggy, intending it to be a organization to help keep the world safe. The world deserves what Shield was meant to be."

Tears prick Mary's eyes as she looks around, spotting Thor as he walks up to the three of them.

"Lady Mary!" Thor greets, smiling widely, "Glorious day is it not?"

Mary laughs as Thor hugs her, "It's definitely one of my top ten." She says, looking at the three of them.

Steve smiles at his sister as the four of them walk the inside perimeter of the Facility, then looks at the three of them, "The rules have changed." Steve states, his voice taking a slightly serious tone.

Thor, Mary and Tony nod in agreement, "We're dealing with something new." Tony adds.

Mary looks up at her brother, "Vision?" She asks.

Her brother nods, "The Vision is artificial intelligence."

"A machine." Tony inputs, causing Mary to furrow her eyebrows in confusion, glancing up at Thor, the Norse god chuckles and Mary clicks it in her head as to what they're talking about, causing her to chuckle.

"So it doesn't count?" Steve asks.

"No, it's not like a person lifting the hammer." Tony states.

Steve gestures with his arm across Mary and Thor, "Right, different rules for us." He states, motioning his back to him then to Tony.

"You two are something else.." Mary gripes, but laughing at their conversation.

"Nice guy. Artificial." Says Tony

"Thank you." Steve states

"He can wield the hammer, he can keep the Mind Stone. It's safe with the Vision. And in these days, safe is in short supply." Thor states seriously.

Steve sighs, pausing, "But if you put the hammer in an elevator.." He rambles off, causing Mary to groan, face palming.

"I'm surrounded by idiots." She grumbles

"It would still go up." Tony states quickly.

Steve shakes his head, "Elevator's not worthy.."

Thor chuckles, placing his hand on Tony's shoulder, "I'm going to miss these little talks of ours."

Mary looks up, "Not if you don't leave." She reminds him.

"I have no choice. The Mind Stone is the fourth of the Infinity Stones to show up in the last few years. It's not a coincidence." Thor states to the three of them as they walk outside. Mary smiles as recruits jog in formation past her, reminding her of the second world war. "Someone has been playing an intricate game and has made pawns of us. And once all these pieces are in position.."

"Triple Yahtzee." Tony butts in, causing Mary to snicker slightly. Only her son would know the right time to butt into a conversation with a joke.

"You think you could find out what's coming?" Steve asks.

"Give us a heads up maybe?" Mary adds.

Thor nods, "I do." He states, "Besides this one," Thor pats Tony on the chest, "There's nothing that can't be explained." The Norse god says as he walks away from the three, nodding to them with a smile as his summons the bifrost, vanishing.

Mary smirks, "He knows you so well, T." Mary teases.

Tony rolls his eyes, smirking, then looks at where Thor just was, seeing the Bifrost symbol in the grass, "That man has no regard for lawn maintenance." Tony states bluntly as the three now begin to walk back towards Tony's car. "I'm gonna miss him though, and you're gonna miss me." He states to Steve, "There's gonna be a lot of manful tears." He adds as he clicks his car keys, the Audi rolling up to where Tony is.

Steve looks at Tony, "I will miss you, Tony."

"Yeah?" Tony questions, "It's time for me to tap out. Maybe i should take a page out of Barton's book. Build Pepper a farm, hope nobody blows it up."

Mary looks at Tony, her heart hurting slightly as he tells all of this to Steve. The two had talked about him retiring the Iron Man suit to build him and Pepper a safe life. He had gone at lengths to try to get Mary to take up the Iron Man mantel, but she wasn't the one for the job. There were too many things that needed Starlight now that she had been introduced as apart of the team.

"The simple life." Steve concludes.

"You'll get that one day." Tony tells Steve, Mary hesitates when her brother answers.

"I don't know." Steve mutters, looking around, "Family, stability.. The guy who wanted all of that went into the ice seventy five years ago. I think someone else came out."

Steve had told Mary this news around a month ago. What Ultron had told him back in Africa. That he couldn't live without a war. It stuck with him. He had gone to Sam about it as well, the two men had talked about it at lengths discussing what it meant for Steve and what it meant for the future. Mary knew she'd stick by her brother through anything, there was no question about it. But in he gut, she knew that he wanted to have a family of his own. He was an amazing uncle to Becca, she could see the want behind his guarded eyes that he wanted a wife to go home to and children to call him Pa. But she also knew that he couldn't put down the shield no matter how hard he wanted. The internal battle within her brother was real. And it was not something to toy around with.

Tony nods slowly, opening the door to the driver's side, "You'll be alright?" He asks.

Steve glances around, listening to the recruits shouting in the distance like Mary had when she arrived. He looks back at Tony, "I'm home." He murmurs, his arm wrapping around his sister's shoulder, holding her close. When Tony drives off, he looks at his sister, "Ready to get to work?" He asks his sister. She nods with a smile on her face.

With her Starlight uniform on, Mary walks into a hallway, seeing Nat, "You gonna keep staring at the wall? Or do you wanna get to work?" She asks teasingly.

"I mean, it's a pretty interesting wall." Steve quips behind his sister, his hand resting on her shoulder.

"Thought you and Tony were gazing into each other's eyes." Nat quips back as she walks over to the two siblings.

"Oh, they were." Mary teases.

"How do we look?" Natasha asks as the three of them walk across a bridge of sorts to a room.

"Well, we're not the twenty seven Yankees." Steve replies, holding a phone in his hand, passing it to his sister.

"We got some good hitters." Mary states.

"They're good. They're not a team." Steve responds.

"Let's beat them into shape." Nat states as she and Steve open the doors to the New Avengers training room. Mary spots Rhodey as he lifts his face mask, Vision turns around to look at the three, Sam lands onto the mat, his new wings folding into his pack. He had been convinced to get an upgrade from Mary and Tony when he was asked to join the team.

Wanda floats down onto the ground using her magic, a smile wide on her face as she locks her brown eyes with Mary's hazel eyes, mouthing "Cестра." Sister. The young woman had begun calling Mary that about a month after the battle with Ultron. The two had grown close as Mary kept a close eye on Pietro's recovery.

Mary smiles as she looks at the four new Avengers, she looks at her brother who takes a step forward, "Avengers!" He calls out to the four. Mary standing on his right ride as Natasha stands on his left. The sister ready to take on the new world by her brother's side. Her newfound courage coursing through her. She had found her purpose again in the midst of her lowest point. She had found her place in the world and was ready to face whatever the world would come at her.

And with that, Part 1 is done!
It's been a long ride, especially with my leap of absence for several months.

But i'm back! The next time i post will be in Becca's own book titled, Fearless, so go add that to your library! It will pick up right when Chapter 8 of Endless leaves off. Becca is with the Parker's and will encounter her own battles.

I am extremely excited to begin writing Civil War. Mary's part in that will be huge. So look forward to that!

Thank you so much for your encouraging words, votes and adding Timeless and Endless in your libraries!
