A year or more later, inspired by Wanda's distress on their first view of the hostel and her fateful words, Kanute and his boisterous new mates (including an apprentice sign-maker), furtively erected a sign in front of their nemesis.

Inexplicably, this irreverent sign remained for some time, despite the authorities soon replacing the lower lines with their official stamp of approval (although, being a Government undertaking, the wheels WERE slow to creak into top gear).
