ASHTON THAWNE was a prodigy. On the Ark, you need to be at least eighteen to begin training for your future job. Ashton started at fourteen. He was especially gifted in all things academic, so it was quite a surprise when he chose to be in the guard.

Even there, he excelled, going farther and beyond the rest of his classmates. While training to be in the guard, he met another future guardsman; Bellamy Blake. The two boys became fast friends, and Ashton soon had a fast-growing crush on the other boy.

But when Ashton was caught hacking into the Ark's systems and giving away rations and other supplies to the poorer zones of the Ark, he was immediately arrested, though he was able to plant a kiss on Bellamy's lips before doing so.

Now being sent to the ground with ninety-nine other delinquents plus the boy he was hopelessly in love with, Ashton wasn't sure how he'd survive.
