Chapter 18: Matter over Mind

Hello, yes I'm still writing this. I'm not dead.

I'm getting more into third person POV with my writing outside of wattpad so I wanted to try it here.

Hope you guys don't mind.

Enjoy

The small house was alive with celebration, the new year had come and gone and it was a time for the Levis family to catch up once again.

A small, eight year old Seto sat downstairs as all the adults talked, none of this really interested him. He wanted to do something! Maybe there was a good book around here he could read. His grandfather would know. Dominic had retired early to bed, the old sorcerer's brother had insisted it was because he'd been sick lately and needed rest. Some of the adults like Seto's dad Andrew gave funny looks at that but Seto had already left before he could hear the rest.

Creeping quietly up the stairs, he made it over to his grandfather's room and knocked quietly on the door "Grandfather?" He called "It's Seto, can I come in?"

"Seto?" He heard Dominic's voice ask, he sounded tired and stressed.

Seto frowned and called "Are you ok? Do you need any healing potions?"

"Uh- I'm fine Seto! Just tired... Uh... look, can you go get Hunter? I need to talk to- ." He cut himself off with a groan. Seto had never heard his grandfather sound like that before, but if he needed help, he needed to help.

"Ok." He nodded to the door and  turned to rush down the stairs when Dominic called out again, sounding calmer now.

"Seto wait. Before you do, can you come in?" He asked

That was different; but Seto wasn't one to say no to his grandfather. He pushed open the door and looked up at Dominic look down at him "Yes?"

Dominic gave a calm smile, his eyes weren't brown anymore and had a deep red colour. It was kind of pretty in Seto's opinion. He knelt to his grandson "I have a present for you. He stood and lead him over to the bed he'd been lying on, lifting his grandson onto the bed "Now close your eyes."

Seto did as told. In that darkness, he felt a book be slid into his hands. When he opened his eyes and looked down, he found a large black book in his hands. Red runes decorated the cover the same colors as Dominic's eyes now. He felt drawn to it. Like he needed to read the book "What's this?" He asking, blinking up curiously at Dominic.

Dominic chuckled and sat with him "This is one of the journals I've been working on."

"It feels different from the ones you sent my brothers." Dominic would send a journal to each of his brothers when they turned ten. His parents always felt uncomfortable by that, but the books were harmless and just taught them cool spells. He'd yet to get his due to his age but always wanted one regardless.

"I know, but this journal was made especially for you. It's got a special kind of magic. More powerful than anything you've seen. And I can teach you how to use it." He promised, warm hands squeezing the young boy's shoulders.

Small alarm bells were ringing for Seto but, this was his grandfather. He wouldn't let anything happen to him, right? Besides, he really wanted to read this journal, it felt so inviting.

"Seto!"

Seto has barely placed his hand on the cover to open the book when the door slammed open and his father stood there. Staring at the sight in horror.

Dominic glared as he got up "I figured I'd have taught you some manners son, it's rude to just barge into other people's rooms."

"Dad leave him alone." Andrew Levis growled blue fire lightning up in his hands "Seto come here now."

"Seto stay there." Dominic ordered as red magic crackled around his fingers.

Seto sat there watching this sight with wide eyes, the book lying on the ground now after he dropped it. He didn't under what was going on! Why were his dad and grandfather angry at each other, who should he listen to?!

He could hear footsteps running up the stairs and barely had time to register the blast of blue magic that shot out of the doorway and hit Dominic full on.

The corrupted sorcerer was thrown back from the blast and hit the wall, ice quickly spreading from the area the spell made contact and freezing him to the wall.

"Take Seto and get out now!" He heard Hunter Levis yell before feeling his dad scoop him up in his arms and carry down the stairs.

That was the last time he saw Dominic for a long time. Only when he was older did he learn the truth. How dark magic had infected his grandfather and turned him into a shell of who he once was.

As much as he hated what he'd become, he really hoped the Dominic he once knew and loved had found peace in death.

Seto paced the length of the library in a panic. He'd not slept since he woke in the archives with Jason there. That was three days ago.

He attacked Jason. He attacked him! Every single fear he had about this magic was coming true! And he still didn't even know anything about it! Where it came from, what it wanted with him.  He understood now how hard this must have been for his grandfather now.

He was at least thankful Jason's affiliation with the Wither had protected him. Did that mean Adam and Ty would protected as well? He hoped so.

And Jason, he was having problems with the his wither powers too! Was anyone at this damn base magically stable anymore?!

He'd tried to look into the wither magic but nothing except information about the wither sickness, which wasn't exactly useful now.

Jason had gone down to the archives last night and grabbed the open journal about the end. The two  had been careful to make sure Seto never touched or read the book. Jason just read out the runes and Seto translated for him.

It seemed the spell would work, but the portal would have to be kept open. If it closed, it wouldn't be able to be opened again for a year at least. It took a lot of magic to open and even more to sustain it.

Jason told Seto they would tell the team everything later on today, and he meant everything.

The thought terrified Seto. What would they say?! He'd kept such important information hidden from them. Well, he hadn't even known about the portal until recently, but regardless, he didn't tell them. And what would they say about the corruption? He hoped they would still trust him after.... after...

Seto felt dizzy. Really dizzy. The ground beneath him was swaying and he felt so tired. He felt a dull pain in his arms as he stumbled back against the bookcase behind him and looked down at his hands.

All he could really see through his blurry visions was his arms and hands glowing red.

"Seto the others are just going to training. We can talk to them af- Seto!"

Seto felt arms around him as Jason tried to hold him steady. He just felt so tired. He needed sleep, the need was drowning out the pain and the fear. A small nap wouldn't hurt anyone.

"Seto, come on, stay with me!" Jason yelled, shaking his friend to try and keep him awake. He didn't respond however, eyes fluttering and his legs buckling under his weight, forcing Jason to catch him.

Seto was just left to watch his world fade to a comforting black and red as Jason yelled for a doctor.

Then he felt nothing.

Theories? Predictions? I'm eager to hear them.

No you can't give yours Jade. :]
