Final Chapter
A woman began to walk down the stairs toward us. Her hand over her mouth as she continuously coughed. As she walked down the steps, a feeling of familiarity came over me. I know her from somewhere. I've... seen her from somewhere. But I can't think of her name. Immediately, I turn to Terrance and Aneira.
"She looks familiar you guys. Have we seen her from somewhere?" I ask.
"yeah, you remember the painting we saw earlier?" Aneira asked. Quickly, I nod. I remember the painting, but not the name unfortunately.
"Yes, but I don't know her name."
"It's not surprising my beloved. After all, you haven't been here that long. Her name's Melissa Smith." That's right! Yes, I remember Aneira talking to me about her. She was a recluse that lived in this mansion. She never came out. According to Aneira, she sent her servants if she needed something. So that's Melissa Smith. But what's wrong with her? She's coughing a lot. Could she be infected? Suddenly, the woman speaks.
"YOU! You invade my island! You attacked it! Infected it! You will..." A ear-piercing scream suddenly came from Melissa. Her whole body buckled, falling to her knees. The urge to run over to her began to surface. I have to help her! My feet start to race towards her. I need to get to her! Suddenly, a gentle yet firm hand grabbed my shoulder and pulled me back. What the...?! Let me go! I struggled against the hands grasp but it wouldn't let me go. Immediately, my eyes looked towards Terrance. Anger began to roar from the depths of my soul.
"Let me go Terrance!" I said, venom seeping into my voice. Terrance shook his head.
"I'm sorry my beloved. But I can't do that. You'll put yourself in great danger if you go over there."
"I don't care! We have to help her! Please let me help her Terrance!" Terrance again shook his head. He opens his mouth to speak. But before he can, Aneira beats him to it.
"Lydia, you can't help her now. You know that. There's nothing you can do." In vain, I continue to struggle. I try my best to free myself from Terrance's grasp but it does no good. As I struggle, Melissa's body freezes up. Before I knew it, her body crystallizes. Images of New Haven start coming back to me. The monsters, the zombies, and Earnest's body crystallizing. Not again... not again! Dang it! I struggle some more. It wasn't until my body tired out that my struggle against Terrance's grasp ended. When it did, a realization came over me. Her body has crystallized now. There really is no help for her now. Dang it! She's going to turn into a monster! I should have helped her! I should have done something! Dang it! Dang... it! Man! I... I should've... I should've... done something... I should've help her... Now it's too late. Suddenly, a pair of arms coiled around my shoulders. Their gentle embrace giving me a hug. Without hesitation, I hug back. A soft voice whispers into my ear.
"It's okay my beloved. It's okay. It's okay." Terrance's words slowly calm the storm of emotions inside of me. My fear, anger, and despair slowly but surely began to go away. Before I knew it, a strange calm began to settle inside me. However, my calm was abruptly shattered.
The crystallized Melissa began to crack open. Pools of purple sludge began to pour out of the crystal. A body emerged from the crystal and locked eyes with us. Then, with no hesitation, stood up. What the heck is that?! I've never seen a monster like that before! What is this?! You know what, I don't know. But what I do know, is that thing must be put down.
Without a second thought, Aneira, Terrance, and I fired our guns at the monster that stood before us. We fired shots for several minutes. However, despite our constant barrage of shots, the monster didn't seem fazed at all. It kept walking and walking. Looks like bullets won't work on this thing. There has to be some way to stop it! But what? Maybe I should ask the others.
"Guys, bullets aren't working! We need something else!" I said, my voice just barely louder then the gunshots. Aneira stops firing and looks at me. Determination in her eyes.
"How about physical attacks then?" Aneira dashed toward the monster. With a heavy hand, she punches the monster back. Purple sludge flies from her body towards us. Oh no! I try to dodge it but it hits me before I can. Searing pain shoots through my body. It's pain piercing me like a thousand needles.
"Lydia!" Terrance says as he runs toward me. In agony, my hand wipes the sludge off me. When it does, relief begins to flood my body.
"Are you okay?" Terrance asks.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Looks like physical attacks won't work either."
"I guess not. So what do you purpose we do?" Terrance asks, his eyes focused on the monster. Well, physical attacks won't work, bullets won't work. Well, what about fire extinguishers? Well, that won't work because they are none around here. Explosives, that probably would work but we don't have any. We used up all of them against that monster back at the entrance. Unless...
"Terrance, you got any explosives?" I ask. Terrance shakes his head.
"Not on me my beloved. But, I could go get some from a corpse I saw earlier. Will you be okay if I leave?" I nod.
"Go ahead and go Terrance. Please be back soon!" Terrance nods and dashes away. When does, Aneira dodges out of the way of some purple sludge. Quickly, she makes her way toward me.
"Lydia, I have an idea. This island is equip with self-destruct device. I know where it is, but I need you to lure that thing towards the entrance. Can you do that?" A self-destruct device? But that would destroy us too!
"Aneira! That would destroy us too!"
"I know. But Blake hasn't arrived yet if he's even going to arrive. This monster needs to be destroyed, along with this island! We can't let this virus escape here! We have to detonate the device!" Aneira said, us once again dodging the monster's sludge.
"But... Aneira, we can't..." Aneira cuts me off.
"It's the only way." But... you know what, now's not the time for questions. With a nod, I lure that monster towards the entrance. When I do, Aneira runs up the stairs and opens the door on the other side. The monster, sensing Aneira's movement, turns and fires purple sludge at her. But it's too little too late. Aneira's already past the door. While this happens, the door behind me opens.
"Lydia, I got it!" Right! I go through the entrance door.
"Are you ready?" Terrance asks, a smile appearing on his face. Taking my gun, I nod my head. Terrance throws the unpinned grenade at the monster. Now stuck in the monster's sludge, I fire my gun. The monster's body explode sending sludge in all directions. Immediately, I take the door and close it just as the sludge goes toward me. A breath of relief erupts from my mouth. It's over! Finally, it's dead!
"Thanks Terrance" I say.
"Of course, any time my beloved." A smile suddenly comes across my face.
"I guess you can say this is one adventure we don't want to remember huh?" Terrance looks at me. A small chuckles escaping from him.
"My beloved, you have a way with understatements." Do I now? I wouldn't exactly say this was an understatement. After all, I would never want to remember this again. In fact, right now I'm making a note, never go on an island vacation. Or scratch that, an island ever again. Never again. Suddenly, a voice breaks me out of my contemplation. Immediately, I look and find Terrance turning down the radio.
"I'm sorry Lydia. It appears as though I have to leave." I see, well I guess this is goodbye then. I mean, it will be if Blake doesn't show. Though I'm sure he will. But if this is goodbye, then there's something I have to tell Terrance. Something I've been meaning to tell him for a long time. Though I've never really had the guts to say it. But I guess I should just in case.
"I see. Terrance, before you go, there's... um, something I have to... something I have to..." Dang it! Why can't I get this out? Uhhh! Ok Lydia, just relax. Ok relax. Let's just come right out and say it! Ok. 1... 2... 3...! 4... come on now! Ok, let me just say it... Ok... and now!
"I love you!" Immediately my hands go to my mouth. Heat rushes to my face. Nervousness and embarrassment go through my body like a tidal wave. Man! I really shouldn't have said it like that! I said it way too loud! Not to mention too fast! Oh no, what will Terrance think? I shouldn't have just blurted it out like that! Man! Immediately Terrance bursts out laughing. Laughing? What so funny?! Here I am just admitted my feelings for him, then he laughs! Are you kidding me?!
"My beloved, it took you long enough. Here I thought you would never say it! I love you too Lydia. With all my heart." More heat rushes to my face. My mouth goes to speak but without warning, a voice cuts me off.
"WARNING! WARNING! THE SELF-DESTRUCT HAS BEEN ACTIVATED! ALL PERSONNEL MUST EVACUATE WITHIN FIVE MINUTES!" Five minutes? I have to go!
"Terrance... I'm uh... sorry but I have to go. Please..." Suddenly, a loud sound blocks out my voice. Looking up, I see a red helicopter fly to the roof. Is that Blake? Yes! We're saved!
"I hope to see you again my beloved."
"You too, Terrance." With that, I go back and find Aneira. Her and I ran and found ourselves on the helipad.
"Over here! Get in!" A guy said from the helicopter. Aneira and I run and get on. When we do, the chopper takes off. Aneira and I were safely aboard the helicopter. It was over and we are both safe. It a relief to know this. But, despite our escape, it isn't the end of our mission. According the guy who I now know is Blake, the chopper is heading towards Medina. According to him, a "friend" of ours wants to help us with our mission. We head towards Medina, our minds set on bringing Region down.
