Chapter 8: Lydia to the Rescue

Aneira! Aneira! I was running. My feet pounding the ground beneath me as I sprinted towards the garden. Aneira, please be okay! Please! Quickly, I turned the corner and continued to run. My pace swift as I raced towards Aneira. As I ran, panic began to set in. My mind, once clear, began to cloud up with all sorts of scenarios. With each new scenario, my fear began to increase. Please be okay! Please be okay! It wasn't until my feet stopped moving that the scenarios ceased. When my feet stopped, my eyes looked up ahead.

Several feet ahead, lying on the ground, was a huge gate. Curious, I approach the gate. When I do, my eyes search for any unusual signs. I found none except the strangely bent pole in the middle. Judging by how bent it was, I had to guess that someone or something pulled this gate hard. But I wonder, what could possibly pull such a heavy gate like this? Well, I doubt a monster could do it since they aren't exactly intelligent. And of course, no normal human could do this because well... it's kind of obvious. So what could do this? Well, there's only person that I know could do this. Aneira. She must have come this way! Let's go!

As I quickly as I could, I pick myself up. Then, without a second thought, I follow the path. I tried to pick up the pace with a light jog. However, when I tried, several aches and pains come from my body. Well, I guess I'll have to settle for a walk then. Lucky for me, it didn't take long before I reached an elevator. With a simple push of a button, the elevator began to descend. My body, tired from the run, began to descend against the elevator wall. Before I knew it, I was sitting against the elevator wall.

Man, I hope Aneira's okay. Something bad must have happened for her to be calling for help. Man, I really hope I find her and fast. The elevator had suddenly stopped. Its doors slowly slid open. I'm here. Let's see if I can find her. Slowly, my body began to move. With some effort, I managed to get up. Cautiously, I moved out of the elevator doors. My eyes meticulously searching for any signs of Aneira. Suddenly, a gold glint met the corner of my eyes. Swiftly, I turn and see something on the floor. Is that...? My arms reach out towards the floor. My hands eagerly grasp the object. This is the golden knife. Aneira's golden knife. She was supposed to come here and get this. But, I don't see her anywhere around here. Something's wrong.

Then, without warning, a loud sound greets my ears. On instinct, my hands cover them. Man, what the heck is that?! My feet guide me towards the railing. Curious, I look down and see several spots of orange peek out. Orange spots? What on earth? Suddenly, another loud sound greets my ears. A huge gust of wind from under the railing blows at my face. Its strength sending my hair flying above my head. A strange smell greets my nose. Eww, it smells like something is burning. Yuk! I turn my head away from the smell. When I do, my eyes catch a strange shadow descending down the elevator shaft. Man, what the heck is going on around here?! Guess since Aneira isn't here, I'll have to investigate. Though maybe it won't be too bad. Maybe my search for Aneira won't last long. Hopefully, it won't. But then again, in conditions like these, you don't know what to expect.

With a newfound level of curiosity and caution, I step back onto the elevator. With a single push of a button, the elevator begins to descend further. The loud sounds of before begin to grow louder as the elevator descends. Man, I wish I brought ear plugs. They would be so helpful right now. But oh well. Guess I'll have to deal with this. Suddenly, a strange fit of coughs comes out of my mouth. Black dust appears on my hands and clothes. Ash? Where did all this ash come from? I don't know, but I'll probably find out.

After several minutes of descending, the elevator doors finally open. My body, eager to get going, springs into action. I race down the stairs before me. Approaching a door, I open it quickly and step outside its bounds. When I do, my eyes are greeted with a sight. Right in front of me, is a furnace. Its loud sounds and high heat nearly overwhelming me. A furnace... so that's why there was ash. And that's why it smelled like something is burning. But why would they need a furnace down here? I don't know. But then again, maybe it's best not to know.

The sight of a furnace was strange to say the least. However, the furnace wasn't the only thing that caught my eye. Several inches above the furnace was a cocoon. Its round circular features and see through cover send chills down my spine. My eyes go towards its see-through cover. Waves of horror send shockwaves throughout my body. That's... no, no way! But... that can't be what's inside right? I mean cocoons don't work like that! But then again, this one looks different then the others...

Cautiously, I approach the cocoon. My eyes glued to what's inside it. In vain, I try to reach up and grab the cocoon. But it was no use. It's too high! I can't reach it. But yet, I have to know what's really inside. I have to see if it's really what's inside! Hmmm, well if I can't reach it, what can I use? Well, there's a railing I can use to climb up there. But I'll have to navigate through a thin platform on top of the furnace. Well, I don't see anything else. So I guess I'll have to do it.

Cautiously, I climb up on the railing. My body wobbly as I attempt to steady myself. Man, this is harder than it looks! How do these gymnasts do it? I think I now have a newfound respect for them. Anyway, after minutes of wobbling, I finally found my balance. There we go! Now, I need to get on that tiny platform. I must be careful. One wrong slip and I may end up extra crispy. And I most definitely don't want to end up as toast. Heck no! Slowly and carefully, I stick my foot out and onto the platform. Ok, I got it. Now, I just need to get on it. Let's go.

With some effort, I take my foot off the railing and onto the platform. Ok! So let's see what's really inside that cocoon! Approaching the cocoon, I put my arm through the see-through cover. When I do, a body of a man suddenly comes forward. So, there really was a body inside there. What the heck? So this cocoon really had a body. Man, this is disgusting. You know what, I'll just grab what I can and leave.

Let's see here, what can I salvage from this cocoon. Well, there's some grenades in here I can use. Perfect! Taking the grenades, I put them in my pocket then carefully guide myself back down. When my feet finally land on the ground, I proceed forward. Cautiously, my eyes scan through the environment. Their meticulous gaze searching for any signs of monsters. While they search, I quickly descend a flight of stairs. Suddenly, my ears pick up a muffled voice. My head swiftly turns towards the noise. When it does, I see another cocoon. Cautiously, I approach. My fingers wrapped tightly around my gun. Then, with a slight hesitation, I plunge my arm into the cocoon. When I did, a body escaped and hit the floor with a thud. A voice erupted from the body.

"Owww! Dang it Lydia! You could have caught me" the body said as it stood up.

"Aneira! You're okay! Thank goodness!" I said, extending a hand towards my best friend. Aneira grasps my hand. When she does, I pull her up.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Thanks Lydia." I nod. No problem best friend! Anytime. Aneira and I start going back to the elevator. However, not long after we started our walk did another loud noise sound. On instinct, I turn my head. Right behind us was a huge monstrous spider. Its fangs and eyes bared right at us.

"Uhhhh, Aneira...?"

"Run!"Without another word, Aneira and I ran as fast we could back to the elevator. My heart pounding out of my chest as I ran for my life. Not too far behind us,the monster started to chase us. Man, why do they always have to chase us?! Whycan't they just leave us alone?! Running as fast I could, I turned and rantowards the first door. Opening it, Aneira and I managed to get inside theelevator just as the monster approached the door. With the push of a button, the elevator began to ascend back up to the gardens. We were safe. But as weheaded up the gardens, we had no idea what will happen next.
