Chapter 10: Poison

Aneira and I had defeated the monster blocking our way in. However, the monster's defeat came at a hefty price. I was badly wounded and couldn't move a single muscle. But being injured was the least of our worries. The scratch the monster gave me poured virus into my body. It was only a matter of time before I die. As we made our way through the mansion, I tried to tell Aneira this fact. But she was stubborn. She refused to leave me be.

"I won't abandon my friend. Not now, when we're so close to leaving." Aneira's legendarily stubborn. It's best not to argue with her. If I tried to argue back, it would simply be a waste of time. So, I kept my mouth shut.

Quickly, Aneira grasped the handle of a door. With a quick turn of the doorknob, Aneira and I entered the room. From what I see, it looks like a science lab. Gently, Aneira's hands put me down on the floor. When she did, I tried my best to sit up. But my body resisted. Any effort I put towards movement was met with several agonizing stings. I wasn't going anywhere. Suddenly, Aneira spoke.

"Alright Lydia. I'm going to leave you here. I didn't see any monsters, so for right now you're safe. Lydia, I'm going to try to find you some bandages. I know it probably won't help but I at least want to close that wound. I'll be right back. Please don't die on me Lydia. I can't lose another friend." Aneira's eyes were flooded with concern and sadness. Her voice, strong and steady at first, began to weaver and crumble. A single tear fell from her eyes as she talked.

If I wasn't in so much pain, I would have cried too. I don't want to leave Aneira! I don't want to die here! I have so much I want to do. Take down Region, catch up with Aneira and Blake, and maybe one day reconnect with Terrance. I haven't seen him in awhile. He's always been busy with work. I've never had the time to see him. I was just hoping for... a chance to talk to him... But I guess... that will never happen. I guess all I can do... is support Aneira now.

"Aneira... please be... careful" I said, the stinging pains becoming stronger. Aneira looks at me. Despite her concern and sadness, Aneira stands up. Her head nods and her mouth opens.

"I will." With that, Aneira takes her leave. A gentle smile creeps up on my face. She's such a great friend. If only I had... supported her more. Then... maybe things... would have been better... I... never supported her... with Blake. I... always thought he was gone. But... she found him... and she's happy with him. I should have...

Suddenly, a large pain explodes from the depths of my body. Immediately, a loud groan escapes from my mouth. When it did, the door slowly comes open. A shadow stretches out across the room. Aneira? Is that... you? A voice suddenly cuts through my thoughts.

"Lydia!" Without delay, Terrance runs toward me. Terrance? What's... he doing here?

"T... Terrance?" I said, my voice small and weak.

"My beloved what happened?!" Terrance asked, his hand going to my head and throat.

"I was... we were attacked... a monster slashed me. I'm infected you... shouldn't be here... Aneira is..." I said, my mouth barely getting the words out. Nodding, Terrance gently turns me over.

"I see. That's a very deep wound Lydia. Too deep to apply conventional medical aid. Do you mind if I check something?" I shake my head. Without delay, Terrance grabs a needle off a nearby table. Gently, Terrance puts the needle to my wound. A sharp sting pierces my body like a knife. My breath, in response, goes away. Taking the needle out, I watch as Terrance puts the liquid on a glass sheet and puts it under a microscope. Just as quickly as he put it there did he say something.

"How curious, your cells are destroyed. But yet they aren't mutated. But yet... it couldn't have been a dry scratch because I see bits of immune cells. Hmmm, I wonder..." Terrance quickly slides the liquid out from under the microscope. Then sniffs it.

"Hmph, just as I predicted. You've been poisoned Lydia." What? Poisoned? But how? That monster didn't look like he had poison. Oh well.

"Can you...?" I was suddenly cut off.

"I can create an antidote. But I will need to gather a few supplies first. I hope it doesn't take too long. Shouldn't though since there are plenty of supplies here. I'll do the best I can. My beloved, will be okay here?" Terrance asks, his voice starting to show concern. I do my best to nod, however several painful stings erupt from my neck. It's... probably best if I don't... move. Maybe I should... just say yes.

"Yes." Terrance nods and approaches me. Gently, he takes my hand and squeezes it.

"I'll be back Lydia." With that Terrance also takes his leave. Good luck... Terrance and Aneira. Suddenly, several explosions of pain overwhelm my body. Darkness began to surround my vision. I tried to fight back. I tried to stay awake but I couldn't. The darkness pulled me eventually consuming me. Aneira... Terrance... please forgive me...
