Chapter Fourteen

Sleeping for two days straight was very unladylike, but Katherine did it anyway. The only time she didn't get super dizzy and nauseated was in the afternoon, which didn't sit well at all with Katherine.

She was probably pregnant.

But she didn't want to admit it to anyone, it wouldn't be fun having people stumble over themselves to get her something. And she didn't want to feel like baggage carrying expensive cargo, which, that is what she was but she didn't want to say that out loud.

And it didn't help that she was completely, and utterly terrified about what was ahead.

Katherine got herself dressed on the third day feeling better but still dizzy. She didn't like the feeling what so ever but decided it wouldn't be good for her to mope around in bed all day. Maybe food would help her dizziness and maybe help calm down her threatening stomach, she hadn't thrown up yet but she almost wanted to so it would make her feel better.

Jack had left her bed side long ago that morning, and unlike Katherine he was more of a morning person. Always up at the crack of dawn to watch the sun rise on the balcony, always sketching something somewhere. Katherine was positive it was his favorite past time and she didn't dare speak when ever he was in the middle of a drawing.

It didn't really matter anyway because they hardly spoke anyway, their conversations were short and to the point, never hostile just... distant. Deep down inside Katherine wanted to learn more about him, what he loved most in the world, what his favorite color was, why he was always off doing something...

She wanted to know.

Katherine got to breakfast late and was disappointed to see that her mother and father had still not returned. She was however greeted by Medda who was glowing brightly and looked better than Katherine had seen her since they'd met.

"Oh my dear Katherine! How are you feeling today?" She asked patting the chair next to her. Katherine carefully sat down and smoothed out her red skirts.

"Better." She said quietly. It wasn't entirely a lie, she did feel better, just not as good as she wanted to feel.

"Well the hallelujah." Medda said. "It's no fun to be sick, unless of course it's for a baby, then it's worth it!"

"Of course." Katherine was forced to admit with a smile. "Where's Jack?" She asked wanting to change the subject.

"Oh out an about like usual." Medda said waving her hand.

"Where does he go?" Katherine asked curiously.

"Mostly to the roof," Medda said. "He likes how quite it is up there, but he never can sit still for very long. Always has to be doing something, weather it's drawing or going for a run. He likes running, did you know that?" Medda asked.

"I did not." Katherine said slightly envying her husband. What she wouldn't give to get out of the castle every once in a while. She hadn't been outside the walls since she arrived in Central Press.

"I don't mean to intrude Katherine, but have you and my Nephew spoken recently?" Medda asked curiously.

"Yes." Katherine said thinking back to his 'goodnight Katherine' he had said last night as she drifted to sleep.

"No, I mean have you guys talked? Like really talked." She asked.

Katherine shrugged. "I guess so, a few days ago he gave me this." Katherine said pulling out the purple necklace he'd given her.

"Oh what a good boy! I told him you'd like it!" Medda said happily.

Katherine's heart dropped like a brick in water. Wait what?

"You told him to?" Katherine questioned hesitantly.

"Yes, I told him it would be a good idea to get you something nice. I didn't realize he was going to give you his mothers necklace though! That's worth a fortune!" Medda said bubbly.

"Oh," Katherine said trying not to look as crushed as she felt. So it hadn't been Jacks idea to give her the necklace? He'd just lied to her about finding it?

The thought shouldn't of bothered her as much as it did, so what if he lied to her? Their relationship was nothing more than an agreement and a convenience. Still... something inside Katherine made her wish it had been Jacks idea to give her the necklace. Maybe she thought he'd actually cared about her...

'No stop it.' She told herself. 'Stop thinking about that or you'll start crying. Don't start crying.'

Katherine ate the rest of her breakfast in silence as she listened to Medda chat happily about the days warm weather. It was the first of August and the height of summer time, every flower was in full bloom, and the sun stayed out until very late at night. Katherine made a mental note to go visit the gardens today.

"I shall speak with you at dinner tonight my dear." Medda said kissing Katherine's head like she was her own daughter. "I hope you continue to feel well."

And with that she swept away to go do what ever a Patron did. It was probably a whole lot more than Katherine did. Katherine let soon after that wondering aimlessly around the castle trying to find someone to talk to. But like normal, the castle was practically deserted this time of the day, most everyone was outside working. So that's where Katherine headed.

Except she didn't, before she reached the handles to the back door she paused and looked up at the long stairwell that lead up to the roof. Would Jack be up there? Surely he would be off somewhere else fulfilling his duties as a king. Or was he?

As Katherine walked up the steps she felt her dizziness fade into nothing and as she reached he top her breath hitched in her throat.

It was beautiful.

Acres after acres of flowers stretched out before her, and the August sun beat dreamily down upon her brown curls. Her heart raced as she relized how high up she was but her steps never faltered as she carefully walked over to the man leaning on one of the railings.

"You never told me this was up here." Katherine said quietly trying not to scare Jack as she came up beside him.

He looked surprised to see her but quickly regained himself and stood up straight, his jaw was relaxed for once and his black hair reflected light into his gorgeous blue eyes.

"I didn't not know you were here." Jack said glancing around the roof top.

Katherine bent her head. "Forgive me, I didn't not mean to intrude."

See? That's what she got for being curious. What a bad quality for a Queen, her mother would be ashamed.

"No, no, no!" Jack said grabbing her chin and lifting her head up. "It's okay, it really is. You don't have to reprimand yourself for being you."

Katherine blinked. Did the king just tell her to be herself? She'd never heard such words before in her entire life.

"I'm sorry." Katherine said automatically.

"Don't apologize." He said. "Look, come see." He said and pulled her up to the edge so she could get a full look of the gardens.

"It's beautiful." Katherine said breathlessly.

"Are you feeling better?" Jack asked suddenly pulling Katherine out of her admiration.

"Oh yes, thank you." She said quickly.

"Good." He said coming closer to her, one of his hands brushed her hair away from her face and it sent a shiver down Katherine's spine.

"Shouldn't you be working?" Katherine asked slightly dazed.

Jack laughed. "Working? Yea right. Medda won't even let me near her office much less tell me what's happening in the country." Jacks said shaking his head.

"But your the king." Katherine said surprised by this information.

"So what? I'm still only 18 years old, and apparently can't make good decisions. Plus... Medda wants me focusing on other things." Jack said glancing side ways at her.

Katherine let her eyes drop to her feet knowing exactly what he was talking about. Katherine guessed it made sense, but why didn't Jack have any say in anything? Had he really only become the king so Medda could have a grandchild?

"Your very beautiful Katherine." Jack said quietly a noticeable shift in the atsmophere between them.

She thought he was going to kiss her but he didn't, instead he wrapped his arms around her and burried his face into her hair. The gesture was so innocent yet it sent her heart into a frenzy, she wasn't sure why though. Usually she got his way when he was pushing her into bed, not when he was just holding her.

Katherine calmed down and held him back, not sure why he was being to gentle with her right now. She wasn't sure of much, but one thing was for certain:

This was nice.
