xiv. snake in the grass
Lilith loved summer.
She loved the sun, the clothes you could wear in the heat, the beach, and the fact that there was no school to stress her out.
So when Hawk and Jake FaceTimed asking if she wanted to go to the beach the next morning, Lilith's yes was almost immediate.
Moon and Hawk went earlier than they told everyone to show up, wanting to make sure they got a good spot. Jake offered he and Demetri go early, but Demetri said he was nervous to be in the sun for too long so instead, Jake hung out at Demetri's house until the boys mom drove them.
Lilith was Miguel's ride. She pulled up to the boys apartment and once she doubled parked and put on her hazards, Lilith sent a quick text to Miguel saying she was outside.
She leaned back in her seat and pushed her sunglasses down while she waited for Miguel to walk out. Her head bopped to the song playing and when she saw Miguel coming out of his apartment out of the corner of her eyes, she smiled, turning down the music a couple notches.
"Hey, baby." She sang playfully as Miguel climbed into the passenger seat.
Lilith's smile faltered when Miguel didn't respond, his face stuck in a frown. "What's wrong?" She asked quietly and Miguel sighed.
"Do you remember that kid, Robby Keene?" Miguel asked, and Lilith, too worried to start driving again, just nodded, her eyes glued on Miguel.
"Yeah..." She said slowly, waiting to see what on Earth Miguel would tell her about him.
"He's Sensei's son."
...
At the beach, Hawk, Jake, and Demetri all played volleyball while Moon sunbathed beside them. Jake was on Demetri's team after Demetri said he needed Jake on his team since Hawk was so good.
Jake made the grave mistake of letting Demetri serve just once. He figured it wouldn't hurt.
But then Demetri served the ball right into the net.
Jake's head dropped and a small sigh left his lips. Demetri looked to Jake next to him before he looked to Hawk, gesturing for him to toss the ball back to him. "Mulligan. Send it back." He said, his voice having a small crack of embarrassment.
"There's no mulligans in volleyball." Jake said as Hawk grabbed the ball and kept it for himself.
Demetri looked back and forth between the two boys before he sighed, walking toward the edge of the net. "Says you. Water break!"
Jake looked away from Demetri and to Hawk across the net. Hawk raised his eyebrows, silently saying "him? really?" which made Jake roll his eyes.
He started to walk toward where Moon was sunbathing as Demetri dried his face off with Jake's Cobra Kai beach towel.
Two girls saw Demetri and stopped in their tracks, an interested look in their eyes. "Cobra Kai? You guys won that karate tournament, right?" One of the girls asked and Demetri slowly pulled his face out of Jake's towel, his eyes wide as he practically became paralyzed in shock.
"The All Valley? The Rumble in Reseda?" Demetri stuttered out before he let out a nervous laugh, nodding his head. "Yes, we certainly did." Demetri breathed out, trying to seem as cool as possible.
Jake frowned, looking away from Demetri and the two girls and instead to Moon. His eyes practically sparkled when he saw the joint in her hands. He quickly walked toward her, laying down on the beach towel beside her and taking the sunglasses off of her head.
"Give me." He muttered, waving at the girl to give him the joint. Moon chuckled, taking one last drag before handing the joint to Jake.
He put the joint against his lips as his eyes struggled to leave the scene in front of him. It hurt to watch, but he couldn't look away.
"Cool. We're gonna go for a swim, but maybe play with you later?" The girl asked Demetri and Jake aggressively blew the smoke out of his mouth, completely ignoring the burning feeling rising in his throat and lungs.
He pushed the sunglasses further up his nose and looked away to the ocean. Jake wanted to go into the water, but Hawk didn't want to ruin his mohawk, Moon only wanted to sunbathe, and Demetri didn't want sand to stick to him once he got out of the water.
All he wanted was for Lilith to get here already. She would get in the water with him. She would go deep enough into the water with him that their feet would no long be touching the sand beneath them and they'd have to swim underneath the waves.
When he looked back to Demetri, the girls were gone, but Demetri still watched the girls walk away. Jake sighed, taking another hit off the joint.
His cough was low, having smoked enough with Moon to get used to the burn by now. Hawk watched Jake carefully before he turned back to Demetri, his jaw clenched in this sudden protectiveness for Jake and his feelings. The boy made it so obvious that he liked Demetri, how could Demetri not see that and care?!
"Be nice if you earned the Cobra Kai cred you're so happy to take. When are you ever gonna sign up?" Hawk spat. His eyes moved to Jake's for a split second, his angry expression softening.
Demetri just shrugged at the question. "I don't know. I'm kinda enjoying my gain without the pain." He laughed out, gesturing to the girls walking away.
Jake handed the joint back to Moon, not wanting to hog it and looked up at Demetri with an annoyed look. "But if you have to be someone you're not for them to like you, is it really worth it?" He asked, his head starting to feel a little full as the weed slowly started to kick in.
Demetri rolled his eyes, turning to face Jake. "Okay, philosopher. You have no room to talk when you're in Cobra Kai. You could have any guy you want!" Demetri yelled, gesturing around the beach as if there was a line of contestants waiting to get Jake's attention.
At that comment, Moon immediately handed the joint back to Jake, thinking he made need it again.
Jake stared up at Demetri for a second, shocked that the boy was that dense and clueless. Even Jake himself thought he made his crush on Demetri too obvious some times. He scoffed, rolling his eyes and taking the joint from the girl beside him. "Apparently not." He muttered, taking a big hit of the joint.
"Jake! Hawk!"
The two boys turned at the voice calling for them and Jake immediately shot off the ground when he realized it was Miguel and Lilith. He needed to get away from Demetri–even if it was just for a minute.
"Hey! There's you guys are!" Hawk smiled, following behind Jake. As Hawk dabbed up Miguel, Jake noticed the frown on his face and the uncomfortable look on Lilith's.
Jake's eyebrows furrowed, looking back and forth between the couple. "Whats up with you guys?" He asked and Hawk slowly backed away from the two, eyeing them uop and down once he realized something was wrong.
"It's about Sensei." Lilith muttered and Hawk sighed, shaking his head as if it were nothing. "Is this about his rap sheet?" He asked and Jake's eyes widened. He turned back to Miguel and Lilith, nodding his head with Hawk. "Oh, yeah. Hawk told me about it. I had to hide it from my parents."
"I think it makes him more badass." Hawk shrugged out, his lips pursed to try and play it cool.
"It's about Robby Keene." Miguel said this time, making Hawk and Jake's eyebrows furrow.
...
After explaining everything to Hawk and Jake, Lilith asked the three boys if they could all just figure it out after their beach day. They knew how excited Lilith was for the day, and decided on just talking about it the next day.
Lilith just didn't think it'd happen as soon as she sat down with the boys.
"So Jake and I did a deep dive online and you were right. Robby Keene is Sensei's son." Hawk said as the four teens stretched before class.
Lilith rolled her eyes, leaning further into her stretched leg to hide it as Miguel shook his head from beside her. "I just don't understand why he wouldn't tell us." He muttered, his voice filled with disappointment.
Lilith sat up, about to speak up and say that Johnny didn't have to tell them about his personal life, but before she could, Hawk spoke up. "It explains why he's giving us shit for kicking Keene's ass at the tournament. Show no mercy, unless it's his son. Then, we gotta be pussies." Hawk spat.
Both Jake and Lilith's eyebrows furrowed at that and Lilith slowly started to shake her head. "Well, I don't think–"
"You guys! Have you seen the commercial?" Aisha's yell cut Lilith off as she ran toward the group. Everyone turned to fae Aisha, completely ignoring their previous conversation about Johnny and Robby to listen to Aisha.
"What commercial?" Jake asked and Aisha handed her phone to Jake and almost instantly, Hawk leaned over his shoulder to look. "Sam's dad started his own dojo and he disses Cobra Kai!"
Before Jake and Hawk could watch much of the commercial, Johnny stomped out of his office, yelling the name of the first student he saw when he walked out. "Greene!"
Jake jumped, Aisha's phone flying out of his hands in fear as his head shot up to face Johnny. "Yes, sensei!" He yelled, shakily getting up as Johnny walked toward him, a bonsai tree in hand.
"Take this bonsai, stand over there." Johnny said, pushing the plant into the boys chest and pointing to the other side of the room. Jake muttered a small agreement and scrambled to the other side of the room as Johnny looked around for another student.
"Queen of England, start recording. We're making our own commercial." Johnny said, pointing at Lilith.
The girl quickly nodded her head, taking her phone out of her gi pocket and opening her camera. She gave her sensei a countdown before she started to record. As soon as she gave Johnny a thumbs up, he started ad-libbing.
"There's a lot of talk going around the Valley about free karate but everyone knows in life, you get what you pay for. You wanna really kick the competition?" Johnny asked, standing in front of his "STRIKE FIRST STRIKE HARD NO MERCY" wall before he slowly started to walk toward Jake, who was still holding the bonsai.
When Johnny got into his fighting stance, Jake paled, suddenly realizing why he had to hold the plant. He shot his arms out, holding the bonsai as far away from him as possible just as Johnny kicked the vase.
Dirt flew at Jake's face and the boy closed his eyes as tight as he could, but he could still feel dirt on his lips. He tried to spit it out, blinking his eyes open and shaking his head to get rid of the dirt. "A warning would've been nice." He muttered, but Johnny ignored him and turned back to Lilith and the camera.
"Then you need to get your ass over to Cobra Kai. Screw that lame meditation bullshit. what you need is bone crushing, face smashing, good ol American karate."
Johnny then turned to the dummy that was standing next to Jake. The Greene boy had walked off camera and toward Hawk, who helped him wipe the dirt off his face and gi.
Johnny struck the dummy and elbowed it in the face before he turned back to the camera. "Enough about self-defense. Learn self-offense. Don't be a pussy. Join Cobra Kai and let me teach you the way of the fist." Johnny finished, ending the commercial with a raised fist and a smile.
Lilith ended the video, nodding her head. "And cut!" She said, Johnny straightening up once he knew Lilith was done videoing him. "How's it look?" He asked and Lilith pursed her lips as she looked back at the video.
"Pretty good." She hummed.
"Great. Just make sure the Cobra Kai snake comes in at the end, all right? I want it to really pop." Johnny explained and Lilith's eyebrows creased. She had no clue how to do that. Before she could interject, Johnny continued. "Make it chrome and throw 'thunderstruck' under it."
As he started to walk toward the backroom, Lilith immediately started following after him. "Oh! Um... I'm pretty sure the rights for that song will cost too much." She said and Johnny turned to walk backward so he could face Lilith, shaking his head.
"No, I already own it. Cassettes in the car." Johnny said, nodding his head to his car in the parking lot.
Lilith's eyebrows furrowed. He couldn't be serious, right?
"Oh, and put one of those hash browns at the end. You know, like 'hash brown team Cobra Kai' or something. And then send it to the internet!" Johnny yelled, walking into the backroom.
Lilith was frozen. Her eyes closing as she sighed in defeat. She turned to walk toward the exit so she could head home and work on the commercial just as Miguel and Hawk zoomed passed her to follow after Johnny.
Lilith's eyes followed the two boys and once they were out of her sight, she turned back forward, Jake standing right in front of her. "What are they doing?" She asked, pointing behind her to Miguel and Hawk with her thumb.
"They're confronting Sensei about Robby." Jake said and Lilith scoffed out a laugh, her eyebrows raising sarcastically. "Then we should get out of here asap. Come on. You can work on this commercial with me." Lilith whispered, grabbing Jake's wrist and running out of the dojo before Johnny started yelling.
...
After finishing up editing the commercial, Jake and Lilith got a text from Hawk in their group chat that Miyagi-Do was performing at ValleyFest and Cobra Kai would poach their performance and take over.
Even though Lilith didn't like the idea of sabotaging Sam's performance considering they were friends, Lilith had to admit, that commercial the girls dad made was a little hurtful. What had any of the Cobra Kai's done to Sam and her father recently to make him say that?
So about halfway through Miyagi-Do's set, Kreese, who was backstage with the lights, shut everything off, giving Cobra Kai the perfect entrance.
"Cobra Kai!"
The students ran toward the stage in two lines, Miguel leading one and Lilith leading the other. They chanted their teams name the whole way to the stage up until they were all in positions on stage.
As a team, they all showed off their moves; high kicks, side jabs, punches. Afterwards, all the boys started to pair up and fight each other while Lilith and Aisha ran to the wings of the stage where both Johnny and Kreese were waiting for them with blindfolds.
"You two ready two ready?" Johnny asked as Aisha stood in front of him so he could tie the blindfold around her head while Lilith stood in front of Kreese so he could do the same to her.
Lilith let out a nervous breath, bouncing on her toes. "A little nervous I'll miss the boards and embarrass myself in front of everyone but hey, what are you gonna do about it?" She said, trying to sound lighthearted but the three around her could hear the nervousness in her voice.
Kreese pressed a hand on Lilith's shoulder, stopping her from bouncing and making her turn around to face him. "Sensei Lawrence and I made sure you and Miss Robinson have everything you need to hit those boards." He said and Johnny snickered, tying the headband around Aisha's head.
"Yeah, check this out." Johnny hummed as Kreese wrapped the headband around Lilith's head.
"Woah..." The two girls breathed out. With the blindfolds on, they could still both see everything.
Lilith watched run ran to the edge of the stage and pull Demetri up. He handed him a wooden plank and Demetri shut his eyes as he held up the board.
"We put a bunch of little holes in these bad boys so you guys will be able to see where you're kicking." Johnny whispered to the girls as Jake ran for Demetri, jumping in the air and pulling off a perfect spinning kick that snapped the board Demetri was holding in half.
The crowd erupted in cheers and Demetri stared at the broken board in awe before his eyes moved to Jake. The Greene boy let out a happy laugh, not noticing Demetri's face pink up because of the stage lights above them.
As Jake helped Demetri back down into the crowd, Miguel and Hawk ran toward the wings of the stage and each grabbed one of the girls hands the help them into the center, the rest of the team each grabbing boards for the girls to break.
Hawk dragged Aisha to the right side of the stage while Miguel led Lilith to the left side. Once both girls were standing in front of their own line of boards to break, Miguel and Hawk walked to the center of the stage and yelled a "Ais!" telling the girls to start.
In sync, Lilith and Aisha broke all the boards in their respected lines, finishing at the exact same time. Lilith peeled off her blindfold when the audience practically roared for her and Aisha. She laughed, unable to hide her smile as Miguel ran toward her and grabbed her hand.
Lilith looked back at Miguel just as he leaned forward and kissed her cheek. "Nice job, baby." He whispered pulling Lilith back as Johnny started to walk onto the stage, Doug and Edwin trailing behind him with blocks of cement.
The boys quickly stacked the cement in front of Johnny. "Cobras, light it up!" Johnny yelled and Jake took a step forward, lighting the cement on fire with fuel and a lighter.
Lilith watched as Johnny stared down at the flaming cement in front of him. He waited until Jake had backed away and was out of any line of fire–ironic, right?–before he raised his fist and punched the cement.
The girl flinched, not expecting Johnny to actually punch the cement and certainly not expecting him to actually break the cement.
Luckily, her reaction wasn't too big and no one in the audience noticed. She and the rest of her team lined up with Johnny, Lilith standing in between Aisha and Miguel, who was beside Johnny while Hawk was on the other side of the man, Jake next to him.
Lilith smiled at the audience, specifically Demetri and Moon in the front row before her and the rest of her team yelled. "Cobra Kai!"
