Chapter 5
Hyunjin closed the door behind him and was just about to go back to the base when Yuna came running towards him.
"Can you come with me? I could use your help," she shouted to him while passing and without hesitation Hyunjin ran after her.
Even before he could see what was going on, he already heard the screams of several patients.
When he turned around the corner behind Yuna, he almost ran against her because she had stopped abruptly.
In the adjacent hallway, two patients stood opposite each other, while another sat on the floor and held his ears.
"AND WHAT DOES THE WHOLE THING BRING YOU? JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE PROBLEMS, YOU HAVE TO BEHAVE LIKE AN ASS!"
"OH, FUCK YOU HONESTLY! YOU HAVE NO IDEA OF MY LIFE AND JUST BECAUSE YOU THINK YOU FEEL BETTER AFTER IT YOU WANT TO ACT LIKE A HERO," screamed the bigger of the two, slapped the guy opposite him in the face and tried to pull the younger one who was sitting on the floor with him.
"Oh no! YOU WILL NOT TAKE HIM WITH YOU!" the smaller one shouted and just wanted to jump back on his opponent when Yuna gave Hyunjin a signal and they both injected the quarrels sedatives at the same time.
They both collapsed almost instantly and Hyunjin and Yuna took a deep breath.
The boy who was sitting on the floor stared at them in shock. He trembled all over his body and tears ran down his face.
"Everything's fine Jeongin...," Hyunjin murmured and stretched out his hands to help the younger up.
He grabbed the elder's with trembling hands and then clung to him sobbing.
"Hyunjin, can you bring Jeongin to his room? I have to take care of the two quarrels..," said Yuna and sounded incredibly tired and frustrated.
"Is that okay with you?" Hyunjin asked the younger one who was still hanging on him.
"Y-yes...," he sobbed and only pressed himself even closer against him.
"Well, then come on. It's all right," Hyunjin said gently and slowly went off with him.
Jeongin took a deep breath and then loosened his grip so that they didn't have to walk so strangely intertwined across the hallway, but he couldn't stop sobbing.
Hyunjin didn't know exactly how he could help him, but when they passed the base he stopped thoughtfully.
"Do you like brownies?" he finally asked.
Confused, the younger one looked at him, but almost abruptly stopped sobbing and finally nodded hesitantly.
"My best friend Felix baked some and gave them to me for work. Would you like to have one?" Hyunjin asked with a smile.
"Home-baked?" Jeongin asked quietly and his eyes began to shine.
"Sure. I wouldn't eat others at all," Hyunjin said quietly chuckling and took the box Felix had given him out of his bag. "Here, take some."
Jeongin hesitated briefly, but the scent of the brownies finally convinced him and shyly smiling he finally took two pieces. "Thank you," he muttered.
"Come on, let's take you to your room,"
Jeongin nodded and after talking for a moment, Hyunjin finally returned to the base, in his hand a coffee that he had just gotten in the kitchen.
Yuna sat exhausted at the desk and typed her report.
"Shall I get you a coffee too?"
Yawning, Yuna shook her head and turned to Hyunjin. "No. But you could get me a bottle of water."
It was as if a switch had turned over in Hyunjin's head with the word water and he hit his forehead.
"Hmm?" Yuna looked at him in surprise.
"I wanted to ask you if Chan can have flower in his room. He was with the night bloomers at the pond earlier and I think somehow the time there was good for him."
It took a moment for Yuna to answer. "You actually know he can't have anything in his room that he could hurt himself with. But I think if you take a plastic cup, it'll be fine. Maybe that will bring him some peace," she finally said with a smile.
"Thank you," Hyunjin replied and went to the staff kitchen to get scissors and a cup.
Fortunately, it was still so bright in the garden that Hyunjin could see the paths and shortly afterwards he had arrived at the pond.
The air smelled of lilac and other night bloomers and if he had not had a mission, he would have liked to sit down for a moment and be intoxicated by the scent.
But so he went to the pond and filled the cup with water, because he then carefully placed it on one of the benches and cut off various flowers.
When he was satisfied with his selection, he tied the flowers together with his hair tie and put them in the cup.
Yawning, he finally made his way back and soon knocked quietly on Chan's room door before opening it.
Blinking overslept, Chan looked at him as if Hyunjin had just woken him up.
"I thought you weren't coming anymore..." Chan murmured, rubbed his face and sat up.
Smiling, Hyunjin put the cup on Chan's bedside table. "I'm sorry, I didn't want to wake you up. I had something to do before. I hope you like them."
Chan nodded and again the hint of a smile appeared on his lips. He gently stroked the flowers with his fingertip before turning to Hyunjin.
"They are beautiful! Thank you!" he said quietly and Hyunjin was surprised to find that his words sounded sincere.
"You're welcome! Sleep well..," Hyunjin said and turned around to leave the room again.
"C-Can you... are... are you here for longer?" he heard Chan quietly ask.
Astonished, Hyunjin turned to the older one and looked at him questioningly. "Yes, I am. I have a night shift until 6 a.m. tomorrow morning."
"Do you think I... I could get something to eat? I didn't get anything down at dinner earlier..."
"Probably not... but I'll ask. And I'm trying to be faster this time," Hyunjin said with a gentle grin on his lips.
Chan nodded and snuggled back into his bed while Hyunjin left the room and returned to the base.
But Yuna wasn't there and neither was any of the other caretakers.
Sighing, Hyunjin went on a search and finally found Yuna in the employee kitchen.
"Do we still have anything to eat for the patients? Chan couldn't eat anything at dinner..." Hyunjin asked.
"No, the kitchen for the patients is closed and I don't have a key for it either.. sorry..." she said, shrugged her shoulders and poured herself a coffee.
"Hmm..." Hyunjin thoughtfully went back to the base.
He furtively looked around and when he was sure that no one would see him, he grabbed the box with Felix Brownies and ran it to Chan's room.
He knocked quietly before he opened the door and slipped into the room.
"I thought you weren't coming anymore," said Chan, yawned and sat up.
Hyunjin walked over to the bed with a smile and sat down hesitantly on the edge of the bed. "I said I would come. Unfortunately I didn't get dinner for you anymore... Buuuut I can offer you the brownies that my best friend baked."
Chan's eyes began to light up and Hyunjin was sure that he had never seen him like this before.
"Would you like to try one?" he asked with a smile.
And after Chan nodded, Hyunjin opened the box and held it to the older one. He carefully took a brownie and after hesitating for a moment, he finally bit in.
"Oh wow, they're insanely good," Chan murmured, although his words were very indistinct.
Hyunjin stayed with Chan for a moment, but unlike Jeongin, they sat silently next to each other. Although he had an incredible number of questions, he did not dare to ask the elders.
Even if they were actually just harmless questions. What hobbies he had or what his favorite color was.
He wanted to get to know the older one better, but he had the feeling that this was absolutely inappropriate. On the one hand, to ask him such questions while he had completely different problems and on the other hand, it was inappropriate because Chan was a patient here.
So he didn't say anything and just watched Chan as he ate the brownies.
He looked too happy and resolved that Hyunjin undertook to ask Felix for the recipe. And maybe to teach him how to bake them.
"Thank you. They are incredibly good..," Chan finally murmured after eating three pieces.
"You're welcome. I hope you get through the night without being too hungry now. Sleep well," he said quietly, pressed the lid on the box and stood up.
"Thank you," Chan murmured, closed his eyes and snuggled up in his blanket.
"God, he looks so cute..." Hyunjin thought and just managed to suppress a sigh.
The rest of the shift was quite boring and somehow very slow. Yuna tried to keep him awake with various small tasks, but at some point they got bored.
Shortly before six, they made their last round, cleaned up a bit and made coffee for the early shift.
"God, I'm glad that we'll be over with the night shifts tomorrow. I'm incredibly tired," Yuna sighed and said goodbye to Hyunjin yawning.
"Me too... see you later," he murmured and almost drove home in his work clothes.
