Racetrack Higgins in 'A Christmas Carol'
The snow was falling creating a powder effect on the streets of New York City.
Race looked out the window of his New York apartment.
His tree was set up in the corner, and the stockings were hung over the fireplace.
The apartment was mostly silent with the sound of the fire crackling and the sound of Christmas music softly drifted through the speakers of Race's radio.
It had been a few months since the news of Luna's death.
The group of Newsies had drifted to the point where every time they saw each other they were reminded of the file that changed their lives.
It was Christmas eve, and Race was alone. Luna was gone, his friends didn't want to see him, and Becca was in a coma, leaving him to celebrate Christmas alone.
He stared out the window into the streets of New York where people rushed to finish their Christmas shopping, where couples were skating on the Ice Rink, and where children were playing in the snow.
Race looked at his reflection in his window.
His eyes were bloodshot, he had bags under his eyes, and the smell of smoke and alcohol radiated off of him.
He was lost without his twin.
Everytime he looked in the mirror he saw his sister. Her laugh haunted his dreams.
He couldn't escape the constant reminder of his twin sister.
"I have to get out of here." Race said, walking away from the window.
He glanced at the box in Becca's stocking, and a tear slipped out of his eye at the thought of his girlfriend.
He put on his coat and his scarf and walked out the door, into the cold streets of New York city.
Race looked at the people passing him on the street. People holding hands, children playing in the snow, teens kissing under the mistletoe, everything Race couldn't have.
He walked around the streets of New York for what seemed like hours.
Now he sat in front of six graves. He didn't say anything, he just sat there wishing his life was normal.
"You can't bring them back." A voice said.
Race looked around, but saw nothing.
"Their still with you." a second voice said.
Race stood up and looked around, and still saw nothing.
"I'm a ghost and I'm here to haunt you!" A third voice said.
Now Race was worried. He was hearing things.
"Turn around." The first voice said.
Race turned around and saw three people sitting on different graves.
"Who are you?" Race asked.
"Thought you'd remember your own twin sister." Luna said.
"No this isn't real. My sister is dead." Race said, rubbing his eyes.
"No matter how hard you try, we're not going to go away." The second voice said.
Race looked at the figure that the second voice was coming from.
"Ma?" Race asked.
Caterina Higgins stood up and made her way to her son.
"You've grown up so much." She said, stroking her son's face.
"I miss you mommy." Race said, a tear falling out of his eye.
Caterina wiped the tear off her son's face and brought him into a hug.
Race clung to his mother for dear life.
"Why are you here?" Race asked.
"Because you need us." Luna said walking over to her brother.
Race brought her into a bone-crushing hug.
"Why did you leave me?" Race whispered.
"I didn't mean too." Luna said.
"But you did." Race said, hiding his head in his sister's neck.
"I had too. It was my time." Luna said.
No more was said between the two, they just hugged each other like there was no tomorrow.
"Where's my hug?!" The third voice asked.
The twins pulled away.
Race looked at the girl who stood by his mother's side. She was about 13, and looked like Spot.
"Caterina." Race said.
"Hiya Uncle Race!" Cat said.
"You look so much like your father, it isn't even funny." Race said hugging his niece.
"God you're short." Race said.
Cat hit her Uncle on his chest.
"We're here to show you something's." Cat said.
"Christmas past, Christmas present, and Christmas future." Luna said.
"But I don't need Christmas spirit." Race said.
"Oh yes you do. Don't pull that crap with me." Luna said.
"No. I love that you all are here, but you don't need to show me things. I know what will happen in my life. I'm fine." Race said.
"Anthony Michael Higgins you are going to travel to different times with us and you're going to like it." Luna said.
"Yes ma'am." Race said, scared of his ghost sister.
"Aren't you all a little fancy to be in a graveyard?" Race questioned.
"Don't question why your sister does things. I've learned that the hard way." Cat said.
Each of the girls had on different Christmas colors.
Race's mother was in a green floor length dress, Cat was in a red floor length dress, and Luna was in a short silver dress that showed off her long legs.
"Well get on with it. I have a bed to get to." Race said.
Luna rolled her eyes at her brother.
"Okay so first we have Christmas Past. So we're going back to the beginning." Caterina Higgins said.
The four stood still, while everything around them moved quickly.
Suddenly Race and his family were standing in front of the Lodging House.
"Remember this?" Race's mother said.
He looked at his mother. Now it was just the two of them.
"Yea I do. It was the Christmas before we all left because the Summer's brothers were after us." Race said.
Caterina placed her hand on her sons shoulders. "You all were so happy." She said.
Race looked up at his mother. "Yea we were." He said, looking inside at his friends.
Race and Spot were dancing around the Christmas tree drunk as can be, Blink and Alicia were spending every moment under the mistletoe kissing and hugging like there was no tomorrow, David and Les were baking Christmas cookies filling the Lodging House with a wonderful smell, the boys were decorating the Lodging House, singing off-tune Christmas carols, and Jack was sitting alone looking at the old picture of Sarah and him, wishing she was by his side.
A tear fell out of Race's eye. "I miss it." Race said.
"I know." Caterina said.
"I wish it would all go back to the way it was." Race said.
There wasn't an answer.
Race looked around and didn't see his mother.
"Guess I'm alone." He said.
The scene changed, and he was standing in front of a glass window.
"Hiya!" A perky voice said.
Race turned around and saw his niece.
"Hi Cat." Race said, turning back to the window.
Inside were his friends. Jack, Spot, Blink, Alicia, Camryn, Alyssa, and David.
"They're celebrating without me." Race said.
"They tried to reach out and invite you but you wouldn't have it. They gave up trying, and just left you alone." Cat said.
"They look happy." Race said.
"It's not the same without you." Cat said.
Race observed the scene going on in front of him. They were laughing and having a good time like the old days.
"It's not the same without her." Race heard Jack say.
"It's not the same without either of them." Spot said.
Race turned his head away, not wanting to watch anymore.
The scene changed once more, and Race was standing in his apartment.
"Guess this is my future." Race muttered.
"You guessed correctly my idiotic brother." Luna said, appearing next to her twin.
"It's my apartment." Race said.
"Thanks captain obvious." Luna said.
Voices floated through the apartment.
"He's gone." the voice of Jack Kelly said.
"Serves him right. The bitter nasty wise-ass." Spot Conlon said.
"Hey don't talk like that." Alicia said, hitting Spot on his arm.
"He didn't want anything to do with us." David said.
"But now he's happy. He's with Becca and Luna again." Blink said.
Suddenly the apartment turned into a deep grave.
R.I.P Anthony 'Racetrack' Higgins
Beloved Son, and brother.
That was all it said.
"You gave up on hope. The soul thing we said we'd never give up on." Luna said, her eyes turning red.
"I'm sorry." Race said.
"It's too late." Luna said, before she pushed Race into the grave.
Race jolted awake.
He'd fallen asleep while at his family's graves.
"It's not too late." Race said.
He got up, and made his way toward Jack's apartment.
He took a deep breath before he knocked on the door.
He heard laughter as the door opened, revealing the face of Alicia.
"Race." She said.
"Merry Christmas. Can I come in?" Race asked.
Alicia held the door open and Race walked in.
"I'm sorry for pushing you all away. I didn't mean too. I miss Luna so much, and with Becca in her coma, it's all just too much." Race said.
"We forgive you." David said.
The rest of the night Race spent with his friends, remember the fun they had way back when.
It was their first Christmas without her, and it felt as if she was right next to them.
