chapter twenty three
the second he stepped into his brother's car after school on monday, hongjoong's heart instantly began racing. the only thing he's been able to think about all weekend is seonghwa, and he knew there was no way of stopping it. hongjoong was falling for this boy, and falling hard.
just like his past crushes, it's hard for hongjoong to hide his feelings. not only is it hard for him to hide his feelings with the person he liked, he also had a hard time hiding his emotions from his family.
usually, hongjoong didn't care if his family knew about his love interests. since he was a young boy, both his mother and brother have been very accepting of his sexuality. anytime he came home from school blabbering about a new boy he liked, they both made sure to listen intently to everything he had to say and encourage hongjoong to admit his feelings to the person. the only problem with hongjoong's crush this time that he never had to deal with in the past was that the boy was one of jongho's best friends...
as much as he tried to hold it back, hongjoong couldn't control it any longer. as he was sitting next to jongho, he felt like he was about to explode, like he was going to throw up all over himself. he knew he needed to tell jongho what was going on in his mind before it came out any other way.
"jongho, i have something super important to tell you." hongjoong said as he turned to face his brother, who was parking his car in front of their house.
"ok, tell me." jongho answered nonchalantly after he finished parking.
hongjoong instantly panicked when jongho answered him, regretting every saying anything in the first place.
wait, but am i ready to tell him? what if jongie's mad at me... what if he hates the idea of me liking his best friend?
hongjoong pushed his panicked thoughts to the side and continued speaking to the older.
"wait, no. i have to tell mommy too, and i know she came home today. so let's go inside, i'll tell both of you at the same time." hongjoong shakily said as he quickly opened the car door, grabbing his bag and rushing towards his house.
"well that was a bit weird." jongho said to himself as he stepped out of his car, furrowing his eyebrows at his brother's strange behavior.
"hi my love!" hongjoong's mom tried greeting her son after she opened the door, but he ran past her and straight to the couch.
she turned her head, surprised at her son's behavior. hongjoong was always jumping for joy when he first got to see her after she'd been at work for a few days, but he was acting the complete opposite this time.
as jongho walked his way to the house, his mother gave him a concerned look, "what's wrong with him?" she asked, pointing to the boy on the couch.
jongho sighed, "i'm not sure, honestly. he was silent the whole car ride and as soon as we pulled up to the house, he blurted out that he had to tell me something important, but then said he wanted to wait to get into the house to discuss it with the both of us." jongho explained and his mother nodded her head in understandment.
"hey joongie, is everything alright? did something happen in school today?" hongjoong's mother asked as she walked up to the boy, putting an arm around him.
"y-yeah, everything is ok..." hongjoong sniffled a bit.
"oh my god, baby are you going to cry? please, tell us what happened." hongjoong's mother rambled out frantically, surprised to see her happy-go-lucky son look so distraught right in front of her for some unknown reason.
"it-it's just.... i like this boy..." hongjoong began speaking and jongho sat down beside him, rubbing his thigh to relax the small boy.
"it's ok babe, you know you can tell us anything." jongho smiled at his brother, pulling on his cheek a bit.
hongjoong giggled, "i know, and i'm never one to hold my feelings in like this... but this time, it's for a reason."
"what could be so bad about it this time? the last crush you had was one of your best friends, i don't think it can get much worse than that!" hongjoong's mother laughed, trying to make light of the situation.
her comment made both jongho and hongjoong laugh along with her, "yeah, i feel like it can't get worse than liking your best friend." jongho added.
"well, maybe it could be worse when you like your brother's best friend." hongjoong mumbled so quietly that both his mother and his brother couldn't hear his comment.
"wait, what was that sweetie? i couldn't hear you." his mother asked, furrowing her eyebrows in confusion.
"i- i, um..." he trailed off.
"joongie, it's ok. we won't be mad at you, no matter who it is." jongho reassured his brother once again.
hongjoong let out a big breath, "ok, um... it's, it's s-seonghwa. yeah, it's jongho's friend, seonghwa." hongjoong frowned, afraid of his brother's reaction.
"baby, there's nothing wrong with that!" hongjoong's mom cheered, hugging her son tightly. she saw nothing wrong with hongjoong's innocent crush on seonghwa, but jongho was definitely thinking differently.
jongho knew this would not end well. he knew seonghwa very well and he knew hongjoong very well, and the two of them would not work out together. at least, not on seonghwa's end.
he knew how seonghwa felt about his brother. he knew the jokes, the comments, and the insults he made constantly. he knew that hongjoong was bound to get hurt, and he had to do something about it.
but for his brother's sake, jongho put on a huge fake smile, "joongie, that's great! you even already know seonghwa, so you have a better chance with him. and i know he's dated boys in the past, so you already know he won't deny you for the same reasons the last boys did!"
"you're right." hongjoong blushed, thinking of the possibility of being with seonghwa.
"now aren't you glad you told us? maybe jongho can even help you out a bit!" his mother smiled, nudging her oldest son.
jongho once again had to fake a smile and pretend like he didn't want to kill his mother for putting even more hope into hongjoong's mind.
"she's right." he answered dryly.
"really!? you think so?" hongjoong jumped, changing his frowning expression to one of excitement.
"maybe joongie. i can see what i can do. but don't get your hopes up too high, i don't know what he'll say." jongho said, trying to get the boy to sort of understand that things might not end too well.
"yay! anything is better than nothing, thank you jongie!" hongjoong screamed, jumping off the couch in excitement, "i'm gonna go upstairs and tell woo and yeo about this! i'll see you two at dinner!" hongjoong waved, running towards his room while squealing.
jongho let out a huge breath once his brother's door was shut.
"now isn't that adorable? he likes seonghwa, your friend!" ms. kim said to jongho as she turned to face him.
"no mom. it's not adorable at all! i know seonghwa, and i know for a fact he won't like hongjoong like that. why would you tell him that i'd help him out? he's now going to think he will automatically like him, and i'll be seen as the bad guy when he gets rejected! i know i told him it might not work, but i know for a fact he has false hope now!" jongho quietly screamed, not wanting his brother to hear the conversation he was having with his mother.
"baby, you don't think i know that already?" she sighed, placing a hand on jongho's shoulder, "but i can't see your brother upset, he's too precious to hurt."
"but when he gets hurt from seonghwa, it'll be my problem to deal with." he rolled his eyes.
"it won't be. but i do think you should tell the boy about hongjoong's feelings. maybe get someone else to babysit him, so he can get over the crush. the only way you'll be able to fix things is if you tell seonghwa the situation at hand." she suggested and jongho thought for a second, eventually nodding his head in agreement.
"you're right. thanks mom. i'll talk to him tomorrow and figure everything out." jongho exclaimed as he stood up from his seat.
"you're welcome. and honestly, you never know... maybe his response will surprise you." she winked at jongho who chuckled in response.
"i guess you're right." he admitted, "i have some homework to do, so i'll see you in a bit." jongho waved as he began walking towards his room.
"see you later, honey!" jongho's mother called as she watched her son disappear into his room, quickly turning on the tv to continue watching the show she had on before her sons arrived home from school.
