18: Getting Wet
"You're getting me wet Seb!"
"I didn't know that." Sebastian waggled his brow at me and started laughing.
I couldn't fathom why he was laughing until I realized that I made a sexual innuendo.
"You have a dirty mind Seb." I splashed some more water at him and he shielded his eyes from the crystal liquid.
"So do you." He chuckled and splashed water at me. I tried dodging the cold liquid but I ended up falling, causing a huge splash in the process.
I slapped my hand around as I tried to swim to my feet. I expected Sebastian to help me but instead of doing that, he entered a full laughter session.
"Sorry," His speech was decorated with laughter. I folded my arms on my chest and glared at him. While he continued swaying in laughter, I seized my opportunity to pay him back. Without thinking, I jumped on him, pushing the both of us into the water and forming another huge splash that affected the couple swimming close to us.
"Hey! Watch it you two!" The guy growled and swam away with his girlfriend who seemed jealous of Seb and I.
" What's wrong with those two?" Seb asked, looking in the direction of the couple.
"I don't know, but I'm glad they left. They were boring anyways."
Sebastian watched them for a few seconds and turned his face to me.
"Do you like it here?" He questioned, searching my eyes for something.
"What are you talking about? This is the most fun I've had in years." I floated in the water and stared up at his face from which the drops of water falling from his hair landed.
" I thought you didn't like it here. "
"I like here of course." I shot him a smile to reassure him and he nodded.
Suddenly filled with another urge to play a prank on him, I held my breath and went under the water. I swam around till I was positioned perpendicular to his back.
While I stared at him, I wished he was Philip so I could wrap my arms around his wide back.
His sudden rotational movement snapped me out of my reverie. I swam away from him so I wouldn't get hit by his fist.
"Florence?" I could hear him call.
I smiled and swam a little distance away from him towards the couple that left earlier, then I resurfaced right behind them.
"Hey Seb, over here! " I yelled and Seb whipped his head around in my direction. A smile appeared on his face but it was a suspicious one so I gulped as he began swimming in my direction.
"What the hell!" The guy from before growled as I intentionally kicked his leg when I tried to maintain my upright position.
"Oops, sorry." I apologized and swam away as fast as I could from them.
Where's Sebastian? I looked around the large body of water hoping I would find him among the lively people chattering here and there.
Then I felt a hand creeping up my leg, it inched higher till it held onto my waist with a vice-like grip. Instead of screaming, I just stood there shivering and waiting for the worst to happen.
"Scaredy cat." Sebastian spoke from behind me. We were standing so close to each other that if I moved just a bit I would be leaning against his hard, finely toned chest and his well defined abs.
"What's wrong with you? You freaked me out!" I turned around to face him with a scowl. He didn't flinch, instead he watched me calmly.
"You know, you look cute when you scowl."
"Seb!"
"OK, OK, I'm sorry." He apologized.
My wet hair got in the way of my sight so I tried to tuck it away but it ended up returning to it's previous position.
"Stupid hair. Why did I leave my hair band behind?" I whined.
I hated my hair getting in my way, it always entered my mouth whenever I tried eating or drinking anything. I was tempted to cut it so many times but Mom and Tam discouraged me.
Sebastian chuckled as he watched me struggle with my hair. Then he immersed his hand in the water and brought up something that resembled my hair band.
"Hey! Where did you get that?" I tried yanking the band out of his fingers but he lifted it above his head.
"It fell out somewhere, I picked it up knowing you'd be needing it soon."
How could he know me so well?
"Hand it over then."
"Am I not getting a thank you?"
"No, give it back."
"No."
I tried reaching up for the band but my hand didn't get higher than his head. I paid no attention to the fact that we were standing so close to each other than necessary until the tip of my nose brushed against his lips. He froze momentarily and allowed his hand drop to his side.
I gazed into his eyes and discovered so many emotions hidden there. Fascinated by what I saw in his honey-coloured irises, I refused to let my emotions win.
What was even wrong with me?
I broke off the staring contest, swimming a bit farther from him even though I could bet on anything that Sebastian was leaning in for a kiss.
A voice spoke up. An all too familiar voice.
"Am I interrupting anything? I guess not."
I turned around and met Philip's steely glare. Well, he wasn't actually glaring at me, he was glaring at his friend, Seb. And underneath that facade, he seemed hurt.
"Hey man." Sebastian swam to the shore and stood face to face with Philip.
I knew Philip came straight from an important event seeing the manner of clothes he was dressed in.
Philips nostrils flared out and his fists clenched beside him. I prayed fervently that a fight wouldn't break out.
Sebastian feigned oblivion as to why Philip was fuming with rage so he looked back at the water where I remained submerged and mouthed ' what did I do? '
I shrugged and swam to meet with the two men.
"Philip, what are you doing here?" I demanded as soon as I had planted myself in between the two men just in case one of them tried to swing a fist at the other. It was a risk I took, a big one at that.
"Does it matter?"
"Were you following me?"
Philip looked at me for a brief second and sighed before so giving me an answer with his eyes. He stared away from me and looked at the water behind my back, or rather at Sebastian who was strangely silent.
"Why did you follow me, that's called stalking you know?"
"I couldn't trust Sebastian with you."
Sebastian groaned. "Come on man, you know me too well."
"Not any longer." Philip replied in an icy tone.
"Seb and I were just having a good time together, there's nothing more." I replied hoping my response would help calm Philip's rage. It only fueled his rage and took it to a higher level.
"Seb? Is that what you call him now? Seb? How convenient." Philip ran his fingers through his hair and paced around while breathing heavily.
"Philip."
"Save it, I don't need your flimsy excuses."
I felt a slight pang in my heart. I felt bad that Philip doubted me. With the way he looked at me, it was like he had just lost his complete trust in me.
He shut his eyes and opened them again. His mouth opened and snapped shut again like he was struggling with something inside him.
"Um. I'll have to step away now." Sebastian spoke up making me remember that he was still standing behind me.
"No, don't, stay. You know what? You look good together." Philip said.
His speech was like a sharp knife digging into my chest with the aim of ripping my heart out. Ignoring how emotionally hurt I was, I tried to get him to look at me but failed because he was intentionally avoiding my eyes.
"You're no better than Peter."
Immediately he said those words, they served as an outlet for my rage.
"What did you just say?"
He remained silent.
"How dare you compare me to your brother? You feel I'm secretly screwing your best friend because I came to the beach with him. That's unfair, Philip."
The rage in me gradually made way for tears which coursed steadily down my eyes.
"You know what else is unfair? You and your brother coming into my life is." l choked and cleaned my teary eyes.
Philip heaved and tried to reach out for my hand but I moved away from him.
"Leave me alone!" I yelled and marched towards the umbrella under which Seb and I were seated before we decided to take a dip in the water. I picked my phone and my clothes and stared back at the two men who were gradually approaching me and at the same time maintaining their distance from each other.
I slipped my clothes on, not minding how wet my bikini was.
"Florence, I'm sorry." Philip spoke.
"Save it."
He tried reaching for my hand again but I held up a finger to stop him.
"Don't." I warned.
I stomped out of the beach and headed to Sebastian's car. I remembered that he was with the keys. A huff escaped my lips as I leaned against the black SUV waiting for Sebastian to make his way to my position.
A few minutes later, Sebastian appeared before me with a weak smile on his face. I could tell that he was also hurt like me. He felt bad because his best friend doesn't trust him anymore. I know how it feels when the people you care about don't trust you anymore, it hurts badly, the pain's excruciating.
It also hurts when you have no control over your emotions anymore.
"Let's go home." He said.
