Chapter 4 (Deadly)

It had been several long months later. The game was booming. Players with all sorts of names came on and played the game. Soon the players could customize their own skins, so no longer did everyone look the same. The world itself shifted to have larger, more realistic looking, landscaping. And the blocks multiplied in variety. All sorts of things became possible. The world slowly began setting into a natural circle. During the night the players would rule, building to whatever extent they themselves possessed; and the monsters crept into and ruled the night. It was so dark at night back then that there was no hope for the players other than to go back home, as it should be.

As time progressed, the players slowly grew stronger. They learned and taught one another how the game works, and together they would build things to stop the monsters and keep themselves safe at night. To balance this out, the mobs grew too. Endermen's eyes glowed purple to match the new Nether Portal, and a new species of green monsters, known as Creepers, began balancing things out.

In the worlds where there were only one or two players, the world was pretty well balanced. But, when the world had much more than that, the scales were tipped completely. And Steve noticed this right away. It was painful for him to watch the players take over a world and keep everything for themselves. Sometimes it seemed like, every block they broke and placed, he could feel it, in the very core of his blocky being. Every update, he was just becoming more and more encoded into the game. To the point where he drew power from its growth. And from that, a legend was born.

"That player is destroying too much of this peaceful world. It should be destroyed, and rethink what it has done." A voice unknown to Steve, but still from his own mouth, spoke. Steve agreed. That player was going too far. He was killing villagers, a new mob in the game designed to look like people, just for fun.

As the player left the now burning village, Steve stalked in the shadows. He followed the player into the forest where it was especially misty at that time. Steve quietly debated to himself the best way to teach the player a lesson. He didn't have any time to think, unfortunately. He didn't really know there was a time limit. Suddenly the player turned and looked at Steve from a distance. Steve figured he wouldn't notice him like all the other times since he seemed invisible, but the player froze in his tracks.

"Wait, can he.. see me?" Steve asked himself. Before he could walk closer for answers the player ran off in the opposite direction, then left the game altogether. "It still has to learn." Steve pondered.

He then flew over to where the player had left and placed a sign right in front of where he had left. "stop," it read. Then, he waited..

It was several hours later when the player finally returned. Once he did, he looked down on the sign that wasn't there before. He jumped in shock and broke the sign. Steve hoped he would do that. All of a sudden the entire floor lit up with explosions from below, and the player was obliterated. That world was quickly deleted, forcing Steve out of it and back into that very first world. He could tell it was the same one. He could just sense it. That world had a much older feel to it. It almost felt ancient to Steve then, even though it had only been a few years. And on that world, was Mark. He had a username and skin of his own as well. His name was "Notch," and his outfit looked similar to how he recognized him, except the skin warn had a thick black beard a pretty derpy looking face. It looked like the old friend was messing with some new Redstone he was considering on adding into the official game. The whole place was pretty littered with tests of all kinds.

"..Mark?" Steve tilted his head, a little smile appearing on his face. It had been so long since he had seen anyone he knew other than a few monsters he seemed to get along with. He tried typing in chat, but he didn't have the power for that. So, like he had started doing, he pulled out a sign and placed it down to type. But once it was down, he just didn't know what to say. What would you say to someone who created the very game you were stuck in?. Steve had never thought of it that way before. Almost made him a little angry towards his old friend. But he knew he needed out. And if anyone could get him out, it would be the smartest friend he ever had.

After a long moment of silence full of nothing but thinking, Steve simply wrote: "help"

     Then, something unexpected happened.

The corners of Steve's eyes flashed multiple colors at once as if something was creeping into his vision. They were large multicolor pixels, and they didn't look friendly. Those pixels flashed on and off again. After a couple flashes, something new came with them. The sky was dark, and his sight seemed completely inverted. All the shrubbery glowed an ugly green or blue, while the nearby mobs glowed orange or red. And the only player in that world off in the distance, "Notch," glowed a pure white. Steve looked at the sign and his eyes flashed again. That time there was a hollow black text over the text he had written, "stop" was all it said.

"Wh- what's happening?" Steve looked down at his fists and feet. Out of all the colors that changed during the now more rapid flashes, his own self stayed the same. "Must leave this world." Steve's new distorted voice told himself. Then he quickly made a portal and ran threw it as if escaping a tsunami.

When he reappeared on the other side his breath was shakey and movements were strained. He ran up to and leaned against a tree as he caught his breath.

"Need, more energy." He thought out loud. Then he began scouting the forest like a preying wolf looking for a sheep. Those pixels that had been flashing in the corners of his eyes stood their ground there, just every now and then shifting their position. After a minute of searching, Steve found what he was looking for. A player. They glowed a bright yellow. Not as powerful as Notch, but still good enough. Like a robot low on battery, Steve made his way towards the player, not caring if he were seen or not.

This player had a full set of diamond armor and a strong diamond sword with several enchantments. But it wasn't the loot Steve cared for. It was the the newest update that slowly got to him.

"Hm. Another player? I thought I had multilayer off." The player turned to look at Steve. He stopped dead solid by the sight of that hungry look in Steve's eyes. "What the-" The player was cut off when Steve jumped right over the player, manifested a sword of his own in his hands, and stabbed the player in the center of the chest. The items and armor dropped from the attacked player immediately, and the new glowing yellow orbs jumped right into Steve's body. Immediate satisfaction filled the young man as he felt his power increase right then. His evil smile not even recognizable.

"Good job." Steve congratulated himself. Then he set off through a new portal, in search for more...

========================
Ooooooo! What's going to happen next!? I already know because I've planned the whole thing already, but that doesn't mean I'm not excited. :>
