Chapter 3 (Interest)
All of a sudden the little game Steve was so familiar with, split. There was suddenly, out of nowhere, a whole nother universe, with a world of its own and everything. Steve was interested in this new universe that had suddenly appeared. So using the power that had built up over the year or two, he raised up his right hand and a large swirly red portal appeared. The portal flickered with electricity and dark void bubbles that floated out of it suckling up the immediate light around them, but neither of those things even scared Steve. It was new to him for sure, but not scary.
So Steve floated on through the portal with wonder about what he might find on the other side.
When Steve arrived on the other side of the portal, he saw that he was in a desert, which was different from the meadow he had just left. Much warmer too.
Right away, as the portal closed behind him, Steve scanned the horizon for anything out of the ordinary. Something moving in the distance caught his eye. It was another Steve, far off in the distance, building a house by a little oasis in the middle of the desert. The young man flew over to the person and watched as this new commer messed with the blocks in his inventory, trying to make sense of the controls. Right away Steve knew that this wasn't Mark, nor anyone else who had helped him. This had to be a stranger, meaning Mark must have just started selling the game. This must have been a player.
Though Steve was well aware of his limits, he still tried communicating with this player. But the player neither saw or heard him. But at least Steve had something interesting to watch. The next month or so were spent going from universe to universe watching these new players build and break blocks.
Then something happened that Steve didn't even think possible. In the universe Steve was in he witnessed one of the first, if not, the first, thing in the update that would change the game forever.
<Is_Flambie has joined the game>
"Another player?" Steve flew to where another Steve stood. This player began breaking and placing blocks immediately. "Now with two, things might get even more interesting." He thought aloud.
"Hey Lilli, come see my house." The other player instructed.
"Where are you?" Lilli asked back through chat.
"Behind the large hill." Another message was sent through. The new player in-game just spun in a circle.
"..Which large hill?" She asked.
"Uughhh! Stay there, I'll come to you." Player one groaned through text. So as player one went searching for player two, player who just continued breaking and placing blocks. Eventually, the two found each other in the thicker part of the forest.
"Yay!" Both cheered, jumping up and down in celebration.
"Now which way?" Lilli then asked.
"...Uuummmm.." Player one then spun around in a circle. "I, don't, know." He/she finally stated. That last bit made Steve crack up laughing right away. Oh he hadn't had such a good laugh in nearly a year or two!
It was several updates later, which included fully finished animals when this happened:
A new player Steve was watching came across a pig. It was a rather delicious looking pig to the player, so he/she began punching the creature. Ouch! That first punch made Steve flinch. He was so in tune with the game that at times if an animal were even hurt he would know about it. And for some reason the player's punches effected Steve more than Notch had while testing the animal mechanics.
"Ouch." Steve mumbled. He tried turning to ignore it, but the player punched the pig yet again, making Steve's eye twitch. "Dude, stop." He flew over to the player and waved his hand in the person's face. But he was easily ignored again. Pretty soon the pig was dead, providing the player with a piece of meat. Steve figured that since the player was done, that he might finally get some peace again, which he was quite used to by then. But then.. a cow showed up. And as expected, the player began chasing that animal around too. Wondering if there might be another way to communicate with this person, Steve tried to see if he was powerful enough to have an inventory yet. And as he looked, indeed, he did have one. An unlimited inventory with everything the game could provide. Well, almost everything. There were several things he couldn't grab like bedrock or diamonds, but he had enough for what he wanted at the time.
Steve swiftly slid a sign into his blocky fists and tried placing it on the floor. It worked! The sigh actually appeared on the ground and allowed Steve to write on it. So excited by this new revelation, Steve wasn't even sure what to say. So he simply wrote, "stop." The player eventually turned around, noticed the sign, and looked all around as if he/she didn't believe it were real.
And even though that was such a little action, didn't even hurt a fly, anyone who knows the stories front to back, would know where this is going. :>
