Chapter 2 (Growth)
<conciousness gained.>
Steve's mind read like a computer, then, he woke up. And he had no idea what on earth was going on the moment he opened his eyes.
Steve shot up in shock, panting heavily and shaking in terror of what had just happened in that strange dream of his. But, when he looked around he was only even more confused. He was outside, though there was no trees, lakes, winds, or sounds of any kinds. It was the strangest thing Steve had ever even thought could happen. Under him, Steve felt soft but odd grass. When he looked down he saw it was only green pixels decorating a flat surface. When he looked down, however, was when he saw himself.
Steve's eyes widened when he saw himself as a ghostly pixelated form with no real identifiable shape. He jumped up in shock, which turned more into a fly up, about a couple feet into the air above the pixely greenery. The fact that he was some sort of ghost in what seemed to be Mark's new game was a little too much to believe.
"Hello!... Anyone.. anywhere?!.." The lonely man called into the endless blue around him. He was only answered with the echoes of his own voice. This was insane! How could someone even get inside a computer, much less likely a game!? It just didn't make any sense at all!
Steve freaked out, looking all around. All he saw were some stone blocks on the ground forming words. No.. It couldn't be.. if it were a dream then surely it wouldn't be so specific as to even have the note he had written Mark in-game. So he quickly flew up, just by imagining that he could, and looked down at the words the blocks formed. "Trees Please :)" The blocks formed.
"No! This can't be real!" Steve's awe horrified face changed to anger in a flash, and his whole self came crashing down on the little grassy platform. His intent was to somehow destroy the whole thing. But, he couldn't harm a single pixel. His blocky fists phased through the blocks and made the whole situation 10 times worse. Steve tried swinging and kicking at the stone, but his legs just went right through them. Eventually, he just gave up. He let time pass by flying around the platform aimlessly for what seemed like, and probably was days. He couldn't even enjoy the feeling of flying. He felt too angry and cooped up to even smile.
It was probably a few days later when something finally happened.
Steve sensed the game being booted up and the sudden presence of another being. When he looked around he saw the blank white canvas of a pixely human standing around, looking around at the stone on the grass slowly. Was it Mark? Did he finally come on to see if Steve was in the game? The character moved in such a way that it seemed almost sad.
Without another thought, Steve excitedly flew down in front of this pure white form and jumped up and down, waving his hands before the other figure. "Mark? Is that you?.. Mark! Can, you, hear, meee!?" Steve shouted. But the figure just looked on, not even noticing Steve.
Some stone appeared in the form's hand and it began jumping up and placing stone beneath it so that it was high up above the platform level. When it was high enough the form looked down at the words Steve had written. The form's head then failed all over the place sporadically, and it jumped down and destroyed all the blocks around it. The form even ended up in a deep pit of dirt, which it didn't even seem to care about. Then the form vanished, leaving Steve all alone again.
In just a couple hours time, the platform vanished and was replaced with a new one. This new one had new blocks on it. Blocks that when put together, looked like trees! The form then came back on and took a closer look at the new blocks before leaving again. Then the trees looked a little more realistic, and a little better colored. This happened over and over until the trees were pretty much perfect, in style of the game. And Steve just watched the outcome of his friend/coworker's determination show in his new creation. Oh if only he could actually play with these new blocks.
Then maybe he wouldn't have felt so imprisoned. Maybe he could have used that to communicate. And Mark didn't stop there. In just a couple months the little green platform had changed entirely. It was much larger and had actual stone and caves underneath the grass. And on top were hills, ponds, and trees. Steve finally had something nice to look at. He floated through the stone, finding every tiny cave until he had memorized every hollow spot. And every time the form came back on and changed something, he would be there, fascinated and totally jealous with its ability to break and place blocks.
And with no clocks of any kind, Steve lost track of time pretty quickly. He felt as the game shifted from one hardware to another, then things really started happening. Weird creatures that didn't fit with the pixely style skated around the world. Steve was instantly intrigued in them, mainly since he had nothing better to look at and the loneliness was past the annoying part by then. But those creatures were removed after a little bit and something else took their place. Something that puzzled Steve. The new creature looked like him, except it ran around aimlessly flailing its arms and legs like a young kid who ate too much sugar. Steve wondered if that was how Mark saw him. That thought made him chuckle a little.
And with those things, Steve found out how to access things he couldn't before. He felt himself slowly growing stronger in some way as the game was updated more and more. And that excited him. Finally, he got to the point where he could go inside the little Steve things and see from their points of view. Unfortunately, he couldn't control any of them just yet. But by then he had found the art of being patient. He had to be patient, waiting inside a game for probably a couple years by then was definitely a good teacher. And in that time he watched as the once small platform got bigger and bigger. And it also got a bit more complicated as well.
Different biomes appeared to liven the larger world, like deserts, mountains, oceans, jungles, and a couple more. All of these really excited Steve. He finally had much more to explore after sooo long. And not only that but every time the platform was reset, the world was entirely different. So there was so much to be done all of a sudden. Endless worlds meant endless adventure. Now only if Steve could actually break and place blocks like the form. Maybe, someday. Finally, someday, something DID happen. When the form got back on the world, it no longer looked like some white void. It looked, like Steve. It was almost like looking in a mirror. Except his fake reflection was more solid and had a funny smile looking thing on his face. And he found out that this new character's name.. was Steve...
