Ancestors High on Mushrooms
The boys were...something. Everyone was so different, yet they fit together like puzzle pieces. That's what Sky concluded within the first week of knowing them. They were all like diamonds-all unique on their own, yet together, they formed a pretty harmonious group. Each one of them had something to give. All of them filled in the gaps or spaces the others left. Hongjoong was great at leading, problem-solving, and giving solutions; Seonghwa, meanwhile, was always there to give you a listening ear, a shoulder to lean on when things get too tough; Wooyoung and San were like two bouncy balls, full of energy that they spread among others too like a virus; Yunho fell somewhere between them and Jongho-he was adaptable to a shockingly impossible degree-he knew when to have fun and when to turn serious. A good option to lead the team in Hongjoong and Seonghwa's absence. Jongho, meanwhile, was normally quiet and stoic, doing whatever was asked of him silently. He did have his moments, though. Just like now.
Sky watched Jonghog do a weird, wiggly dance routine to liven up the team's mood. Safe to say he succeeded. Most of the guys were on the ground, tearing up from laughter. Even Mingi was laughing his silent laugh with his eyes creased shut and mouth wide open. He looked like the inside of a half-cut bell pepper to her. Wooyoung's high-pitched laugh echoed across the big room as he watched Jongho reach the grand finale of his carefully crafted, extensive dance routine.
'Enough, let's get back to work now!' Hongjoong finally managed to speak between fits of laughter. San's sister had asked them to help her out with a few designs for her new dress. They were supposed to be helping embroider small floral patterns on a piece of fabric right now.
'Stop already now. I'm tired!' San groaned.
'True. We could do the rest of the work tomorrow morning; there's not much left to do.' Seonghwa said, already putting his instruments aside in a neat pile. 'Are you guys up for some stargazing?'
'I'll go bring marshmallows!' San jumped up from his seat, already running off to the kitchen. Sky heard some rustling and then a loud clang before the earth bender emerged, covered in flour and some sticky mixture that she couldn't exactly tell.
'You had one job.' Yunho facepalmed, already picking up a rag and rushing to the kitchen for damage control. Seonghwa escorted a pouting San to the bath, slapping the back of his head when he tried to lick off the gooey thing all over his body.
Once San was all cleaned up and the kitchen received Seonghwa's stamp of approval, the team embarked on its journey to the meadows; the place happened to be their spot of sorts.
'So, Sky,' Seonghwa said, putting an arm across her shoulders. 'Tell us a little more about yourself.' He looked at the shorter one of the two with interest, flustering her a little bit because of the close proximity.
'What do you want to know?' She wasn't quite sure where to start. There wasn't much interesting about her life anyway.
'Hmm.' Wooyoung thought for a bit while scratching his head. 'What about your hobbies? What do you do for fun?'
'Oh,' Sky racked her brain, trying to come up with an answer. What did she do for fun? She liked reading. But if it weren't a requirement from her father, she'd rather jump off a cliff than pick up a book. She played an instrument or a few. But it was her father who enjoyed her musical sessions more than herself. She did learn how to cook, too. But it was only because her father saw a woman who couldn't cook as unfit for marriage. In short, there was not a second in her twenty-four-year-long life in the cemented palace of Wonderland that Sky could describe as fun.
'Snatching the souls of little children.' Mingi answered for her. 'That's her fun activity.'
'Yes, like how your idea of a fun activity is sneaking into the women's bath.'
'It was one time!' Mingi cried, sending the rest of the gang into fits of laughter.
'Alright, we're here!' Yunho proclaimed, spreading the giant picnic cloth they brought along on the clearing. They all lay down, watching the stars rise up in the sky and occasionally pointing at a constellation they recognised.
'Oh look! That's the Great Bear!' Wooyoung pointed at the seven-star constellation hanging in the sky.
'Who named it the Great Bear? It doesn't even resemble a bear.' Mingi wondered. Sky had no choice but to agree. In her humble opinion, it looked more like a lever than anything.
'The ancestors were high on mushrooms when they named these constellations.' She found herself saying it out loud.
'How did they even find out what mushrooms were poisonous?' San wondered.
'Well, I suppose you'd avoid eating a mushroom too if you watched your friend drop dead after consuming it.' Yunho answered, and the whole crew fell back into silence, pointing out an occasional star or planet they saw until they heard soft snores coming from Hongjoong.
'Oh, he's out like a light.' San smirked, poking the captain with his finger. 'You know what that means?' A playful glint shone in his eyes, something sinister bubbling beneath the innocent glance he sent their way. Sky could tell he was up to no good. She could sense the chaos spreading in the air.
'That it's time to go home?' Jongho tried to prevent the oncoming doom.
'No, silly!' He turned to look at the forest, which looked eerily dark under the night sky. Despite the prominent full moon in the sky, none of the light managed to penetrate through the canopy of the trees. 'It's time for a treasure hunt!'
'Oh, not again!' Wooyoung groaned, already putting his shoes on to take his leave.
'Come on, it'll be fun!' San pouted, tugging the hands of Sky and Mingi. 'Please, they've never gone into the forest!'
'Hey, we didn't agree to this either!' Mingi spoke.
'But aren't you curious about what's in there?' San brought his face impossibly close to Mingi's, gazing into his eyes with his own deep chocolate brown ones.
'What's in there?' Sky questioned, her eyebrows furrowed in intrigue.
'It is said that the forest is home to the spirit of the Moon.' Seonghwa spoke, sitting back down on the ground. 'Elders tell that she is incredibly hard to find, a master of elusion. Those who manage to see the moon goddess are said to live a very long life.'
'I bet Granny saw her. There is no other explanation.' Wooyoung added, and Sky couldn't help but wonder. She did seem like a person who has seen things that normal humans can't fathom. It'd be weird if, after all these years of living here, she didn't catch a glimpse of the goddess or what they considered the moon goddess lurking around.
'I want to play.' Sky decided, earning a cheer from San and a groan from Seonghwa.
'Fine.' The eldest finally relented. 'How do we do this?'
San jumped into action, pulling out a few pieces of paper cheerily from his bag. 'We decide on teams at random and then go in together. The first one to see the spirit wins! We get two hours.'
'What if no one sees the spirit?' Mingi questioned.
'Then you should be convincing enough to make us believe that you did.' Seonghwa smirked, making a pair of chits with a similar symbol and shuffling them together. 'Okay! you pair up with the person with the same symbol as you!' He picked up one for himself, patiently waiting for the other to pick one as well. 'Alright now, once you open the chits, you can't change your partners. So if you want to exchange, do it right now.' He warned.
'Hey, give me yours.' Wooyoung reached out to snatch San's paper.
'No, why?' The taller of the two cried, clutching his paper protectively near his chest.
'Just give me yours!' The redhead whined.
'Hey, you're going to wake up Hongjoong!' Yunho spoke in a hushed voice. 'Just give him the paper.'
'Fine.' The two finally settled.
'Alright! Does anyone else want to switch?' Seonghwa scanned the bunch, waiting for a response. 'Okay, then. You may open your chits.'
Sky looked down at the symbol on her piece of paper, a neat star drawn upon it. She looked around, trying to find the person with its twin.
'Who has a heart?' Mingi asked, and Seonghwa raised his hand. Yunho and Jongho nodded at each other coolly. Great, so that leaves Wooyoung, San, and Yeosang.
'Seriously? You!' Wooyoung groaned, palming his face out of frustration.
'Hey, I'm not very happy to deal with you either!' San snapped back, a pair of matching cross symboled papers in his hand.
'Doesn't that mean that the switch earlier was practically pointless?' Jongho added, making Wooyoung groan even more.
'They're truly meant to be together.' Seonghwa shook his head, chuckling at the unfolding of events. 'That means Sky and Yeosang are partners.' He clasped his hands together, smiling at the two.
'Oh, I wanted to go with Sky!' San pouted.
'It's okay, we can go together next time!' She tried to console the whiny boy, patting his back for comfort.
'You better not let her get lost, Yeosang!' The Earth Mage now addressed the black-shrouded boy, who was staring down at his piece of paper quite intently.
'Hmm?' He looked up upon hearing his name being called. 'What are you all doing?' He looked around with wide, curious eyes, sending a small smile their way as he observed the different reactions people gave to his words.
'Oh, my god.' Wooyoung finally spoke. 'He doesn't know what's going on!'
A filler. Slay.
