Chapter 19: The Devil In Disguise
The figure of the little girl with the devil who had always embraced her body all night had returned to show her true form. Nothing has changed about her, other than the vile demon that has always been with her now has melted into one with her and Mind, being able to see it clearly through a pair of brown irises that stabbing deep into her soul. She knew she had entered a pit of despair the second she gave her soul to this devil in human body. Because indirectly, Mind seemed to have given her whole soul into the grip of the devil.
Letting her soul dance in the hands of the devil along with other innocent dead souls is the worst decision she has ever made in life. But still, if at that time she had other options, she clearly would not have allowed herself to be in her current position and chose to go as far as possible before it was too late.
And now, she couldn't do anything but nod obediently at every command that the devil gave her.
All the chains that shackle her neck now stem from her bad luck, and that happened a long time ago—more precisely, when Mind was still small. It should be noted, Mind and Freen have known each other for a long time considering they had lived in the same orphanage until Freen was adopted by a kind-hearted husband and wife-which Mind did not know she could consider as a blessing or not because she thought she was not. would meet that little devil again in her lifetime.
But it seems God loves to play with the line of destiny that she has.
Mind remembers Freen as a quiet girl who was beautiful and a genius. She always managed to accomplish something that should be done by adults and it never failed to amaze her. What Freen did seemed to amaze her, because it always made her think—how could a child like her have the mind to do all that so boldly. Her brilliant ideas that made them able to sneak out of the orphanage to roam the city without adult supervision also made little Mind feel that Freen was an extraordinary child.
In the past, Mind did not understand and thought that mutilating a cat into several pieces, cutting off a bird's head and leaving it in front of the door of the head of the orphanage's room, and making traps out of razor sharp blades to injure other children were cool things that only a few people could do. But gradually, she realized that all the actions that the woman did when she was small were indications that she had a special psychological disorder that only most people in the world suffer from, which she now recognizes as a psychopathic disorder.
Day by day, young Mind felt that there was something strange about Freen so she started to keep her distance and tried to stay away from the boy for some time. However, Freen actually made her the target of her mischief. Finding a dead bird in her room is no longer something rare because Mind finds this disgusting creature almost every day since she left Freen. She had already reported this to the head of the orphanage, but everything ended without further action because Freen always had perfect alibis and excuses and that just backfired on Mind.
For months, Mind lived in fear and terror. She was only able to breathe fresh air when Freen was finally adopted by a rich family and she was also adopted a few months later.
They met again when they were in the third grade of high school. At that time, Mind was barely able to continue her studies up to university because her parents could no longer afford the cost of her education. Plus she has two younger siblings who are also still in school, so inevitably she has to give up her opportunities for her two younger siblings while she has to work to help support the family economy.
When she is about to give up and bury her dream of working in the criminal investigation environment that she has yearned for since childhood, Freen Sarocha suddenly appears in her life. She came when evening came, when Mind was preparing to end her shift at the convenience store. She almost didn't recognize her when she called her name. But Mind remembers, at that time Freen came wearing the uniform of the elite private school in that city, with her name neatly embroidered on the left chest of her dark blue vest.
Freen Sarocha.
Since then, their encounters became more intense and Mind realized that the strange girl she once knew had turned into a normal, beautiful and charismatic teenager. She no longer found the psychopathic side of Freen that she had seen before. Even now, Freen had turned out to be very kind and was able to communicate normally with everyone. The strange quiet girl has turned into an extrovert girl who is loved by many people.
Starting from there, their relationship became even closer because Freen was always there for her as the only person who listened to all of her complaints. Up to one point, Mind became close enough to Freen's adoptive family to the extent that they intended to help pay for all of her college education expenses. At first, Mind refused all of that because she didn't want to bother the Freen family. But they kept insisting and asked Mind to take it as a thank you for being Freen's best friend since she was in the orphanage.
Thanks to Freen's adoptive parents, Mind managed to complete her education until she earned a master's degree in psychology. Not only that, they also finance all forms of certification and all licenses needed for Mind to support her career as a criminal profiler. Meanwhile, Freen successfully graduated from the police academy and was immediately assigned to the Chiang Mai Regional Office. Broadly speaking, the Freen family—and Freen herself—play such a large part in her life that she feels the need to repay them.
She showed this form of reciprocity by accompanying Freen to move to Bangkok after the murder cases of the hostage takers and civilians that she had carried out were completed. Even though that meant she also had to move her work area from Chiang Mai to Bangkok and start all over again, but in order to repay Freen and her family, she was willing to do it all.
She also showed this form of gratitude by keeping her eyes and mouth tightly closed when Freen took her to a special room in her private apartment unit to show all the collections she had acquired over the past few years. They were random photos of a man, a photo of a full family member, and a photo of a white woman in full police uniform—on each photo, there was an ARMSTRONG written in red marker.
Not only that, Mind was again shocked by Freen's confession which she made with an innocent face and said that she did not only do the shooting incident on purpose so she could get a transfer letter faster, but also did it for her own pleasure.
Everything Freen does is to get her close to the youngest daughter of Alexander William Armstrong—a former co-worker of Freen's biological father as well as a provocateur and traitor who destroyed her family when she was little. At that time, Mind couldn't move anymore when the terrible figure she had seen when she was little appeared in front of her and told her that she had to obey and follow everything she ordered her to do.
From then on, Mind Sawaros Nekkham, a criminal profiler, is officially involved in the serious crimes that will rock Bangkok for the next few months. Freen had planned everything carefully, and she was just waiting for orders from her. The first order from Freen came when the woman was still not officially on duty in Bangkok and was still going back and forth from Bangkok to Chiang Mai to take care of important documents related to permission to transfer tasks and complete documents to rent several apartment units that she would later use.
From what Freen had explained to her, the task was pretty easy. Mind only needs to go around or use the channel that she has as a criminal profiler to find the nicknames of the young women who make up the ARMSTRONG name. But apparently not only that. In fact, she is still forced to witness firsthand how Freen seduces, kidnaps, and tortures all of her victims until they are finally brutally murdered—and she does all of this by leaving the victims' eyes wide open and their mouths covered with duct tape.
Mind cannot forget all those terrible sights. The cries and groans begging for her help, the desperate touches of those who were waiting to die, the terror-filled looks of the women as Freen prepared to slice their throats with a machete, the thick blood that spurted out like a spring, to the fishy smell of blood that never lost her sense of smell for months.
However, the most horrifying and disgusting sight she had ever seen was when she found out that Freen is also a cannibal. Mind first learned of the fact that when Freen killed her second victim in Bangkok—a woman representing the letter R—the woman cut off a small piece from her hand and put it in her mouth to swallow it whole. Mind was also forced to swallow human flesh like her, but she refused. Fortunately, at that time she was lucky because Freen was not offended and immediately did something else.
So far, Mind has only been silent when she saw Freen doing all those heinous and disgusting things before her eyes. She also tries hard to restrain herself when she sees Freen playing the role of a good cop who has admitted past mistakes and intends to atone for them by doing police work to catch serial killers—in fact, Mind wants to vomit from it.
After months of letting herself in the pool of sin filled with rotten blood that seeped into the pores of her skin, Mind felt that she was getting tired and frustrated to death. She realized that there was something wrong with her morals as a normal human being and she realized that at this point, she should have done something to save herself.
Because right now, Freen had come to the end of the plan she had been devising for years and Mind knew full well that with this, there was little chance of them getting out alive. Because in her plan, Freen intended to block the exit from the abandoned building where the three of them were now and burn the building to the ground after she finished playing with the youngest Armstrong.
Exhaling a breath she had been holding for some time, Mind walked away from the window and decided not to look outside anymore. The cold night wind made the hairs on her neck prickle. What was in here was enough to freak her out so she didn't want to compound her fears with something she might see out there.
After getting close enough to Freen, she says, "Freen, I feel the police have sensed our whereabouts and will come soon." Mind rubbed the back of her neck that didn't itch. She only did it to shake off the feeling of uneasiness from the long-haired woman in front of her and the musty-smelling room they were in now.
Since earlier Mind had just stared out the window and looked far below, at Freen's SUV which was neatly parked right in front of the building. Indeed there was not a single source of light in that place, moreover the many dense trees that were around the building also added to the gloomy impression there. Freen's car was not a dark color like black or gray, so she could see the roof of the car from the top floor of the building.
They are on the 13th floor of an abandoned former hotel building on the outskirts of Bangkok. So that from that height, Mind can see the sparkling downtown of Bangkok which is very far away. With anxiety creeping in her heart, Mind held her breath as she looked in all directions, afraid that at any moment there would be dozens of police cars or special forces that would surround them. Even though she knew Freen had planned everything carefully so she was sure the police wouldn't catch their trail for quite some time.
Or maybe... it's not actually a perfect plan. Because the kidnapping and murder that Freen did to Heng and Saint was something they had never thought of before. They do that because circumstances and situations force them. Because, Freen didn't even expect that Saint and Heng would almost intervene in the plan she had laid out beforehand.
Saint wants to make Becca back into police custody, he also has the potential to reveal Freen's true identity more quickly, while Heng intends to catch Freen and corner the woman to finish unfinished business—yes, that man still holds a grudge against Freen and Becca so she didn't want to risk letting him live hanging around them any longer. She didn't expect Saint and Heng to do that simultaneously and in such an aggressive form. This forces Freen to speed up her plans and it starts with kidnapping Saint and Heng on the night that the press conference that was televised across the country is being held.
But a plan is still a plan, no one can arrange it perfectly and give maximum guarantee of success. Mind will run out if she is caught before the final execution is carried out, and if so, it is certain that she will receive a severe punishment and will die rotting in the hell on earth which they call a prison for big and wicked criminals.
However, in contrast to Mind who looked pale with restless gestures like biting the tips of her fingernails repeatedly, Freen seemed much calmer and relaxed. The woman ignored Mind who was nervous by the glassless window across the room, while she stood in front of a dusty wooden table with an assortment of sharp objects and tools such as fruit knives, butcher knives, screwdrivers, drill, razor blades, large hammers, nail hammer, and a sharp cleaver. Beside the table, there is a generator that is running, five jerry cans of gasoline, and a bottle of liquid nitric acid.
Because the interlocutor ignored her, Mind again said louder, "Freen!"
"What is it? are you scared? Huh, you know they're just a bunch of rotten rats that are easily distracted." Turning her neck slightly to look at Mind out of the corner of her eye, Freen finally answered. She then walked away from the table and stood in front of Becca who was still lying unconscious with her head covered in a black cloth. "After what did the two of us do to get to this point? How could anyone scare you? I don't understand."
You don't understand because you don't have a heart like a normal human, Mind said to herself. The woman sighed, trying to ignore the stares from the two wide-open eyes watching her in front of her. She knew Freen never liked to be disturbed, and her words just now might have annoyed her a bit. But to hell with the fear that she had been harboring, this time she would not allow Freen to reach the end of the disaster.
She might be able to finish this before it's too late.
Mind glanced at Becca briefly, then without taking her eyes off, she said, "I want to ask you again. Is killing that woman could satisfy the grudge you've been feeling all along? If you had killed her... then what? What are you going to do next?" she walked slowly toward Freen who was still standing where she was. Only, she was now completely face to face with her. If it's like this, Mind has to be careful if she wants to attack first.
"Oh, her?" Freen pointed at Becca with her left hand, "Her family are the people I've been looking for since I was a teenager, and she... is the most precious treasure the Armstrong Family has. If you ask whether killing her will get my revenge, the answer is actually no."
What?
"Freen... if you're angry with Mr. Armstrong, why don't you just kill him? Why did you have to kill lots of innocent people and... become like this?" Mind looked frustrated, her face was starting to sweat now. "I'm not sure you're only doing this out of spite with the Armstrong Family."
"You know me so well." Freen snorted. She pushed her hair back and massaged the nape of her neck for a moment before finally answering while throwing a quite disturbing smile. "You're right, that grudge probably won't go away even if I wipe out the entire Armstrong Family. But, I like this. I love watching those humans kneel before me and beg me to let them live. I love how they look at me with those eyes full of fear. I felt like God could decide when I could take their lives and they all worshiped me by kneeling in front of me every time I raised my machete and told me how they would die at my hands."
Freen's hand drifted over the sharp object and several tools that lay on the table, starting from end to end. Mind took a guard position, in case Freen raised one of the weapons and attacked Mind directly. But luckily, Freen didn't because the woman immediately moved in front of the closed door and away from the table.
She stood there and used her body to block the door. "But fear not. I will be finished when my goal is to kill all members of the Armstrong family, and until then, you will remain with me."
"I can't believe it, all this time I've obeyed everything you've ordered me just to make me die with you?" finally Mind jerked hard right in Freen's overly calm face. For a moment, it frightened and trembled her. But the emotional outburst she felt managed to win over her fear so without hesitation she pushed Freen's body away and grabbed a knife from the table. "This really doesn't make any sense. I'd rather go to jail than have to deal with a devil like you until I die!"
Freen raised both hands and showed Mind her palms. She laughed, showing rows of white teeth with dark red splotches that made the woman flinch for a moment—Freen may have eaten something else a while ago.
"Careful with that knife, Mind. You've seen what that thing does to the human body, so you shouldn't brandish it carelessly like that. You can get me killed." Amidst her deafening laughter, the police lieutenant who had gone crazy didn't seem the least bit afraid of the knife that Mind was pointing at her head. "Besides, what's in your head? You think I'll just let you go? Ah, Mind. You're too naive. How could I be willing to release my pet into the wild just like that."
Who would have thought, the courage she had piled up suddenly melted away like a heated block of ice. Mind's hand that was holding the knife couldn't move any further and could only brandish the knife tremblingly, while Freen seemed satisfied watching the woman freeze from her own fear. She already knew this was going to happen, and somehow Mind wouldn't be able to fight her because she herself was aware that Freen was not a suitable opponent for her.
But Mind doesn't stop there. She decided not to give in to fear and immediately swung the knife horizontally from left to right with great force. She had time to move her body forward, causing the knife to successfully scratch the bridge of Freen's nose and leave a small cut there. Mind growled, trying to get her balance after making a full swing that sent her body nearly spinning sideways. As she was preparing to swing the knife again, Freen suddenly stamped her foot and jumped to the side, then Mind felt something very hard hit the side of her head sending her flying.
DUG
Mind's body landed on the cold, rough concrete surface, her shoulders landing first and she could hear a painful crack as her shoulder and collarbones touched the hard surface. She groaned in pain, tried to get up but her body refused. She could only roll over, trying hard to focus her eyes which had darkened for a while. Through her blurry vision, she could see Freen walking towards her while dragging a bloodstained hammer.
The dim light which was the only source of light in that place made Mind able to see the blood splatters sticking to Freen's face—and she was so scary that Mind reflexively screamed in a broken voice.
Seeing the approaching threat, Mind's right hand moved wildly groping around in the hope that she would find the knife that had fallen earlier. But it wasn't the knife that she got, but the impact of the hammer that landed directly on her fingers and shattered her hand in an instant. Mind screamed because the pain was too excruciating. She might still not be able to see clearly because of the blood that got into her eyes, but vaguely, she could see that her right hand was already covered in blood. In fact, she could see something white poking out of the melted blood.
"Too bad, mind. I thought you were my best friend." Freen raised her hammer to chest level. She held it with both hands and no longer let the tip of the hammer rest on the surface of the concrete floor. "But we really shouldn't be able to put our trust in fellow human beings, right? You should too." The woman exhaled, then began to set up the stance and again raised the big hammer high. "I want to let you live, but what can I do. You are no longer useful to me, so I have no other choice but to get rid of you."
Mind grimaced thinly, staring blankly at the moss-filled ceiling of the room. The hammer that was high above her head and ready to crush her brain no longer scared her. Soon she would die soon, and all the burdens of thoughts that made her almost crazy seemed to evaporate with her breath. If she died, then nothing would bother her anymore—and, oh... how she loved the idea.
So Mind grabbed Freen's leg, squeezing it hard even though one hand was crushed and blood was still flowing from the remains of bones and bits of fingers that were almost severed. "W—We weren't friends in the first place. I never considered you as a friend. To me, you're just a demon incarnated in a human body. You think I'm doing this because I see you as a friend? You're dead wrong. In my eyes, you are nothing more than a mistake, a curse, and a disaster that should be destroye." she hissed. "I curse you till the end of my life, Sarocha Chankimha."
"Then look me in the eye and curse me as much as you want. Make sure you remember this face until the day you die," Freen answered calmly. She was not at all surprised or shocked by Mind's words as if she had expected all of this to happen now. Perhaps, that's why Freen immediately blocked the elevator and fire escape to cut off access to the bottom. The Lieutenant then exhaled, looking at Mind with disdain. "So sad. Even when you die, you can't stop me. In fact, I'll never stop, even if I die."
Right after Freen finished her sentence, the hammer that she raised high directly plunged into Mind's head. The iron surface of the huge hammer mercilessly crushed Mind's skull and instantly shattered it like she was splitting a watermelon. There was a cracking sound, followed by splashes of blood spraying in all directions, as well as fragments of skull bones and flesh splattered. The disgusting sound of something wet clinging to the hammer returned as Freen raised the hammer and struck Mind's deformed head again.
Freen repeated it mercilessly until she could no longer see the shape of a human head from Mind. The bones of her skull were made flush with the concrete floor, her eyeballs and brains had been splattered somewhere, and large pools of blood almost completely covered the soles of her shoes. A loud bang accompanied by the disgusting sound of human flesh sticking to a hammer was the only sound source there. But Freen wasn't afraid of someone who might hear her voice, because this was the 13th floor of a building that was very far from the center of the human crowd.
The woman only stopped swinging the hammer when she could no longer see Mind's face under her feet. She took one step closer and stepped on a pool of blood, remains of brain and contents of Mind's head so she could drag the headless body to be left in the corner of the room right beside the studio light connected to the generator. The concrete floor she was standing on was now covered in pools of blood and traces of blood. It would take a long time for that much blood to drain, so she had to be careful not to slip.
But, wouldn't it be more interesting if the place where you stand becomes slippery? She doesn't have to worry too much about slipping because she wears tactical boots designed for muddy terrain, unlike Becca who doesn't wear shoes. This made Freen's chest rumble with a burst of adrenaline. Just imagining how she would experience the game she had been waiting for all her life made her excited.
Just Freen and Becca. Just the two of them, no one else to disturb their very special time together tonight.
She turned around, swung her legs and let her shoes soak in a pool of blood. Stopping one meter in front of Becca, Freen shook her head after seeing the body still not moving even though the black cloth that covered its face seemed to be swelling and deflating because of Becca's irregular breathing.
Looks like she was just pretending to be unconscious all this time.
"Becky, I know you're awake. Sorry for all of these mess, this must scare you. But don't worry, you'll get used to it eventually. Because this one still doesn't compare to what you'll see later." Freen dropped her hammer on the floor, creating a small splash of blood as the heavy object landed in a pool of blood. She then walked over to Becca and crouched in front of her, her hands moving to remove the black cloth covering Becca's face. With one quick movement, Freen let go of the cloth and she was immediately greeted with a horrified look from the short-haired woman.
Since they arrived at this place, Becca had indeed regained consciousness. Even with dark vision due to the black cloth covering her head, she could still use her ears to hear what was going on while she pretended to faint. And all of that was enough to give her reason to look for any way she could get out of that place, or maybe get back her cell phone that was either destroyed or hidden so she could call for help.
However, the problem now was herself. All the muscles in her body seemed frozen and could not be moved at all. Even with her vocal chords, she could only let her lips open without making a sound because she was rendered mute by the terrible sight that unfolded before her eyes.
Freen with her face covered in blood, the hammer that was lying in a pool of blood, bits of human flesh and bones, and the headless body that was near the lamp... damn, that was enough to make Becca scared to death. A flash of memory suddenly flashed through her head. About nightmares and the black figure that beheads her every time she appears in her dreams. All this time she had been wondering whether the black creature was a warning coming from her subconscious.
And after recalling what her father had told her that she and Freen had known each other years before the suicide and murder incidents occurred, Becca became convinced that the figure in her dream was indeed a manifestation of her subconscious knowing that there is a threat coming. Coincidentally, the nightmares and the appearance of the beheading figure have become more intense since she met Freen for the first time at the Bangkok police station.
Freen. Freen is the real threat. The pitch-black figure that had been in her dream was Freen. Turns out she'd been dreaming of her before they even got to know each other.
"Freen... why?" Becca spoke in between breaths. Her gaze could never leave Freen's face even though deep inside her heart, she didn't want to put her eyes on that scary face.
"Why?" Freen smiled crookedly. She wiped the blood stains on her face with the back of her hand. "I don't know either." her hand then touched the side of Becca's face and made her sit against the wall. Mind's blood that was on Freen's hand also stained Becca's face, making the woman widen in horror. It seems Freen purposely dabbed Becca's face with the blood to annoy her—or perhaps as proof of ownership. Slowly, Freen stood up and she stepped on Becca's left shoulder with her foot so she couldn't move much. "Bec, how about we find out together?"
Becca groaned. Freen's hard sole pressed directly on her shoulder blade and it caused her excruciating pain. "I trusted you."
"That's my goal," Freen gave Becca a sweet smile. Usually when she saw that smile, Becca felt her heart warm. But now, she actually felt very scared. That smile was nothing more than the smile that came from a madman who had an obsession with flesh and blood of humans. "All this time you met and talked to another side of me. So you could say this is the time we actually met each other for the first time, nothing to hide anymore." Freen continued. She then lifted her feet from Becca's shoulders and crouched again in front of her. "Rebecca Patricia Armstrong, it's really nice to see you again. My name is Sarocha Chankimha, at this point, can you remember me now?"
"...it turns out you remember when we met many years ago. What turned you into the way you are?" Becca asked in a low voice.
"You," Freen replied. Right after that, her expression suddenly turned sad. "You're the one who made me like this."
