Point of view of Demetri Volturi

We were going up the stairs and I saw that Hailey was observing the details around her, we had arrived on the first floor and I opened the door for Hailey. I took her gently by the waist and I guided her towards the door which I opened.

Alec and Jane both turned as I came up behind them. Aro looked at us and he smiled.

“Welcome to the family my dear Hailey.” Aro said softly.

"Thanks."

I stared at Aro who slid his gaze towards me.

“I think she has a gift.”

Aro stood up.

"Oh yes ? Sounds interesting. Which one?"

“Like Eleazar.”

“That one of detecting the potential gifts of others ? What makes you think that?"

“She knew I was a stalker without me even mentioning it.”

Aro smiled.

“It might come in handy, two hundred years ago I let Eleazar left us to live with a companion. I wouldn't need to contact him again."

Aro turned to Hailey.

“You already know my gift, Alec's and the one that Demetri has. We are going to do a test. Jane? Please come closer.”

At the same time Jane was next to Aro in front of us.

"Jane also has a gift, could you tell me which one?"

I turned to Hailey as she stared at Jane. She seemed to have to concentrate. She seemed intrigued and opened her mouth.

“I see pain. Her gift is the opposite of Alec. She can make people suffer.”

Aro smiled.

“Indeed, you are right. Thank you, Jane."

Jane was going back to her brother.

“Do you see anyone else with a gift in this room?"

I knew he wanted to test if she was going to see Marcus' gift. She stared at Caius who looked up at her. She turned her gaze to Felix and again she seemed to feel nothing except that her gaze was now fixed on Marcus. He stared at her without saying anything. Hailey smiled.

“He has a gift similar to mine. I identify the gifts, so he does with the relationships.”

Aro smiled.

“Alright, Hailey. We are sure that you have the gift of being able to detect gifts in others. Usually this gift is effective on members of our species as well as humans. It could be useful to us.” Aro said.

"The bond that unites you to Demetri is strong."

Hailey was smiling at Marcus who had just spoken to her.

“During your first year, we will train you Hailey. If you have a question, ask it and we'll answer it."

Hailey nodded.

“First of all, hunts must be discreet and vampires must burn or hide the bodies. This doesn't really apply to you because the rule you have to follow is not to hunt in Volterra. Our village has knowledge about vampires due to past events and we managed to hide from them. We find our food far away.”

"OK."

”Another important detail, basically when a vampire bites someone he is responsible for training them and showing them the laws and everything about this new rebirth. To remove any responsibility from Demetri, I proceeded to your transformation but he will assist you a lot in your training since I am very busy but I remain at your disposal if you have the slightest problem.”

"Perfect."

I could feel a tension coming from Hailey, she seemed stressed to be here and didn't want to take up too much space.

“Sometimes we have to exterminate people who commit a crime. One of these crimes is to create immortal children. It's about biting a child, freezing its evolution at the age it has. They are incapable of any control and can destroy entire villages. So their existence is illegal in our world. When Demetri told you the truth about our species, he probably gave you the choice to know the truth and become like us or die. This is another law, so you must not tell any human what you are. This will be for when you can rub shoulders with humans without killing them.”

Hailey nodded.

“We have a few other little laws like children of the moon or about false testimony but that doesn't really apply to you. However, an equally important rule is that you must not go out in the sun in front of humans.”

"I noticed, Demetri remained in the shadows but he didn't want to tell me why."

Aro smiled and stared at me.

“When the sun comes up, take her to the garden. It will be much easier than explaining it to her.”

“Okay Master.”

“I let you all go. Have a nice evening." Aro said.

Hailey quickly started running for the door and Felix helped her brake.

"Don't break everything, you could have walked through that door." He said.

“I just think about moving and I just run. Sorry, I'll work on that."

I opened the door to Hailey and we both walked towards my room.

As I closed my door, she turned to me. She looked shocked.

“It's strange, I heard lots of sounds and when you closed the door, nothing.”

I smiled.

“This is completely normal, we made renovations in the castle many years ago. We managed to find the existence of a material whose composition is so thick that even with our over-developed hearing, we cannot hear through it. This allows everyone some discretion.”

Hayley nodded.

“It makes me feel strange. I no longer feel exhausted. I want to run, move and much more. I feel filled with new energy.”

I started laughing.

“Your old health conditions must have drained a lot of your energy. This will no longer be the case now.”

Hailey smiled at me and laid down on the bed.

“You told me you were about a thousand years old, what have you done with this long life on Earth?”  Hailey asked me.

I smiled.

“I have lived in Egypt and Italy, however I have traveled all over the world.”

"It's so awesome, I hope to live that long." Hailey answered me.

I sat down next to her.

“You will have this chance now.”

She stared at me and approached me, she slipped her head in my neck and I saw her open her arms. She closed them around me and I froze.

“Thank you Demetri, you saved me, without you I wouldn't have the chance to live without epilepsy.”

I let out a groan, turning my head towards Hailey as I heard my skin crack.

“Please release me. Hailey, you're way too strong right now... You're cracking up my skin..."

She looked up and released her hold on me. I started to smile and let a sigh out.

“I am really sorry!”

“It's nothing, you still have human blood in you, during your first months of rebirth you will be much stronger than us. In a few months, you will be able to control your strength.”

She was smiling at me. I put my hand on her cheek. She was staring at me.

“I'm so happy to have found my soul mate and that I can keep you close to me forever..."

I approached slowly and I rested my forehead against hers, I stared at her scarlet eyes which looked into mine.

She smiled and moved towards me quickly to put her lips against mine. I put my hand on her cheek and smiled during the kiss.

“I love you Hailey.”

“Me too Demetri, I will be eternally grateful to you for saving me.”

I slid my hand through Hailey's hair and pressed it against my chest. I gently stroked her hair and smiled as I looked out the window as the sun began to rise.

"I have a surprise for you..." I said.
