Chapter 1

It has been ten long years for Rosana but she has made it formula 2. Along the way, her rivalry with Giuliano has intensified but a friendship has also blossomed between the pair. Who says enemies on track can't be friends off it? Of course, there are people who are suggesting that they are more than friends but both drivers are adamant that there is nothing between them. Rosana is happy that she is one step away from what could be an interesting Formula 1 career. She knows that her chances of getting into F1 are slim but she is still looking forward to her first race weekend in Formula 2. The young driver can feel the tension as she makes her way towards the garage belonging to HWA racelab.

"There you are, Berger. I've been looking for you. you're late," Rosana's thoughts are interrupted. The Austrian checks her watch in a flurry of panic only to find that she is thirty minutes early not late.

"Nope. I'm sure you were way too early now you're bored G," Rosana retorts. She can feel the frustration working its way up. Giuliano waves his hands in the air as if he is giving up. Rosana must have guessed correctly.

"You definitely know me too well," Giuliano sulks off. Rosana assumes it's so that he can get ready for the media stuff. It is the part of the weekend that Rosana despised due to the fact that her last name has connections to F1. The only people that understand how Rosana truly feels about living up to her last name are Giuliano and Mick Schumacher. At least she has allies in the paddock. Since Rosana only needs to get ready for the media stuff right away she is quick. Annoyed but quick. After a thirty-minute wait, it is time for Rosana to face the music. Since she is making her debut the FIA PR team have decided to pair her up with Mick which has eased her nerves a little.

"Hey, Rosana, you are going to be fine. I'm sure I'd be the target," Mick tries to ease Rosana's worries but it doesn't work. Like him, Rosana has a lot of hype surrounding her due to the fact that she is a woman in motorsports on top of having a famous last name.

"Thank you for the help Mick but the only thing that would put my mind at ease is if I win at least one race this weekend," Rosana responds. Little does she know that this weekend would turn out much better than she could have ever dreamed of. She quickly joins Mick in the small press area. A part of Rosana wished that she was doing this kind of stuff with Giuliano but the FIA had other ideas. The reporters soon get to work on getting information from the pair. It doesn't take long for disaster to strike.

"Both you and Mick are a step closer to reaching Formula 1. How do you feel, Rosana, about being a woman in motorsports? and do you think you will make it to Formula 1 to continue your father's legacy?" One of the reporters asks. Rosana winces at what the reporter is insinuating.

"To answer your second question first. Clearly, my goal is to join F1 but I currently have other options available. As for the first question, I don't think my gender matters so long as I get good results," Rosana knows she is going off script but she is tired of giving the same answers. She will have to talk to her dad who is acting as her PR officer about what she should say. Thankfully the press conference is quick. it doesn't take long for the relief to settle in. Rosana is not surprised that Giuliano has waited for her.

"Let me guess they asked the wrong questions," Giuliano gets to work on making the Austrian feel more confident. It seemed to be one skill that Giuliano had. To say the right things at the right time.

"Yup. I finally decided to go off-script and my dad is going to hate me if he finds out," Rosana voices her concern. The last time that happened a mess was left for her dad to clean up. Based on the reactions from the reporters there will not be any major fallout. It doesn't take long for the pair to reach the motorhome where final preparations for both drivers will be made. After getting her race suit on and tied around her waist Rosana is ready for the warmups. The good thing is her trainer has decided to go easy for now. After an hour of various warmups, Rosana has been summoned to the garage where the team principal is waiting for her. He quickly dispenses his advice as Rosana pulls her race suit over her shoulders. There is something about pulling the zip all the way up that gives the young driver comfort.

"Thank you Jay but I'll be fine. Even if I don't win. We have the entire season to make an impact," Rosana responds to what was said before. There is a little hesitation in her voice since the cars are more powerful. Despite that fact, she is quick to get her helmet over her head. Rosana can feel the tension give way into joy as her lead mechanic helps her into the car on the left. At least she has the full support of the team. She soon gets to work on getting the car around the track. After ten minutes her curiosity gets the better of her.

"How are my times looking?" Rosana uses the radio to check on her performance. She knows she will get more from the debrief but she has always been curious when it comes to outperforming her teammates.

"You are currently the fastest in this session," Your lead engineer responds. There is a part of Rosana that knew practice times meant nothing but she is still content with where she is at. After thirty-five minutes of driving the practice had come to an end and Rosana was able to maintain her position as the fastest driver. She is about to head back to the motorhome for some much-needed rest before FP2 but she is stopped by a familiar face.

"Dad, you should have told me you were coming. I would have talked to you before FP1," So much for the rest. Rosana has decided that she is going to take the time to talk to her father.

"No, you needed to get ready without my intervention," Gerhard responds. He still has the same level of both pride and worry as he did during her first competitive kart race. At the same time, he understands that his daughter just needs some time to adjust. After a conversation with her father Rosana heads back to the garage to watch the mechanics work on the car. It is one of a few things that have become a pre-race ritual. That and entering the car from the left. It is the day after the free practice and Rosana is feeling the pressure. It is due to the fact that she was the fastest driver.

"Rose, you don't need to worry," Again Giuliano knows how to boost his teammate's confidence.

"Sorry I can't help it. The press was having a field day with my speed yesterday. Plus you weren't exactly helping," Rosana responds. Her response felt like a slap for Giuliano but he knows his times left something to be desired after Rosana's perfect performance. He can feel the muscles in his face contract to create his trademark frown. You would think that Giuliano would be used to the teasing but, alas, his feelings for his teammate are telling him otherwise. He just needs to find a good time to confess which is going to be impossible given the nature of their job. It doesn't take long for the pair to split ways. Giuliano tries his best to hide the fact that his feelings for Rosana are gnawing away at him. If he does confess to Rosana all hell is going to break loose. After all, both of them have denied being more than friends.

"Is something wrong Gio?" Giuliano is approached by a familiar face.

"Mum, I'm fine. I just have something on my mind," Giuliano tries to avoid the topic even though his mum would be the perfect person to talk to about the kind of issue that he is having. He is soon dragged away to the garage so he can get ready to qualify. Thankfully there is not much that he has to do since he is not a mechanic. Giuliano gets to work on getting the car around the track. After fifteen minutes of trying to set a good lap, Giuliano is struck by the fact that his teammate has adjusted to the car well despite the lack of time. It is definitely going to be a long game with her. Not that the Frenchman minded. In fact, he cherished the rivalry.

"Ok G. You are second with Rosana ahead," His lead engineer informs him via the radio. Meanwhile, Rosana is feeling a sense of shock. She is on pole for her debut race in F2. She knew she had the talent but she lacked any significant experience with the car. Rosana is well aware that she has to maintain her lead to keep herself happy. Even then it won't be a truly wasted weekend.

"See dad you have nothing to worry about," Rosana tries to reassure her father.

"You know I can't help it. I can see that there is a rivalry between you and Giuliano," Gerhard responds.

"You care too much dad. I know how to get the car around the track," Rosana gives up. She is well aware that there is nothing she can do to get her father to stop worrying. It has been a couple of hours since the qualifying and the tension is worse than before.

"Are you ready to leave a legacy like our fathers?" Rosana gets to work on her classic banter.

"Yeah, If you can catch me," Giuliano responds.

"Well I'd worry about you, Alesi since you came second in quali," Rosana retorts. Again Giuliano is hurt but he knows it's just banter. It doesn't take long for the pair to get comfortable in their respective cars. After what feels like an hour the lights finally go out. Rosana is quick to extend her lead before turn one but she is aware that Giuliano will catch up. It doesn't take long for her prediction to come true.

"What's the gap to the driver behind?" Rosana asks.

"The gap is thirty seconds," Her lead engineer responds. She knew the gap was big but she didn't realise she was that far ahead. After thirty minutes of driving Rosana is getting ready to defend against Giuliano who has finally closed the gap. There is a slight tussle but Rosana is barely able to hold her position. Again Giuliano tries his luck only to have the door closed on his face. After another hour of battling the race has come to an end.

"Rosana You have won the feature," Rosana is shocked that her debut race was flawless even with the pressure from Giuliano. It doesn't take long for Rosana to bring the car to the Parc ferme area where she is greeted by her father. After a quick exchange, Rosana heads to the cool-down room. Her head is swirling with emotions. A majority are positive however there is a little bit of doubt since the top six drivers' positions are swapped for the sprint. Not that it matters. After all, Rosana is still going to score big points unless she crashes. At least the podium ceremony is a quick but happy affair for the pair. It is the day after and Rosana is in the middle of the sprint race. Again she is doing well. The only issue is the car is struggling with a suspension problem.

"I don't think I can make it," The panic is setting in. Rosana is dreading the imminent retirement.

"You can. It will be a rough ride," Her lead engineer tries to calm her down. Thankfully Rosana musters her strength to finish the sprint. She is a little disappointed since she was so close to the second podium of the week but the car had other things to say. It doesn't take long for her to bring the car back to the garage. Thankfully Gerhard and her trainer are there to help her relax.

"I owe you an apology," Gerhard remarks.

"No, you don't dad. It's a dangerous world," Rosana responds. She is blissfully unaware that her statement may trigger something in the future. Right now there is only one thing on her mind. That is to relax before the media frenzy. It feels good for Rosana to have her first win under her belt but she is aware that she has a long way to climb since she is a woman in motorsports. At least she will have her rivalry with Giuliano to keep her motivated through whatever hard times may hit.
