Chapter 11
Sugawara looked up from his bed, confused. He didn't know why he was hurting right now and it was confusing. He'd managed not to throw up tonight and now he was confused. Not a great mix.
His chest tightened and he started to cry quietly. This didn't feel good. He wanted to be empty but he wanted to sleep too. And he hadn't emptied his bags out yet to so much as change yet. So no sweater.
He stood, realizing he had the next best thing. He opened Daichi's door, sniffling. "Dai…"
"Mm? What's wrong?" Daichi questioned, half asleep.
Sugawara gulped. "I-I can't sleep."
"Mm... Okay." Daichi lifted the blankets. Sugawara climbed under the blankets and pressed his back against Daichi's chest. Daichi put the blankets back down and held him closer. "Your voice is a bit different…"
"S-sorry."
"No, you sound like you're in pain. Where does it hurt?"
"My stomach." He whispered.
"Mkay." Daichi put his forehead on Sugawara's back and eased his hand onto Sugawara's waist. He rubbed gently, still half asleep. This was so strange for Sugawara but he felt better soon enough and closed his eyes.
"Thank you."
"No problem... G'night…"
Sugawara smiled. "Good night Dai."
"Mm." Sugawara laughed quietly. "I'll get you a heating pad in the morning for your stomach."
"Thank you."
"Of course Suga…"
Sugawara fell asleep a moment later, relaxed and warm. Warm. What a laughable thought.
Sugawara couldn't get completely warm anymore. He was always cold. He'd even started layering clothes when he fell asleep. But everything was cold and lonely and really, really painful.
Things get worse before they got better.
He'd be fine if he could just hang on.
Sugawara turned over in his sleep and held onto Daichi's arm, smiling. This was warm enough for him. This was okay.

Daichi turned around and smiled. Sugawara was resting behind him, holding onto Daichi's back. He seemed so calm.
Daichi turned around and lifted Sugawara's arm, slipping his under it. "Suga." Daichi whispered, seeing the smaller male's face twist into discomfort. Daichi let some weight off of him and smiled. "There we go."
A gentle knock on the door sounded.
"Come in."
Asahi and Daichi's mother both peeked into the room. Asahi blushed, not sure if he was welcome. Daichi's mother urged him forward and hurried to the bed. "Psst."
"Yes?"
"Pancakes and eggs or waffles and eggs?"
"Uh… are you asking for me or Suga?"
"I don't caaaare Daichi. Which one?"
"Hang on." Daichi shook Sugawara's shoulder. "Suga?"
"Hmmm?"
"Waffle or pancake."
"Pancake." Sugawara mumbled. He closed his eyes again and sighed. "Shh."
"You heard him." Daichi said, smiling.
His mother laughed quietly. "I'll close the curtains all the way in a moment. He's a sweet boy." She kissed both of their heads and stood. She turned to Asahi and grinned. "You ready?"
"Yes ma'am."
"Asahi, stop calling my mom ma'am. Just call her Shinju or mom like she asks. It's okay not to be super polite. Especially if she's practically your aunt."
"Right. Sorry." Asahi laughed. "Shinju. Got it."
Daichi's mother laughed. "You gonna help cook with Neil?"
"Mhm!"
"Alright." She made sure the curtains were completely closed. She walked out with Asahi, whispering. Daichi rolled his eyes and looked down at Sugawara, who was fast asleep.
Daichi sat up slowly, making sure Sugawara was okay, and walked into the bathroom. He did his business and walked downstairs. "Hey guys!"
"Daichi, you're supposed to be cuddling with your boyfriend." His mother groaned.
"I'm just getting water."
"What about Suga?" Asahi asked, holding a bowl.
"He's asleep. It's fine."
"Mm."
Daichi grabbed a glass and filled it with water. "Besides, it's so he can take his pill."
Daichi walked back upstairs and set the water down on the nightstand before climbing back under the blankets. He rubbed Sugawara's hair gently, watching with a content smile. Pure admiration and affection.
A few minutes later his mother walked into the room, carrying a plate. Asahi held the other, smiling. Daichi smiled back and eased a hand onto Sugawara's cheek. "Suga. Suga wake up."
"Mnm." Sugawara shook his head and pushed Daichi's hand away.
"Suga? You okay?"
"Shhhh." Sugawara got closer to Daichi and sighed.
"See? It's a little hard to wake him up."
"Right. I could turn on that thing on my phone."
"No, don't do that." Daichi said quickly. He shook Sugawara's shoulder. "Suga. Wake up."
"Noooo." Sugawara whined. He bent away from Daichi, groaning.
Daichi's face dropped and he sighed. "Alright." He pulled Sugawara back to himself and grabbed his sides. Sugawara startled awake and giggled. Daichi chuckled and sat up. "He's awake."
"Mm... Morning."
"Morning Suga." Asahi handed him the plate and Daichi's mother handed him the other.
"Thank you." Sugawara sat up and leaned against Daichi. "Asahi, can you please get my medicine?"
"Yeah. Where is it?"
"Side pocket of my bookbag."
"Okay."
"Thank you!" Sugawara started to eat slowly, genuinely happy. Daichi smiled and ate as well, keeping an eye on Sugawara. He started to memorize the way Sugawara felt against him, just in case. They were still young and this could end suddenly. They didn't know what love was yet.
But it was nice in the moment.

Sugawara looked up from the toilet, his head swimming. In hurt so much just to sit like this. In the middle of the night.
Sugawara put his head down and sighed. "Deep breaths. Deep breaths… Deep…" He closed his eyes, loosing consciousness. It wasn't the first time it had ever happened. It didn't scare him too bad anymore.
Several minutes later he opened his eyes, startle by the knocking on the bathroom door. He flushed the toilet and stood, washing his face and swishing water in his mouth. He spit it out and opened the door.
Daichi waved tiredly at him. Sugawara smiled in relief. "Hey."
"You having trouble sleeping?"
"No. I'm good." Sugawara leaned up and kissed Daichi gently. "Thank you."
"No problem." Daichi walked into the bathroom.
Sugawara walked back into his room and laid down. The heating pad Daichi had promised the day or two before was under him, warming his twisting stomach. It felt good mixed with the two comforters on top of him. Warm and cozy.
This was so much better.
"Suga?"
"Hm?"
"You sure you're okay?"
"Mhm."
"Mkay. Sleep well."
"Dai it's the middle of the night…"
"Mhm. Sorry."
"Do you feel okay?"
"I'm okay. Just checking on you." Daichi closed the door.
Sugawara laughed quietly. He closed his eyes and dozed off. He knew he had to deal with Daichi being concerned but it was fine. Best friends, boyfriends, and teammates were all very caring. But imagine having all of them in one. Kind and gentle. Things Sugawara loved about Daichi so much.
If only he could tell him about the real issue.
